L540 Windows 7 mit UEFI

Hallo Leute,

Laut https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/tkb/articleprintpage/tkb-id/Special_Interest_General@tkb/article-id/22

  • Arch and preinstalled windows 7 UEFI dual boot troubles

Hi guys, I have a UEFI pc already with windows 7 on and want to dual boot arch. Problem is the current uefi partition is only 100mb and whenever i try to install a bootloader in the arch install it gives the message 'not enough room on partition'. is there a way i can increase the current uefi partition size without effecting the windows install?

Try checking how much free space you actually have on the ESP. 100MB is smaller than most people here recommend, but it should be big enough to hold the Windows boot loader, a Linux boot loader or boot manager, and at least two or three (probably more like ten or fifteen) Linux kernels and initrd files. If the 100MiB is nearly used up, then that suggests that something unusual is chewing up a bunch of space, and you can probably delete those files. This is just a task of routine file management -- identify what's consuming the space and delete anything that you don't need. The trick is figuring out what you don't need, so if you're uncertain of something, post back with details (for instance, "I've found 70 1MiB .png files in the Foo/Bar directory; do I need them?").
If something is legitimately consuming that much space, you can either create a second ESP (although that could cause problems down the road if you need to re-install Windows) or resize your partitions. Chances are you've got a Windows partition that immediately follows the ESP. Resizing it so you can increase the ESP's size is possible, but will require resizing the Windows partition from the front. This is risky and is likely to be time-consuming, so be sure to back up before you do it. Another possibility would be to create a larger ESP elsewhere on the disk, copy the contents of the first ESP to the new one, and delete the original. The 100MB of unused space would be wasted, or maybe you could find a way to use it (swap space comes to mind, although 100MB is tiny by modern swap space standards). On a modern disk, 100MB of wasted space is likely to be trivial -- for instance, on a 1TB disk, 100MB is just 0.01% of the total disk space.
As cfr says, some boot loaders/managers, such as rEFInd and GRUB, enable you to load your kernels from something other than the ESP. Thus, if you're running out of space because you've got big kernels or initrd files, you could put them elsewhere and use just a small amount of space on the ESP for the boot loader/manager.

  • Upgrading Windows 7 (Legacy BIOS/MBR Disk) to Windows 8 (UEFI/GPT/Secure Boot)

    Hi there,
I've recently purchased a W530 with Windows 7 pre-installed.  Ultimately, I'd like to replace this with Window 8 + Secure Boot.  I believe I can get Windows 8 via the Microsoft Upgrade offer for a reasonable price, since this was a recent purchase.
What's the best way to reach my goal?
The Windows 7 install uses Legacy BIOS to boot with an MBR disk.
I had a quick look at Acronis, and I can see that it's possible that the "OS will be automatically converted to support UEFI booting" (http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#14021.html) when using it's tool.
If I don't use this approach, what can I do?  Can I:
    1. Use Rescue and Recovery in Windows 7 (Legacy BIOS/MBR disk)
    2. Wipe the drive and reformat it with GPT?
    3. Install Windows 7 with UEFI enabled using the Rescue and Recovery made in step 1?
    4. At this point, I would now have UEFI and GPT.
    5. Perform an Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and enable Secure Boot?
Any thoughts as to whether this would work?
    Richard.

    Hi richii,
The Acronis approach ends up in failure. Didn't give it a second look at the reason, since the tool it's not necessary. I also tried several other "automatic" tools without success.
The recovery approach will fail because it's tied up to BIOS boot.
But I've performed the conversion from BIOS to UEFI two times successfully. After some digging, is not SO hard. It's just... "undocumented". Very, very undocumented, hehe. I made a step-by-step guide: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14286.converting-windows-bios-installatio...
Let me know if it helps you...
Anyway, if you don't have data/software, I would go for the clean install approach.
    Cheers.
If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

