L-R Audio Balance

Hi,
Just out of curiosity, is there a way to adjust the L-R audio balance in the Classic??? I have a good 50% hearing loss in my left ear. At one time I was almost deaf in that ear so a 50% loss for me is pretty good! On my computer and home stereo I have the left side louder to compensate for that loss.
Thanks In Advance
Abb N

Abber,
I have posted about this lacking feature a couple of times and indeed there seems to be no solution. It may help to visit www.apple.com/feedback and put in a feature request as I have done.
I do find it odd that such a rudimentary control should be missing from something as versatile as the iPod touch, in fact, I see absolutely no reason for it's lack of inclusion.

  • Audio balance greatly different in Encore CS3 after encoding 5.1 master track in Premiere Pro CS3

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can offer some advice for my DVD audio problem.
I have a Premiere Pro CS3 project with a 5.1 master track that appears to behave correctly judging by the meters when I play it in PP. It also sounds reasonable (in a mixed-down fashion, I guess) on my PC system's speakers (L,R,LFE), and all rebalancing and panning seems to work well. However, once I export the master track to Encore using PP's SurCode Dolby Digital codec, the resulting audio mix is totally off. Here's what I get: both front channels play mainly out of the right front and center speakers, and the rear channels play mainly out of the left front speaker. I've tried all different settings, but I can't seem to change this. Well I've read that Encore just sends the audio mix straight through (the DVD trancode status is "Don't transcode"), but when I build the DVD and play it on both of my 5.1 surround systems, the results are just as bad as what my desktop PC speakers were hinting at. [Actually all DVDs that Encore builds are UNSUPPORTED on one of my set-top DVD players and they're both Panasonic! So first, I first have to copy the DVD using Nero and then the copy is accepted by all. That seems to have no bearing on my audio dilemma but I thought I'd mention it. I would love to know what Nero is doing right that Encore is doing wrong!)
Anyway, here's some background: I began to notice this problem with the audio balancing whenever a .wav music source is imported into PP as a stereo source. [A side issue here - I don't seem to be able to explain - or control - how one .wav file gets imported as stereo while another is imported as 5.1!] Anyway, as one would expect, since my master track is 5.1, the stereo track is automatically set up with a rebalancing tray with the puck set in the middle. The meters show that the source is stereo and the sound has been rebalanced across the master track. If I drag the puck around, the master meters behave accordingly. Then I import my video (.avi video clip) and that sound is imported as a stereo track. For that track, I drag the puck to the rear. Again, the master meters respond correctly. So far so good. But when I export to Encore, the resulting audio mix so completely wrong it can't even be explained as a 5.1-to-stereo downmix situation. The sounds that were supposed to come out of the rear channels are in front left and center (and deafening), overpowering the music that is only coming out of front right. And the rear speakers are silent unless I turn on Pro-Logic on my amplifier, which just confuses the issue. I didn't bother to check LFE as things were bad enough.
Where I DO NOT have the problem is when the audio file is imported as a 5.1 source (although it is just a stereo CD track ripped using Sony CD Architect). In that case, there is no rebalancing tray and the track meter shows only the L and R channels active, as expected. Ditto for the master track. Now if I go ahead and send the music to a stereo submix track and let that rebalance to the master, I see all channels active. But that results in the problem above after exporting to Adobe Media Encoder using SurCode and then importing the audio into Encore. If I don't remix to 5.1, the audio on the DVD is OK. But I would like to have the music come out of all speakers when there isn't a video soundtrack as there are many still pictures in the presentation.
So the question is, if I can rebalance and pan channels in PP CS3, why are the results coming out all wrong in Encore using SurCode? And how can I hear my project on DVD the same way I mixed in PP?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Problem solved everyone!!!
Rebecca of Adobe support helped me identify the root cause: project was originally set up as standard (2-channel) and although it had evolved to a 5.1 project over time, it could never grow up to be anything other than a standard audio project. After you set up the new project, the setting that controls your audio is buried in the project somewhere. Changing your project settings to set up new 5.1 audio tracks for new timelines does NOT make the project 5.1! The real audio identity attribute set at birth is not alterable OR EVEN VISIBLE (even as a grayed-out project setting) although PP will allow you to set up and mix 5.1 audio tracks at will. So you may think you're working on a 5.1 project now, but you're only fooling yourself and PP goes right along with it. Even the .ac3 files you create via export are 5.1! But dare to build your DVD in Encore and all of your timelines are transcoded back to 2.0 instantly. Resistance is futile.
A new feature in PP CS4 will allow you to view, and even CHANGE, your project's audio identify from standard to 5.1. How sweet!
Well, I've devised a way to dig out myself out of this deep hole in CS3 and it worked, but I can't promise that it will work for everyone. (This assumes you own the Dolby Digital 5.1 codec from Minnetonka.)
    1. Create a new Premiere Pro project as 5.1 audio from the get-go.
    2. Import your suspected 2.0 project into this new 5.1 project and click each sequence to flesh out the timeline.
    3. Re-export all audio as elemental streams using Adobe Media Encoder. Make sure you export the audio component of each timeline as Dolby Digital 5.1 and exactly - and I mean EXACTLY - the same way. To deviate the audio settings for each timeline is to ask for trouble, so I recommend setting up an audio pre-set that you can just click when you need it.
    4. Create a new Encore project and import all original video assets and your new replaced and, hopefully, 5.1 audio assets into it.
    5. In Encore, create a separate timeline for each pair of assets (.m2v and .ac3 for example). DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLACE MULTIPLE PAIRS OF ASSETS ON THE SAME TIMELINE! For some unexplained reason, the build process will transcode the audio back to 2.0, and if you continue pack new 5.1 audio assets on the same timeline, you will get an error message "an input contract violation has occurred" because you now have 2.0 and 5.1 assets on the same timeline, even though you really don't know that and didn't ask for that to happen anyway. (Thanks to Bill Hunt who mentioned his habit of keeping the asset pairs on separate timelines in another thread - that suggestion was absolutely essential to the solution here.)
    6. In Encore, check to make sure that all of your original video sychs up correctly with the new, true 5.1 audio. Link the end actions of each timeline with the next timeline to play in the correct sequence. Check your project for orphan timelines and other errors. Then, before you start building menus and start getting fancy, build a DVD and make sure it plays as 5.1 on your system.
Tip #1: while you're re-exporting and replacing the audio files, don't have Encore running. I've seen it gracefully and automatically re-import the replaced file once the export is done, but I have also seen it choke with the terribly descriptive "Encore has encountered a problem" message upon discovered the asset is not available while it is being replaced. Encore then continues to mark the asset as offline.
Tip #2: when re-exporting and replacing files, always select audio and video separately. For some reason, Encore will allow you to replace an .ac3 file when you perform an elemental audio export, but when you try to combine video and audio and both files exist, Encore will prompt you to replace the video, but immediately abort with an error that it cannot replace the .ac3 file, thus forcing you to delete the .ac3 component manually before trying again.

