Lab computer Parental Controls

I have a lab of computer that I am setting up to manage with Parental Controls. How can I copy the user and setting form the main Mac to the rest of the computers in the Lab. So that I have each Mac look identical

Start with the hits from a google search for *lab deployment site:apple.com* and also peruse http://clc.its.psu.edu/UnivServices/itadmins/mac/blastimageconfig

  • Really confused here. I have somehow created both a managed account and an administrator account. The admin acct is now highlighted in system preferences. We are now blocked from using our computer because parental controls keeps popping up.

In attempting to add a music lesson program for my daughters band lessons we have messed up our computer. I now have both a managed account and an administrator account (both in my name).  It is using the managed account now and not letting use the Internet because parental controls keep popping up. I would like to delete the managed account and get back to the admin account but I have no idea what my login is for the admin account. We have never had to use it before this problem started and what we thought it was when we set it up does not work. Any ideas?

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • I accidentally turned on parental controls, when I try to turn them off it says my password is wrong when I know it's not. What do I do so that I won't have to wipe everything from my computer?

Trying to fix something else in my settings I accidentally turned my parental controls on. When I tried to disable them it said my password or adminstrative name was wrong when I know they are both right. I even tried to change my password to the account but that didn't help. I don't want to have to delete my account and am not sure how to back everything up if that is the only option. Is there a simple solution to this?

If you have Restricted your MAIN account in the perental controls that may be the reason. You may have to create a new Administrators account to change the settings on the parent controls.
Not sure as I have never used that feature on any computer I own.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps on this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps on this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5620
Or, if it's available in your country, you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570

  • For some reason when I shut down my computer then turn it back on, it comes back directly into my account, bypassing having to enter a password to get into my account.  This works in direct conflict with the parental controls I've got set up.  Any ideas?

Thank you so much for the quick response to my question.  I tested your directions and it works!!  Thank you.  I would never have figured that out.  I knew I had to go into System Preferences but would not have guessed that I needed to have Automatic Login set to off.

  • HT2900 Hi Is this parental control specific to a computer only ??

For example, I wish to set some parental controls on my home network so that when my children log into their iPods or PC's or iPads that they are restricted from accessing certain content ?
Can this be done by setting a parental control on the main computer only or does it need to be done on every device, or with my ISP
    Thanks

That would be the user account on the computer. Parental controls have no connection with an Apple ID or iTuens Store account.
There is no way to globally manage parental controls on all devices. Parental controls on the Mac are completely separate from controls on an iOS device. For a Mac, you set the parental controls for the user's account in Mac OS X (in the System Preferences) or, as Camelot indicated, on a Mac OS X Server, something few home users have or are willing to set up.
For an iOS device, you would set up the controls on each device individuall unless you want to obtain and learn a mobile device management system such as Apple Configurator, JAMF's Casper, or another such solution. For most home users it's easist just to set up the iOS devices separately.
    Regards.

  • Parental Controls logs - freeze computer

I've recently enabled parental controls on one account on my Core 2 Duo MacBook running 10.5.5.
Several times I've run into the same problem. When looking at the logs of internet sites visited or blocked on the account, the settings application freezes - giving me an endlessly spinning beachball. I am unable to force quit the application from the dock, from force quit on the apple menu, or from the activity monitor. I am unable to log off my account, because the settings application is still running and it cancels the log off attempt. The only solution I've found is to restart the computer. This has happened several times, and is the only reason I've been forced to restart the computer in many months. Is this a known issue? Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help.

    HI ForrestGreen,
Try Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. Launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit Disk Utility when it's finished and reboot. Go to System Preferences/Parental Controls and see if it functions as it should
Hopefully that will do the trick, if not post back.

  • How do i view websites visited parental controls on another computer

I set up parental controls on the computer and it said I was able to view what the child was looking at by another computer and I'm not sure how to do that.

You can't open them with iPhoto but you can view and restore individual photos in the backups.  See the gray box towards the end of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.

  • Parental Controls - letting kids shutdown computer

Is there a way to enable the kids to shutdown the computer if parental controls are on and their usage hours are restricted? Currently, they can't shut it down so it stays on for days, wasting electricity.
    Dan

Most electronic devices fail during startup from a cold start, not from running in a warm, sleep mode. Ever see a light bulb fail while running? They blow when turned on. Turn off the TV for an hour a week and recoup any minimal electricity used to keep the computer warm—it's not wasted. That's a greenie myth.

  • Parental Controls + Computer Games

I bought my kids some computer games (Cars, Incredibles, Dora, Ratatouille) for them to play while they are logged on under their user accounts. However, the games either won't run, or they don't have any sound under their parental-controlled account. They run fine on my side. Any ideas? Am I missing turning on access to something for them? I did enable QuickTime.

