L20 and IBM tape drive
Hi all,
I have StorageTek L20 robot (FW 2.12.06) and IBM Ultrium-TD1 tape drive (FW:59C0) which i updated with latest firmware.
Now robot cannot recognise tape drive, with code: 00 Unknown Drive
I assume this is firmware related problem, so the question is:
Will robot firmware update to version 2.15.03 resolve this issue, and bring online my backup?
I have used external IBM SCSI drive with Solaris8 and legato without any issues.
What kind of a tape drive is it? What is the Sun Hardware platform being used? Are there any messages logged just before the panic? Is st.conf configured properly? Is there a problem on the scsi bus?
You might want to send the core files to Sun, if you have got suport on the box or use kdb yourself.

BRtools Two-Phase-Backup to remote disk and remote tape drive
Hello,
i want to two-phase-backup a SAP-System to a remote disk and from there to a tape drive.
Backup to remote disk works fine, but can i use brtools to write the backup-files from the remote machine to a tape drive that is connected to the remote machine?
I'm using SLES 10 on both machines.
I can't find anything on the SAP Documentation to this. It ist possible to backup to remote disk and to remote tape, but it is not clear that it works when in Phase 1 of the backup the files are written to a remote disk. It seems like i can only tell brtools to backup the files from a local disc to a remote tape-drive, is this right?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards
PhilHi Nirmal,
thanks for your answer.
But i can do disk to tape Backups, when i choose "Backup of Disk Backup" from BRtools, i see a list of all Backups i wrote to the local disk and can write them to remote tape by using pipe as backup device.
The only thing is, my Backups are stored on a remote disk, and from there it seems i have to write them to tape with cronjobs using a shell script. That's not my favourite solution, but it's ok.

Hi,
I am currently implementing Oracle Secure Backup. My environment is this:
OS: Windows Server 2003 (32Bit) for all servers
Database: Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0
Tape Library: IBM-ULT 3580-TD4
I will have to configure 2 machines to work with OSB: server01 and server02.
Server01:
This serves as the client, admin, mediaserver
Server02:
This will serve as the client, admin
When I log in to Server01, in the device manager, I can see the Tape Drives (no warnings, no questions marks) so I think it's good.
When I log in to Server02, in the device manager, there are no Tape Drives seen. Is is ok or shall i configure the IBM Tape drives to be also accessible since this is just the client, admin host?
Also I have noticed that when I installed the OSB in Server02 (client, admin), when I am on the SCSI Devices, i dont see any tape device (since its not in the device manager). Because of this i cannot start OSB Services and cannot add this host to the mediaserver.
Also, I am having issues Configuring the Library and the devices. I have read the official documentation completely but i think its very general and it does not present the detailed step-by-step process in installing and configuring OSB.
When I issued: lsdev -lvg in the mediaserver , I can read an error: Warning: bus info unknown or drive not installed.
Help is very much appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!I have resolved the issue. Ill close this thread. :))

We're running SLES 10 SP3/OES2 SP2 on a Dell server with an IBM LTO-4 tape drive and Arkeia Network Backup software. Sometimes our backups fail because the tape drive, /dev/st0, has disappeared from the system. The server may run for weeks or just days before it happens - we can't find any pattern. The only solution we've found is to reboot the server. Then /dev/st0 is visible again, and the tape drive works fine.
I've called Dell about this multiple times over the last two years. They've replaced the tape drive, and we install the latest firmwares as they become available. Dell doesn't seem to know what to do any more, figuring it's an OS issue.
Any suggestions on how to (1) troubleshoot the problem, (2) prevent it, or (3) fix the problem when it occurs without needing to reboot?jcw av wrote:

Are you sure it is not an issue at the controller level. I would have looked
there right away. What kind of controller is it using. I went through a
similar issue and finally popped a different brand controller in the system
and used it and never saw the issue again. Also cables can go bad as well.
Believe I have seen that one many times.

Do you get the startup config when you do a show start
And by the way why are you copying the startup config into the running config?

We are soon going to be shooting everything in HD (moving up from 4:3 SD)
What are the best options you have found to work for storing data long-term?
Going to HD tape is NOT an option, so I figured that tape drives are the best solution. Cost is an issue, so I'm looking for a reasonably priced product.
Are there some that are better than others?
THXHI Paul, I recently have had some great success with Ultrium LTO4 tape drives in a P2 workflow on native OSX. I use TOLISGROUPS BRU-PE (beta), HP AND QUantum tape drives with both ATTOTECH expressas and LSI SA HBAs in a MACPRO.
For all the detail and comments look at:

I very happy with this workflow and its not that expensive.

morning, mr
i have a SUN blade 1500, solaris 9, i attached Fujitsu tape drive 3480/90 M2488C, in adaptec scsi (se) card, but i don see the drive in solaris, the scsi card is good (tested) and Fujitsu tape drive is good (tested).
Please, what i need to do?, what command, patches? i don know wath to do
thank you
victor RodriguezConsider using a SCSI card that has been qualified to work in a SPARC-based system.

Adaptec brand cards do not work in that architecture.
They work in PeeCee's. -

Tape Drive and Library Compatibility Matrix - Oracle Secure Backup Express
Does Oracle Secure Backup Express support IBM System Storage TS3200 Tape Library with two Tape Drives?
Regards
RadoThat library is listed on the support matrix which applies to both OSB-XE and OSB:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/secure-backup/pdf/Tape_Devices10.2.pdf
Keep in mind that OSB-XE licensing restricts usage to one server direct attached to one tape drive. Per your post, your library has 2 tape drives which cannot be used with OSB-XE but certainly could with OSB. -
Tape drive and pci-x card with Solaris 10 on VMWare environment
I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
- Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
- In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

Any ideas? Maybe a need to update the MPT driver or is that dangerous?
ThanksActually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

ob>mkdev -t library -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt1 -v -l vlib -d 1 vt1
ob>mkdev -t library -o -S 2 -a test:/d01/secure/vt2 -v -l vlib -d 2 vt2
Insert Volume
now here is where i am confuse .....
ob>insertvol -L vlib -c 512 unlabeled 1-2
now how to insertvol in tapes .....by above command is this volume available to all tapes in that library.
actually i want that i have two tapes vt1 and vt2 ,both should have space 512 mb now when i take full database backup through rman ....after when vt1 becomes full it start utilizing other tape vt2 automatically.
plz helpppppppppthank you ....but please can u check that what i have done...i am giving detail......plzzz
STEP 1)
ob> mkdev -t library -o -S 2 -a test:/d01/secure/vlib -v vlib
ob> insertvol -L vlib -c 512 unlabeled 1-2
ob> lsvol -L vlib
Inventory of library vlib:

in 2: unlabeled, barcode feef494efdea10285e7000c2944f637
ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt1 -v -l vlib -d 1 vt1
ob> lsvol -L vlib -D vt1
Inventory of library vlib:
* in 1: unlabeled, barcode fec96134fdea10285e7000c2944f637
* in 2: unlabeled, barcode feef494efdea10285e7000c2944f637
*: in use list
ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt2 -v -l vlib -d 2 vt2
ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt3 -v -l vlib -d 3 vt3
STEP 2)
Then i created backup storage as RMAN default and selected vt1 as tape.
after that with rman i took full database backup.

2 tape drives and arcserve 11?
I acknowledge this is perhaps not the place to ask the question, but
Novell's forums are far more useful than CA's!
Basically, we've added another U320 SCSI card into our NW6.5 HP Server, and
connected a second Ultrium 2 tape drive.
Can Arcserve drive 2 tape drives, for the purposes of backing up 2 seperate
areas, to seperate tapes?

My Macbook starts up, shows the screen saver, then immediately goes to sleep. I tap the spacebar, it comes back for a second, shows the tool bar and the hard drive icon then immediately "goes to sleep". This can go on forever, on, sleep, on, sleep. I can only see the screen for maybe 3-5 seconds; not enough time to do anything. Someone did step on it, so I don't know if the problem is with screen or ??
Thanks!Hello, Juniorjr2.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This sounds like screen curtain may be enabled. Screen curtain is a feature that allows display privacy. To disable screen curtain while VoiceOver is enabled, you can three finger triple tap the screen to disable this feature. You may need to press the home button once in order to process these steps. If you wish to disable VoiceOver, see the link in the article below.

Hi, I'm facing some strange error from the ABSL editor (syntax checker). In ABSL the loop variables are implicit and don't have to be declared in the head section of the script. My question now is simple: How is the scope/visibility of such loop vari

Is it possible to always limit searches to iTunes Plus music?
I can't find a way to do this, but I may be doing something dumb. Is there a global setting in iTunes to say "Only ever show me music released as iTunes+ tracks?" (i.e. un-DRM-ed AAC) Alternatively, is there a way to add a "Kind" field to iTunes musi