  • Audio Balance issue in Windows XP Pro SP3 using Boot Camp

    Hi,
It seems that my Windows audio isn't balanced after launching with Boot Camp. The right speaker is fine, but the left speaker sounds soft and faint. I discovered this when playing with the audio balance in volume control. I'm not facing the same issue in Max OS X.
I have already downloaded the latest Realtek audio drivers and still no luck. Has anyone encountered this, and know of a solution? I use both OSes extensively and playing music is a must..
    Thanks!

First you said: "I spend 15 minutes changing the product key, calling up 1-888-571-2048 and entering the long string
of numbers, then entering the conformation code and then it is finally activated."
Then you said: "guess that was a big fat lie."
These are in direct opposition.  You were able to activate your install.  They never said that they would keep the serves running, just that you would be able to activate, and you have.
Please do not read this sentence. Please ignore the previous sentence.
    A big fat +1, sir!

  • Update OSX 10.9.2: audio balance constantly changes to the right

    Hi,
after the update to OSX 10.9.2 my audio balance constantly changes to a right side value. Whenever I center the balance manually the balance will change again to a right side value after a while. Can I do something about this?

    Hello H.M. Mcluhan,
It sounds like the balance keeps going to the right speaker and needs to be constantly changed to center. I recommend starting by resetting your PRAM:
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information.
Then boot to Safe Mode, and restart the computer to test the issue again:
    Starting up in Safe Mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.

so if i want to listen to music with headphones i gotta do this to get a balanced audio output
it was working fine then one day just went all weird.
theres been several installs of windows since this happend and it does it under linux as well.
would actualy like to fix this
speacialy since im running some nice senhizers now...

    Hi 1ajs,
    Thank you for the reply!
The driver version installed in your system is incorrect; I think this was taking from Windows generic driver from Windows update. Before confirming that it is a hardware issue, can you uninstall the current driver from Device manager, it may give you a pop to restart the system do not restart. Download the latest driver from the below link and install it after that restart the system.

  • How to adjust audio balance (left or right speaker) in Logic 9?

