L430 multiple driver problems (ultranav and others)

Hello,
I have multiple driver problems with my newly purchased L430.
1) After hibernate the UltraNav driver randomly stops working. This means that the settings are grayed out and my old settings aren't applied. Sometimes the mouse pad and track ball also stop working after hibernate.
2) The hardware mute button and hibernate don't like each other as well. After resuming from hibernate with the mute button on the sound doesn't work anymore. Rebooting only helps if you have disabled the mute before rebooting.
3) The intel usb 3.0 driver can't be installed unless you want a lot of bluescreens.
I do have the newest drivers and BIOS (2.54).

It's ok my friend,  I just hope I will be able to help.
Now to the problem. The thing that worries me the most and the reason I asked you to contact a Lenovo Repair Center, is the blue screens with the Intel Usb 3.0 installation. If the driver is correct this should not happen and most of the times it signifies a pure hardware problem, not a software one. Really, it just should not happen, period!
So please, before anything else, download and boot with a Linux Live cd, any distro you like (e.g. Linux Mint, Fedora, etc). Better choose a 64bit version. It's one way of determining if you're facing a hardware problem with the usb 3.0 ports.
The information you give is very useful and more or less complete, but I would like to also know the model of your SSDs, both the 2.5'' and msata.
Meanwhile, you can check either with the Linux Live cd or with Memtest86+ your ram. This does not seem to be a memory problem but it would be nice if we could exclude it from the suspects list. Many - if not most - of these problems are multifactorial and we cannot leave anything to chance..
Cheers!

  • Partion drive with TM and other data already on it

    hi folks
I'd like to partion an ext. FW drive with TM and other data (music files) already on it. can this be done w/o erasing the data already on the ext. drive?
    Thanks,
    Chuck s

thanks V.K. So, this process will not erase my data?
If I already have, as I mentioned, my iTunes music and Time Machine data on this ext. FW drive, can I place the data in each new partition?
that's right, the data should be preserved. it will remain on one partition and a new empty partition will be created below it. you can move your Music library to the new partition. DO NOT move your TM backups. they can not be moved using Finder.

  • Brutalizing my Hard Drive... and other problems

I just got an iBook G4 a month ago, and I am first trying to edit a movie now. I can't buy Final Cut pro, and I don't feel like I should have to based on the kind of movies I would like to make. But I have the following problems:
    1) I would like to be able to import video at a lower resolution or something that would make my project take up less space... my internal HD is only 40GB and my external is 80, and small amounts of video take up huge amounts of space. And as someone noted, trashing these clips seems to do nothing. Which is very frustrating. I do not see the reason for "non-destructive" editing.
    2) I don't know how to make the project originate on an External HD. Is this because it is USB? On my old (windows) computer I could use USB to import from the camera at a lower resolution, and now with only the firewire option and apparently no way to downgrade how much space the file takes up, putting it on the external drive would be a great help.
    3) I have used final cut, and it actually seemed easier to do things such as trim the length of a clip at either end, slow it down, speed it up, reverse it, and more. I do not see any intuitive options to do these things (other than awkwardly clicking on the ends of the clip in the timeline to shorten it... but why can't I work with the clip alone?) , and I feel stupid. But the help option has nothing on it either. iMovie must have these capabilities, yes?
I am sorry for the long post, but I am frustrated. I find this to be the opposite of GarageBand, which was so intuitive I could mave music even though I had no goal in mind. I know exactly how I would like my simple movie to go, and I feel that the software is standing in the way. Would iMovie 4 be better? How do I downgrade?
    Thanks.

I'm presently working on a wedding video, to go onto a DVD ..a bit more than 20 mins! ..And also on a video of some people doing Qi Gong (Chi Gung ..however you pronounce it ..you know: slow-moving oriental exercises) and both of those DVDs will need Chapters ..guests arriving; wedding ceremony; reception; speeches; dancing; people falling over and being ill ..we-e-ell; you know.. and the other has Chapters for each of the different exercises (..twisting left and hurting your back, touching your toes and getting cramps, swinging arms above head and smashing the lampshade, etc).
So I often make movies ..and DVDs.. which are longer than 20 mins ..though the last one was only 9mins or so, but that was a copy of some old VHS tape from 20 years ago for a cousin who's getting married next(?) week.
Chapters let you jump (..forward or back..) to a particular element of the video/DVD which you want to play again, without having to negotiate menus.
And other videos - of the eclipse, etc - often last 35 mins or more.
Over the years I recorded (..or shot on 8mm!..) a bit of what was happening with friends in Cornwall almost every time I visited them. This now amounts to 3hrs worth or so. Put onto a DVD - or two! - they can jump between chapters to see their daughter the day she was born; then the same girl aged three; then the same girl getting married, etc!
So I make long-ish video with iMovie, add Chapters for ease of navigation, then burn onto long-ish DVDs.

  • IMovie 11 - projects on multiple drives problem

My set-up:  2007 Mac Pro, boot drive is an SSD; drive 2 is all my data (folders for Music, Movies, Documents, Photos); drive 3 is a back-up drive of drive 2; drive 4 is a back-up of the boot drive.
Since the boot drive is an SSD, it has limited capacity, so I followed the instructions on this site to move projects from the boot drive movies folder to a new folder I created on Drive 2.  On Drive 2, I have them in movies-->imovie projects.  Everything was fine.  In iMovie, when I looked at the drives under projects, I had expansion triangles next to the boot drive (which contains one small project) and Drive 2, where the other projects are.
I have all the iMovie updates, and today, there is no triangle next to Drive 2.  In finder, I see all of the projects in Drive 2, but I cannot choose them from iMovie.  If I double-click in finder on a project, it does not open in iMovie.
How do I choose a project on Drive 2 from iMovie?  I see the Drive 2 in iMovie, but the expansion triangle is missing.
    Thanks....

May be You could see if there is any help in this list (on this wild gose hunt)
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error fre one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated imovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • TS1538 I have an iPod Touch IOS 4.2.1 that Windows 7 home premium can't see.  Says there's a driver problem.  My other one with IOS 5.1.1 works on the same cable and computer. I don't know where to go.

I have an iPod Touch with 4.2.1 that won't connect to my Windows 7 Home Premium laptop.  It gives a "USB Device Not Recognized" error when I plug it in to a USB port.  My wife's (newer) iPod Touch with IOS 5.1.1 works just fine with no errors.  I'm using the same port - I just moved the cable from one iPod to the other. I've tried the various different drivers using Update Drivers.  I let it search the internet and it says "The best driver software is already installed", but the device shows as "Unknown Device".  I did the browse my computer, unchecked the "Show compatible hardware", and selected Apple, Inc..  There were two Apple iPod USB Drivers.  One was 6.0.9999.53 and the other was 6.0.9999.61.  Neither of these works.  I'm thinking that the maybe I need to upgrade the iPod touch software version - but I don't know how to get to it.  Can this be loaded over WiFi?  Any other ideas?

    Does the iPod work OK?
Does it charge when connect to the computer?
Does it appear in My Computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Compare with the iPod that does work/connect.
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1

    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • Need advise about using NAS drive for TM and other storage

I have 2 macs. One is running Snow Leopard and has a FW 400 drive connected directly to it for TM backups. I have another older mac (G5 PPC) running Tiger and I plan to update to Leopard so I can also do TM backups for it.
So, I'm thinking of getting the following NAS enclosure, adding a 2TB drive to it, so I can do TM backups on the old mac (and maybe switch the other mac to use it too).
    The questions I have are:
    1. is it fast enough to do it over the network, compared to the direct FW 400 connection?
    2. Can I partition the new NAS 2TB in half and move the TM backup folder over there and then tell my new mac that it needs to do the TM backup there?
That's all I have for now. Hope someone can help.
    Thank You!

That does not appear to be compatible with Time Machine.

  • I have seen this problem here and other forums but I need some clarity.

    Hey-
(Sorry for the quick post, but I wanted to get this out there before I take off across the country so I might have some help when I am in NY by some help on here.)
I purchased my first iPod this past Christmas. it was the iPod Nano 6 gen. I did a ton of research, read many post on various forums, and all the negative comments (except one) I felt I could live without, because I had not gotten use to any configuration of the Nano and the complaints seemed to not affect needing the Nano for exercising.
The main problem with not being able to turn the Nano off or at least get it to a state where very little power was used seemed to be what was causing so much strife among new users. I thought I would read the posts, do some research, read the little manual that came with the Nano and the larger manual online at apple.com and figure out how Apple meant for this machine to be "turned off."
I charged the pup up when I got it, changed my earphones to the new in the earphones and headed off to the gym. Since I had already done a considerable amount of research and played around with it to become familiar with the buttons and all before I it the gym, I felt I was OK to go for a workout. Since this was my very firs iPod, I had some challenges in synching the machine wit iTunes. I think I just need to understand the whole synch process ad probably do it manually. I turned the machine on when I got to the gym, got some tunes playing and hit the sleep/wake button so it would be a dark screen and save as much power as possible. I was actually shocked at how much power was used during the hour workout, especially since I did not play wit it at all during the workout.
After the workout, I had learned from some people who were a bit more patient with finding oiut the best way to get the machine to use the least amount of power until their next use of the Nano. so, I turned the volume all the way down, paused the music that was playing, removed the earphones from the jack, and pressed the sleep/wake button in hopes I would have some power the next time I went to use it, which was the next day. That first workout it used about ½ of the battery icon and when I went to turn it on the next day for another workout I was shocked to see ¼ of the battery still charged.
so, my questions or the main question is, despite all of my research on how the company meant for this machine to be put to sleep in-between uses, despite what I mentioned above what I did, is there any latest new from Apple out about why the battery hold such a crappy charge? Even following what the major Nano manual stated and even Applecare, the battery energy loss between one day was a shocker. I have read where people have not experienced this problem, but my question is does anybody know how Apple recommends that one leave the Nano when it is not in use? I understand it goes into a deep sleep after something like 36 hours, which seems insane to pick 36 hours. Also, if anybody has been able to figure out how Apple has built this machine to be put to sleep, I would really appreciate some help here.
I have heard from many people that they can't have the Nano go to an off position because of the clock but come-on, there are many other tech devices that have a clock and are able to be put to sleep. You can still make a device to be put to sleep and still get the little energy it needs to keep the battery charged.
any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Let me recap on what I have learned from my research to do when not in use to keep as much energy as possible. First, make sure the volume is all the way down by the sound "waves" are not coming out of the display speaker make sure whatever is playing is on pause, make sue the pedometer is off, unplug the earphones, press the sleep/wake bottom and your good to go until you use it next. However this does not keep my battery from drawing a significant amount of power so that I have a decent amount of power for the next workout. I can't believe this is such an issue when the earlier Nanos had much more uses and must have needed much more power to even keep things working during the Sleep time.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you on a dialup connection, using Web acceleration software?
If so, try disabling the web accelerator. Does the download go through for you properly then?

  • Import problems iPhoto and other Photo software

    Hi there,
I am a new MacBook Pro owner with Leopard 10.5.1 and iLife 08. Absolutely impressed by the system, but a bit disappointed that importing JPEG formatted photos from files sometimes results in garbled photos in iPhoto and Aperture, even though the originals are simply fine. Tried to used other software like GIMP, but the issue remains.
Is this a known Mac OS X problem? If so, does anyone have a solution for it?
I would be eternally grateful for any help I can get on the issue.
    Lucien

    Hi Terence,
Thanks for answering. The photos have all been stored on my FAT32 formatted external USB 2.0 harddrive that I used with my old XP system. And the majority was taken with a variety of digital cameras (Toshiba, HP and Sony) and some were scanned in with a HP flatbed scanner.
I do not know how to check the color profile of the photos on the Apple system (I am still a newbie) and I did not look at them yet on my old XP system (but I will, but I am not near the system at the moment).
Would the color profile have anything to do with the problem?
    Thanks for your answer!

  • External Drive Time Machine and other files

I want to use an external drive for time machine and storing other files.  Does time machine need the external drive exclusively or can one also put other files on the drive?

A backup strategy is one of individual choice.  By having more than on HDD for your data, you are distributing the risk
I have 5 external HDDs.  One is dedicated to Time Machine, the others have data that simply takes up too much room on the internal drive in the MBP (mostly video).  Some of the data that I have on these HDDs is redundant copies of what I have on the MBP and in Time Machine.  This is data that is important to me.  This may seem excessive but I would argue not.
Ex: my iTunes is on the internal HHD, Time Machine and also on my secondary MBP (and the iPod).  That for me is important an I do not want to lose it.
I have seen too many instances on this forum where individuals have lost data without adequate backups looking for answers on how to retrieve that information only to be disappointed.  Please don't let that happen to you.  Given enough time, ALL HDDs will fail!
    Ciao.

  • Multiple external drive problems, both USB and Esata

Everything worked well in Tiger on my first gen MBP. Since i switched to Leopard and now Snow, and a new UNI MBP in december 08 I have so many external drive issues.
USB drives just disappear and power off (from the system not electrical) for no reason, mostly when connected to USB hubs. I've tried various hubs including the powered ones. But as soon as i go over two USB devices in the provided ports my problems start.. It feels like not enough juice is getting through those ports on my MBP. I never have a problem if i just connect 2 devices into the MBP, but it's not enough (i have 5x1tb external drives).
Also the same with the express34 slot.. Everything was fine under Tiger and my old MBP, But now i get the grey wall of death so many times when connecting 2x esata 1TB drives. The system is so unstable with multiple drives both USB and. I'm currently working as a pro Photographer on assignment in Asia and these stability are starting to become a big problem.
God forbid i'm even considering a switch back to windows for reliability, (yes, i did use the words windows and reliability in the same sentence)
Does anybody else experience problems with multiple drives through leopard/snow leopard via Apple notebooks? I would love to hear some users experiences and hopefully find a solution to my problem.. In every other way the system works like a charm.
I will post in 2 forums because i'm not sure if software or hardware related.
    Thanks, any help is appreciated.

    @ Gregory
All my drives are 3.5" HD's all with external power cables along with a mains powered USB hub. Sorry, i didn't state that clearly in the original post (i thought the hint of all drives being 1TB was a dead giveaway:)).. However, this still doesn't explain the same behaviour of the 2x1TB esata drives which actually work well if no external USB drives are connected. Sorry i'm not technical but does the expresscard slot share any bridge, bus or power connectivity with the USB slots??
I'll try this SMC reset that S.U mentioned...
Thanks for everyones help and ideas so far.

  • How many watts/amps is SD-R2412 and other toshiba slimline drives ?

How many watts/amps is this CD/DVD drive - SD-R2412 , and other toshiba slimline drives ?
i'm not quite sure which forum to post that question in.
I did find this link on the american toshiba site (or maybe from googling with site:toshiba.com)
    http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=HardDrivesOpticalDrives/CDCombination/SD-R2412/SD-R2412Specifications
But it doesn't say how many Amps is on the 5V line. If I knew that, i'd know how many watts. I'm interested in that.
    And also for others.

Not a problem, I bought it now, and it won't be too many watts anyway, that was just my curiousity.
    But just for your curiousity
i'm using a low watt power supply (small, noiseless). One model is 120W but a cheaper one is 60W.
fact is, a slim Cd drive will be fine. But still, since i've got a low watt psu, i'd like to know how many watts things are using. So if I wanted to plug in a regular hard drive, i'd know whether or not there's enough watts spare.
I have a device from maplin to measure. it's fine for when i buy the drive!
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=38343&doy=6m9&C=SO&U=strat15
"plug-in mains power and electricity monitor"
You can't stick so strongly to the label on the drive. For example..
Although I've found that CD drives are labelled as effectively 30W but use 25W at their max.
I've found that hard drives use far more than their label says!
One hard drive labelled as effecitvely 7W, used about 18W at one point.
And another labelled as effectively 13W used 27W at one point.
When I say ' labelled as effectively '.. I mean it says how many amps on each rail e.g. [email protected] [email protected], and I figure out the watts by multiplying and adding. P=IV (power = current * voltage). power measured in watts, current in amps, voltage in volts.
