L355 S7811 working only in Safe Mode

I have a Toshiba L355 S7811 laptop (Vista Home Premium). I've used it for several years now but lately, it will not boot to normal Windows but to Safe Mode with network support. If I try to load it normally, it resets itself but, using Safe Mode it works for hours.
I'd say that if it were a temperature problem it wouldn't work for hours in safe mode, right?
I tried to use the Recovery CDs (2) that came with the laptop and it loads the files but then resets, sometimes it will freeze with garbage on the screen while loading files from the recovery CD #1.  Any suggestions?
If I reformat the HDD, will I still be able to use my Recovery CDs?
Thankyouallverymuch.

If you can reach the recovery environment, use this command at the command prompt.
   bootrec /FixMbr

If you cannot reach WinRE, come back here.

  • Nintendo Wii Remote and Remote Buddy work only in Safe Mode

I'm having trouble with getting Bluetooth to work in normal mode. I can connect to BT devices but the connection is lost within a couple of minutes. In Safe Mode, however, the connection is stable. I am using a Nintendo Wii Remote and Remote Buddy software (both of which are really cool). Also, a Sony Ericsson Z520a phone works well in safe mode but not in normal mode. What can be done to get things working properly?

Here is an update: connecting the iMac G5 with the Wiimote through Bluetooth using the Remote Buddy software works IF I do nothing but connect in normal startup mode. Waiting a few minutes after connecting allows me to then use the Wii as a remote. What is happening!! Please, someone respond. Thanks in advance.

  • Safari works only in safe mode

    MacBook Air 2010
When I update my OS X Lion to 10.7.3  Safari instantly stop working. When I open Safari it don't download any sites, just white screen and a colored round. In the same time WebProcess eat all my processor power. If I fully close safari webprocess still working with 100%. VLC and Skype don't work at all, it just jumping icon in the dock. I try to reinstall OS, but it doesn't help, when I recover OS with Time Machine Safari start working, but when I close it and try to open again I faced with same problem. I can use this apps only in Safe Mode

Sounds like an OS issue. Perhaps doing the same update may help you. Or, perhaps trashing Safari's prefs and re-opening the app would help.

  • My Macbook Pro keeps freezing/crashing after a few seconds of use, but works fine in safe mode.

I've researched this extensively, but I haven't been able to solve my problem yet.
It started completely out of the blue with a kernel panic, where my screen seemed to malfunction and I got the kernel panic message (but I could hardly read it because of distorted graphics). I forced my laptop to shut down, but every time I rebooted and used it again it would completely freeze after a while (the amount of time varied, it has lasted from a few seconds to a couple of hours). What happens essentially is that the cursor and entire OS freezes, and I'm unable to click on anything or use the keyboard. The fans start working full speed and the only thing I can do is force the laptop to shut down.
At first I thought it was a Chrome problem because it only happened after I opened the browser. After uninstalling it, the laptop seemed to work fine for a couple of hours, but then it froze again while I was using Safari. Ever since it has been functioning normally for smaller and smaller time periods before freezing again. I've tried reinstalling Snow Leopard OS from the original disc and then downloading all software updates, but the problem continues. I've also tried doing a hardware test by pressing D as the computer starts up, but for some reason it doesn't work.
The laptop, including Chrome and Safari, works fine in safe mode.
I'm sorry I don't know what specific information to give you about my laptop/OS, but please ask anything you need to know. I'd greatly appreciate any help — I'm panicking because I fly to England tomorrow morning to start university and I really don't want to go without a laptop for 2 weeks while it's getting fixed!

Thanks for your reply! Here are the Etrecheck results.

  • Snow leopard freezes  but works fine in safe mode

I have been using snow leoprad and it hangs after  login to the system (from the first one/two minutes). But it works well in safe mode . So far the things I  have tried are - repair the disk permissions, verify the disk , created a  new user account etc.  But  I'm not getting a soluion. Please help!!

Hmm, that's not good.  Running out of "moving parts".
No third party add ons but works in safe mode only!    Here's the apple article on what happens during a safe boot.
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Since third party stuff is rulled out you would think it would be one of the other things mentioned that may be corrupted.  For example, /System/Library/Fonts, font cache.  In other words, font related.
Not sure what to suggest at the moment and it's my bed time.
Maybe look at OnyX (Maintenance, Rebuild) and rebuild the dyld shared cache and look at other stuff in OnyX that might need rebulding (Cleaning, Fonts, delete font caches).

  • OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.4: imessage works fine in safe mode, but not in "normal" mode. Any hints?

My iMessages does not work in "normal" startup, but it works perfectly in safe mode.
    Any hints?
I have the same problem on a MacBook Pro 17" and on a MacAir 13" mid 2011.
On my MacMini, iMessage work's fine.
I'm using same apple ID on all 3 devices.
Before update to 10.8.4, i had no problems.
FaceTime also stopped working after update to 10.8.4.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • My Macbook Pro won't boot up, only in safe mode!

