  • Reproducable Kernel Panic when streaming via Mplayer X or VLC (27" iMac, ATI5750)

Since Lion (and yes, I did install 10.7.1) I have an odd behavior:
When streaming von my Dreambox to VLC or Mplayer X I get a Kernel Panic after 5-15 Minutes. Everytime. Always.
I have a iMac 27" 2.8 i5, 8GB Memory, and an ATI 5750 (1024MB). And right now - I hate my Mac. I whish I NEVER updated to that bugged beta software you call OS X Lion. Don't get me wrong - I use macs since the G3 processor and loved the machines .. until Lion.

Updating this to know that I have determined that the kernel panic is being caused by a Kernel extension. I found it in System/Library/Extensions/. I deleted the Instant On entry and everything is all file. I hope this helps someone else out with a kernel extension kernel panic issue for their mac!

  • Too long url error when emailing thread with replies

There is apparently a bug in the "email thread with replies" feature.
I tried emailing myself this thread and it returned this error:
    Request-URI Too Large
The requested URL's length exceeds the capacity limit for this server.
Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) Server at discussions.apple.com Port 80
No surprise it did either. Look at what it was trying to send.

p.s. I previewed this thread and used the p class="code" for the html tags around these long urls. Doesn't that work anymore or am I misremembering the permitted tag?

    Thanks for your answer,
It's an web application made in Oracle ALBPM and which uses JSPs to entering data. The insert is made on the database object inside the ALBPM studio:
    INSERT INTO <<ALBPM SQLQuery object>> ( field-1,field-n) VALUES ( value-1 value-n) );
I read the link you posted, but I'm still confused. I did the following:
    SELECT  FIELD, LENGTH(FIELD), LENGTHB(FIELD)
    FROM    TABLE
I was expeting to get a larger value in LENGTHB(FIELD), but the values are equal. I can only insert 2000 characters from the application, so, I was expecting a LENGTHB 2x greater than LENGTH(FIELD).

  • Trackpad and trackpad button often unresponsive in Mavericks

This is an offshoot of discussion about a mouse right click not always working since upgrading to Mavericks.
I said using the trackpad and trackpad button on my MBP often doesn't effect the computer; I have to repeat those actions multiple times before anything happens.
Drew Reece offered some suggestions for my issues:
First, I came to Mavericks from Snow Leopard because I'd tried Lion and Mt. Lion but found my old laptop (early 2008 MBP v4.1) ran way, too slow.
Before going whole hog on Mavericks I read a lot, then installed it on an external drive (spinning, connected with FW800) and played with it for a few days.  I used Migration Assistant to make the move, which segregated software that was not compatible.  Mavericks was slow for a few days, but did gradually speed up.   However, that was when I first ran into the issue with the trackpad and button not registering with the computer's display.  I also ran into the problems with Mail not liking my 3 Gmail accounts but actually solved that using by booting in safe mode, thanks to another poster here.  Not sure why - I attributed it to Spotlight indexing the drive - everything about the computer was very slow and extremely funky while in safe mode; no way I would want to judge the OS based on performance during that boot.  It was awful.
I did update a lot of applications to Mavericks-ready versions while I was using 10.9 on that external drive.
When I felt comfortable, I wiped my NBP hard drive and did a clean install of Mavericks, followed by repeating the same software updates.  Then used Super Duper to just bring over User folders from that external drive.  Because SD restores the Spotlight state there was no "break-in" period so Mavericks ran reasonably fast right away.  I wasn't ready for iCloud deleting my Address Book data but, fortunately, I replaced everything from the external drive's Users/me/Library/Application Support/Address Book folder.
So, per Drew's suggestion, I ran EtreCheck:

I don't see anything that mentions software - good or bad.  And I don't see anything else that indicates a problem but maybe I just don't know how to read this report?
Sorry about the length of this but I wanted to addres all Drew's suggestions.  And I'm still seeing those intermittent trackpad/button issues.
    - thanks

I'll try to break down each of these sections & point out any bad signs below.
    Hopefully the color helps…

    User Internet Plug-ins:
              CitrixOnlineWebDeploymentPlugin.plugin
              SheepSystemsNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Red items are loaded at the system level
Blue items are loaded at the user level
The other stuff gets loaded into apps like Safari - they are internet plugins.
    Cleanup:
All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.
Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).
Reboot for the system changes to take effect.
    How to find updates:
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
at.obdev.littlesnitchd.plist means look at http://obdev.at for 'LittleSnitch' updates
You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
    Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/
Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here.
    Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/
Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.
Your LittleSnitch is out of date for example, how about hardware monitor or Rogueamoeba's software?
    Launchd jobs: several types
    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents
    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons
User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'] jobs.
EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…
    [loaded]                  - a running job
[not loaded]            - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)
[failed]                    - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.
    User login items:
Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.
These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.
    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:
    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions.
Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.
Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).
Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).
Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.

