L505-ES5018 Sound is terrible

I recently purchased this laptop because I've always had good luck with Toshiba.
However after a few weeks, I am unhappy with using this laptop.
The sound on the L505-ES5018  is  terrible.
I would have to turn the speakers all the way up to hear a video or movie or even music.
It sounds like I'm listening to it on AM radio from the 1970s.
I'm so unhappy I'm unsure of what to do with this laptop as it doesn't seem the sound will get any better.
Is this a call to tech support or is this what they are selling for (or I should say what I bought) $500+ which I feel I've been duped.
Thanks.
Chris

I made two phone calls tonight regarding the sound on this laptop.
First call was a man (he never gave me his name).
Went through reinstalling the drivers and fixing the settings.
Still a tinny sound that sounds like I'm listening to audio clips on my windows 3.1 computer without a sound card.
The call ended with him telling me "If you are unhappy with the sounds then buy external speakers."
The phone then disconnected - don't know if he released the call or if it just "disconnected."
What is the point of a laptop if I have to carry around external speakers?
Called back again and got Karen.
I was told the same thing - You will either have to buy external speakers or use headphones.
Are you kidding me? What kind of company states this to a customer who spent over $500 (may not be a lot to them but it is to me) for a piece of equipment that's portable to buy and carry around external speakers?
So what's the point of the speakers in the laptop? To make it seem like I'm back in 1993 listending to my audio clips on window 3.1's internal speaker?
So thank you Toshiba - I'm out $500+ and very unhappy with the POS I bought  a month ago and cannot comfortably listen to anything on it.    I'll be sure to tell others what type of tech support you have and that your laptops are not consistent in quality even thought you are paying more for it than others.

  • Low audio on L505-ES5018

I can hardly hear the external speaker output on my brand new Toshiba L505-ES5018. All volume controlls appear to be up but it's still very low. Headphone volume seems to be fine.

Here is one suggested fix that works for many of us who experience the low sound issues on laptops which use the Realtek HD Audio drivers. These directions are for Windows 7, other operating systems may require a slightly different set of steps.
First, Download and install the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers from the Realtek website. If the ".exe" or executable file version of the Realtek HD audio driver is downloaded, this file may need to be run twice (run installer, reboot computer, run the installer a second time, then reboot the computer a second time) to properly install the audio driver.
Second, once the audio drivers have been updated, enable "Loudness Equalization" on either the Start --> Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Realtek HD Audio Manager --> Sound Effects tab, then click OK to save the setting change. Or on the Start --> Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Sound --> Speaker Properties (select Speakers then the Properties button) --> Enhancements tab, scroll down the list of sound effects to enable "Loudness Equalization" then select the OK button to save the setting changes.
Once the Realtek drivers have been updated and the "Loudness Equalization" has been enabled the system sound audio level is much louder, however the DVD and Audio CD audio levels might continue to be low for some users. Some find that setting the Equalizer, found under the Realtek HD Audio Manager Sound Effects tab or on the Speaker Enhancement tab, to "Powerful" seems to help with the sound levels.

  • Trouble with reinstall of Win7 64 on a L505-ES5018

    Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5018, Win 7 64:
Hard drive crased so I installed a new one and ordered the recovery disks for L500 series and installed. Some drivers are unsigned and WIndows Update nor the Windows Troubleshooter will work. Win Update says it is not running and I should restart my computer. I checked services and it is started and set to Automatic (Delayed Start). I changed this to Automatic and restarted but same issue. I reinstalled again with the same issues. Any thoughts?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The most recent Intel RST driver is what finally made everything work for me. It is not listed on this model's downloads page nor does it update from windows update. This is the link to the exact driver I installed. Let me know if it helps!
Install the updated Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver:
    http://downloadmirror.intel.com/19607/eng/iata_enu.exe
After I installed this driver, all of my certificate issues went away and Windows update began to work. Certain drivers still appeared to be unsigned, but deleting them and reinstalling them from this model's downloads page seemed to work fine.
If this doesn't work right off the bat, in my troubleshooting rhythem I decided to change the logical cluster size to 512 bytes using Acronis Disk Director right after the Toshiba recovery program finished and before I let it boot for the first time. This may not be necessary but when you have a customer that really wants her computer back, you will try everything to get it working the first time. Hope my post helps!

