LabView and Firewire support under Mac OS X

I've been following the Labview upgrades for Mac OS X and noticed that now there is a move towards supporting at least some USB and PCI devices. We have a DAQPad system in the lab that uses Firewire and I was wondering when NI will be supporting these types of devices under OS X under LabView...
I'd love to move all of our equipment off Windows simply for the ease of administering them and using OS X and Labview seems to be a great option except for the limitations on portable DAQ systems since it would appear that LabView isn't supported multifunction DAQ either USB / FW / PCMCIA very well under OS X.

I ordered NI USB-9161 thermocouple ADC. On the NI website it was claimed that the device can be used under windows, Linux and OS-X. However the cd included in the package only referred to Windows (in the read-me file on the cd however it was confirmed the device could be used under Linux and OS-X.)
I have downloaded the OS-X NI-DAQ MX Base from the NI website and installed the package. This package should have the USB driver. According to the docs with the USB device these devices come with stand alone datalogging software. However I can't locate any USB datalogging software anywhere on the NI website. Also one could test at least if the device is recognnized with the experimentation and automation explorer. Again I can't locate this app for the OS-X.
The OS X system detects a device 28082 (vendor: 14627) on the USB bus.
I would approeciate any help to get the USB-9161 working under OS-X.
Thanks,

  • How do I get firewire support under XP running on OSX 10.8.2?

I have an old Nikon film scanner that is bundled with Nikon scanning software that requires Windows XP.  The film scanner has only a firewire cable.  My iMac is running OSX 10.8.2.  I installed Oracle's (free) VirtualBox and was able to get XP running on my mac.  However, I soon discovered that VirtualBox has no firewire support.  That sent me searching for other methods of running XP under OSX.  I thought Apple's Parallels 8 software would do the trick but I don't believe it supports firewire either.
Can anyone give me an idea of what software would allow me to run XP with firewire support under OSX 10.8.2?
Another question:  Do those firewire-to-USB adapter plugs work and are they safe to use?
For those who have familiarity with film scanners, VueScan is not a desirable option for me because it does not fully support Digital Ice, while Nikon's software does.
    Thanks..

How do I clear space on Macbook air in the following folders? Mail, Containers and Application support under libraries?

Why? If you need space on the SSD:
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
      5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

I am running out of USB and Firewire Ports. Any suggestions on expansion cards for Firewire and USB??
    Thanks

The Sonnet PCI USB Express cards have this problem too - for the record. Sonnet know about the MacPro not waking with it installed, as do Apple. I am sure Apple willl come up with something, I may even find a workaround, but it has always seemed that expansion cards with all my Macs [ waaaay too many] have produced unpredicatable problems.

  • Arabic support under MAC OS X 10.4; 10.5

    hello,
i have an application written in flex, using standart
textfield for inputs. i tested it under windows - it work all fine,
but under max os x 10.4 under safari 1.3 and firefox 3.0 i cant
write arabic characters. in other forms in browser arabic goes
good, but not in flash application. another interesting thing -
copy-paste works fine even for arabic.
i saw other flash applications over the internet and arabic
input works there, what can it be?

Bidi text isn't supported in Flash Player 9 or earlier
(coming in Flash Player 10 though.. see labs.adobe.com for that)
Here's the technote that tells you that:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/a767a478.
What that really means is that some people have gotten it to
work. But we don't build Flash Player to support it, and we don't
test for it (and therefore we don't support it in Technical Support
or Engineering). Hopefully you'll have luck on forums..

  • Copy and paste to a JTextArea under Mac OSX

    Hello,
Mac OSX users complain about the lack of copy and paste functionality
when they run my small Java application. Unfortunately I don't own a
Mac so I cannot test it or find out where the problem is. When I run the
application under various versions of Linux or Windows I can copy and
paste by using the common keyboard shortcuts ctrl-c and ctrl-v.
Searching the web I found discussions here and there, some very old,
but none of them was realy solved or gave me an idea of what I could
try to change in order to make c&p work under Mac OSX.
So I need a little help. First I'd like to know if copy & paste works when
the app runs as applet or standalone application (the jar file can do both).
And, of course: why doesn't copy and paste work under Mac OSX?
The application can be found here (released under the GPL):
    http://transtoba2.seige.net/
And please be mild, it is still in beta state. ;-)
    Best regards
    Leander

The following link helped me understand an issue with copy and paste
    http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-12078
It seems to be down to the L&F you are using and how the key bindings are mapped.
    In summary
OSX 10.4 , Safari and Firefox
    To copy/paste in the Applet Ctrl-C , Ctrl-V
To paste a value from Altio into the OSX environment use ^ V (^ is the Apple key)
To paste a value from OSX into Altio use Ctrl-V
    Hope this works for you

  • Printing to Parallel or Serial Port Printers Under Mac OS X?

