KVM for mixed DVI D-sub setup

I can't find one of the KVM discussions I recall, but I don't think it addressed this.
I would love to share a keyboard, mouse, and one or more monitors with my 3 PCs. But the laptop and one PC are old (meaning D-sub video outputs), and the other is an i7 with DVI. Two of the 3 monitors are DVI capable.
The i7 is the main editing workstation, with only CS5. The laptop is used for email and various other things. The other PC is a P4 that I used mostly most testing (has CS3 and CS4 loaded).
So I want a 3 port, DVI and D-sub switch (with keyboard and mouse), and sure - audio. (But the audio output options on the i7 suggest that would be complicated.)
Or is that what I want? Suggestions?
NewEgg has a sale on a "4 port USB DVI KVMP Switch with Audio and Cables." I suppose I could put a cheap DVI capable video card in the P4, and connect a monitor directly to the laptop?

Not sure if this is much help but I have just been through a lot of searches for a good KVM setup for my two core I7’s..
Fortunately both are DVI-D setups but you can follow some of these links and or call the folks at StarTech and they will tell you what would work best in your situation..
I really like their products and have been using them for years with a PS2 setup..
This is the KVM setup I am going with / not cheep / solid steel stuff which won’t slip all over your desk like the cheep plastic crapolla.. Plus you want to make sure you get one which will give you the full max display capabilities of your setup.
You can drive a truck over these things. (almost). http://ca.startech.com/product/SV231DD2DUA-2-Port-Dual-DVI-USB-KVM-Switch-with-Audio-20-Hu b
My towers are going to be about 25 feet away from the monitors and keyboard so will need some USB and DVI-D range boosters / they also have those products.

• KVM for mini-dv?

Hi.
I've got a MacBook Pro with a mini-DVI video port and one of the new LED Cinema Displays that go so beautifully with it, also using mini-DVI. I'm getting one of the just-released Mac Minis, which also has a mini-DVI video out.
I'd like to set up a KVM switch so that I can use the Cinema Display with both MacBook and Mini, but I haven't been able to find any KVM switches for mini-DVI. The idea of introducing two additional adpaters (mini-DVI to DVI and vice-versa) is unpleasant, both from cost and mess (and possible quality) standpoints.
Does anyone know of a mini-DVI KVM solution?
Thanks,
:ian

Are you sure you don't instead mean Mini-DisplayPort? The new 24" LCD Cinema Display uses Mini-DisplayPort, not DVI.
I don't know of any KVM that switches even the full-size DisplayPort at all as of yet, and I strongly doubt that there will be any in the near future that support Mini-DisplayPort since only Apple is using that as of today.

• KVMs for ACD 23"

I have been searching for USB, DVI KVMs for use with my 23" ACD. Thus far I have found only one that supports 1920 x 1200 resolution:
<http://www.avocent.com/web/en.nsf/Content/SwitchViewDVI-4port>
Actually this is available from Avocent in two or four port models.
1.)I am looking for someone who has used one with a 23" ACD to support their MAC (Tiger) and a PC, and to determine happiness with the AVOCENT KVM.
2.) Are there other USB DVI KVMs that support 1920 x 1200 resolution?

I second the Addlogix. I use the version that switches USB and Firewire with the 23" and it works great with one caution. The KVM box has four USB ports, two general and one "dedicated" to the keyboard and one "dedicated" to the mouse. The two dedicated ports are USB 1.1 and the two hub ports are USB 2.0. I do not understand why they do not make everything 2.0.
So here is my issue and work around. I used a hard wired Logitech "media" keyboard and a wireless MX1000 Logitech mouse. Both devices require USB 2.0 for the Mac and the PC to give them full functionality. Indeed, if you use either on the Powermac G5 in a USB 1 hub, it is not a recognized device. To get around this and still have freely switchable 2.0 ports, I had to connect a powered USB 2.0 hub to the USB 2.0 output of the KVM.
The only other oddity is that my USB Harmon Kardon Powerstick speakers crackle if I connect them to any USB port but the Monitor.
Other than these minor issues, this switch is a joy.

• Question about my msi r6770 with 3 port the (HDMI,DVI,D-Sub)?

i bought my videocard msi r6770 with only the D-sub connector in the package in the box..
my vcard has 3 ports the HDMI, DVI, D-Sub
what is the diference betwen the 3?
so can i use the other cable the DVI and HDMI?
what is the diference if i use D-sub and Dvi, or HDMI advantage and disadvantage?
my monitor is SA300 with port DVI and D-Sub..

I actually just answered my own question right before I saw your reply. But thank you for confirming what I thought. That makes a lot of sense. I already have my existing DVD player set up with the component video cable and you are correct about needing an audio cable. I learned that through a process of elimination when I was setting that up and I have plenty of extra audio cables in my closet, so we're definitely on the same wavelength. My existing DVD player doesn't have the HDMI capability but the component video cable is fine. Now I just have a better understanding of how this works. I believe that my existing DVD player is analog but it's very good and I will glady keep it until it goes.
I was also just fooling with my TV settings. On my "source" list, I had had TV selected as source but I switched it to HDMI, which is what I already connected to my HDTV --- what a difference in sound and picture quality.

• Trying to Find the right KVM For my 3 Sunfire v250's

Hello All,
I currently have 3 SunFire v250 systems running Solaris 9/04. I tried using a Belkin PRO2 series KVM with USB ports. When rebooting the systems, I would get USB Timeout Errors, and some if not most of the time the system would not come up. I would need to go into the ALOM to reset each system usually several times before they would actually come up. The documentation for the KVM suggests booting the System up with the KB/Mouse/Monitor directly connected, and once the system is up then adding the KVM in the mix. This works, however when I reboot the system I am back to square one.
I am looking for suggestions for a KVM switch (if there is one) that will work well with SunFire v250's. Also, I am using xvr-100 graphics cards in each system.
Thank you in advance,
-Chris

Hello Chris,
in the past there have been numerous posts on this topic (search for KVM).
Unfortunately there is no easy answer, except that most people would recommend to use a terminal server/console server instead.
Is your KVM listed on the following site or does Belkin recommend this KVM for Sun SPARC systems ?

• Windows 8 installation error: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files."

I recently tried testing Server 2012 for installation and I had a major issue. Windows 8 also uses the same method for installation so this should also apply to Windows 8. I thought this might be helpful for other people who have the same
problem. My setup is a 1U server with no DVD drive, no hard drives, and only USB. I have a new hard drive that I wanted to install Server onto, so I put it in and ran the installer off a thumb drive. I kept receiving the following error when
I tried to format the hard drive and proceed with the installation:
"We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files."
After hours of troubleshooting, I determined my problem was I was using a thumb drive to install it, and Windows didn't like it. Some people had similar issues when similar devices were plugged in (i.e. external hard drives, SD cards, CF cards, etc).
In my case, it was the installation drive itself was a thumb drive. I ended up digging up an external DVD drive and placed the installation onto a DVD. Worked flawlessly. Now I am up and running.
I tried
the steps here to no avail.
Hope this helps anyone else with the same problems.