              590 MB   Wired RAM
              7.97 GB  Page-ins
              3.70 GB  Page-outs

Your Mac has been running for 23 days and since you have 4GB of RAM it may help to reboot once a week or so. Quitting browsers occasionally may help too.
You have 3GB of 'Page-outs' (in the Virtual Memory Statistics). This suggests you have run out of RAM at some point & the OS had to move the info onto the disk - this is a slow process, so you either need to run less apps or install more RAM. Cleaning up old apps may help reduce the amount of RAM you need, so run EtreCheck again in a week or so & see how the 'Page-outs' are doing.
Your boot disk is getting rather full, its is a spinning hard disk, so the performance will decrease the more data you store on it. The data fills from the outside edge towards the middle of the disk, the outside is fastest. If you can free up more space that can help you get better read & write speed. A 1TB disk will perform better with your ~460GB of data. I'd also back it up and boot from recovery mode & verify/ repair the boot disk http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
Another option is to clone the disk to an external & then restore it back onto the the system - this effectively 'defragments' the disk, just have several backups if you plan to do this.
Check that any Huawei software is up to date - HWNetMgr and HWPortDetect are installed as startup items. If you don't need them look for uninstallers or instructions on Huawei's site, it's best not to load items into the system level if they are not needed
Virtualbox looks like it may be from last year (version 4.1.14), it is loading the extensions into the system, so it's important to update it.
See if your login items are causing issues…
Logout of your user account (in the Apple menu)
Log back in, but hold shift as you press the login button. This will disable the login items in your user account. If the Mac is better like this you know you need to remove or update login items.
Running uTorrent as a login item may use system resources that could be used elsewhere.
I'll mark this up like the other reports & add an explanation of the sections below the report.

  • Apologies - Another EtreCheck report for diagnosis

Any help with the following will be greatfully received.
I was having some performance issues running Snow Leopard on this machine after a few years of use - was great up until that point. I installed Mavericks to see whether that would help (naive I know!) but this appears to have made things worse if anything.

I can see that there are a couple of [failed]'s as well as what looks like high page-in page-out counts though I would be interested to know whether these ought to be zero ideally, i.e. when should you start worrying about these?
I noticed that I have been having more problems on Snow Leopard after I had installed MS-Office (no choice I am afraid) and Kaspersky. Neither seems to be hogging CPU or RAM according to the above though. Up until that point I had always made a big point to PC-using-friends that I have an old Mac still running like new.
I notice that after the Mac has been running for a few hours I can hear very faint disk chatter (supporting the paging I guess) when I try to change windows. If I have left the machine along for a while it can take a minute or so to come partially back to life.
If it is just about needing more RAM would be happy to purchase, but loathe to do this speculatively.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Your HD is getting low on space, 30GB free on a 250GB drive isn't much. The OS will be forced to use the slowest part of the disk for new files because the HD fills from the outside towards the center of the platter. See the second chart at http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-Drive-Seagate-MomentusXT-500GB.html for an illustration of how read & write speed decreases across a spinning HD. Whilst I think more RAM may help, getting an SSD or faster HD with more free space will help performance.
The old MySQL startup item should be removed or updated if you use it.
I'd also remove Kaspersky to see if it has any effect. Is it up to date too? ClamXAV is a better option for AV scanning, it uses less resources & doesn't try to load it's own changes at the kernel level.
    Also update/remove Canon.cupscapt.bg? It's also a system level job.
Akamai could cause issues in your user account, so update or remove.
Delete the old.mac job… it will be in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
    com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-[redacted]@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist
Hopefully you have already attended to Google Drive via the Eric's link.
If you are lucky removing Kaspersky or other system level items may make the com.apple.wdhelper job be able to load. Reboot & check it doesn't fail, otherwise wifi may have issues. The rest should help you understand what EtreCheck is reporting to you.
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)
In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.
    Launchd jobs: several types
    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents
    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons
User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.
You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences

  • Blurred Screen

My screen is blurry when I log on.  I've changed the display and updated all software and it is still blurry.  Please help.