This is often caused by software developers not writing their applications properly for multi-user environments. Game software is notoriously bad for this.
Try installing the app in one account. Try the app out in another separate non-admin account, without parental controls on. Does it work there?

  • Added parental controls and computer now a black screen

I put parental controls on my son's macbook pro and the next day the computer is a black screen.  What happened?  I can't turn the computer off or get back to the desktop.  Any suggestions?

Changing TV's only is not a big deal, and it should work as long as you are in the same room, and using the same coax cable that comes from the wall.
Just make sure the cable coming from the wall goes to where it says RF IN or FIOS TV IN on the back of the set top box
Make sure you are using one of the following
Coax Cable from the Back of the STB where it is labled "TO TV" and the other end plugs into the TV where it says CABLE IN ANTENNA IN or something to that effect.   It will give you Modulated RF (on channel 3 only), so use your TV remote to put it on channel 3, or the up and down channel button on the TV set itself to tune to channel 3.
Composite Video (red white and yellow) from the back of the STB to the Back of the TV labled video IN.    Then use your TV Pay attention to where you plugged it in on your tv, it should be labeled, like AV 1 or AV2 or Video 1 or video 2, and then use your TV Remote to select the correct input.
If it's an HD set top box and a newer tv, then you'll want to get yourself a HDMI cable from monoprice.com or amazon.com.   They are only a couple bucks.

Use security software or a router with a build-in password protected logging feature if you want to keep a record of visited websites.<br />
You can't prevent people from deleting the history and other personal (private) data in Firefox and a log elsewhere will always work even if other browser would be used.

  • Sub-accounts on new computer for parental control, access to itunes library

I have established sub-accounts on my new iMac in order to activate parental controls. Does anyone know how I can grant the sub-accounts access to the libraries in the itunes account in the administrative account?

Tried hooking up my external drive to my Mini. This morning my Mini had all my info listed, but I couldn't play any songs, for obvious reasons. Now, my Mini is hooked up to the external, iTunes prefs are set on the path to the external - but there is no music in iTunes. No lists, no songs, nada. Just a virgin iTunes window. ***?

  • Parental Controls Broken After Updating an Application

I'm using Parental Controls (remotely) under 10.5.4 to manage what applications can be opened in a small lab. This works well until I need to update an application on the lab computers. I'll use Firefox as an example, but this happens with all applications.
    - I have a version of Firefox on all lab computers (3.0) and Firefox is allowed under parental controls. Everything works.
    - I update Firefox to 3.0.1. (In this case, I simply overwrote the older version of firefox, but I get this problem when updating applications with installers.)
    - If I remotely look at the Parental Controls settings for the lab computer, I can see that Firefox is still allowed (checked)
    - Now, on the lab computer, I log into the managed account and try to open Firefox, I get a warning about the application not being on the allowed list.
    - I log out of the lab computer, and again, access the parental controls setting remotely. Now Firefox is Not Allowed (unchecked).
    - I check the box to allow Firefox
    - Now when I log into the managed account, the new version of Firefox opens.
Some fixex / workarounds I have tried:
    - After updating Firefox, I remotely accessed the parental controls settings and first disallowed (unchecked) Firefox, close parental controls, reopened it, and then allowed (checked) Firefox. When logged into the managed account, opening Firefox produced the not allowed error. When I return to the Parental Controls settings, Firefox is now Not Allowed (unchecked). Checking the box to allow Firefox fix the error.
    - I've tried restarting after updating Firefox and it did not work.
    My guess:
I assume that Leopard keeps a list of applications and versions installed on the computer. Parental Controls allows a specific combination and any update will break the parental controls. To allow this updated application to be opened, its old entry in the list must be updated to reflect the new version. The only way I have figured out how to do this, is to try and open the updated application and fail. Then I can finally allow the updated version.
Does anyone know of an automated or scritable way to do this. I have tried working with lsregister, but have not had any success. I need a way to force Leopard to reload / refresh its list of installed applications, with having a user logged into the console.
For a different solution, does if you can send a UNIX command to machine sitting on it login screen, that will cause the machine to login as a local console user. I could then send "open /path/to/updated app" and a logout to force the application list to be refreshed.
Many Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi! Did you ever receive any feedback on this issue?
I am interested since I have noticed the exact same frustration with Parental Controls since updating to 10.5.
While a very good idea, I think the parental controls, especially with respect to permissions about applications is utterly useless at the moment. It is completely stupid that I have to reset the permissions for applications each and every time I update an application. I have three children who use the computer and I don't want them using every bit of software on the eMac. They are naturally curious and will click on programs that can do damage without realizing is.
I have also turned off any parental controls regarding web browsing but my children still hit many sites that are blocked by Parental Controls. I do have a linux gateway that does the filtering quicker and better.
If anyone at Apple is listening ... please spend some time to fix this for the next update.
    Thank you.