Help, my macbook pro won't restart, only in safe mode! and it seems that safe mode has plenty of implications for use.  my usb memory stick doesn't seem to be recognized while in safe mode.  I was doing a cleanup on mackeeper just after I downloaded a trial version of microsoft office mac.  The trial wouldn't work properly so I deleted it and decided to do a cleanup with mackeeper.  than the mac froze while mackeeper was doing it's cleanup and the screen flashed black a few times.  Ever since it won't boot up unless I use safe mode.  Also, I downloaded the most recent updates while in safe mode but it doesn't seem to be recognizing that I already downloaded them because software update is still telling me that I have 6 updates.  So I am horribly confused at this point.  Please help, I need this laptop to do report cards (it's a good thing I got an extension). thanks

  • Powerbook G4 will not boot normally, only in safe mode.

So...about a month ago I updated my powerbook with all the updates that were available, one of the updates was 10.5.8. I came back after the update had run for a while, and found my computer with a black screen, and a faint white bar towards the bottom of the screen. The computer wouldn't respond, and I was forced to do a manual shutdown. The computer would then not boot, instead finally resting on a light blue screen with an active mouse pointer after passing the gray apple screen.
In safe mode, I downloaded and installed the combo 10.5.8 update, but it made no difference.
I assumed it to obviously be a software issue, and so I backed up my info, and reinstalled Leopard. I then updated to 10.5.8 using the combo update. My computer functioned normally for about a week, and then froze, mouse responsive, but nothing else. After manual shutdown, same problem, computer started to blue screen with pointer.
Since that time I've reset the PRAM, run disk utility a million times (no errors), repaired permissions, all to no avail. I've run the Techtool diagnostics on it, and it found no hardware failures. The computer will not boot from an external hard drive, ruling out the HD.
I've replaced the RAM with different RAM, again will not boot. The computer boots without fail every time in safe mode.
History on my computer, one of my memory slots failed to recognize memory any longer, and my logic board was replaced a little less than 2 years ago while I still had applecare.
    So to sum up:
Powerbook boots only in safe mode
Stays at blue screen with mouse pointer when booting
May work properly for a few days after erase and install of OS, but then fails again with same systems shortly thereafter
    Any ideas???

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test from DVD?

  • IMac 24" boots only in Safe mode

iMac Intel 24" aluminum 3.06 processor, Graphics NVIDIA 8800 GS,from June 2008. Mac OS 10.6.7
It started a few days ago by flickering the upper part of the screen(horizontal strips) during normal use. After reboot the problem reappeared. Ata certain moment the computer would not restart, it hangs at gray screen, butthe hard drive turns and eventually other computers in a wireless networkrecognize the printer connected to the computer.
I tried all usual tricks (starting from DVD or external drive, safemode, single mode, resetting PRAM, unplugging the power cord etc.).
The computer starts only in safe mode, the gray screen becomes blue andthen normal desktop picture. Only some pictures and YouTube videos are not showing up. Safari works only with a single tab, however Firefox opens nearlyall pages.
I took the machine to an Apple shop for repairing. After 11 days theycalled me and said the video card is damaged and should be replaced (some $800). I do not have Applecare and I have to pay the costs. Before agreeing toreplace the video card I would like to know what is the origin of the problem
I wonder why the video card failed. Is it possible that another element(power supply or overheating) has caused the damage to the card? If the videocard is damaged why is it able to handle graphics when the computer is startingin safe mode?

    Thank you very much.
In fact it is interesting to know if a video card can be partially dead. If it works (at least partially) at safe mode that means some components of the hardware are still alive. It seems that at starting in normal mode it tries to access something for activating the graphics and it cannot. Are there extra components activated at normal startup, which are not done at safe mode?
I unplugged the computer without holding the power button (At Apple store they didn’t tell me to hold the power button for 10 seconds after unplugging to reset SMC) - also Apple doesn’t suggest to hold the power button, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
I restarted the computer after resetting SMC and it started normally, but after nearly 24 hours the top of the display began to flicker followed by total freeze. After that it couldn't boot in normal mode. It hangs at startup with gray screen. Only in safe mode it can boot.

Boots fine till we hit the log on screen then monitor goes black with no signal.
Can boot to safe mode fine. Removed drivers, ran driver cleaner, rebooted to safe mode and ran driver cleaner again.
Booted to safe mode again to install driver package to same result in normal windows (blank screen)
Wondering if card may be faulty as the screen does not look quite right when booting using only windows native drivers. I can pull an identical card from rig in sig to test. Just looking for suggestions here.

hit "F8" after bios post, and choise "Enable VGA Mode". boot normally and setup correct refresh rates.
check dual view & TV out settings too.
I had tried that once and resolution was VERY low and only 4 colors. Just 2 options each to change and the slider and drop down menu would not except the change and or move. Windows tried to adjust on it's own and the screen had a greenish tint to it. Still looked better in safe mode and booting normally was OK except for low res and color.(Still greenish)
I'm gonna swap the card out tomorrow morning

