  • One Time Capsule & Two Airport Express for Range Extension but will my time capsule hard drive be accessible to all the user on network ?

I am planning to buy 2TB time capsule which is [2TB hard drive + Airport Extreme] and two Airport Express to extend the range of my wifi network. we have a large family & because of that we have 1 macbook, 2 laptops , 2 desktops, 4 iphones, 2 ipads, 3 android phones, 2 apple tvs, 2 ps3's. all of these devices are on my Wifi network but some of them are off usually ps3, apple tv and desktops computers r off but still their is alot of traffic. Now i am buying this 2TB time capsule instead of Airport Extreme so that i can save money by getting 2TB hard drive for me only & not the whole family so i want to know if i can keep the hard drive private & at the same time i want to share my internet connection with all of these devices which belongs to my family members, will this be okay ? and they wont be able to access my hard drive ? & will i be able to access my hard drive if i m connected to any of those two airport express & not the main time capsule. indirectly i will be connected to time capsule by using airport expresses in client mode correct me if i am wrong

You can use TC with whatever wireless you currently have.. if it works you should not need to buy a pair of express as well. The best method is to bridge the TC and plug it into the main router.
You can certainly keep it private for your own access only.. simply set a disk password only you know. Easy.
As long as you have a single network, then wherever you connect in the network will be able to access the TC.. but also note file speeds to the TC with multiple wireless hops will be terrible slow.
Also note all security on the TC is an illusion. It is a home device.. press reset and anybody can then access it. You can even get past disk password. If you want security keep the device off the network.. use an external hard disk plugged directly into the computer.

    Bonjour.

  • Envoyer mes photo iphone sur time capsule

I understand that the best I can view would (should?) be the icon for the iPhoto Library, but that I can't get open it, just as I can't open the active Library file, but have to use iPhoto to interpret its contents.
But shouldn't I be seeing pages upon pages of the icon in its folder over time instead of black windows repeatedly?
To wit: is the .sparseimage being backed up at all, and if yes, where's the proof?  If I had to restore, from where would I restore?  I'm sensing (and have found suggestive evidence elsewhere) that .sparseimage files, like external drives, network drives, and other storage options are NOT backed up by TM - that ONLY internal drives are backed up, and not drive IMAGES regardless of where they are sourced or mounted.  (The exception being that external drives that are directedly wired to the computer can be switched from a no-back-up default state to an active back-up state for TC - but that is the only exception.)  Please let me know if I'm wrong, because that would basically summarize the entire problem.

  • Multiple Users Can't Access Time Capsule Data

My wife and I have two separate Apple MacBooks that share a Time Capsule. We have different account names on these respective computers. I initially set up my Time Capsule and created folders that I can access from Finder.app when I connect over our wireless network. In Airport Utility.app, under the "Disks" tab, I set up the shared disks "with device password", so that she and I can mutually access all the data on the Time Capsule. However, when I try to access it from her computer, I click on the Time Capsule in Finder.app and get this dumb Sharepoint icon--a total dead end. I created another account on her computer with the same name as the account on my own computer, and from that account, I'm able to access all of the data on the Time Capsule. This therefore seems to be a permissions issue, but I've checked all of the files and folders on the Time Capsule and ensured that they all have "everyone read & write" access, so there should be no restrictions on access to this data.
Why are the volumes on my Time Capsule sensitive to the user accessing them? How do I set up data repositories on the Time Capsule that can be accessible to all users on my network? I'm out of ideas.

Are both computers actually running Mavericks??
This is very typical Yosemite problem.
For some reason which I don't yet understand Yosemite is horrible at handling network drives.
    dumb Sharepoint icon
Sharepoint is a dlink app?? If you have ever had some app loaded that uses a different product to apple then it can mess your access.
WD share stuff seems to be the worst and causes no end of problems.
What you are seeing btw is the TC is not a NAS.. you are trying to use it as one.. but it isn't.

  • Cannot Connect to Time Capsule: "the backup disk is not available"

I am having a problem that I can't diagnose with my 500 GB Time Capsule (my HD is 128GB). The firmware is current. I first did a search for 'the backup disk is not available' since that is the message displayed in the Time Machine window (with the red checkmark). The Time Machine widget says this:
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/xxx%20xxx's%20Time%20Capsu
NetAuthConnectToServerSync failed with error: 89 for url: afp://[email protected]/xxx%20xxx's%20Time%20Capsu
I installed the widget after I went to the Time Machine - Troubleshooting user tip, here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2057525. Also went to Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE, here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2296894
I also renewed the DHCP lease, tried to do 'connect as' from the Sidebar window, also via go-> connect to server ("there was an error connecting to the server Timecapsule; Check the server name or IP address & try again"), go to Time Machine under System Preferences, select "None" for hard drive, turned off Time Machine, then turned it back on and reselect Time Capsule as the hard drive to backup (timed out), tried re-setting up the Time Capsule both automatic & manual (times out when reading TC configuration)., and finally, writing this post.
I am connected to the internet with the Time Capsule, and I am concerned about making too many changes, because I don't want to risk losing my internet connection, since that seems to be working fine. I was able to make regular backups until yesterday. Tracing my steps from when it used to work to when it 'broke':
1)I attempted (unsuccessfully) to mount the Time Capsule so that I could do a search on it. (I didn't realize at the time that I couldn't mount a wireless device.)
2)The only other thing I did was drag some music folders that I wanted backed up next to my sparsebundle backup (which I can no longer see, because the Time Capsule is no longer accessible via the finder) only to get the spinning ball with the copying window, which I couldn't force quit unless I quit the Finder. So, I force quit, rebooted, and repaired the disk/permissions with disk utility.
Did I do something wrong by dragging & dropping my files over trying to use it as a backup AND a an external HD? Or trying to mount the drive? Or maybe since adding several gigs of music, I took up too much space & now don't have room for a backup? (In which case, I need to access the drive & erase the music, and start over: if only I could SEE it I could do that.)
I am still doing searches trying to see what I need to do; I haven't yet re-set it, due to my concern about my internet connection, which could potentially prevent me from getting any information to fix it. At this time, I am not sure if this is a Time Capsule, Time Machine, or Airport issue. During the time that I have been writing this, the red check changed to 'connecting' but then the 'delayed - Time Machine is not available' message came back up
    TIA

Reboot the network in correct order.. modem.. router/TC.. clients.. 2min gap.
This is just standard windows.. woops, Mac OS networking now.

