KVM Distortion

I'm having problems with my KVM switch on my machine. I am getting distortion, all images are shifted over to the right, say 1/4" with a transparent hue.
Here is my setup:
Computer 1:
AMD 1.3mghz
Asus board
Asus Geforce3 ti200
Windows 200 Server
Computer 2:
AMD XP 3200
MSI K7N2-Delta nFoce2
MSI GeforceFX 5900
Windows XP SP1
Computer 1 runs fine with no distortion. Computer two does not. I called Linksys (KVM maker) and trouble shot it with them. The KVM came up with no problems. Both ports are good when hooked up to comp1. Comp2 is distorted in ports 1 and 2, and with comp1's cables.
The VGA cables are both brand new Belkin High res cables. I called Belkin to see if the problem could be with the cable. We ran through some things and determined that it was not the cables.
I also thought it might be the opperating system, but the distortion happends in BIOS, which is before any drivers from the OS are loaded, so I am lead to believe it is the Video Card.
I have also tried hooking the male/femal VGA cable directly from the monitor to computer 2. The distortion still existed.
Any ideas? This is my last hope  : :(

I suspect the switch may be part of the problem, especially if you are using a USB based switch OR a ps2 based switch with a USB mouse or keyboard with an adapter to convert the USB device to PS2.
In some cases, the conversion and/or the interface in the switch/converter can cause havoc during the hardware recognition at post. Perhaps even after post during verification of DMI pool data.
Secondly, RAM configuration can also be an issue.
I would first look at the configuration of the KVM switch configurations as I mentioned above and if you are using a converter, remove it from the equation and use a proper peripheral connection. Additionally, If you set the problem PC to a standalone without the KVM switch involved, does it still happen? If not then it is not your Video card but the hardware or configuration relating to the switch.
You could also try using a single stick of RAM or swap from the other machine, but, using only one stick of RAM.

  • [GeForce 6] Video distortion using KVM switches

When connected through a KVM switch the video quality from my main computer using a 128mb GF6800 from MSI becomes distorted, blurry, and the text very hard to read.  However, my second computer using a GF4 4200ti looks fine.
I thought it was a defective switch but I've tried 2 kvm switches from different manufacturers with different cables both with the same result.
Both computers are at 1280x1040 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate... changing the refresh rate nor the resultion helped.
However, when my main computer is connected directly to the monitor the video quality is fine... which makes me completely lost.  Is there anything I can do besides beating everything with a baseball bat??

was hoping there'd be a way to clear things up after getting use to using 2 computers at once
unfortunately can't fit an oldstyle monitor on the desk where i just moved to and can't afford another lcd :/

  • USB Audio Distortion After 10.4.6 Update

Have been using an Edirol UA-1D USB/Digital Audio interface with my Pismo for years. Optical connection for audio out to digital 8 track unit. Crystal clear signal. Painless operation. And NO drivers needed.
Updated from 10.4.5 to .6, and instantly I'm hearing a considerable and disturbing amount of distortion in the audio. It's not volume dependent or overmodulation (comes through even at low input levels). And it comes through iTunes, Reason, LIVE, etc... where it didn't before.
Since the Edirol unit uses built-in Core Audio, I'm baffled. I know Apple has been endlessly tweaking its OSX USB/Digital audio underpinnings, but I fear this latest tweak has knocked something out of alignment.
    Any suggestions?
I zapped PRAM, "repaired" permissions, etc. No luck yet.
    Would appreciate any insight.
    Thanks in advance.

I have been having similar problems with my (much less fancy) USB speakers, intermittently, since the 10.4.6 update (PowerBook). From another post I made elsewhere:
I have Altec-Lansing XT1 USB speakers. They're connected to the PowerBook via a USB KVM, to an ADC, to the speakers.
For the last week or so (it started soon after 10.4.6 upgrade), an odd temporary sound distortion has been occurring. As the original poster mentioned, it sounds for the life of me as if the speakers are blown.
For anywhere from a few moments (several seconds) or longer, the sound output will become distorted in this way. Then, often of its own accord, things will go back to normal. If I want to get them back to normal more quickly, I can mute and unmute (I use a Logitech keyboard with a mute button, or sometimes I hit the Griffin Powermate which defaults to mute, and occasionally I even hit the sound control on the menu bar). When it's unmuted, it comes back undistorted.
Hence, this phenomenon seems to me to likely be software-related.
I almost always use the PowerBook closed and hooked up to an ACD. Lest you think this is particular to this set up: I have another identical ACD & speakers at the office (indeed, even the same keyboard), with the main difference being the lack of the USB KVM switch being left out. The problem happens there as well.
    I welcome any thoughts.

