L&M Optical Disc West?

Salutations all -
Getting ready to replicate a DVD (DVD5) and am leaning toward L&M Optical Disc West. They average about 70 cents less per DVD than anyone else we've found. We need glass master / library case plus we'll get the sleeves printed at Digital Spectrum. Both are in Valencia, CA. They were recommended to my business partner - but I can't ascertain anything else as their website is a single pager...
Can anyone shed some light on this - why they're so much cheaper - or has anyone used L&M Optical Disc West and Digital Spectrum? With so many knowlegable DVD pros eyeballing this page, thought I'd ask.
Thanks
paul

There is nothing technically wrong with L&M. Just about everyone in the LA area uses them at one point or another. They are almost entirely adult media. They are without a doubt the cheapest you'll ever find.
What L&M lacks is support to the customer. They are very cheap, but in return for being so cheap, you get okay service much of the time, and very bad service some of the time.
You'll run into situations where the date you're given is missed. And then missed again. When you call and ask why, you'll play the phone shuffle game for a good while. When you finally reach someone with an answer, you'll find the answer is not an answer at all. It's more like, yeah we missed your date. Sort of an acknowledgment, coupled with the attitude of, "oh well, it will get done when it gets done."
I've known companies that can deal with that for a good long time. But after a while, here is what almost always happens. You start to organize your business well, and set street dates. You start to organize your replication schedule around those street dates. You begin to depend on the dates you're given, and thus plan a schedule with the DVD authors and the replicators. The replicators blow your dates, and you have no solid answers because L&M isn't personal enough to care too much about your schedule. If you get upset with them, there are plenty more waiting in line to take advantage of the rock-bottom prices.
Technically speaking, there is nothing wrong with L&Ms manufacturing. Anyone in here who dismisses them as "you get what you pay for" isn't dealing with the reality of replication. It's not rocket science. They do a fine job. Their sole problem is, they are always over booked, and they like it like that. It keeps the price cheap, but it's not a good idea if you plan on depending on a schedule.
So many post houses simply give themselves too little time. They find bug after bug after bug at the DLT stages, which should have been discovered at the DVD-R stages. Don't allow yourself to get so close to the deadline date, that you become dependent on L&M to get you out of a jam, cause they might once in a while, but often they will not, and won't give you the answers or support you need.
The discs are fine. It's their ability to care about you as a customer that is a problem.
If that's fit your business model, and it does a lot of folks, then go for it. They are very cheap, the discs are good. You just get bad service.

  • Optical Disc will not eject

I recently installed Leopard on my Macbook and forgot to eject the optical disc.
I just tried to eject it and it will not eject. I used every method to eject a DVD that I could find. The drive makes the usual eject sounds but nothing happens.
I viewed the slot in the side of my Macbook with a flashlight. I have no idea if this is normal or not but there seems to be a cardboard barrier blocking the slot. The cardboard barrier has a thin line across the middle from one end to the other.
I've read this dicussion topic and found nothing like this problem.
Thanks to everyone for any advice.

Functioning optical drives don't act like that, so it sounds like you have an optical drive that has failed. I would suggest calling Apple (800-275-2273) and having them set up a repair. Mail in repairs can often be completed in under a week.
    Best of luck.

    Hello again,
Sorry that I wasn't much help, however I just remembered this site, which lists everything that can be added to any mac, and they have a list of drives that will work. Even if it doesn't solve your query, it's a useful site to know.

  • IMac optical disc drive error

Hey there... first things first Im new in this discussions forum. Ok, here's my problem...
Something wrong with my optical disc in my iMac. I inserted a disc into the drive but few seconds later it ejects back the disc. I thought the disc is damaged so I inserted another disc but same thing happened, it gets ejected back.
Then, I turned off the computer to let it cooldown first. When I turned again and try to insert a disc things gone worse. The disc can only be inserted half of it. So anyone please help me or I just send to Apple repair centre as a last resort.

Omg... i felt very sorry that Im posting at a wrong forum topic... please pardon me.