First of all I would advise booting to the Recovery Partition and testing if the issue occurs here. In this situation, this will isolate the issue to being either Software of Hardware. If the issue is found to be Software, i.e. it doesn't happen in recovery, I would advise doing an SMC reset, and while you're at it, throw in a PRAM Reset. If the issue continues to occur after this, perhaps boot into Safemode. Safemode pretty much just disables all third party extensions/kernels and clears a few things including caches and disables all startup and login items.
You could also possibly try connecting your computer to an external display and test if the computer is blurry on the external monitor, if it is.. it'd probably be an issue with the Graphics Card.
    Best of luck,
    Nathan.

  • Mavericks getting error "file: table is full"

    Hi,
since upgrading to Mavericks I noticed very odd behaviour on my MBP 2012 after some days of uptime. Tabs in browsers stopped working, internet connections got cut off and apps crashed and weren't able to restart. Only a reboot helped. This started to happen regularly, after 1 - 2 days of uptime.
I've since asked around and used the "dmesg"-command in the terminal to see the kernel log when this behavious occurs. It's always the same, lines and lines of "file: table is full".
I've switched off my CrashPlan backup service which I deemed the culprit. It didn't help. I've checked my SSD for errors, SMART-Status says "GOOD" and disk repair doesn't find anything wrong with the disk.
I've also noticed that this error coincided with "QTKITServer"-processes showing up as not responding and shockwave-plugin crashing, at least when using Chrome. I now switched from Chrome to Safari to see if maybe Chrome causes this odd behaviour but I'm not very optimistic about it.
Has anyone any ideas how to narrow this problem further down or maybe even what to do about it? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

See below the report for an explanation
The startup items & kernel extensions are a concern, are they up to date or not used? Update or remove via uninstallers or removal instructions. You have privoxy & glimmer blocker running, isn't that two web proxies?
The 2 failed launchd jobs are system level, so update or remove the related software or delete the .plists
              [failed] com.vmware.launchd.vmware.plist
              [failed] com.bitcasa.BitcasaUI.plist
Adobe updater appears to have 2 user jobs failing too… within your user account.
              [failed] com.adobe.ARM.[...].plist
              [failed] com.adobe.ARM.[...].plist
You can isolate issues with user level tasks by trying to login in a new user account. If that helps it's time to update or remove all the login items & background launchd jobs.
Google apps have caused some users issues, ensure they are up to date or remove them to see if they are the cause. Delete the system level .plists to prevent the updaters from running - the app will nag you about recreating them anyway.
You also have quite lot of internet plugins, I'd consider deleting them all & reinstalling as needed, it's easier than hunting down updated versions.

  • **Read Before Posting** Intel iMac FAQ (Windows, Speed, Compatibility, etc)

    Hi all -
In an effort to keep down clutter and repeated postings, I'd like to start this FAQ. Please, feel free to add to my basic topics.
    • First, the Intel Core Duo is Intel's Dual-Core chip, which is (as I understand it) a better version of the Pentium M series. Read more on Intel's Official Page.
    • Universal is Apple's term for applications that were built on the Universal Binary - which means they work natively, at full speed on BOTH Power PC (G4, G5, etc) and Intel processors.
    • Rosetta is Apple's emulation technology, which seamlessly runs in the background. This will emulate some of the older PowerPC-based applications that have not yet been released with Universal Binaries or released natively for Intel processors.
    • Windows. Apple is doing nothing to prevent it from being installed, but it is not supported in any way. It will most likely be tough to do, as (I don't believe) Windows can do anything with HFS+ drives, let alone BOOT from one. You would need to reformat and partition at the VERY least, as I don't know if Disk Utility can format in the Windows file system. Other drivers (such as the iSight and Airport Wireless) will most likely not be provided, either.
    • Other PCs. Mac OS X will not be able to be legally installed on any machines other than Apple Macintosh machines.
    Hope this helps a little,
    Kyle-

More details found on this site about Classic and Rosetta:
    http://daringfireball.net/2005/06/classicnotsupported
Rosetta is designed to translate currently shipping applications that run on a PowerPC with a G3 processor and that are built for Mac OS X.
Rosetta does not run the following:
Applications built for Mac OS 8 or 9
    Code written specifically for AltiVec
Code that inserts preferences in the System Preferences pane
Applications that require a G4 or G5 processor
Applications that depend on one or more kernel extensions
    Kernel extensions
Bundled Java applications or Java applications with JNI libraries that can’t be translated
    Classic is just not supported.
It is clear that apps that need the G4, G5 or Altivec Code won't run under Rosetta.