Are you talking about the 32- or 64-bit IE8?  In any case, I'd advise you to stick with the 32-bit one. Many add-ins are not yet available for the latter.
Most problems get solved with a reset.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Audio Output sound quality terrible after Lion upgrade

    Hi guys,
I have recently upgraded my 2011 MBP 13 to Lion, and ever since have had terrible audio out sound quality, i.e. it is 'grainy' and full of feedback - very unpleasant to listen to.
Is anyone else in the same boat and does anyone have the solution to my problem?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Sorry for the late reply, yes mine does does recover but I still think it is the same issue with different levels of severity.  This is a guess but possibly my higher spec Retina MacBook Pro can work its way through the issue where your 13" MBP can't or can't in a reasonable amount of time.
I have also thought that it is related to window server and was wondering if someone else would bring it up as semi-confirmation since 2 people would have to came to the same conclusion, yes I am weird you don't have to tell me.  I am thinking it is possibly related to the lower priority for background apps; it gets caught thinking every window is in the background, chokes, and does not know what to do which is why the cursor will still move since it never gets "backgrounded".  As for the caps lock, it is pretty much hardware based which is why we can have a virtual machine not read the caps lock on someimes if it is turned on when the VM is started.
I wish Apple would have more testers so things like this would not slip through.  I see more complaints like this when there are external displays on MacBooks than single display iMacs/Minis.  Something that may not be tested enough since it requires more specific circumstances.
Sorry, I don't know how to restart window server without the terminal.  I would have loved to test the theory since that would answer the question of what is at fault quickly.

  • Why is the sound so terrible in 10.4.6?

After upgrading to OS 10.4.6, there are serious problems in the sound when importing clips from my Sony DCR-TRV 900. The main problem is what someone else described as "digital noise," high-pitched bubbling sounds and distortion, in both singing and instrumental passages. (There is also some video stuttering--a problem which did not exist before the upgrade--but it is the sound quality that is simply intolerable.
I have actually burned a dvd from the entire tape, so it is not just a problem with playback within iMovie. There is plenty of memory, and the sound is equally bad in the same places whether I create an entire one-hour project or a one-minute test project.
I have tried switching all the preference options on and off, changing the settings for quality, even importing directly into the timeline, all to no avail. Turning on the "filter audio" option only makes things worse, as there are sound droupouts. I have upgraded Quicktime to 7.1.1, updated permissions, trashed the preferences for iMovie, etc.
I have used the same camera to make a DVD from the same type of recording a few days ago, and the sound and video are fine in the camera playback, so this is definitely an iMovie problem, and also definitely related to the change from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6.
I note that similar problems are being discussed at length for both iMovie 5 and 6, so an upgrade of iMovie is obviously not the solution.
Apple, please get your act together!

    Larry,
What version of iMovie are you using?____
The sound problem may well be due to OS 10.4.6 and/or iMovie 6 (perhaps 5). I have iLife 6, and am having lots of problems with iMovie 6 (see lengthy discussion entitled "Lousy iMovie HD...." in this forum).
I also started out using an external Firewire 400 as well as FW 800 drives for my video files. That's where I first experienced the stuttering audio and video problems in iMovie. Thinking it was the drives' fault (they really should work OK with iMovie), I bought a 300G 7200rpm internal drive and moved my iMovie projects to it (iMovie itself is on my other internal drive -- the system drive, in the Applications folder). Same problem. I'm still getting lousy sound, especially stuttering audio & video. I have discovered, however, by eliminating several extracted audio clips from my movie (i.e. audio clips extracted from their corresponding video clips), that the stuttering ceased and the movie played smoothly in iMovie. I have a strong reason for wanting those extracted audio clips, so this "solution" is not an option for me. I (and several other people) am still waiting for a better solution to this problem.
I only started experincing the poor sound after upgrading to OS 10.4x (and iMovie 6). iTunes works fine. Maybe the problem is in the OS and not iMovie alone. iMovie 6 works fine, up to a point. Seems it can't handle too many extracted audio clips. Otherwise, I like iMovie 6 very much. I have successfully made a couple of very short movies which had no, or very few, extracted audio clips. I bought iMovie 6 so I could edit widescreen (16:9) video as I previously had iMovie 3 on a G4/450 which worked fine, but couldn't do 16:9.
I doubt iLife 6 will solve your problem. But keep us posted if you find a solution!

  • Toshiba L505-ES5018 Speakers work in headphone jack... headphones do not

I started having an issue with sound in my headphones last night. So, I've been brainstorming today, and this is what I've come up with.
First, the sound issue itself... The sound is sometimes muffled, sometimes garbled, and sometimes comes from only one headphone speaker. This is resolved by pulling the headphone jack half the way out.
Second, diagnostic attempts... I tried several pairs of headphones. They all produce some variation of the same issue. However, there does not appear to be an issue with the computer speakers plugged into the same jack (I verified by using the same segment in the same movie to test the sound of each device). No sound issues with the speakers. Also, this is no sound issues with a set of USB headphones.
Third, attempts to resolve the issue... I've been to all the forums I have found through Bing to troubleshoot. I've cleaned the jack to rule out lint being the issue. I've updated the drivers (they were up to date). I've uninstalled and allowed Windows to reinstall the RealTek drivers. And, I've checked to make sure the Network Adapter was disabled. They only thing I haven't done is physically removed the battery and power source from the computer and pressed the on/off button to discharge any remaining charge (freaks me out a lil).
My issue differs from other's description of similar issues, because the speakers work when plugged into the same jack. Any thoughts on how to resolve this? I bought the computer Feb 2010.

I wouldn't rule out the port just because the speakers work. Since all the headphones were having some variation of the issue, it seems plausible to me that there's an issue with the port.

  • IPod touch sound quality terrible

    iPod touch sound quality terrible

Try another set of earphones to rule out the earphones as being the cause.
    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack or other hardware problem.

  • Bluetooth headphones sound terrible

I just purchased a pair of Philips SHB7000 bluetooth headphones and they sound absolutely terrible when paired with my Lenovo Yoga 10 tablet. Worse than an AM radio. But when I use these headphones with my PC or my Galaxy tab or my HTC One phone (all via bluetooth), it sounds great. When I try other bluetooth headphones with my Lenovo Yoga, they sound fine as well. It is this particular combination of this headphone with this tablet that it is unlistenable. Ironically, I bought these headphones specifically so I could watch videos and listen to music on the Lenovo Yoga, which is the one combination of device and headphones that does NOT work.
Any ideas why only this combo has a problem?  I asked Philips and they were completely unhelpful and pointed the finger at Lenovo.

I'm starting to think my next tablet is going to be from another manufacturer... :-(
Thanks for finding that older post.  That's really disappointing but sadly, not surprising.  I have to agree with you, my next tablet will definitely NOT be a Lenovo.  I've had a lot of problems with this tablet, this being the latest problem.  For example, I've found several apps that work with all my devices but not with the Lenovo.  Like I can't use it for Hangouts and Skype.  It also crashes a lot.  Often times I go to use it and it has shut itself off and I have to boot it.  And sometimes it won't charge because it starts draining faster than the charge, even when it is plugged into the outlet.  So this tablet is really quite useless and I'm looking for a replacement.
    Thanks for letting me vent...

  • Flash Player / Firefox Browser / Terrible Sound

Hi there, first of all, can i just state i am semi pro music producer, so its not my imagination lol, i uploaded a video to Youtube of my latest production, when i listened to it in IE was fine, Chrome the same, however when i used Firefox and flash the sound was terribly degraded, at first i thought it might have been firefox so i switched to HTML5 and the sound was perfect, so it was flash that was the problem. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, same result, i then went to reverbnation and engaged the music player, same result, other browsers fine, firefox and flash terrible..
Here is my latest production, listen to it in chrome or IE then listen in flash a massive difference, i tried to find ways of contacting adobe, but no luck.

This should probably be posted to YouTube.  My uneducated guess is that they are serving two different encodings, one for Flash the other for their HTML5 player.
Fwiw, I captured the first two minutes of the song using both Chrome and Firefox.  I then compared them both in Audition (pasting an inverted copy as a mix) and saw that they were basically identical until around the 1:20 mark (I cropped some of the initial rain sound so my timing is a bit off from the full recording.)  At the 1:20 mark it appears the firefox/flash copy is either missing a portion of the audio or is briefly sped up.  At this point, the audio differs with Firefox being ahead about a second.  I've uploaded the audition multitrack so you can take a look.
Before the divergence, I could not notice a discernible difference when I solo'd between the two tracks.
    Chris
Ps. Great song and production.  Very nicely done.