    Hi,
I am playing a midi file with several instruments in Logic. Some of the instruments seem to output from the left speaker only, while others are from the right speaker only.
In each instrument there is a small circular graphic with a number (its either -50 or +50 depending on the instrument). It seems that changing this value adjusts the balance:
ie. -50 = left speaker only
         +50 = right speaker only
         0 = Both speakers equally.
After I change the values to 0, the audio plays through both speakers (this is what I want). But the moment I rewind the midi file, all instruments go back to their previous values of -50 or + 50. How do I make sure that the settings remain the way I want, and don't go back to what they were when I rewind?
    Thanks.

    Hi
It seems likely that the Regions created from the MIDI file have embeded Pan (CC10) and likely Volume (CC7) messages. Open each and every region in the Event list, and delete all CC10 (& CC7) events.

  • L-R Audio Balance Problem w/Captivate 4

We are recording a software demo with narration using Captivate 4 and a Samson CO1U USB microphone.
When we listen to the project playback the audio is heavily to the left.  We have to turn up the balance to the right as far as possible to get any sound from the right.
The same computer/mic records .WAV files outside of Captivate with perfect balance.
Is there a way to correct this in Captivate?

  • What is the standard for audio balancing in FCP?

    Hi Guys,
I am cutting a feature film shot on DVX 100, they used boom mic to capture the audio,
the sound man control the sound around -18, however, the boom mic captured dialogus with the ambiance sound as well, for some particular outside scenes, the environment sound is pretty loud and noisy.
What I did was to minor the audio level slight lower, bring the level of audio to -2 (as original level is 0 from the audio clip, not the audio meter) however, after I did that, I preview the video from a sony monitor, and audio I connected to the sony monitor through the firewire ( so... the sound is not from my Rokit speakers, it's from the monitor) the problem came out, the level is too low, if normal video s audio level on the monitor, I will probably set 40, this feature film, i need to bring up to 70....
I predict that there must be something wrong with it for outputting. however, if i keep the audio level higher, the environment ambiance sound will be very loud.
    so my question is
should I keep the audio level low for safety reason?
or should I just bring up the level for just in case audience cant hear it? ( the the ambiance will be noisy
How do deal with this problem?
Any suggestions or advises are highly appreciated!
    Hiro

If the ambience is something like an AC unit or other steady source, you could try and find a section of the audio that is only the ambience, sample it and try suppressing it/subtracting it from your audio track with soundtrack pro. This would improve your desired audio to ambient noise ratio.

  • Left-Right Audio Balance

Couldn't find any discussion of this using "Search". I have a slight hearing loss in one ear. Consequently, when listening with headphones, there is a shift of the sound stage to the "better" side. There does not appear to be any adjustment for that in the iPod (as some speaker systems have). Does it seem feasible for Apple to include something like this in an update, or do I have to purchase some kind of external audio control?

    Hello,
I had not yet heard of this iOS6 problem before. Try a reset, which will not erase any data or settings.
    Reset the Device:
Hold the power button and the home button down until the device shuts off, then power it back on and see if the problem is resolved.
If this does not fix the problem, try doing it again while the music is playing and the slider option open. I have no idea whether that will work or not, but it's worth a shot.
I hope this helps you out.

  • Osascript causes audio balance to shift.

    Hi,
    Whenever I use this command: osascript -e 'set Volume N' where N is 0, 1, 2,....
the balance shifts back to center.  I need the balance set shifted slightly right.
The only way I can find to set it back, is to open the preferences window, click on the speaker icon and manually reset the balance.
Is there either  (1) any way to prevent this from happening? or (2) from a command similar to the above, to reset the balance?
    Thanks for your help,
    Andynic.

The only way I've found to set the balance is to GUI script the Preferences pane.
Try Setting Sound Balance with AppleScript from MacScripter.
BTW questions concerning Applescript are best posted to Mac OS X Technologies

I jus got my new Ipod installed Itunes and loaded with music.. When I plugged the headphones, SURPRISE!!! MY IPOD SOUNDS MONO!!!! THE SOUND COMES OUT JUST FOR ONE EAR.. I TRIED DIFFERENT SETS OF HEADPHONES BUT IT'S THE SAME WITH ALL OF THEM... I re-installed the Itunes and restored my Ipod, but the problem persists.
I checked on the Ipod's menu and it hasn't balance options!!! Does this means that my Ipod is defective??
    Has this happened to anybody????

It sounds like the contacts on one side of your headphone jack are broken. Since you just got it, return it and get another one.