  • Grub doesn't detect Windows partition (UEFI)/ xorg won't start either

    Hey guys,
    1) Looking for some help here. I've installed Arch on to my desktop and I'm running into some issues with my dual boot (UEFI).
When I went to create my Arch partitions I was running into some issues with cgdisk, but I was able to fix it and able to create a successful partition table. However, I don't think for some reason my windows installation had an EFI partiton. Which is odd, because I'm pretty sure it was setup with GPT & UEFI, which if I understand it correctly needs an EFI partition. Anyways I created my own efi partition and made a directory in /boot/efi for grub. I installed grub and it worked fine, detected Arch and everything. I followed the step to install os-prober first too. I think the error lies in the fact that I didn't mount the windows EFI, I created my own. Which again brings me back to: should I have had an EFI partition created by windows? I'd like to be able to get back to my windows system if possible, if I messed something up with the windows bootloader and it's not salvageable, it's not a huge deal.
    The table is the following
    sda1 ntfs system reserved (windows)
    sda2 ntfs (windows partition)
    sda3 ext4 (root partition)
    sda4 fat32 (efi boot partiton-not windows)
    sda5 ext5 (home partition)
    2) I'm also having issues get X started. I think it is a driver issue but I can't be sure. I have 2 nvidia GTX 660s in SLI. I installed xorg-server and then installed both nvidia and nvidia-304xx. But whenever I try to run startx I get the following error
    (EE) no screens found(EE)
    xinit: giving up
this is with gnome installed and my .xinitrc file in my user directory.
I check out the log file of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and get the following errors
(EE) Failed to load module "nouveau" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) no drivers available
    (EE) so screens found
Not sure what I am missing here. I've tried reinstalling xorg and gnome and all the drivers I could think of that the error above listed. However it always throws the same error.
Thanks for you time, if you need anything else I would be happy to provide it!

FWIW: reFind doesn;t mind multiple GPTs. I can't speak for GRUB. But shouldn't you be able to boot into the setup (what used to be "BIOS") and see if there is a boot order there or something? If your firmware is similar to mine, you can set "boot options" and allow the machine to let you pick a boot device. Windows should show there if it's available.

  • Extended partition on old MBR HDD makes Windows 7 UEFI boot fail

There seems to be a bug in Windows 7 Pro x64 that prevents it from booting on a GPT partitioned HDD when the same machine also has an MBR partitioned HDD with an extended partition.
I have a UEFI bootable PC with two HDDs:
Disk 0 is GPT partitioned and contains Windows 7 Pro x64 and openSUSE systems.
Disk 1 is MBR partitioned and contains Windows XP Pro x64 systems and bootable ISO images.
Both the disks also have separate partitions for data and for booting.
They are normally booted via rEFInd on disk 0 as follows:
    UEFI => rEFInd  => Windows 7 or GRUB2.
    UEFI => rEFInd => disk 1 MBR => GRUB4DOS.
I had previously installed Windows 7 when it was first released, but abandoned it in favour of XP and openSUSE instead.  With the end of support for XP I decided to re-install W7.  Before doing so I unplugged disk 1 to ensure that W7 booted completely
independently of XP.  After installing W7 I installed SP1 and all the Windows updates.  The new W7 system could be booted without problem via rEFInd => \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
However when I plugged in disk 1 W7 would no longer boot.  It displayed the message "Windows is Loading Files" as the bar progressed twice before returning to the rEFInd menu.  On selecting W7 again it presented the option to "Launch
Startup Repair", but on doing so it too just displayed "loading files" and returned to the reEFInd menu.
I UEFI booted from the installation DVD and ran Repair.  When re-booted W7 presented a menu with choice of new and recovered systems, but both failed as before.  Neither could be booted in safe mode.  Booting directly from the UEFI firmware menu
into W7, instead of via rEFInd, gave similar results.
Investigations showed that the problem is caused by the extended partition on disk 1.  If it is deleted, or just hidden by changing the partition type from 0x0F to 0x00, then W7 boots OK.  Plugging in an external USB HDD with logical partitions also
    prevents W7 from booting.
This all seemed to be similar to the problem described in KB979374, so I downloaded the hotfix (404153_intl_x64_zip.exe), which is supposed to be applicable to Windows 7 as well as WindowsServer 2008 R2.  However when the hotfix was run it displayed "The
update is not applicable to your computer" and logged the following error:
       error 2149842967 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "<pathname>\Windows6.1-KB979374-x64.msu" ")
Is this because the version of files mentioned in KB979374 is older (6.1.7600.20617) than the version of Winload.exe in my system (6.1.7601.17556)?
According to http://www.techienewsnetwork.com/247/22/ SP1 included hotfix 979374, but it doesn't appear in the list of Installed Updates given in my W7 control panel.  Should it, are hotfixes included in a service pack listed individually?  If
not is there any way to tell whether or not hotfix 979374 has been applied?
How can W7 be booted without having to change the partition type code of  extended partitions every time, is there a newer hotfix that will fix the problem in Windows 7 SP1?
Almost all the references I can find to this problem are at least 2 years old, which suggests it might have been fixed.  Does anyone else with an up to date Windows 7 SP1 have this problem with extended partitions.  An easy test is to plug in an external
HDD with logical partitions and see if W7 will still boot.
I don't want to convert disk 1 to GPT as that would make XP un-bootable.  Also GRUB4DOS only supports MBR, and it is very useful for booting ISO images as well as XP.
    Cheers.