  • Mac mini with KVM switch

I'm thinking of getting a Mac mini, but I need my Windows PC for some apps that aren't available on Mac and some other stuff. I can't afford to get a large monitor for a Mini if I get one, but my current PC has a big flat panel display.I noticed the KVM cable way of moving your stuff (a cale taht lets peripherals like monitors, keyboard and mice be connected to two computers so you don't need a separate one for eache computer), and was wondering if that's a possible way of using both without buying monitors, etc. for the Mini.
Is anyone doing this, and if so, what do you think of using the Mini this way? Does it work well, and what are the pros and cons of doing this?
    Thanks,
    Ilya Smirnov

My experience with my Belkin KVM is also good, with the exception of one thing. I can't switch back to the Mini once I've switched to the PC. I have to unplug the PS2/USB adapter from the Mini and THEN do Scroll Lock-Scroll Lock 2. The KVM then switches, and I can plug back in. Everything works fine after that. It gets cumbersome though if you want to switch seamlessly between the two.
I only use the KVM for the KM part these days since my monitor (Samsung 930b 19" LCD) is able to switch between DVI and VGA by itself. And since I'm using the Windows box mostly for gaming these days, I use the DVI with the PC and the VGA with the Mac. The KVM was able to handle it without any distortion when I ran VGA on both of them. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a cost-effective DVI KVM switch out there yet. I could be wrong.

  • BSOD KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on 10041 in KVM with OVMF

First, the crash dumps: http://1drv.ms/1GJxoRC (sorry about the non-English (Swedish) in there)
In my admittedly experimental setup that has so far been working unexpectedly well and stably, I started getting BSODs on launching a number of applications once I had updated to 10041. It is 100% reproducible and says KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED*.
Every time I start Spotify (latest version), the crash happens instantly. In fact, I even get the blue screen when I try to uninstall it or download and run the installer (simple way of reproducing). This is by no means isolated to Spotify. Dark Souls II always
crashes the same way about one second into the first screen, often with visual distortion, making the BSOD unreadable. I reinstalled Windows Preview to another partition, and experience exactly the same behavior. On build 9926 everything is perfectly fine,
but once I upgraded that to 10041, the problems were back. I then reverted the update, and it's all good. But I can go back and test things, as one of the partitions i still on 10041.
Anyway, unless those crash dumps have all the info one could need, some context on my setup might be useful. I run the preview in a VM, using KVM on Linux, with OVMF (essentially turns the VM into a UEFI machine). I've been using GPU pass-through,
passing my Radeon HD 6970 over to windows, plus a few USB devices. I thought that might have been the problem, but I've tried running the VM without passing it through, and the same thing happens anyway. Maybe that's not enough to rule it out...
The VM uses a physical SSD rather than a disk image, so I can actually boot straight into it when I boot up the computer! When I do that, I don't experience the blue screens.
    * There's been one occurrence of SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, when starting Dark Souls II, but I don't have the dump from that.

Alright, never mind. 10049 fixed it! So thanks for the impossibly quick support, hehe!

  • USB audio distortion

I'm having a problem with running a soundcard through my USB port. Seemingly randomly the audio signal is becoming disorted when coming out of one port. Changing the port does fix the problem, but now i have 2 USB ports that are unusable for connecting to my USB sound card device, and i fear that eventually all of them will go wrong
any ideas what this might be or how it can be fixed?

  • Thunderbolt display output distorted

    Working on MBP 2.4 Ghz, i5, 8GB
    OSX 10.9.4
When connecting via DisplayPort-cable to my Thunderbolt port towards a external TV (Philips 40") I see a nice mirrored image(see image 2).
However, after some time (random) I receive a distorted image on my mirrored TV (see image 1).
After disconnecting the cable and connecting it again, it restores the mirrored image back to the correct version. After a certain time (random) it swapped back to the distorted image..
Any suggestions?, tried reset of PRAM, ... nothing seemed to work.
    Many thanks !

    Hello there, Florinello17.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great, in-depth steps for troubleshooting your issue:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

  • Soundsticks (USB Audio) Distortion w/High SPLs...

I have a pair of Harmon Kardon Soundsticks (I've had them for a long time, maybe 10 years) anyway, they have been working flawlessly on my 2006 vintage Mac Pro yet lately the audio distorts when playing it rather loud and with some demanding material...
So, does it sound like there is an issue with the MP or the Soundsticks?

  • Mini DVI to S-video and composite giving complete distorted output!!

I tried to hook up my 20" Sony Trinitron either through S-video or composite to the powerbook without any success. I got completely distorted picutre. I have tried all the video resolution setting that is available on the Displays reference window with the same result. Does anybody out there run into this problem at all.

I have a 12" PowerBook 1.5ghz and had the same problem with garbled video today. When I plugged in the Mini-DVI > Composite/S-Video adapter the PowerBook would consistently think it was attached to an ordinary VGA monitor, and could not sync with the television. This caused a B&W, warped, split in half picture.
I took the adapter back to the Apple store, plugged it into one of their demo units, and saw it behaved the same way. They gave me a replacement and everything has been fine since.

  • Is KVM VGA Passthrough Possible on Macbook Pro Mid 2014?

I've been using Arch on and off for a couple years on different hardware, and this time I'm trying to get it to work semi-flawlessly on my mid 2014 Macbook Pro. My Linux skills are meager, so I need some help understanding if VGA passthrough is possible on this machine, and if it is, how to set it up. I have hope that it might work after reading this blog and the Arch forums. An outline of my current setup follows. I will also document progress and research for anyone who might want to try this in the future.
Here are the specifications for this machine:
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB, Nvidia GT 750M 2 GB
I have successfully dual-booted Mac OS X Yosemite and Arch with EFI on a btrfs partition using this blog and the wiki as starting points. Somlo's research also helped. All the basic functionality works (networking, WiFi, etc.), and I am able to boot the physical Arch partition as a Virtualbox VM with the help of the wiki. However, I'm having trouble with getting the integrated Intel graphics to work. The following command:
    lspci | grep VGA
prints the Nvidia card specifications, and nothing about the Intel graphics.
Reading this blog, it looks like someone had to apply a "grub gmux" patch to grub to disable the Nvidia card at boot. I feel uncomfortable installing anything other than the official Arch packages, so I have to know if installing a patched grub is still necessary, and if installing it would still allow me to use VGA passthrough in KVM.
My ambitious to-do list looks like this:
    1. Dual-boot Mac OS X and Arch with btrfs. -done
    2. Setup the physical Arch partition to boot in Virtualbox. -done
    3. Get Intel graphics to work on Arch ideally with OpenGL support. -done
    4. Get Enlightenment working as the desktop environment on Arch. -done
    5. Get Qemu+KVM to boot off the physical Mac OS X partition. -tbd
    6. Enable VGA passthrough for Mac OS X from Qemu+KVM. -tbd
    7. Install Windows as a VM in Qemu+KVM. -tbd
    8. Enable VGA passthrough for Windows from Qemu+KVM. -tbd
    9. Work and do research on Mac OS X from Arch, play hardcore 3D games on WIndows from Arch, play around with Arch, and live happily ever after. -tbd
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance for any hints/input.
    Edit:
The Ubuntu forums has something about getting the two graphics cards to be recognised by using `refind` instead of `grub`. I was able to set up `refind` to boot using the `efi-stub`, but:

Also, I was able to fire up Enlightenment using the Intel graphics card and `0xbb`'s `gpu-switch` script. After using some post-installation tips from this, the computer started getting hot. I followed this thread to get it back to normal.
    Edit:
So I finally got some time to experiment on this. I ended up installing Gnome 3 after trying out Enlightenment, KDE Plasma 5, and Cinnamon. I thought Gnome 3 and Cinnamon had the best Hi-DPI support of those four. Cinnamon's look was too much trouble for me to configure, so I ended up choosing Gnome 3.
To achieve the graphics card passthrough, I tried setting up and starting a VM in `virt-manager`, but starting the VM would cause Arch to freeze. Finally, I tried following the instructions on the wiki, this thread, and the Arch forums. I haven't yet tried booting the Windows installer, but the following are the steps I took so far:
    1. Uninstall all `nvidia` drivers from my system.
    2. Blacklist the `nouveau` driver.
    3. Add `pci-stub` to the modules array in `mkinitcpio.conf`.
    4. Recreate the `initramfs`.
    5. Add `intel_iommu=on pci-stub.ids=10de:0fe9,10de:0e1b,8086:156c` to the `refind.conf` `options` line.
    - These three IDs are ones for the Nvidia graphics, Nvidia sound, and the "Intel Corporation Device" (probably the HDMI port, or something related to the
ethernet card), which belong to the same "IOMMU group". What was curious was that a Gigabit ethernet controller would appear in the IOMMU group iff I had
an ethernet cable connected to my thunderbolt port. I don't know if I have to add the ID for this, but so far there are no complaints about it in `dmesg`.
    6. Install `ovmf-svn` from the AUR.
    6. Follow the "Binding a device to vfio-pci" section documented at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768.
    7. Follow the "Testing if its working out" section documented at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768.
So far, the test at step 7 is failing -- I get a `vfio-pci 0000:01:00.0: Invalid ROM contents` complaint in `dmesg`, and I see a prompt in the `qemu` window. I'm supposed to be getting a black `qemu` window, and a prompt on an external monitor which I haven't connected yet. I read the comments on this blog about graphics card ROM and EFI compatibility, and it looks like my graphics card ROM can't be read. I also read that the graphics card ROM would only be read once by qemu/KVM and saved as a file for later use, so all I need to do to get around that is pass a snapshot of the ROM of the Nvidia GT 750M card to qemu/KVM. Apparently, "You can download the 750m rom files directly from Lenovo's website on the support page" according to this thread, but all I see is this. I will continue hunting around for a ROM file for this graphics card.

It`s not beacuse of the case. I have the same problem with a macbook pro retina 15 late 2013 (I7 - 2.3 Ghz, 16 GB, 512 SSD, GT750M) with windows 8.1 on bootcamp. The temperature is higher than yosemite. It gets easily at 80 celsius in a demanding game, while on yosemite it barely reaches 55-60 under heavy load. It`s beacuse of windows, and these are the temperatures, I got the same average 55-60 in windows and 45 celsius in yosemite. I read on the forums and I tried evend with a cooler pad. But it doesn`t seem to be any improvement with lowering the temperature in windows.

  • Distortion on display

I'm experiencing a problem with my iMac in the form of a small streak across the bottom of the display, almost end-to-end, and about as high up as the top of the Dock reaches. This streak is rather faint; normally I can't see it unless the background or image is a lighter colour or all one colour. I am aware that there was some sort of display issue with the Revision A iMac G5, but I read the FAQ on that issue and it indicated that my model is not affected by that specific problem. I also know that CRT monitors will show similar distortions when placed in close contact with another magnetic field, but since this is an LCD monitor I have no idea what's caused this or how to fix it. Suggestions?

I first re-installed all drivers and updates, including BIOS updates. After that didn't fix the problem, I did a full wipe/re-install of windows 8, and again, updated all drivers from the HP website. This issue happens on both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I then did an exchange, and even the new exchange ultrabook is experiencing this issue. HP technicians, there is something faulty with this device. Please acknowledge and address ASAP.

However, now qemu-kvm has been removed. If I replace "qemu-kvm" with "qemu-system-x86_64" and try to run it with an extra argument  "-machine accel=kvm" or "-enable-kvm", what I get is

I have added my user to the group kvm as well, as instructed by pacman. Any help would be much appreciated!

Interestingly, mine worked without being in the new group. However, I think that's because I hadn't logged out since the update, so the session didn't know that I had been removed from the group. Though I could be missing something.

  • Photoshop CC distorted image when zoomed out. Text, edges and Straight lines.

I get this distorted image when working on a file. When I zoom in its fine. But as soon as I zoom out all the lines, text , and edges start to become distorted. I've checked that all my drivers are up to date. I've re installed photoshop and still the same thing. Any Suggestions. ( files look fine when saved or exported, this just happens while Im working )

That looks like a Moiré pattern.  Did you scan the image?
If not, can you tell us what operating system?
And is your video card driver fully up to date from the maker's website?

  • Monitor is distorted, but ok in safe mode

IMac 2007 has distorted screen, but it runs fine in safe mode. This happened just after a storm came thru our area, but no loss of power, and other machine on same line has no problems. Screen is broken up in jagged "puzzle pieces".

That may be a faulty graphics chip, since graphics acceleration is disabled in Safe mode. Can you boot from a backup before this problem started ? and/or run the hardware test on original install dvd ?
does it look anything like this, and persist even when started from the install dvd, by having it in the drive & holding  C after the chime ?