  • How direct md5 to check files on optical disc

    Hello,
I've got several optical discs (bd-r) for which I have an md5 of the entire disc's contents. But the md5 file is on hard drive (not onboard the optical disc) and I can't seem to figure out how to direct the md5 to compare hashes with files on the optical disc (or any mounted volume for that matter). I've tried editing the md5 line(s) to read:
6670882691e48719b377e09a6b7c1303  /mnt/[name of disc or volume]/[name of file]
    and tried:
6670882691e48719b377e09a6b7c1303  /volumes/[name of disc or volume]/[name of file]
and so on....with and without leading slashes...
    ...no luck so far.
Is it possible to get an md5 to access a mounted volume/optical disc?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks Bob,
Yes, I'm using the saved md5 (and adding "/volumes/[name of disc]/....." to each line, to compare to the currently mounted media.
I'll try in some different apps, per your suggestion that it may be inherent to CHECKSUM+ app.
Your concept of using the "md5 unix command line utility" to generate from the disc and then compare to original md5 could work. Is this utility already part of the OS? and can it generate hashes for entire directory with subfolders? (doing one file at a time would not be feasible).
I tried dropping the optical disc into CHECKSUM+ to generate another hash page (with the intent to compare it to the original hash sheet using KDIFF), but it gave an error - didn't like the concept, I guess of generating hashes for a read-only volume? or didn't know where to drop the resulting hash file?
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

  • How do I Turn off my Optical Disc Drive - Satellite: P745-S4217

I would like to turn off the Optical Disk Drive because the ODD checks for a disc every now and then, very randomly (I can hear and feel the laser tray move around looking for a disc, I can't imagine that it is very good for it to do this so often) and also to save power.
I have read that some (most) computers have Optical Drive power management options where they can turn ons and turn offs setting but on my computer (Satellite: P745-S4217) there is no option for me to change the "Optical Drive power management" once I get into the TOSHIBA Power Saver Settings - I can only change "Cooling Method"
Also, I have options when I right-click on the icon in my taskbar...  I can enable "Optical drive auto lock" and then choose between three "Unlock time settings": one, three, or five seconds. But it doesn't change anything.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

So have you tried all the tricks posted online? The best one for me is to take a thin piece of plastic like from a salad container. Fold it over and make two "lips". Insert that into the drive and it will help guide the disc out.
Is your MBP under warranty? Then take it in. Don't void your warranty.
    Otherwise use the iFixIt guide:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_13%22_Unibody_Mid_2012
    for the non retina.
Disconnect the optical drive cable. If it's really stuck and you feel up to it you can take the drive out and and take it apart (guides all over the net) to remove the disc.
However it sounds like the disc isn't that stuck so any of those tricks should work.

  • Export back to XDcam optical disc

I am back to Premiere after using both Avid and Final Cut Pro for many years. Premiere has come a long way since version 5.1. Happy so far but have a few issues I can't seem to solve.
If I needed to export an edit back to XDCam optical disk from Premiere Pro how do I do that?

    Hello Marcus,
You need to install the latest Sony FAM-driver on your Mac for writing your edit back to the disc. I guess that's all.
Importing goes now via the "Media Browser" as I understand it correct. I believe therefore XDCAM Transfer software isn't needed anymore, but I think it wouldn't hurt to have it installed too.
When your edited sequence is written back to the disc, you’re able to play it out on your PDW-700 via the SDI or HDSDI connection.
I still use FCP7 so how it all precisely goes in Premiere, I do not know for sure. I'm sorry for that! Production Premium CS5.5 is installed on my Mac, but haven't used Premiere Pro. Shortly I will be switching to CS6.
Here are some other movies for the PDW-700. In part 4 Andy explains how to write back to the 700 with FCP. I assume it's almost the same with Premiere.

  • Qosmio G50-10J: How to replace the Optical Disc Drive (ODD)?

    Hello there,
the optical drive of my Qosmio G 50 is not working properly anymore, it reads only some movie-DVDs, but sadly no videogameDVDs at all, so I cannot instal any games.
The warranty has already expired too. So I wanted to ask if it is possible to change the drive myself, if it is then how should I do it, and if by doing it would the laptop be in
    serious risk of getting damaged?
I would be very thankful for every tip and every help you guys can give me!!!
    Best regards,
    a.z.

    Hi
In different cases the ODD replacement is not very tricky.
If you want you can check this forum category.
Here you can find some videos how to replace the ODD on different notebook models:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=115
Here is also a nice Youtube channel which provides the instructions how to replace the ODD:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/toshibaeuropesupport
But maybe the ODD laser lens is dirty. In my case I could solve similar issue cleaning the laser lens using a cotton-wool tip and alcohol.
    But be careful doing this!

  • Have I wasted my money going Mac?  Optical Disc Issue!