Are all those startup items up to date? Check the developers site to see if they are 10.9 compatible, or remove them via the uninstall instructions.
PACE is an 'anti piracy tool' if you remove it you may find an app stops working, so be careful with that one, it handles serial number registration etc.
Java has created 2 invalid system level jobs, remove the files com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist
(notes on file locations below the report)
    What is eastwest server?
You have 3 duplicate Adobe jobs in your user account, remove 2 of the com.adobe.ARM.[...].plist files.
Are all the apps that open on login or via launch agents up to date?
Akamai NetSession seems to be a peer to peer tool for sharing your network connection. Do you really need that running all the time? It seems unnecessary too, Akamai have enough bandwidth, without donating yours.
See the notes below the report to get an idea of what is going on

Red items are loaded at the system level (not necessarily bad, but they have the potential to modify the OS).
Blue items are loaded at the user level
    Cleanup:
All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.
Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).
Reboot for the system changes to take effect.
    How to find updates:
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)
In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.
    Launchd jobs: several types
    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents
    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons
User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.
You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences

  • Mavericks causing macMini early 2009 to run VERY slow

I have had Mavericks installed (from Lion) for about a week. The performance has degraded enormously. I've tried to use Activity Monitor but the new version seems unhelpful as under Lion slow performance was generally a result of memory issues. Hopefully someone has some ideas

    Executor - Path: /Library/StartupItems/Executor
Executor is an old 'startup item'. Apple deprecated this way to load code back in 10.4, so it seems like a good idea to remove unless you run many 68k Mac apps?
http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/executor look for an uninstaller or removal instructions, or delete the startupitem. The RAM Usage says it is loading.
You are loading 3 different Norton kernel extensions & about 8 different Norton background tasks!
    Kernel Extensions:
    com.symantec.kext.internetSecurity          (5.3.1f8)
    com.symantec.kext.ips          (3.9.1f9)
    com.symantec.kext.SymAPComm          (12.6.1f9)
    Launch Daemons:
    [loaded] com.symantec.errorreporter-periodic.plist
    [loaded] com.symantec.liveupdate.daemon.ondemand.plist
    [loaded] com.symantec.liveupdate.daemon.plist
    [not loaded] com.symantec.nav.migrateqtf.plist
    [loaded] com.symantec.sharedsettings.plist
    [loaded] com.symantec.symdaemon.plist
    Launch Agents:
    [loaded] com.symantec.errorreporter-periodicagent.plist
    [loaded] com.symantec.uiagent.application.plist
You are also running Techtool Pro, CleanMyMac & Drive Genius in the background at the 'system' level.
So the question is with all those utilities, why isn't this the fastest Mac on the planet?
I suspect your Mac is too busy cleaning itself & monitoring itself to spend any actual time on tasks you want to achieve.
Your HD looks OK in terms of space etc, no obvious bad signs. The RAM installed is insufficient for all the tasks you are running (probably all the 'utilities'). It is 'paging to disk' which reduces performance (called 'Swap used' in Activity Monitor).
CleanMyMac has a bad reputation around here because it can remove system files & cause damage.
See the threads on the topic, decide if you want to keep it (it may help you remove other apps if you are desperate & careful). If it stays on the system check for any updates to it.
Techtool Pro, Drive Genius and Norton are equally questionable - all they seem to do is use CPU & RAM on tasks that are not needed. If you must use these utilities remove them & run the maintenance tasks once every 6 months or so, just avoid giving them background tasks that will use up resources. I have happily used Macs without these tools running 24/7 for over 20 years. If they must stay, update them to the latest versions.
Update or remove the Amazon kindle app to try to fix this failed job…
[failed] com.amazon.sendtokindle.launcher.plist, otherwise delete the .plist, because the job is failing at the system level.
I would also remove the Internet plug-ins to start over with current versions as you need them.
See the more generic notes below the report to get an idea of the sections. Hopefully it will give you info to act on the EtreCheck report.

    Virtual Memory Statistics:
              1.33 GB            Page-outs
Red items are loaded at the system level
Blue items are loaded at the user level
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)
In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.
You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences
Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.
Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).
You may also want to boot to recovery mode & run Disk Utiility's Disk repair & repair permissions after cleaning up. Others have reported that helps the Mac speed up.
Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).
Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.
Please provide more info on why you feel the need for all the utilities, if it is just for AntiVirus protection, look at ClamXAV, it's free, uses less resources, and only focuses on AV scanning.