    Hi Wade,
To be sure that openSUSE, XP, or any other software on my PC isn't part of the problem I decided to do a new install of Windows 7 on a blank HDD.  As I don't have a spare one I had to backup everything on disk 1 (MBR) and then wipe it, including the MBR,
with zeros (using AOMEI Partition Assistant).
I unplugged the original disk 0 so that the PC had just single completely blank HDD (previously disk 1),  UEFI booted the Windows 7 DVD and installed W7 again.  Unfortunately at this first attempt W7 partitioned the blank HDD as an MBR disk and booted
in legacy BIOS mode, even though I had booted the DVD in UEFI mode.  So I deleted all the partitions it had just created and converted the disk to a GPT one.
The next time I installed W7 it was a UEFI one, with an EFI system partition.  After installing SP1 and re-booting it a few times to make sure it was working OK I plugged in the external HDD with an extended partition before re-booting.  The result
was exactly the same as reported above for the main GPT disk: it briefly flashed "Starting Windows" then displayed "Loading files" for a few seconds as the bars progressed; when Startup Repair was launched it failed as well.
After removing the HDD I booted the new W7 and added some missing drivers and installed all the Windows Updates, including the optional ones.  Many hours later the result was a new up to date installation of Windows that worked perfectly (no errors in
any log files), with no other software on the PC.  However as soon as the external HDD was plugged in it failed to boot, as described previously.
I then ran Bootrec from the DVD, trying all the commands,  but the results were exactly the same: everything worked successfully but no Windows installations were found, and it didn't fix the problem.
The documentation on how to use Bootrec describes how to backup the BCD store that is on the C: drive (e.g. "ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old").  However the BCD store for UEFI based systems is in the EFI system partition, NOT on the C: drive.  This suggest
that Bootrec does not apply to UEFI based systems.
Are you sure that the MBR is used when booting in UEFI mode?  From what I have read in several places (not MS pages) the protective MBR on the GPT isn't used, but instead the UEFI firmware runs \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi which looks in the BCD store
in the EFI partition.  Can you point me to any MS documentation please that explains exactly how UEFI booting works for Window 7, including its use of the MBR.
Do you have a Windows 7 system that can boot from UEFI when an MBR disk with an extended partition is attached.  If so how is your installation different from the one I have just set up, i.e. Windows 7 installed on a PC with just
    a single empty GPT HDD?
Do you work at Microsoft?  If so perhaps you could find out if anybody with a straightforward UEFI booted Windows 7 has problems when an MBR HDD with an extended partition is attached.
Sorry for the delay in responding, but a lot of work was involved.

  • Help me with Windows 8 UEFI mode

I am using the latest bios for my Z77 GD65, 10.9 BIOS
I have selected BIOS Mode Select: UEFI
And i have installed the Windows 8 in UEFI mode. Both of my partitions have GPT conversion, so uefi mode is installed, in msinfo32, says BIOS Mode: UEFI.
    I have 2 problems
    1. My debug led from the motherboard doesn't display anymore my CPU temperature, it displays a RO message
    2. Is normal that when the Windows 8 boots, it shows me the Msi Logo, instead of the classic windows logo ?
    3. If i want to enable from the BIOS the windows 8 feature, and Secure Boot, it gives me an error something with a logo graphics card, and some thing called GOP.

    Looks fine so far.
Is there a question there? You haven't explained what you have tried or how it has failed.
You say that you tried to install grub but failed each time. You do need to install Arch (or another Linux distro) first as far as I know. That is, you cannot begin by installing the boot manager - you need to install the system first.
Please read the Beginners' Guide. Also see the link in my signature on asking good questions.

  • [SOLVED] Windows/Arch UEFI--kernel panic at bootloader install?

I've been trying for two days now to get a Windows/Arch dual boot going, UEFI style.   After HOURS of struggle (it's hell being a noob) I managed to get Windows 7 installed UEFI-style from a USB.  Arch install is fine until I get to the step that involves installing a bootloader, and everything turns to crap.
Some kind of....I don't even know what.  Core dump??  A screen full of numbers & letters!
With both rEFInd and gummiboot (haven't tried grub yet), I get the same result:

What the heck is going on?!

Just INSTALLING gummiboot causes mass chaos:

There's a whole screen full of "call traces" and stuff...  UNINSTALLING gummiboot generates a metric ton of this stuff, too....
[edit]  Something is SERIOUSLY borked in my system.  I've now gotten the identical (or very similar) result trying to install gummiboot, rEFInd, AND grub.  Some kind of kernel panic, or something...
All of that screen verbage going by is WAY above my pay grade at this point...  :-/

  • L540 Windows 7 7260AC wireless has serious issues

I just got my L540 last week and right away I started noticing issue of dropping wireless connection.  I updated with the newest intel driver and took the L540 to a job site.  I was programming using wireless to connect to the devices and I had problems all day.  I kept thinking the issue was the devices.  Finally after lots of troubleshooting I figured out that I had no issues if I connect via LAN.  I also ran a continous ping to one of the devices and I was getting "request timed out" every 10 seconds or so.  Continous ping with wired LAN worked perfectly with no time outs.  Lenovo/Intel needs to come out with a better driver for windows 7 for the 7260 AC card.  For now I am stuck to programming via LAN.
If you are just browsing the web you may not see this issue but ping will show the dropping of packets.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the issue?