This is strange but when using OSX and I insert a disc in my DVD drive sometimes it sees it and sometimes it doesn't and it wont then let me eject it. However if I then restart my machine it will see it and let me eject it (so far).
The discs I've tried have been audio CD's and also the OSX Installation discs and I just cannot figure out a pattern to it. Just reinstalled the OS and worked fine as usual until I inserted the OS DVD again.
When this phenomenon occurs I cannot log out and test it as another user account as per Apple Supports suggestion as it goes to a plain blue screen with the timer wheel just spinning and also cannot restart without holding in the power button.
Its driving me nuts and I've spoken to Apple Phone support who just advise if it's a software glitch and I take it to the Apple store they will charge me and it will take at least 2 weeks...what so I do?
Works fine when booted into Vista every time...
    Aaaargh

If the iMac is under one year old, you are covered by the one-year warranty.
I got my Power Mac G5 repaired for a hardware issue in three days, by taking it to an Apple Store. I don't see how any phone tech support person can say it will take two weeks without even knowing what is wrong.
If it was me, I would back up any personal data I have on the iMac, and reinstall Mac OS X from the original discs. Use the Option to +Erase and Install+. That would basically confirm it is a hardware problem, if the problem recurs, because you are using fresh installation. If the problem does not recur, you've fixed your problem; restore your data and rock on...
If you need more details on reinstalling Mac OS X, please post back.

  • Importing HDCAM HD optical disc problems

We have upgraded from FCP7 to FCP10.07 and have purchsed Sony Browser 2.1. This crashes regularly and will not import directly into FCP10 as we were able to do with FCP7. Any cures for this? Any alternative methods? Would it be better if we went back to the XDCAM import programme that we used to use for FCP7?

Would you know if the "Detachable Drive: No" means that this one cannot be replaced with a new one?
Hmm, I had never noticed that before, though I think it refers to the fact that the drive is not connected to an external interface like FW or USB.  Here is what my System Profiler reports on my laptop's internal optical:
    MATSHITADVD-R   UJ-846:
      Model:          MATSHITADVD-R   UJ-846
      Revision:          FA0G
      Serial Number:
      Detachable Drive:          No
      Protocol:          ATAPI
      Unit Number:          1
      Socket Type:          Internal
Whereas on this PM G5, I brought up a drive on a USB dock and get the following:
    External:
      Capacity:          931.51 GB
      Removable Media:          Yes
      Detachable Drive:          Yes
All of the internals answer "No" to Detachable Drive, so I expect that my guess above is correct.
I found a few UK listings for super drive replacements with a Google search, so you should be in good shape.

  • Optical Disc Drive won't take discs

I took my Macbook into the Apple Store last week, because the processor failed. I just got it back from being repaired yesterday, and all seemed fine when I wanted to play The Sims 3 this evening and my macbook wouldn't even take the disc when I tried to put it in. It just sits there about most of the way in, and when I try to push the rest it in, there's no noises and nothing grabbing it, just sort of a spring trying to push it back out to me.
Did someone forget to put something back when they repaired it? Because it was working just fine before. I've tried SMC and PRAM resets, nothing. Does this mean I have to make another trip to the Apple Store?

Try holding down the eject button while booting up the computer.
Once it has booted up fully try inserting a disc again.
If this doesn't resolve it, and you have tried an SMC reset, and the other steps outlined at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801 under the "drive doesn't accpet discs" sub-heading, then take it back to trhe dealer.
    Cheers

  • Canon iP4300 green/magenta cast only on optical discs

    Hello,
I've encountered very strange problem with my printer.
It only occurs while choosing to print on optical disk.
For testing purpose I'm printing rectangular black to white gradient. After printing I get strong green cast on gradient and magenta glow or shadow on upper and left (darker) sides of gradient.
I know it sounds unbelievable but I'm not over exaggerating problem.
Most mysterious thing is that it happens only when choosing to print on CD/DVD.
I also checked printing on circle of plain paper (same result).
Problem make printing on optical media unusable.
I was trying to print from two different Mac Pro's and received exactly same problem.
On both Macs I'm using Snow Leopard (not upgraded form Leopard) 10.6.2 and latest drivers downloaded through Software Update (on second computer drivers probably where installed from downloaded drivers from Canon's webpage).
I'm printing on DVD rarely but it's important door me. I don't remember if it ever was fine since move to Snow Leopard.
While on Leopard I didn't encountered such problem.
It is also application independent - same result from InDesign Photoshop and Preview.
Has any one have any idea what is going on?
Thank You in advance for help.
    Best Regards

Canon's driver have option to print on CDs and I was using this ability for more then 100 disks (probably only in Leopard).
I've downloaded CD-LabelPrint and got same issue.
I also checked Gutenprint driver prints without my primary issue but introduces new problems.
It loads CD tray to fare inside printer and it hits limiter on the CD tray it is very unpleasant view.
Besides it doesn't hold color correction settings in presets.
Final inconvenience is that it allows only 600 x 600 dpi printing.
Thank you for Your ideas. They seemed that they will help.
    I'm looking forward more help.
Thank You in advance for Your time.
    Best Regards
