L420 Several number keys on keyboard not working (except 5 and 6)

Hi there,
I am having some troubles with the keyboard of my L420. All the numbers (except 5 and 6) and F9 to F12, Insert and Delete are not working.
I found several threads with people describing the same problem (all numbers except 5 and 6 not working) but no solutions yet.
I have tried a System Restore, uninstall the keyboard, and an external keyboard. The numbers do not work neither when running Ubuntu nor in BIOS.
The problem first occured when I woke my laptop from Sleep and tried to enter my password. After using the onscreen keyboard, I was able to login and the numbers worked again. Then after restarting, the numbers stopped working even in Windows running.
I would appreciate any help on this problem. Can someone exclude that it is a hardware problem because 5 and 6 are working? I did not spill anyng on or damage the keyboard.

Use the Keyboard Viewer to test whether the keyboard keys are responding correctly when they are pressed.
1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Language & Text from the View menu (or International from the View menu in Mac OS X v10.5 or earlier).
2. Select Input Sources.
3. Select the Keyboard & Character Viewer checkbox.
4. Enable the input source for the keyboard layout you are testing by selecting the checkbox next to it.
5. Make sure that "Show Input menu in menu bar" is enabled.
6. Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu in the menu bar, as shown.
7. The Keyboard Viewer shows the keyboard layout.
8. Type the key on the keyboard that doesn’t respond and observe whether the corresponding key highlights on the Keyboard Viewer. If it does, that particular key is functioning correctly. In the sample shown above the shift and command keys are being pressed.
9. If the mouse keys feature in the Universal Access System Preferences pane is enabled, many of the keyboard keys may not respond as expected.
10. Try starting up into single user mode to determine whether a software issue is causing the issue.

  • Keys on keyboard not working.

    Greetings all, we are having trouble with several keys on our keyboard not working. First it started with the ENTER (non numpad) key not working, shortly followed by the TAB and CAPS LOCK key.
    Any clues as to what caused this and how to fix it? It's the keyboard that came with the iMac. I've already tried unplugging it and plugging it back in.

    Welcome to MSDN forums.
    First,please make sure the Chrome and Firefox is supported by cross browser testing.
    Latest version of Chrome and Firefox supported by cross browser testing are Chrome version 38.0.2125.111 and
    Firefox 33.
    I doubt whether Chrome and Firefox in cross browser testing don’t support automating modifier keys or there is anything wrong on it if you are using supported browser. Since this issue is related to the Extensions tool
    Selenium components for Coded UI Cross Browser Testing, if possible, I suggest you post this
    issue here, click “Q AND A”, and then you could post this issue there, you would get dedicated
    support there.

  • Number keys on keyboard dont work

    The 1 to 9 keys on the top part of my keyboard stopped working.The     `   0   -   =   keys all work fine.   It is a wireless keyboard (model no. A1314) without a number pad on the side.  Nothing has been spilled on it.  I have tried it on another Mac and it does not work there either.

    That would indicate that the fault is within the keyboard itself, and is not a software issue, meaning there is no setting or instruction through the OS which can fix it.
    You will probably need to replace the keyboard.
    If the computer is still under warranty, and the keyboard is the original, it should also be covered. If you have AppleCare on that machine, that may cover its replacement.

    I´ve pushed lots of buttons at the same time on accident. and now for some reason, some keys are not responding. I´m pretty sure it´s not broken cause i didn´t push it hard, just a normal push.

    1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 keys on the right side of the keyboard are not working. (258 working fine)
    it´s pretty strange because when i pushed a lot of buttons it weren´t those buttons on the right side of the keyboard. i didn´t even touch them.
    So i think i did an keycombination on accident or something. It also has nothing to do with the language of the keyboard cause that´s all fine.
    I´ve tried the keyboard on my macbook, mac pro and even a windows pc. it does the same thing on all 3 computers.
    It´s an apple wired usb keyboard.
    Does anyone know a solution?

    I can understand your frustration.  But there is no way any key combo you might have done would affect more than one computer.  I suggest you take it to an Apple store or other shop for them to test.

  • Z key on keyboard not working

    Recently cleaned my keyboard with a multi-surface cleaner and cloth (which I now realise was a bad idea). Initially the Z key would stick, but now the Z key doesn't work at all. To resolve this I have flipped the key off and cleaned thoroughly with 99.7% pure Isopropanol. I have also done the obvious disconnect/reconnect the keyboard, powered the Mac off and back on.
    It's a Mac Bluetooth keyboard, and I know I could but a new one for £40-50 on eBay but I wondered if anyone had any other suggestions, or if anyone knows if Apple offer a keyboard repair service (my apple care product expired on 28th Feb and they want to charge me £25 just to ask that question).
    Any help would be appreciated.

    If this is a self administered problem, your Apple care would not have covered you any way.   Apple specifically advise you not to clean the keyboard with a liquid.   I do understand why you did what you did but it seems to me that the initial problem was caused by the multi surface cleaner, whatever that was.   I guess it could have been a small piece of grit initially.
    Apple do not have any kind of exchange arrangements or a keyboard repair service unless you were able to take it to an authorised Apple dealer, where they would certainly look at it.
    Sorry to seem so negative but the rule is Electronics and Liquids do not happily live together.

  • Keyboard not working at boot and CD won't boot

    Hello everyone,
    I think I have a very particular issue that hasn't happened to many people since I could not find any topics talking about this already. Before I begin, let me excuse myself for my bad english writing.. it ain't my primary language.
    Ok so I was already running Mac OS X 10.5 and decided to try bootcamp so I could use Autocad in Windows XP. What I did is start the bootcamp assistant and install Windows XP. After the installation my computer was booting with that "Disk error" message.
    Ok no worries, I had all my files backed up on my external hard drive but for some very weird reason, my original Mac OS X Leopard DVD would not boot anymore and it was still saying "Disk error". I decided to try holding "C" at startup to boot from the DVD but it would not work. I can hear the DVD working but it's still not booting from it.
    I thought my DVD was defect so I try booting up from my Windows CD and when it asked me to "press any key to boot from CD" i realized that my keyboard was not working during startup. Any startup key like "C", ALT, Command or any other keys were not working. Even the light on the capslock key would not work when i pressed the key.
    I had an old Knoppix Live CD which is a Linux and that booted fine. When that boots it asks me to press a key to boot or to wait 2 minutes and it will boot on it's own. I couldn't press a key to boot so I waited 2 minutes and my keyboard started working when the Linux OS was booted. I managed to erase the partition table of my harddrive to start from scratch but my Mac OS DVD would not boot either way and my keyboard is still not working at boot (in the gray screen where you can actually use startup shortcuts normally).
    I also tried to boot with my old Mac OS 10.4 DVD and I had the same results.
    Before you ask, yes I tried another USB keyboard, I also tried all 3 USB ports. The only thing that works at boot is when I hold the mouse button to eject my CD/DVD. But all my keyboard shortcuts doesn't work and I can boot from any installation CD (windows, linux) but not Mac OS 10.4 or 10.5.

    Okay so I managed to fix this problem with another apple keyboard, the mac os installation would still not boot but at least I was able to press N to boot from network and start a Mac OS from the network. From there I could insert the Mac OS installation disc and start the installation from there and now everything works fine. Thanks to everyone for your help.

    I have looked on multiple different forums and websites to find a solution to my problem but havnt been successful yet. About a month ago the following keys stopped working:leftright arrowdeletepg downpg upend insert I am running vista and have not made any changes that I can think of that would cause this problem. I have tried the following:running the computter in safe mode to see if the keys work - unsuccessfulusing the onscreen keyboard - all of the keys workIf anyone has a solution please let me know.   • Help! Keys on keyboard not working!

    A few days ago I spilled hot wax onto the keyboard of my macbook. I wiped it off as best I could, and everything was working fine! however, yesterday my "t" and "f" keys stopped working, and now other ones are stopping to. I am able to get them to work by pulling off the keys and wiggling the rubber pusher a bit, which fixes it for a while. They also seem to work as long as I hold down on the key for a bit or try pushing it in different places. This is obviously annoying, and I am wondering how i might (cheaply) fix this?

    Contact Apple using expresslane.apple.com if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

  • Can't sign in because many keys on keyboard not working

    Am able to enter first four letters of my password but when i type the fifth = nothing happens.  Nothing happens with the keys starting with Q and ending with O.
    (P works) None of the numbers except 0 work..

    A harmless bit of voodoo to try is
    Resetting NVRAM
    and
    Resetting the System Management Controller
    But, chances are, your keyboard or related electronics is broken and needs to be taken in for repair.

    Hi,
    can you be more explicit in explaining what you want to achieve and what is not working? You mean that the tab menus are not getting in focus using the tab key? Have you tried setting clientComponent=true on them?

    Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
    This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

    It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
    If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

  • Some keys on my pavilion dv7 notebook keyboard not working

    For a while now my backspace key and a host of other keys distributed across the keyboard, some on the main alphanumeric key area and others on the numeric key area, are not working. Even after reinstalling windows it's still the same. I tried removing the battery, pressing the power button for about 15seconds then replacing the battery cuz I heard it would reset the motherboard, but nothing changed. Please what else can I try.

    Next step is to replace the keyboard. Keyboards tend not to be very expensive and replacement on your model is not too difficult. If you want to try it we need to know the country you live in to find the part.