  • EtreCheck Report: Could somebody please have a look at this?

    Hello guys (m/f)
I just did an EtreCheck after I read about it a whilke ago here on the Apple Support Communities.  I'm using a late 2012 iMac now, but my previous iMac (2009, not sure when exactly) seemed to be slow too.  It's slow opening tabs, sites, etc.  And it's slow shutting down.
BTW I switched off Time Machine a while ago, as my external WD started reporting bad block.  (Wanted to get my NAS to take over, but can't figure out why.   That's why I've been going without a Time Machine backup for way to long.)
    Here's the report:

You have a lot of potential for things to go wrong. If any of the red items are old they could be doing a lot of damage to performance, since they are loaded into the system level.
Synology appears to be doing something with SIMBL - follow the removal instructions at http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php
It is a hacky way to inject code into apps. Check the synology site for updates.
The failed launchd job [failed] de.writeitstudios.cookiestumbleragent.plist could cause issues within your user account.
    Your login items are duplicated.
    BlueHarvest
    BlueHarvest
    blueharvestd
    Mippy
    Mippy
That isn't a great idea. I'd suggest you logout, log back in but hold shift as you click the login button it will disable all those apps & show you if they are part of your issues.
'Safe mode' will disable all third party extensions & startup items (hold shift after the chime until the spinning 'cog' appears). Ensure the login window says 'safe mode'.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Be aware that some features will be disabled like wifi on some models, graphics drivers will be in a reduced mode - this is normal in safe mode. Reboot to go back to normal.
Hopefully the notes below will help you understand the report better

  • Beyond Password and Internet infiltrations: how to create "mac-fort-knox"

    Where do I begin?
    1) I want to create an impenitrable laptop for use, an 'internet-bricked' laptop for typing and "PDA" work only. Any suggestions via Terminal (and skip the "common-sense"stuff)?
    Please don't ask why...
    2) I assume the laptop must be 'clean' before "locking down the fort". Any suggestions assuming that the laptop has been infiltrated beyond normal measures --compromised firmware, root, extensions, kernels, etcetera?
    3) For entertainment's sake, how would you use your computer if all your passwords were broadcast into the internet as a matter of rote (hypothetically speaking, of course)? Besides entrusting someone else to enter the passwords, what else? ;-)
    4) Without use of Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and with one visit to an "authorized apple-service provider", how could a laptop act as though Remote-Login is being used, or a mirrored-copy of my computer? (No amount of "wiping" the laptop, firmware and all, has proved otherwise. My iphone has the same issue.)
Any and all help will be appreciated on this matter. I've been learning some things, while not learning the right thing yet. Thank you ahead of time, sincerely.

Let me begin by saying that an up-to-date Mac OS X system is, right out of the box, darned secure. There is, at this time, no known malware capable of infecting such a system, unless the user does something dumb to help malware past the defenses. All Mac malware is either already detected by anti-virus software built into Mac OS X or relies on vulnerabilities that have been closed.
For more information about this sort of stuff, see my Mac Malware Guide. There's also a look at the weaknesses in the anti-malware security features of Mac OS X in How does your Mac NOT protect you?.
    Now, to address your questions...
    1) I know you said to "skip the common-sense stuff," but it's really just as easy as turning off wifi and Bluetooth and unplugging any Ethernet cable. Mucking around in the Terminal to "permanently" disable networking is not wise without a thorough understanding of how the system works, and I mean on a very deep level. Changing things in the Terminal in an attempt to neuter networking could cause unexpected behaviors and open security holes that would not normally be open.
    2) There's never been any malware that modified the Mac's firmware. That's not a concern. If we assume that you have had someone untrusted get physical access to your machine, or that you are the target of a government or large organization with great resources to come up with brand new, customized malware, then the only way to be sure your machine is clean is to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system. See How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch. Of course, that requires trusting the system you will download from Apple's servers... but, honestly, you've got to trust someone, otherwise you shouldn't be using a computer at all.
    3) I don't understand this question. If you mean, what would I do if I thought I had a keylogger... I'd erase the hard drive and reinstall from scratch, as mentioned above.
    4) Now I get the sense that you're having a problem that you have not described, and that all this stuff is in response to that problem. You would do better to describe the symptoms of that problem, rather than approach it as if it were caused by malware.
There are many ways that a computer can appear to be remotely controlled when that's not actually happening. I see it all the time. See:
My mouse keeps moving around on its own, as if someone is remotely controlling my Mac!