  • Time Capsule and iTunes set up not working, please help.

I have moved my itunes library to my time capsule and changed my itunes preferred path to its time capsule location. However when I restart my apple laptop, after having shut it off for the night, and open itunes (time capsule is visible and accessible to the laptop), itunes has reversed the preferred path I set to point to my time capsule to my local laptop hard drive instead. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have looked in other discussions concerning lost itunes file paths, however I never had this issue with my wired external drive; and I only start iTunes after I am sure that my computer can access the files on my time capsule. Thank you.
My laptop is a Macbook Pro 2.3 Ghz running Mac OS X (10.5.2)

If you're still experiencing "disconnects," even with the earlier firmware, but not experiencing these at all when directly connecting your computer to the modem, there is a good chance that one of the following may still be the problem:
o Bad Ethernet cable between the D-Link & TC.
    o The TC is faulty.
    o The D-Link is faulty.
o The TC & D-Link are just not compatible with each other.
o The ADSL signal strength, coming from your ISP into the D-Link, may need "tuning."
I'd start with trying a known good Ethernet cable. If that doesn't resolve the problem try contacting your ISP/ADSL-Provider next to see if they can run a ADSL line diagnostic to verify that there is a good signal to the D-Link; While you have them on the line, see if they can provide you with another modem.
Finally, if available to you, try temporarily replacing the current TC with another TC or another wireless router.

  • Mac OS locking Time Capsule files

I've put a bunch of video files on my Time Capsule so they're accessible both from my iMac and MacBook. They're in folder /videos. When I try to play them from my MacBook, I usually get the message "Item xxx.avi is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened". Think I have all the file sharing options set up properly... any ideas?

You cannot remotely access the TC from windows.. safely.
Let me explain. The TC really only offers AFP for remote access.. all the normal formats are missing. TC is not a NAS.. if you want a NAS buy Synology or QNAP, not TC. They will happily work with both Mac and Windows. A TC will not.
The work arounds are using vpn.. buy a VPN router to replace the ISP one.. The TC will be in bridge mode.
Some people make suggestions of using SMB (windows file protocol) over the internet.. this is very very unsafe.. SMB is blocked by the vast majority of ISP because it is so unsafe.. but people use it on non-standard ports. These will eventually be discovered and hacked. You have almost zero security.
You really need to use the Air or some device that uses AFP.. remember apple build their stuff for apple.. with the occasional glance at the rest of the world.
TC is a combined router and hard disk but that is of no help to you. It will simply not allow SMB access on the WAN port.

  • Time Capsule with ext disk

Hi all - Windows user new to Mac. The network set up okay, two windows pc's wired and two new Mac's wireless, one laptop and one iMac. If I attach a hard drive to the iMac directly, the machine sees it and I can access the data. I want it on the Time Capsule. When I attach it there, double click on the time capsule in the left pane, the disk shows in the right pane in blue. When I double click it, it says it didn't mount. What are the steps to attach a disk to the usb port on the time capsule and get it accessible from the other computers? I've tried reading this forum, got as far as I did thanks to you all. The documentation is not very good, as far as I can tell. Thank you for any help.
    Mike

    Mike,
You will need to use Disk Utility to do this. Move the HD from the TCs USB port to one the USB ports on your Mac. Reformat it, then move it back. Disk Utility is found in MacintoshHD/Applications/Utilities. Here is my procedure for preparing disks...
*_How Should a Time Machine Hard Disk be Prepared?_*
For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
It’s been recommended by many here that your reserve +at least+ double the size of your primary hard disk, that way Time Machine backups have room to grow as the size of your data grows. Additionally, the more space you give Time Machine the more history it can preserve. The less space you reserve for Time Machine the sooner older backups & deleted items will disappear.
One poster recommended this regarding multiple partitions: “If you do create multiple partitions (half and half would be a good place to start), make sure you use the first partition for Time Machine, and the second for your own stuff (the first one will be on top in the graphical representation shown in Disk Utility; you'll understand when you see the partition tab). This way, you can expand the Time Machine volume at any later time by deleting the second partition. Disk Utility allows this dynamic re-sizing of volumes, but volumes can only be expanded toward the end of the drive, when a volume that comes after is deleted to create the room.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1712437&tstart=0]
    Procedure
Connect the hard disk you wish to use for Time Machine backups.
    Launch Disk Utility.
It will appear twice in the pane on the left. (Make sure you recognize that it is different from the 2 icons that represent your Macs' internal drive.) The upper entry represent the device as a whole, including the controller inside. The lower entry represents the hard disk contained within the device.
Click on the upper icon of the external hard disk.
    Select the "Partition" tab.
For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Choose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups. Ensure that the two partitions have different names.)
    Name the disk.
Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
    Click "Options".
Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
    Click "OK".
    Click "Apply". Then click “Partition”.
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups. If you chose to create 2 partitions, then select the first partition for Time Machine backups, and the second for additional files/folders.
Let us know if this was helpful.
    Cheers!