  • Boots only in Safe Mode - Macbook mid 2007

My Macbook mid 2007 with Snow Leopard will not boot correctly. The only successful means is Safe Mode (key S during boot).
All measures published in various postings have been conducted without any peripheral devices. These are:
    verify harddisc
    verify RAM
    resetting PRAM and NVRAM
A detailled overview can be found under here.
The existing original RAM and harddisc were successfully tested using a second identical Macbook. A new installation of Snow Leopard on the harddisc using the second Macbook was successful and started in this second Macbook as expected. This harddisc was then inserted into my Macbook, but it would not boot. Hence it is safe to exclude problems with RAM and the harddisc.
Attempts to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD (either via C plus boot or Option during boot and select Install DVD) are not successful. Attempts to boot from an external drive are also not successful. The boot process (regular, DVD, external) progresses to different states including grey screen with Apple and frozen wheel. There is no consistency.
From the various postings I have found and studied along with my numerous tests, I have deduced the following possibilities:
There is a problem with the GPU.
There is a problem with the keyboard (maybe someone spilled something).
I have found numerous solutions for "boots only in Safe Mode". All include booting via Install DVD, but this does not work in my case.
I have exhausted all my possibilities. Hopefully someone can provide more insight.

    lruetimann wrote:
What I am not able to test is booting with an external CD/DVD drive. However, there is no indication that the built-in drive is malfunctioning.
If you have a second MacBook (#2 working OK), you could use its CD/DVD drive loaded with the 10.6 DVD as the target disk to boot into, as the first Macbook (#1 the troubled one) reportedly cannot see a 10.6 DVD normally.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
In your case this would be:
With the MacBook(1) on (Host), the MacBook(2) off (Target) connect the firewire cable.
Start the MacBook(2), hold T key to make it the boot drive. It will appear on the MacBook's(1) Desktop.
Insert the 10.6 Install DVD into the MacBook(2).
It too will appear on the MacBook's(1) Desktop.
From the MacBook(1), select Restart and hold down the Option key to select Start-up Manager.
From Start-up Manager, select the 10.6 Install DVD which will take you into the installation.
If this occurs, then you have booted into the install 10.6 DVD, From there you could try and install it, see what happens.
However, if it does not see the DVD disk, then this would indicate a defect in the logicboard (motherboard), though which component I would not guess.
If it does see the DVD, in Macbook (2) and can boot into it,… I'd be surprised!

  • Mac suddenly won't open some websites, only on safe mode

    Hi I need some help
Mac  stop showing  some websites  in my particular case  (www.globo.com) . I'm trying for almost  5 days and nothing. Just today by morning  the website enters but for few moments after the connections with thw websites don't  work.  The only way  to works s in safe mode. I don't know what to do to solve this.Don't know  if i have to change  DNS or not , because other device in my network works fine, but the mac don't.

Similar thing here.. I updated my mac mini to Yosemite 10.10.3 a few weeks ago, ever since certain websites won't open on the devices that are connected through my shared internet from the mini (iPad, iPhone and Samsung mobile). Although those same sites open on the mini itself..

  • When I move a mouse through a page it starts blinking like crazy; however, it works fine in safe mode.

This is happening on my Alienware M11x laptop. I do not know if the switchable graphics is affecting this, but I have tried integrated and discrete graphics and the same problem exists.

As it works fine in safe mode it indicates an extension/theme as the likely cause. Follow the procedure in the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.
You can also try disabling hardware acceleration to see if that is related. In the [[Options window - Advanced panel]], on the General tab, deselect the option to "Use hardware acceleration when available". You will need to restart Firefox after changing this setting for it to take effect.

  • IMac freeze after startup, works fine in safe mode

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.
    Thanks,

  • IMac works fine in safe mode, extremely slow in normal mode

    Hey guys, I'm going nuts!
My mac got stuck on a white screen, I ended up reinstalling Snow Leopard - now when I boot in normal mode everything is extrememly slow - when I mouse over the corner of a window (close minimise etc) is stops and takes about 10 seconds to make the rollover affect (putting the "x" in the red circle). When I move the mouse over anything on the desktop, it stops working for about 10 seconds as well. The mouse moves around the screen fine, and after a lot of painful (and very patient) clicking, I can transfer files around fine - happens just as fast as it would normally, windows open as normal etc.
The most frustrating part is - everything works fine is safe mode! I'm typing this message on the mac now... I was thinking that I could transfer all of my data on to an external drive, but safe mode won't recognise them it took me about 10 minutes to select a folder and copy it to a hard drive in normal mode - I can't drag over a few items because of the mouse problem...
I have updated my software - can't open the app store for some reason (I want to upgrade to Lion as well). No idea what to do...

One of the primary difference between a safe boot and a normal boot is that all third party software is prevented from starting in the safe boot. So it sounds like something you installed on your Mac is causing the problems.
Are you running any kind of AV software?
If you are I would suggest that you start by unsintalling it. There are no virus on the Mac for the AV software to find any way so all it ever does is cause problems.