Sorry for this slightly off-topic subject, but I don't felt like adding the topic under the Apple Printer Forum.
I would like to use an Epson Stylus Color II on a G3 running Mac OS X Jaguar, or a G3/BW running Panther. The problem is that Mac OS X does not support printers attached to the serial port, or that the printers are not supported under Mac OS X.
I have a similar issue with my Laserwriter 310 Select, and Imagewriter.
I did some investigating and it seems that there is an alternative between (a) using the printers on a Mac running Classic OS; or (b) using GimpPrint, an adapter Parallel-USB, etc.
The problem is that I have a tight operating budget, and already several Macs running Classic OS. So it would seem reasonable enough to delegate the printing job to those Macs through Ethernet network.
The (b) solution is appealing because it is more straightforward and provides direct Mac OS X operation, which is handy in case you are printing from Mac OS X applications.
I would be grateful for your help and advice, both in terms of finance and hardware. Thank you!
    - Frederic.

Here's an eBay auction item that has a good picture of PhoneNet adaptors:
    PhoneNet adapters
These are newer Farallons like I have. I have no idea what the "self-terminating locking connectors" are. Maybe Grant knows. Notice that each connector has two phone jacks; you can see the little terminators in a couple of the jacks. These are required if you use only one port. LocalTalk allowed daisy-chaining of computers and devices and that's when you would use both ports.
Here's a listing for an older style Farallon:
    <a href-"http://cgi.ebay.com/5-Pack-of-PhoneNet-LocalTalk-Adapters_W0QQitemZ300016 248683QQihZ020QQcategoryZ51046QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohos ting">Old Farallon adapter
I recommend the newer style shown in the first listing; we had some of the old ones at the office quit working. The newer style has been more reliable.
Here is the AAUI-to-ethernet transceiver (adaptor) for older MAcs with only an AAUI port:

I can't find a picture of the Farallon ePrint LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adaptor but the link in my first response shows the currently available unit from Asante. IF you find a Farallon ePrint, make certain it is labeled "LT." There is another with, I think, "SW" that only works with StyleWriter printers.

  • Does LabVIEW under Mac OS X support the PCI-MIO-16XE-50?

To the original question: No. However, we have written control and
display applications on Mac OS X that access PCI-MIO-16XE-50 cards
from other computers in an embedded configuration. The Mac OS X box
acts as a UI controller interface and also shows the data in real

  • Acquire images with labview via firewire and TWAIN

    Hi,
I have a camera from optronics. This camera is plugged to my computer
via a FireWire IEEE-1394 connection. The company optronics offers a
TWAIN driver for this camera: some files like TWAIN.dll and
TWAIN_32.dll. I would like to acquire images with labview and
communicate with the camera but I have no idea on how I should get
    started.
The 3 main things I'd like to do are: 1) change the exposure time 2) snap images 3) see the images in labview.
I will really appreciate if someone could give me some ideas to get started...

    Michael, From a
more general standpoint, what you'll need to do is use a Call
Library Function Node (located in the All Functions>>Advanced
palette) to call the necessary functions out of those DLLs. Before you
can do this, you'll need to know some specifics about what functions
are available in those DLLs and what parameters/outputs are associated
with them. This information is typically available in the product
manual or perhaps someone else with experience with your specific
device can speak to that. Once you know the functions necessary to
execute the desired operations, you simply configure a Call Library
Function Node for each of them and place them in your LabVIEW code.
    Just
saw this and want to clarify on this. This is a total no-go! The Twain
interface is a very old technology from the days when Windows was a
cooperative multitasking environment without real tasks or threads. In
order for Twain to allow for some sort of multitasked integration into
an application it requires you to integrate the Twain handling into the
message loop of your application. As you do not have direct control
over the source code LabVIEW is written from, this is a very tedious
operation, with Windows message hooks and such, lots and lots of
semaphore protection to avoid race conditions etc. etc.
There is simply no way that you can do anything even remotely workable
just by using the Call Library Node. You will need a (rather complex)
external shared library that goes in between Twain and LabVIEW and
takes care of all the subtleties. I know for sure because I wrote such
    a beast in the past.
Now there is a Toolkit from the French Alliance member Alliance Vision http://www.alliancevision.com/us/index.html that
does this. If you need Twain I would definitely go for this. My own
library is only to the point of what I had needed for a particular
project, (meaning it supports two specific scanners without issues) and
without any documentation for external users and I couldn't give it
    away for free either.
Just want to warn you but there is a good chance that the Alliance
Vision Twain Toolkit does not really give you full programmatic control
of all the parameters of non-scanner devices and you won't be able to
avoid letting the Twain driver show the device specific configuration
    dialog to manipulate specific settings.
In my own library I have low level functions to directly manipulate
Twain attributes but in order to be able to use that you would need a
through knowledge of the Twain specifications down to the API. That
together with the difficulties to support other devices I don't have
available, made us decide to not try to sell this Toolkit yet.

  • "firewire support" and "firewire enabler"

Anyone know where I can download the latest versions of extensions "firewire support" and "firewire enabler" for OS9.2.2? (G4).  Thanks.

If the PRAM battery in your G4 is the original battery and has never been replaced, these batteries only last 5-6 years, max.
Also, the PRAM battery can go bad quickly if the your G4 has not been plugged into power and has been off of direct electrical power for a week or more.
This is because the PRAM battery stays charged up with a trickle charge inside a Mac when in is still plugged into a power main. Even if the Mac is shut off, but still plugged into power.
When an older PowerMac has not been plugged into power, there is no trickle charging of the PRAM battery and this battery can permanently lose its power in a short period of time as it is the only power that is keeping the actual current Parameter RAM active until the battery exhausts itself.
A low or dead PRAM battery can cause all sorts of operational weird issues with a Mac.
An inexpensive source of this PRAM battery can be found online here.

  • ATI Radeon 9000 PRO Mac Edition supported under Tiger ?

    Hi all,
we are still using OS X 10.3.x for our venerable G4 AGP mac. Back in 2005 when Tiger was the new OS, we were told that our ATI Radeon™ 9000 PRO Mac Edition graphics would not be supported under 10.4.x. Has this changed? I don't want to upgrade to Leopard yet, but would like to use some Tiger features as Mail 2.0 or improved iSync.

So is this why all my fonts are screwed on my G4 MDD dual 1.25 using a ATI 9000 Pro?

  • Mac os 8.6 and 9 support (strange behaviour)

    Hi,
I'm running mac os x server 10.4.4. When i put the view of a folder on a os 8.6 or os 9 client to list, the server or clients (i'm not sure yet) rebuilds the contents of a folder once a second, with as result that some items are standig twice in this list. It is impossible to select an item in this list.
I had this problem also with 10.4.3.
    Anton

Technically speaking, the AFP implementation in Mac OS X Server 10.4 and later includes changes to the 3.1 protocol that are just a bit out of reach for the AppleShare 3.8.8 (Mac OS 9.1) or 3.9.x (Mac OS 9.2.x) client software.
Have you tried implementing access control lists (ACLs) and using them? I have not seen the jumping files behavior with clients who connect using an account that is a member of a group for which an appropriate ACL entry exists.
I doubt that Apple will make an effort to fix this inconvenience, as Mac OS 9 support is a waste of resources at this late date. Although there is no specific mention of no Mac OS 9 compatibility, I think we'll see AFP services continue to evolve, gaining features that were never intended to work with Mac OS 9. In this way, AFP support for Mac OS 9 will be gradually lost.

I need help, I use my phone for everything enclusive to work. I appreciate if you can help. I'm from Brazil. My name and giullia.

Did you purchase this device from Apple or an authorized reseller? It sounds as if you had a device that was jailbroken/hacked to operate on your carrier. Upon updating the iOS, it is now locked back to the original carrier the device was locked to.
Only the carrier the device is locked to can authorize an unlock. You will need to make contact with that carrier and see if they provide unlocking services, and if they do, if you qualify for an unlock. Otherwise, you are out of luck. One that carrier can take care of the unlocking.
