Labview Built Executable - Long Runtime Startup Time

Hi All,
I have a LV 2011 SP1 application that has been built (executable) on a development machine running Windows 7 Professional. The application is copied to the target runtime machine. This machine has the LV 2011 runtime plus other DAQmx pre-requisites. The target machine is also Windows 7 Professional, an quad core @ 3.3GHz Xeon machine that, on paper, is significantly faster than the development machine.
I run the built application on the development machine. It takes around 1-2 seconds for the Startup VI Front panel to show. The application loads and runs. So far so good.
I run the built application on the runtime machine. It takes just over 90 seconds for the Startup VI Front panel to show. The exe process during this time is showing 0% CPU usage and a very small memory footprint (around 32MB). Eventually the Startup VI is shown and CPU usage and Memory consumption climb almost immediately to around 2% and 80MB. This is normal. From this point on the application runs as it should.
My question - why does the application startup time so dramatically different on the target machine? Is there some other startup process inherent in the runtime engine that is taking longer? I have tried loading the evaulation version of Labview 2011 SP1 on the target machine but this appears to make no difference. I know that this delay is more an annoyance than a show-stopper but my clients are asking questions and it would be good to provide some answers.
Some basic web searches have revealed others having similar problems and often the problem is related to some Windows service or other. I have also disabled the firewall on the target PC (though it is not connected to the internet, just a small IO network with ethernet chassis CompactDAQ modules) with no apparent difference. Unfortunately I cannot disable the virus scanner due to company policies.
Thanks for your help all.

I have been having this problem and it is very annoying. I am unable to figure out what exactly is slowing load time of an exe in a target machine. My target machines (3 of them) are not connected to the network. I have LabVIEW 2012 and am pretty sure all drivers daqmx,VISA, and Runtime have been installed correctly.
I have noticed this issue isn't there when the entire development environment is installed. To troubleshoot, I am using my personal laptop as test site (because I can't travel to other cities to fix it without knowing the solution), and my laptop has no previous installations of LabVIEW. I install the application and drivers using the installer I build, but it is exhibiting the same behavior. I must note here that I did not see this problem for LabVIEW 2010 that I was previously using, but my application design has changed. Nonetheless, I have checked the functionality of my application and am absolutely sure it has nothing to do with slow load times.
I am beginning to suspect some component has a bug in it for LabVIEW 2012 but, I am in no position to validate that. Is there anyone that has found a concrete solution that has made their application open instantly and run?
Thanks a bunch!
V
I may not be perfect, but I'm all I got!

  • (My Labview built executable) has encountered a problem and needs to close.

    All,
I've built a labview executable that interfaces with GPIB and the Texas Instruments EV2300 via USB.
The VI runs beautifully on the development machine, and I built the VI into an executable and it runs fine on the development machine.  So I built an installer that installs the Labview 2010 runtime environment on the target computer.  I ran the installer on a production line computer that I know can run GPIB and the EV2300, but when I try to start the executable I get an error that says "(your application) has encountered an error and needs to close."
I can get labview executables that don't talk to GPIB or USB to run on the target machine, so it's not the runtime environment.  And I have VB6 applications that can run the GPIB and EV2300 interfaces without a hitch.
I'm not doing anything weird with the file paths in my program, just creating paths from strings using the canned VI for converting strings to paths.  In the course of the program, I read a few text files and write one.
Is there anything I need to know about how to build an application with an installer?  I need to get this up and running so the test program can run on a production line.

Sounds like a VISA problem. Download and install the latest VISA runtime on the target machine.
Ditto that!  At least One of the installed drivers on the target does not have LabVIEW 2010 support.  Check MAX and NI.com to resolve all the drivers on the target that have no support for 2010.
And yes, you may need to re-qualify the pre-existing exe's- if their code changes to use the new drivers If you are in a heavilly regulated industry.   If so, It might be easier to build in an older LabVIEW version.  Very sad- but it might even be simpler to incorporate the Unit Test Framework to handle regession testing of older code with newer drivers.
Worse-  What if the exe's were built with a legacy version of LabVIEW that is no longer supported by the latest Drivers?
Time to start thinking of life cycle maintenance plans- with a 5 year upgrade required!

  • Create an API to Launch an LabVIEW Built Executable and Pass it Input Parameters

    Hello,
I'm looking for a way to create an API to Launch/Close an executable, created with LabVIEW, which in additional to Launching/Closing tht executable, will also allow me to pass input parameters.
To give you some background, I'm working on a logging utility, basically a background dameon, which I currently have implemented as a LabVIEW packed library and my API is a few VIs to launch that daemon and pass it a filename and a logging rate.  Functionally it works just fine however is executes within LabVIEW not as an independent process.  So instead of using a packed library, I would like to compile my logging daemon down to an executable but I still need a way to launch it and pass it parameters from an external application (such as Teststand).
I know you can launch executables and pass parameters using windows command lines, but I'm wondering if there is a more direct method such as a DLL that I could call in Teststand?  Thanks.
Post CLD and when I'm a CLA when someone asks who I am, I can spin around in my chair and say "I am... the architect."