I've not found a fix, but I'm just adding a "me too" to this issue, despite running a different OS (Ubuntu 14.04, this hardware (or maybe lenovo's variant of it) or it's drivers / microcode are not ready for end users).
The connection is rediculously flakey, but moreso on 5ghz than 2.4ghz. often drops to 1mbps and drops completely, if it goes about 18mbps then I'm lucky. other devices are running at 270-300mbps further away than this laptop.

    Hello!
The problem I had with UEFI Click Bios 1.43 my system can not use.
A UEFI installation of Windows from the UEFI shell is not possible neither in IDE, AHCI or RAID mode, loading the Windows setup files in the RAM more than 90 minutes after discontinuation of the installation disk partitioning with bluescreen. An installation in bios emulation mode while the system is very unstable faults in RAM, often with a system crash.

  • Error when try to install windows 8.1 from UEFI USB

    Hello !
I have prepared a UEFI USB flash drive installation for Windows 8.1, as described in this link :
    http://www.nextofwindows.com/how-to-make-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-to-install-windows-8/
The computer is on UEFI mode.
Now the computer boot from the USB flash drive, but after some seconds, I get an error message on a blue screen:
Your pc need to be repaired
The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contain errors
    File \windows\system32\boot\winload.efi
    Error code :0xc0000359"
It’s strange because the hard drive has no partitions, and the USB flash drive doesn’t have a path path like
    \windows\system32\boot\winload.efi.
What is happening and what should I do?
    Thank you !

    Hi,
When install Windows on UEFI mode, you need to convert your disk to GPT firstly. Therefore, please check if your disk was already converted to GPT partition style.
On the other hand, you can access to the link below which talking about how to install Windows using UEFI partition style.

  • HP Pavilion P2-1013w Desktop PC - UEFI Install with WIndows 8.1 Pro RTM causes hang

I have an HP Pavilion P2-1013W Desktop PC with the UEFI enabled bios.
With Windows 8.1 Pro RTM Build (MSDN Download available now from Microsoft - Released September 17th 2013 - Again,. this is 8.1, a.k.a. Windows Blue RTM)
SATA Mode is set to AHCI
    BIOS is UEFI Enabled
I boot from the Windows 8.1 Pro USB Installation Media using the UEFI: USB Storage option, Windows Setup starts. I get to the partitions screen, remove the partitions then click New. Windows Setup creates the 4 Partitions (Recovery, MSR, System and Primary) as expected.
When I click Next and Setup begins to copy files, the system locks up. The mouse pointer stops moving, keyboard is unresponsive, and it will sit at 0% for as long as it's left on.
After checking, Microsoft makes a few notes about the requirements. Setup will not run if the OS does not match the UEFI 'bitness'. If this were the issue, I would get a text-mode message about it being the wrong architecture. I don't get that. I get the install wizard, so it is supported.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824898.aspx Has more information.
And I suspect this is a version problem as the original Windows 7 install was a UEFI install, not Legacy. It appears the BIOS firmware I have installed is not compatible with Windows 8.1.
Will an update be made available? Or will I have to revert to WIndows 7 UEFI, and upgrade?

  • Cannot boot Windows 7 from UEFI bootable usb

    Hello,
I need to install Windows 7 in UEFI mode using USB flash drive and for this purpose:
    - created Windows 7 UEFI bootable USB using Rufus application
    - In BIOS choosed UEFI Hybrid boot option with CSM
    - disabled switchable graphics
    - disabled fast boot
    - secure boot is disabled
When I reboot and choose to boot from the USB using F9 boot menu, the computer continues to load my current system from my HDD and not the UEFI from the USB.
(I used the same USB and Windows 7 and succesfully installed windows in UEFI mode on my desktop machine but the laptop doesn`t want to recognize the USB as a bootable.)
I tried to put the USB on different slots but that doesn`t help.
Tried to boot from the UEFI USB drive in Legacy boot mode in BIOS, but no result.
    My sistem is as follows:
    System Model HP ProBook 4540s
    BIOS Version/Date Hewlett-Packard 68IRR Ver. F.40, 29-Jan-13
    SMBIOS Version 2.7
    System Type x64-based PC
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2601 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
I searched the HP forum and the internet for a solution but nothing helps.
Cindly ask for support. Do anyone have or resolved the same problem?
    Regards.

UEFI will not permit Windows 7 install did you disable that to Legacy Bios boot?
If not sure follow this help?
Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode
