L3 switching on SMB SGE2010 48 port switch?

Hi,
I'm considering buying the SGE2010 48 port switch. Does anyone know if it can do layer 3 switching? In the administration guide I find references to static routing and VLAN interfaces. But the guide doesn't come out and say "you can do routing like this".
Thanks in Advance,
  Joe

Hi Joe
Personally, If I want a SB stacked Layer 3 switch solution,  the SG500 series or even the SG300 series (if stacking not a requirement) switches are great switches.  The SG300 screen capture below, shows it does come static routing as you can see from a screen capture. But when you add a Vlan to the switch and add a device and a IP address in the associated port, a interface route is automatically created so that Layer 3 switching will occur between VLANs.
The SGx00 series are a couple of generation ahead of the SGE2010 in terms of features and functionality.
SG300 series are a  teremndous (non stackable)switch family that can Layer 3 switch between multiple  vlans.  Just had a software update last week, that expanded the featureset available to our partners and their end users.
Both the 300 and 500 series offer a piece of mind warranty as well.
regards Dave

    Hi all,
I've soldered 3 LEDs to pin 2, pin 6 and pin 9 and pin 25 to ground. I need to control the on off of the 3 pins through Labview. I've modified an example I found in Labview as attached but there are things that I don't understand:
    1. Why is it when I clicked both LED 18 and 22 on Labview, all my 3 LED on breadboard (connectted to pin 2,6,9) turned on?
    2. Why is the "register write value" in Labview consists of 32 LEDs? How can I change it to may be 8 or 3 LED?
    3. If I change the "register write value" to constant, what value or number should I insert to on/ off my LED?
    Please advice.

  • Cannot connect 4-port switch to hub3

Hi, recently had infinity installed and we are absolutely impressed with it and speeds in excess of 75down which is fantastic!
So the setup we have is the router downstairs, and an ethernet going from that to the 4-port switch which was all set up for us by the engineer.
What I wanted to do however, was to plug another 4-port switch (a white 'PEAK' branded wifi switch) into one of the 4 ports of the hub3 in order to increase the capacity up to 7 ethernet sockets.
This setup worked fine when we was with sky over on the old DSL line where the 4-port swtich simply went into skys netgear switch and worked automatic.
However, since switching to bt infinity, for whatever reason, this white switch will not work with BT's hub3.  By plugging a computer into the white switch, i can access the actual routers setup page by typing in 192.168.1.254, and can access all the settings.  The following settings come up...
    INTERNET: Connection Method - DHCP
    Internet IP Address: 192.168.1.67
    LAN: IP Address 192.168.1.254
    LAN: Network Mask 255.255.255.0
    LAN DHCP Server: ON
But like I say, the switch, which has got a cable coming from one of the HUB3's 4 ports into my old white PEAK routers INTERNET port, will not allow my old switch to access the internet.
So im really confused.  Why will my old switch not work on the BT Infinity HUB3?

Thanks for both your replies.  I read them earlier in the day, and been trying a few things out...
1st, I tried plugging the hub3 into lan4 on the peak switch, and the other 2 (sky and roku), along with my laptop for testing purposes into 1, 2 and 3, and all worked great!
Well... all wasnt so great, the connection was sporadic and intermittent, ping was low, and throughput was fast, but it was on and off.  A speedtest.net would stall, web links sometimes took 2 or 3 clicks, and so on.
So what have I learnt?  Well, the fact that it has an internet port (which I was wrongly trying to use before), means that it isnt a basic switch.
So today, I went and bought http://www.tp-link.dk/products/details/?model=TL-SF1005D.  Plugged that in the same way, and everything works perfect!
So now, I have the router (downstairs), plugged into the hub3 (upstairs via existing ethernet run throuth the stairs), 3 ports plugged into 2 pc's and 1 youview box, the 4th into a powerline socket upstairs,, with the other powerline socket plugged in downstairs behind the TV, connecting to the tp-link switch socket 5, with the sky+HD and Roku XL plugged into 1 and 2 on the switch respectively, and after testing I now everything running lightening fast with HD on demand, and the world is good
So thanks for both your advice, i learnt a bit today.

  • Faulty but refused a port switch as they are alloc...

First off someone at BT/Openreach really does need to address what is a truly broken issue management and escallation process at Openreach. It doesn't take much effort to provide feedback and information to Customers yet Openreach appear to be completely incapable of this.
So, 23rd Aug my infinity that has been working for months goes from 22Mbps down/5Mbps up to 10Kbps down/7.5Mbps up - yes, 10k!
I normally use a draytek 2750n so I swapped that out and put back the standard Openreach modem and HH3 that BT supply - no change in speeds.
So I call BT, go through all the normal off and ons until an engineer visit to the house is arranged for the following weds. The engineer spends a few hours trying to sort it out, confirms that all is fine between the house and the cabinet but i need a port switch - Openreach refuse this as the ports are assigned for new installs. I'm supposed to get a call back to arrange this  - no call.
I call BT and they say an engineer will visit the cabinet/exchange on Monday 3rd (this week). I get home in the evening  to find that nothing has changed but do have a message on the answerphone from the Engineer informing me that he has sorted a few things out and given a few days everything will be back to normal - that does happen right?!?
I'm straight on the phone to BT who arrange an engineer who will sort everything out today and call me to confirm so that I can check. I check at 5pm today - no change. I ring BT - Openreach cancelled the Engineer because the engineer from Monday closed his call - after I'd rung on Monday and booked for today.
During this call I was told that the Engineer from Monday 3rd had also requested a port switch and been refused, no spare ports ( again I expect they are reserved for new Customers). So despite the message I'd received he knew that a port switch was required. I'm told that an engineer is now coming onFriday and will check everything is working. My obvious question is 'are there now ports available for existing customers'. The response was that the engineer would find out on Friday and book an Engineer for another date if not.
Now as a customer who has a contract with BT I expect faults to be fixed in a timely manner without constant chasing by myself. I do not expect BT to refuse to fix my fault becuase all spare ports are allocated for new customers - surely a breach of contract.
I've now been without Infinity for 2 weeks and I have little faith that Openreach will resolve it next time or put in place the required Engineers to resolve the problem.
Anyone any ideas how I can get a resolution to the port switch I require and ensure that Openreach do what needs to be done?

So another engineer visit to fix the problem. First of all he tries to get out of switching the port but we stand firm and tell him that two other engineers have already identified the issue. Off he goes to do a lift and switch ?
He comesback, plugs in his magic box and tells my Wife that it says we should get 25mb - I'm guessing that this device just reads the profile rather than testing the line as when he used http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ to test the speed on our laptop rather than any of the BT sites and showed my Wife that he had managed to get 5Mbps and not to worry as this would increase back over 20Mbps overnight. He did mention that
I get home this evening to discover that we are getting 10k downstream, 4.5m up. How is this possible - well the only way I can think is that the ports have been switched back again. Even if thats not the case why would the speed decrease from what he tested to such a degree and why would he expect the speed to increase by 400%+ overnight?
So, 15 days after reporting the fault, 3 engineers, 3 hours on the phone to a call centre that isnt even the company responsible for the problem and the only thing that has been acheived is a slight reduction in upstream speed. Unreal
Oh, and the call I was promised by a manager in India that would be between 7 pm and 8 tonight to confirm that everything was fixed - i guess it was too much to expect that to happen.
Here's hoping that the Mods are able to help as I don't know what else to do.

Can you see the Canon EOS camera and image files using Windows Explorer? If not disconnect the camera, close all applications' shutdown Windows, and TURN OFF the power to your system and ALL connected devices. Disconnect all phones, iPads, and any other USB devices and restart your system.
Retry Windows Explorer and see if your camera is showing. If so try LR import again.

