LabVIEW 2010 SP1: "Controls" pop-up palette "Select a control..." bug?

I'm using LabVIEW 2010 SP1 (32-bit) and I noticed today that I cannot place my custom controls on a VI's front panel when I use the "Select a Control..." option on the "Controls" pop-up palette. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this same problem?
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1) Create a custom control, or download/save the attached custom control "Machine State.ctl" (< a strictly-typed enum control).
2) Open a VI (new or existing).
2.1) If the "Controls" palette is visible (pinned open), close it.
3) Right-click with the mouse on the VI's front panel window to display the "Controls" pop-up palette.
Note: DO NOT use the "Controls" option in the "View" menu here.
Note: DO NOT pin open the Controls pop-up palette at this point.
See my comments below in the "Notes" section.
4) "Controls" palette > "Select a Control..." option
5) Using the "Select the Control to Open" dialog, browse to, select and open the custom control file (e.g., "Machine State.ctl").
At this point the on-screen cursor should show the outline of an instance of the custom control I just opened, but for me that doesn't happen; all I see is the "+" crosshair cursor, and left-clicking with the mouse on the front panel does not place an instance of the custom control on the front panel.
Notes:
* In step 3) above, if I open the VI's "View" menu and select the "Controls" option, or if I pop-up the "Controls" palette and pin the palette to keep it open, I can successfully use the "Select a Control..." option to browse to, select, open, and place an instance of my custom control on the VI's front panel. The failure only occurs when I use the "Select a Control..." option on the pop-up (unpinned) version of the Controls palette.
* I can successfully drag-and-drop an instance of a custom control onto a VI's front panel from a Windows Explorer window, or from the LabVIEW project explorer window.
* The host computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise x64 w/ SP1.

MachineState.ctl ‏5 KB

Just now I tried creating and using controls on five different computers, each running Windows 7 Enterprise x64 w/ SP1.
On three of the systems the problem did not occur; I was able to place a user-defined control on the front panel using the "Select a control..." option on the controls palette.
On two of the systems the problem still occurs. Upon further investigation, however, I learned that the hard drives in these two systems were cloned from a "master" hard drive image the IT department created. So I'm guessing there's some bad mojo on the master hard drive image, and that's what's caused this problem to show up on these two systems (and others).
So for now, I'm just going to put up with having to use the old "drag-and-drop" method for placing user-defined controls on the VIs. Thanks for your feedback and assistance with this.

  • Building App Gives Error 6 about 50 - 80 - 99% of the time. Windows7, LabVIEW 2010 SP1

    Hi
First off here is a link to a discussion of the problem.  http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Error-6-occurred-when-building-an-Executable-in-Labview-2009/m-p/997...
I have tried all the suggestions on this link with no luck.
Background:   have been using LabVIEW 2010 without problems since Sept, then I started getting the error 6 with the following message.
" Error 6 occurred at Delete in AB_Engine_Delete_Internal_Files.vi->AB_EXE.lvclass:Build.vi
    ->AB_Engine_Build.vi->AB_Build_Invoke.vi->AB_Build_Invoke.vi.ProxyCaller "
This started on one project and is now occurring on another project.  Sometimes it builds 50% of the time, other times I can't get it to build at all.  I have upgraded to SP1, no change.
Here are some things I have tried.
    Moved build directory to c:\a
Renamed project, moved project right under c:\
Disabled Google , disabled Win indexing, disabled Win7 user acct. Control, run LabVIEW as Admit all the time, win explorer closed
mass compiling, closing the project, closing LabVIEW, re-booting
    Unistalled LabVIEW 2010 SP1 and re-install, twice.
I believe I rebuilt my project in a new project.
I moved my projects to a WinXP system laptop I have, and they never get Error 6 !  Short term fix, but I have to use Win7.  So I hope this means it is not my code.
The funny thing is that this is totally random.  The unfunny thing is having to explain to a client I can't get my code to compile during a frustrating 95% of the time failure episode, yikes!
Any help and suggestions would be welcome.
BTW, the next step is to totally uninstall LabVIEW with a 'special' procedure and piece of code sent to me.  Don't want to, but am really at wits end.  Also waiting to hear back from my service ticket, but am desperate to have parallel solutions to try.
    Thanks
    Mark Ramsdale

    Thanks for the clarify.
I also meant to post this link.  It has a lot of info, this is the link I tried most if not all of the suggestions for.
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Get-Error-6-about-50-of-time-when-building-Application/td-p/1242634
By the way, I was told that uninstalling LabVIEW will not resolve the issue, dodged a time killer :-)
It seems the error is caused by Win7 and file reserving.  Waiting to hear back on that.  Have an SR.
Again, any suggestions welcomed, maybe some Win7 ideas from those who know more about it.

  • LabVIEW 2010 SP1 may not cleanly shut down

Occasionally LabVIEW 2010 SP1 (32-bit, running on Windows 7) will appear to "hang" when the "Getting Started" window is closed.  The window disappears but the shortcut icon still appears in the Windows toolbar in the bottom of the screen.  Right-clicking and selecting "Close Program" does not work and Windows seems to think any VIs that have been recently closed are still open.  The program is still in the list in Task Manager and it can successfully be shut down all the way from there.
This is more of an annoyance than an operational issue (I think) - is there something I am doing (or failing to do) that causes this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Unplugnow,
Deleting the .ini file will not cause any issues in terms of being able to reload Labview it will simply restore the default settings for Labview which will insure that there were be no data corruption issues. I have tried this procedure on my side with no issue although I would recommend copying the .ini file to another directory in case you need to recover this information at a later time.
To another note, does this issue arise when you are opening a particular VI, or does it occur when you are simply opening and closing Labview?
    Best,
    Blayne Kettlewell

  • Labview 2010 SP1 - How to install just the labVIEW and remote panel

    Hi all
I am currently using a licensed version of LabVIEW 2010 SP1. It came up with 6 to 7 DVD’s each of them containing around 5 GB of data. Installing all these stuffs eats up around 30 GB of ma C drive.
My project just deals with 2 EPOS controllers controlling 2 of maxon EC motors and these 2 EPOS controllers are communicating via USB port with the client PC. This client PC have to be monitored and controlled remotely by host PC containing the same LabVIEW version.
To do this, do I have to install all of these 7 DVD’s or just enough to download the “LabVIEW for education 2010 SP1” from the NI website, available in the below link “http://search.ni.com/nisearch/app/main/p/ap/tech/lang/en/pg/1/sn/n8:28,ssnavdl/”
    Awaiting for your reply  friends.

I tried another machine, 64 bit of course, as I want to deploy my application on a 64bit PC, but still got the same problem.
This other machine was from HP, iCore 3 (4 CPUs) 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM and running Windows Professional 64 bit.
Now as I see it, it could be a Run-time environment mis-match error.
For this I tried installing a 64 bit LVRTE from NI, but still no sucess.
I checked DEP, for all 3 PCs and it was set to the following
Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only (first option).
I am confused. I can not find a solution for this and it is really frustrating.

But I am assuming that when I make the installer, the 32-bit Run Time Engine is appened with the installer, as show below
Since from the picture you can see its including the support installers from '\Program Files (x86)\'
The application runs queries to fetch data from database in SQL server 2008, and for that I am using a Microsoft SQL Native Client 2008 R2 64 bit ( this is the only version that installs on either PC, even the one on which I developed my LV Application).
I am not using any driver, only toolkits for reports - and for that I un-checked the "Remove unused polymorphic VI instances" when making the executable, otherwise LV throws up an exception that share variable are not being included.
Yes I did reboot every time after I ran the installation.
    Still getting the same error.

That's a question only the provider of the application can answer.
You could also take a look into the system event log if there is an indication for the reason of the application failing to start properly. It is possible that certain services are required for the application, but they do not run on the machine.
Another point is possibly missing rights. So you might want to test the application once with the option "Run as Admin" (right click menu item on the application shortcut or the exe itself).

That appears to be a problem with your .NET installation, not LabVIEW. I'd suggest repairing or reinstalling your .NET framework.