When Teststand Launches the Logger, it does so by opening a reference to the logger daemon using the "Open VI Reference" primitive and then it launches an instance of the dameon using the "Start Asynchronous Call" node.
This currently, launches the logger within labview not teststand.  If I were to directly call the logger daemon VI itself as a step in TestStand, then it could run in a new teststand thread.  At that point I would need a way to stop that logger which I should be able to do by storing a reference to its control queue within the teststand thread that it is running in.  Since teststand let's you specify VI execution in the runtime engine instead of LabVIEW that might do the job.
The one catch is once the sequence completes, the logger does some cleanup, post processing, etc that depending on the amount of data captured can take some time so if a set of sequences needs to be executed, this could hang up teststand until that post processing is completed.  That is one reason why I wanted it to execute outside of testtand so that additonal sequences could continue to run while the daemon finishes up in the background.
But, it's something I'll have to look into.

  • Installing NI-DAQmx Base using a LabVIEW built installer

I am using a PDA, LabVIEW Mobile Module and the CF-6004 to perform instrument control and data acquistion for a handheld instrument I am developing. Because this instrument is going to be used by another party outside my organization, I am also supplying support software for a companion PC. The support software includes ActiveSync to connect the PC and the PDA, a LabVIEW built application for viewing the data collected by the handheld instrument, a LabVIEW built application for installing/updating the LabVIEW (Mobile Module) built PDA applications and NI-DAQmx Base to install the drivers on the PDA. Ni-DAQmx Base needs to be included because if the PDA battery runs down completely, programs/drivers I installed are lost and the other party needs to have the ability to reinstall the necessary files on the PDA.
The problem is that I cannot find a way to include NI-DAQmx Base in the installer I build to install my LabVIEW built applications onto the PC. It is not listed under the Additional Installers catagory of the installer properties. I cannot run the NI-DAQmx Base Setup.exe with the "Run executable at end of installation" option because I cannot have two LabVIEW installers running simultaneously.
Right now my work around is to use a batch file to install each component sequentially.
Is there anyway to include my my LabVIEW built executables, the Run-Time Engine and NI-DAQmx Base in the same installer package?
    Thanks,
    DAJone

Hello, It is necessary to install Daqmx Base on the machine connected to the PDA and then use the Utility to install it on the PDA. See page 4 of the Mobile Module Manual:

  • Really long startup times

Does anyone else experience very long startup times with imq? If so, do you know the cause and how to reduce it?
We're seeing startup times of up to an hour with the 3.6 Enterprise version. Stopping the broker doesn't take very long, but restarting is a different story. The log doesn't seem to show anything unusual, but there are long periods where it just sits there doing nothing. Here's an example:

You may be running into Message Queue bug
6155089 JDBC: JDBCStore.getMessageCount() takes a long time with large messages and Oracle
I imagine this could also happen if you have a lot of messages or destinations.
A fix is being worked on . In the meantime you can work around this by adding
an index to MQ's message table. Details will be posted shortly...

Looks like whole SD flow you trying to fetch in single query
First you check the database statistic of these table are upto date in system ( Check with basis team )
if this query was working fine earlier.
Most of table involved are huge volume tables which queried with any primary key
Any secondary index on created for LIKP on VSTEL WADET ?
My suggestion would be split the selection queries and make use of primary or existing secondary index to fetch the desired result if possible. For testing purpose split the queries and find which is taking more time and which needs index by taking squel trace in ST05.
Also take ST05 trace of this query in debugger ( New debugger -> special tool -> trace > ST05/SE30)

  • Macbook Pro: long startup time / very slow in general

    Hello everyone,
I purchased a Macbook Pro 15” in the summer of 2010 before going to university.
The startup time has become ridiculously slow. Even opening a web browser is stressful.
I have now completed my studies and I am pretty sure I have uninstalled all the large software I had installed for my degree and deleted majority of my
document/files however the startup time has not improved.
I have been looking through threads discussing Factory resets?
My Mac did not come with a disk (Snow Leopard originally installed). I simply turned the thing on and it was ready to go.
If I was to reset my Mac to factory settings would I need to purchase a disk? Is there something else that I could do instead?
The problem seemed to materialise when I upgraded to “OS X Mavericks”.
The only software I want to keep on my Mac is Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
I have transferred all the documents I wish to keep to another computer so I do not mind losing everything currently on my Mac.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Do you know what the original disks were? Were they snow Leopard, higher than 10.6.3, they are most likely builld specific.
I can not guarantee that it will speed it up, but if your HD was pretty full 50%+ as well as your caches, it should clear a lot of stuff off the machine that can slow it down. It will probably take a couple hours to go thru this, give or take.
How much of your HD is used, I keep mine at about 20% to help keep it faster, (less stuff to search)
If it is just the speed you are concerned with I will send you some links in regards to that. I answered that you wanted to go back to "New machine" settings, hence my reply.
    Slow Mac:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3521
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2026650/mac-troubleshooting-what-to-do-when-your -computer-is-too-slow.html
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
    http://www.reedcorner.net/mpg/
Maybe something here will offer help. The reason for repairing the disk and permissions, etc... is that smetimes the disk gets errors, which the mackine hen has to work around, if it can. Hvaeing your disk much past 50% will slow it down, having caches that have not been emptied and are full of junk can slow it down. Try going to  Safari menu clicking reset Safari, empty cache, also go to Safari Preferences/Privacy tab click "remove all website data.
This would be a start. read thru the links, or do a tottal wipe and install.
I hope this has helped you in some way.

    can you help me please?

It seems, that all Windows machines develop this type of long startup-times over time. Conclusion: Bad quality operating system . There are a few things you may try: Disk cleanup, disk defragmentation and avoiding non-neccesary start-up programs running msconfig. My experience is, that all of these have limited impact, so the ultimate solution is a clean re-install of Windows. To do this, back-up all user data and use recovery disks as available.

  • Hide the Deployment window in a built executable

My LabVIEW application uses Shared Variables to pass data around, and therefore my built executable needs to deploy the shared variables at launch. This is all handled automatically it seems by the builder/executable, but it results in a Deployment Window appearing when I launch the executable. It takes a good few seconds to deploy all my variables, and until it's done my application panel doesn't appear.
Personally I think this looks ugly and quite unusual for an application, I'm sure there will be questions asked by the customer, so I was hoping there might be some way to suppress or hide the deployment window?
This is a snapshot of the window about half way through deployment:

    Hi Thoric,
Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to hide the Deployment Progress dialog box when deploying Shared Variables in and executable. This is confirmed in the Knowledge Base article below.
Can You Hide the Deploy... Dialog Box that Displays when Downloading to Real-Time Targets Or Buildin...
I certainly agree with you however that this is a great recommendation for a future feature in LabVIEW and as such I recommend that you post it as a suggestion on the Product Suggestion Center which I have also linked below for your convenience.

  • Okay I give up - wicked slow startup time

I've been reading every post I could find related to slow startup times, and trying every conceivable solution others have thought of and that I could think of, and I'm still plagued by a slow startup time!
Last week it was not a problem. I had just created a 10GB partition and installed Windows XP on it. Things were running smoothly. My startup times weren't like 20 seconds, but they weren't as bad as they are now (a consistent 3.5-4 minutes). Maybe it would take a minute to a minute and a half to start. Then suddenly over the weekend, it started taking 5+ minutes to boot! What could have happened?
I panicked and erased the Windows partition, backed up to Time Machine (suspecting possible disk failure in my future), and started doing every maintenance thing I know to do (fsck-which returned no errors, permissions repair, reset nv-ram and p-ram, OnyX maintenance scripts). This got it back down to where it is now, a consistent 3.5 minutes. That's still much slower than it should be.
Below is everything the Console says immediately after booting. Thanks so much for anything anyone can do to help!

  • Startup time for ipod

    Hi
What would you say is a normal startup time for the built in ipod app? Mine take 8 seconds to start if it isn't present in memory.

Yesterday, some podcast appeared in my playlist which I had deleted a long time ago. We're talking weeks here.
It was podcasts I had downloaded to the phone through wifi, and never synced to itunes.
I'm starting to suspect that there may be references to podcasts which no longer exists, or do exist but that the ipod app for some reason can't access them. I believe that the ipod app halts for 20 seconds because it's trying to locate/read these files but can't access them for some reason, then it times out.
I'm going to do a complete delete of all the contents on the phone this evening, the delete process which the phone states may take up to 2 hours, and then resync the phone and see if that solves the problem.

  • Bring LabVIEW built exe to front on subsequent launch attempts

I'm using LV 2012 on Windows 7.  I have a LV built executable whose window is commonly minimized by users.  Since there can only be one instance of the exe, if a user attempts to click the shortcut while the exe is already running, nothing happens.  I'd prefer that my app window instead open and move to the front.   I'd swear that LV executables used to do this all on their own, though I don't know if that is due to a change in LV or to Windows.  I'm willing to do it programmatically, but no event seems to get triggerend when you "re-launch" the exe.  Anybody know a trick for doing this?

There may be an easier way, but...
You could modify your INI file to allow multiple instances of the program. Then in the program you can set it so it does NOT show the front panel at startup and add a check at startup using "Find Window" from the windows API to determine if the window already exists. If it does (i.e. you get a valid handle) you can use that handle to move the already running window to the front (also using the windows API as was suggested above) and quit the program, because another instance is already running. If it does not exist, then use a property node to show the front panel.
The only possible issue here is, you will always get a valid handle to the window since yoru program will be running because you just opened it, whether it is the first or second instance. I am not a windows API wiz by any means, but you may be able to determine if you get multiple handles vs. if you just get one valid handle for a window name, and use that logic to your advantage. This is just a stab in the dark.