  • Using 79xx Phone PC access port to connect a Netgear 5 port switch

Cisco documentation indicates that on 79xx phones you can "Use the PC access port to connect a network device, such as a computer, to the phone".  What types of problems might be encountered if that device is a Netgear Fast Ethernet Unmanaged FS105 five port switch?  Is there any documentation indicating whether this "supported" or "not supported"?
I know that the speed on the devices connected to the Netgear will be cut to 10/100.  The devices connected to the Netgear would include - at a minimum - a computer and a Cisco wireless access point.  Other devices which might be connected could include additional computers and/or a printer.
The computer(s) would also need to access a distributed video stream daily.
    We are running CallManager 8.6.2.21900-5 with phone types: 7940, 7941, 7945, 7965
Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide.

Will Cisco support you doing this? Not likely.
Will it work? I suppose, in theory, it should. Just don't complain if it doesn't.

  • 4 port switch to 8 port 1GB, iMac loses ethernet cable

We are getting prepped for an upgrade from our 10MB internet service to 1GB fiber.  We were trying to do the easy things first, but have run into an unexpected problem.
We use a 4 port switch to distribute our current DSL signal to several locations in the house (never with any problem.)  To handle the additional speed and add extra spots, we bought and installed an 8 port 1GB switch in exactly the same location.  Everything works as previously except my iMac.
For whatever reason (and I would LOVE to hear opinions on why) the Mac now says it does not see an ethernet cable (the same cable, of course) and I lose the internet.  The only change is the switch itself.
Am I missing a requirement for changing settings on the Mac to deal with this switch?  We have not changed the input speed, we are still on a 10MB DSL.  We're stumped.
BTW, if I plug the 8 port switch in, and use a 1GB USB dongle with my current ethernet cable, the iMac works fine.  And it still works with the 4 port switch.  Definitely not a cable problem.  Stumped.  Many thanks for any and all ideas.

Thanks for both your replies.  I read them earlier in the day, and been trying a few things out...

  • Replacing high density port switch/blade strategy

    Hello,
I'm looking for strategies in replacing 48 port blades/switches while minimizing downtime. Our management wants to know how long it would take to replace a switch and re-cable it. So I'm trying to find some best practices on replacing switches/blades and how to maintain cable to port integrity when moving between switches/blades. The only thing I've really found comes from data center infrastructure, where they stress the importance of labelling cables.
I was wondering if anyone else had other strategies they use when replacing high density port switches/blades
    Thanks in advance

patrickpaez wrote: Leo,Thanks for the response. What about places where your rack or chasis is full and you have to remove the exsisting chasis or blade inorder to add the replacement equipement?
    Label, Label, Label.
I can't stress it enough, especially if you're trying to do a "mirror" replacement and have everything working exactly the same as it was before. Don't rely on memory, don't rely on out-of-date documentation - label every cable
If you're talking physical switches, then configure them FIRST to match your existing configuration (VLAN's, SVI's, Trunks etc etc), then label *every* cable plugged into your existing switch, pull the old one out, mount the new one, then put your cables back into place based on the labels.
If you're talking blades, the process is about the same except you *shouldn't* have to worry about configuring first - if you're doing a slot-for-slot replacement, the port designations should remain the same, and your existing config should just take effect on reboot.
If it's an additional module in an empty slot, just plug the module in, duplicate the configuration from the existing module, and move your cables one-by-one to matching ports on the new blade.
    Cheers
Trap for new players in blade/modular environments - make DAMN sure the IOS version you're running actually supports the module you're installing - or you're going to end up in a mess!

    Hi MaxEnergy,
Can you say what make/model of PC you are using? I have this same problem (not booting) with my ThinkPad - and I've seen mention of it on other websites - also in relation to ThinkPads. In my case it has nothing to do with the USB-PS/2 convertor, it's the KVM switch being incompatible with the ThinkPad, but I can't find any answers anywhere....
I've used my KVM switch with a USB-PS/2 convertor for years without any issues.