  • Labview 2010 SP1 silent install

    Hello,
I have a student version of Labview 2010 SP1. I have located an article on how to perform a silent install using v2008 (http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/AA2371E815A418DD86257169005F2D99?OpenDocument). I was wondering if anyone had a 'spec file' or silent install file for 2010 SP1? If not has anyone tried creating a .MSI using WinInstall?
We are trying to push it out using Group policy to one of our small teaching labs. I was going to create a startup batch to accomplish this.
    Thank you
    ZoeTaite

OK...after some reading I see you can generate a 'spec file' that will help with the silent installation of the Labview 2010 SP1 software via group policy. Is there a way to to modify the nisuite.xml to automatically register the software? Like I mentioned we are pusing this out to a student lab and I don't want to provide the SN (even though it comes up when you launch it).

  • Labview 2009 SP1 crashes when moving large selection with arrow key

If I select a lot (10 or 15) of Block Diagram components and try to move them some distance with the arrow key, I will frequently get a program crash.  Since a smaller number of components seems to crash after a longer travel distance, it looks like some kind of buffer overflow error.  I do not see this problem when using the mouse to move selections.
I have checked to be sure I have the latest video driver for my NVIDIA Quatro FX570.  I have also tried working with no hardware acceleration and no combined writes.  This is happening on Windows XP SP3 with all the current updates.
It has become so bad that I have to do a Save As every fifteen minutes to keep from losing data.
Why don't I use my mouse for all movements?  Because it is not as accurate and not so easy to restrict to one dimension of movement.   My hand is not as steady as it once was.
I hoping someone will have a suggestion that will clear up this problem.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As I indicated, I had the same problem with 8.5 and just DID a new installation of Labview 2009.
Since it is possible my three-monitor setup, which obviously requires more video memory, may be at the root of the problem, I am satisfied with the workaround of dragging the objects near their final destination and then using the arrow keys.
Three monitors are ideal for front panel, block diagram and Help/Internet/Probe Window.  When I had to work in the field with only one monitor, I felt severely handicapped.
You may consider the matter closed.
Thanks for attempting to duplicate the failure.

When I open the main GUI VI, I get about 750 - 800 VI's in during the Loading phase and then the LabView program locks with one of hte processor cores fully consumed. It seems that if I Clear the compiled cache or sometimes do a Mass compile I can get it open, but this needs to be done even after closing the VI and then re-opening.
Any ideas are appreciated as to what could be causing this or any way to get further debug information.
    Thanks,
    Anthony

    Hi Yeager,
Thanks for your question. Since you have so many subVIs, and although it will be tedious, you might want to choose to inline some of them which would make loading them and running them faster. Inlining is for subVIs that do not contain recursion or automatic error handling, and it automatically compiles the code and places it into the calling VI. You can inline by going into the subVI and press on File>>VI Properties. Then click on execution and place a checkmark in the Inline subVI into calling VI checkbox. You must also place a check mark on the Reentrant execution checkbox on that page.
Another option would be to load subVIs as subroutines, once again by going into the VI properties and selecting subroutine from the priority pull down menu. Here is a link with more information on this. http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361H-01/lvconcepts/vi_execution_speed/
You can also right click on the subVI in the main VI (if you can hopefully get it loaded at least once) and choose call set up, then choose reload for each call or load and retain on first call. This loads the subVI into memory when the first call to it is made rather than loading it into memory as soon as you open up the main VI. • Error -1074397038 occurred at IMAQ Start.vi for 64bit Labview 2011 SP1, Win7

    Hello,
I am using a MC1362 camera from Mikrotron with a PCIe1433 framegrabber. I was using it with windows XP, 32 bit, labview 2010 SP1 32 bit, it was working perfectly fine. I just switch to windows 7 with labview 2011 SP1 64bit, and it is not working anymore with my custom routine in labview, though it works with MAX and camera file generator and I use the same camera file.
When I run my routine, I have this error message:
Error -1074397038 occurred at IMAQ Start.vi
    Possible reason(s):
NI-IMAQ:  The requested serial termination string was not found in the returned buffer.
Then, If I try to run the camera with MAX, it doesn't work anymore, I have to reboot the camera, and put it in the right mode with the Mikrotron control tool to obtain an image.
I have seen similar issue on a Basler camera on the forum, and it has been solved by using a camera file to set the different parameters. There is no camera file complete to set all the parameters of the camera, so I had to program them in serial to drive the camera with my Labview routine.
Could you help me to solve this issue please?
    Thanks