  • Best way to connect 2 Cisco 3750 PoE 24-port Switches

Hello. I have 2 Cisco 3750 PoE 24-port switches in a small office environment. Right now I have a trunk configured off my ASA 5505 to switch 1, and then just an access port configured on a port (switch 1) and an access port configured on a port (switch 2) to connect them together. These switches also have 2 GB SFP ports but they are not being used in this configuration.
I was curious to know if anyone had any better recommend configurations for connecting these 2 switches together? I'm not sure if this particular model can be stacked?

What are the exact model numbers (should be written on a sticker)?
You will know if they can be stacked as you will see the 2x stack ports on the back of each switch :)
If they can then that is probably the way to go unless you want to keep them as separate switches for some reason.
If you want them separate, I would connect them via a Trunk link at least so you can have the same Vlans on both.
    Thanks

  • 8 port or 16 port switch

I am using 8 port and 16 port switches in my organization. Is there any way to block the ports since there is no IOS that comes in these switches?

The SD216 is an unmanaged switch, so there's no way to block the ports from
    software.
    What you could possibly do:
block the ports physically: stuff something in the unused ports, like vax or something. This will void your warranty, though.
if you have a managed switch between this SD216 and the rest of the network, assign static MAC addresses on that switch and disable dynamic learning.

  • EZXS16W linksys 16 port switch, can open homepages but cannot navigate anywhere else.

I recently installed a network for a friends business. They have 8 computers for their network. To start I connected the cable modem to a linksys wireless n router and then i have plugged in a EZXS16W linksys 16 port switch. Everything has been working fine for about a month until last week. Everything starts fine in the mornings when they turn on all the computers and continues to work fine for a couple of hours. After that they can open up their homepages (each computer has a different one) but when you try to go to another web page it can take up to 10 minutes or never load at all. If i restart the router and switch everything goes back to normal for several hours then happens again. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Are you facing these problem on all your Wired Computer or certain wired computer? In these case i would suggest you to lower down the MTU size on your Router from 1500 to 1350 and then check if you face these same problem or not.
If the same problem persist then i think you need to upgrade the firmware of your Router.

  • Limit bandwidth per port switch/VLANs?

I am using a switch to create multiple VLANs. Each network has a separate VLAN port on my 3550 configured. I want to control the bandwidth that port uses and restrict it. Is is there a simple command to do this or will I need QoS.
    Basically Fast0/1 - max bandwidth out/in (300K/400K)and so on..
    thanks in advance!

You need to configure Policing that will limit the rate users can use going through a particular port/vlan.
Policing involves creating a policer that specifies the bandwidth limits for the traffic. Packets that exceed the limits are out of profile or nonconforming. Each policer specifies the action to take for packets that are in or out of profile. These actions, carried out by the marker, include passing through the packet without modification or dropping the packet.
This example shows how to create a policy map and attach it to an ingress interface. In the configuration, the IP standard ACL permits traffic from network 10.1.0.0. For traffic matching this classification, the DSCP value in the incoming packet is trusted. If the matched traffic exceeds an average traffic rate of 48000 bps and a normal burst size of 8000 bytes, its DSCP is dropped:
    Switch(config)# access-list 1 permit 10.1.0.0 0.0.255.255
    Switch(config)# class-map ipclass1
    Switch(config-cmap)# match access-group 1
    Switch(config-cmap)# exit
    Switch(config)# policy-map flow1t
    Switch(config-pmap)# class ipclass1
    Switch(config-pmap-c)# trust dscp
    Switch(config-pmap-c)# police 48000 8000 exceed-action drop
    Switch(config-pmap-c)# exit
    Switch(config-pmap)# exit
    Switch(config)# interface gigabitethernet0/1
    Switch(config-if)# service-policy input flow1t
There is also example on aggregate policing. Here is a link on QoS:
