LabVIEW for Mac

My boss has purchase two mini-Macs for my serial interface instruments.
I’m a PC-girl and totally new to Mac so I wonder if the same LabVIEW license will do or if we need to get a new (Penn State University)?
Since the Macs don’t have a serial port I also wonder what type of conversion (cable, brand etc) you suggest for the USB to serial conversion.
Can I transfer my previous VISA applications for communication without much trouble?
Thanks

If Penn State has the Academic version of the LabVIEW Developer suite, you should have a copy of the Mac version of LabVIEW. That can be installed using the same serial number as the Windows version.
If they do not have the academic version, you will need to get another (actually two if you develop on both laptops) license for the Mac version of LabVIEW.
As for USB to RS-232, NI does make several of these devices. I’ve never had a problem with them. There are several other companies that make them as well, but I have not used any others, so I cannot comment on them.

  • Trial Version for LabVIEW for Mac

I got shinny new MacBook Pro for Christmas and am itching to try out LabVIEW for Mac.  Is there a trial version available?  I still have to develop for Windows (got VMWare Fusion for that), but I'm still curious how the Mac version behaves.

  • Availability of 64-bit LabVIEW for Mac?

    Hello world,
A quick search of the forum seems to indicate that there may have been some 64-bit versions of LV for Mac produced, but I can't seem to find any recent posts, or how I might obtain a copy.  Does anyone know if there are versions available, or if NI will produce them at some point?
My primary issue is that when reading in and manipulating data files bigger than 500MB, I get out of memory errors (my machine has 8 GB RAM, and OS X has been 64-bit for some time now). Looking at the Activity Monitor reveals that LV allocates just over 2.1GB when reading binary files of this size (before manipulation and making copies, etc).  This of course is pushing up against the 32-bit limit.  Some of my files are this size or bigger, or may require making copies during data reduction/manipulation, hence the request.
    Many thanks,
    S-
PS:  I know, I know, I have heard the arguments for MS Windows before, I am mostly seeking an answer to the question, not an explanation of why system X is better than system Y.  FWIW, in my lab, we use Windows (less stable, more software), Macs, and Linux (more stable, less software; does correlation == causation?  Hardly ever :-)  ).

    Hi Ben,
I'm getting the feeling that something has happened which has left you frustrated with our Mac support. I'm sorry if we've caused you undue inconvenience, especially if it was due to technical inaccuracies in the documentation that is available online. We make our best effort to keep an accurate record of our products and their compatibility. That said, mistakes do happen and we do our best to fix them. If you ever come upon inaccuracies in documentation, please let us know by commenting on the page or contacting our support staff.
As this thread was originally discussing, there is a gap between the software which is available for Mac and Windows operating systems. There are a plethora of reasons for that, and many of them are valid topics of debate. The purpose of these forum boards is to provide a space where users of all types can work through issues they encounter or get the opinions of others. We try to foster a professional, constructive environment for all our customers.
As a company, we gather large amounts of very helpful feedback from our customers. One of my favorite parts about the LabVIEW user community is the number of generous, helpful people who love the product and want to see it improved. I regularly encounter customers who go out of their way to demonstrate obscure bugs which we may have missed otherwise. Many of these bugs get fixed and improve each subsequent version of LabVIEW we release. If you have specific questions or concerns that are actionable, please post them in new threads on the topic; the more detail you can provide, the easier for us to investigate the issue. It's very common for a user to post a link with a question about something that seems unclear or misleading.
I don't know what the goal of your post is exactly. To address the frustrations that Mac software availabilities are less than perfect, we do know that the Mac community of LabVIEW users is left wanting with our current offerings. I'm not sure what else I can contribute other than suggesting to do research to understand the tradeoffs when choosing a development platform. Every language and OS has unique pros and cons; knowing them is always a good idea.
I maintain that in all cases you should choose the language that suits your application and development cycle best. I frequently use LabVIEW because I enjoy using it and find I save tons of time. For the type of application development I do, it makes sense. If your usage of Java solves the problems you face, that's a good thing, and it would be silly of me to suggest you choose the wrong tool. It goes back to pros and cons.
To come back to the point, I'm sorry to hear you (and the other Mac users on this thread) have faced frustration. I don't think my attempt at a didactic post fixes those problems, but I care about LabVIEW and this seemed like a fitting place to remind that we need your help to fix the problems you encounter. We're not always able to get everything done, (notably there still is not a 64-bit version of LabVIEW for Mac) but don't give up on us. We're always trying to figure out the best way to help our customers pursue new goals and we've noticed there is room to grow in Mac.

  • LabVIEW for Mac reopens loaded VIs after crash

After a crash or when you had to force-quit LabVIEW, it loads again the last opened VIs when you start LabVIEW.
This is annoying when you use conditional disabled structures and some VIs are loaded before the project and get broken.
Is there any way to turn this feature off? (Command Line parameter, a file to clear or whatever?)
I find only an entry to disable recovery, but not to disable reloading VIs.
You can reproduce when you load a VI and force-quit LabVIEW. When you start LabVIEW the VI will load again.
I am using Mac OS X and LabVIEW 2012SP1 but I guess this is the same for any version.
    Thanks,
    Stefan

    Stefan,
Try unclicking "Prompt to investigate internal warnings and errors on startup" under Preferences (or Options) >> Evironment >> Internal Warnings and Errors. It is chekced by default.  I leave it on, but I think turning it off may be what you want. I copied the detailed help for that preference also.

  • Is there any way to create an installer for Mac OS and Linux OS once a stand alone application is created?

Is there any way to create an installer for Mac OS and Linux OS once a stand alone application is created?  I have created an executable application that I want to distribute to Mac and Linux users (different applications were created in the respective OS).  I was wondering if there is any way to create an installer?  I think there probably isn't...  If the user were to simply download the Labview Run-time Engine from ni.com would they be able to run the application or is it more complicated than that?
Thanks so much for your time.

I think Shane tried to say, that it is on the Mac OS X installation DVD, NOT the LabVIEW for Mac OS X installation medium. And that could very well have changed in recent Mac OS X versions as well. They used to have Xcode on it too, but that seems gone as well.

  • Developp with LabVIEW for PC but need to compile for MAC

    Hello,
My customer has a LabVIEW Professionnal development suite for Windows.  All the applications should be running under Windows but one (a file viewer) needs to run under both Mac OS and Windows.  How can I acheive this?  Do my customer needs to buy another licence?  Would an application compiled under windows runs on a Mac if the LabVIEW run-tine engine for Mac is deployed?
By the way, the application doesn't use any OS related VIs...
    Regards,
    Patrick

    Patrick
You will need to compile the application on a Mac (there is no cross platform compiler). Then you should be able to deploy tothe customers Mac with a run-time engine.

  • Using MathScript in LabVIEW eval for Mac

Our university has been slow in getting the LabVIEW 2010 site licensed copy, so we have been forced to use LabVIEW 2010 eval for mac to work with some externally sourced 2010 code that we had to rewrite.
Recently, I requested and received a copy of the free MathScript module for Mac/Linux (2010). Unlike the experience of a NI engineer with 2009 eval, it installed cleanly with LabVIEW eval 2010. However, the MathScript VI does not appear to available in the palette. Restarting LabVIEW does not seem to make a difference.
In case this is an eval version / installer bug, it would make sense to wait for our site license to arrive. However, the site license will probably be available after the holidays and I do not want these two weeks wasted in waiting by the students.
    Any ideas ?

Sorry, I don't have any Mac experience, but if you have access to a virtual windows machine (e.g. parallels desktop) you could just use the windows evaluation version instead.

  • Anybody have an old copy of labview for 68K Macs they don't need?

I have a few NI NUBUS cards I wanted to use with a 68K version of Labview
just to mess around. Anybody have an old 68K compatible version of Labview
in the US they dont want (I think 4.x is the last version made).

    Hi Lastmile,
I cannot provide you with an old version of LabVIEW, but hopefully I can help you find some useful documentation.  Take a look at the Manuals search on our website to try to locate specific manuals.  When looking for older versions, I suggest searching by the year of release.

  • How to add instrument driver on labview in Mac

    Hi,
I used to use Labview on windows and there was a menu in Tools >> Instrumentation >> Find Instrument Drivers and then I was able to find the driver for the instrument I was working on and install.
However, since I've been using labview on mac, there is no such menu. It only takes you to the website where I can search and download the instrument driver in a zip file, but then I'm not sure how to install the downloaded instrument driver on the Labview in Mac.
Can someone give me a hint?
    Thanks,

Unzip and move the folder to instr.lib.

  • Version control tool for Mac OS X?

    Hi all
If using labview on Mac OS X,
do you have some version control tools to recommend?
    Thanks  a lot

As far as i know, LV for Mac does not integrate with source code control provider. LV for Windows has two requirements for this:
    a) Professional Development Environment
    b) A source code control provider compatible to the Microsoft Source Interface
There is still always (Mac, Linux and Windows alike) the possibility to control source files using the SCC providers client software.
Many open source project SCCs like CVS or Git integrate, at least in Windows, in the File Explorer.
I recommend you to research possible solutions like this for Mac.
The next question is if you want to use a distributed SCC or a local one. Depending on this, you will have to setup a network server with compatible provider (e.g. RhodeCode).
LV provides both a Diff and Merge tool as EXE (Professional). I am not sure if this is also true for the Mac version, so look for "LVCompare" and "LVMerge".
    hope this helps,

  • Where can I download Run-time engine 6.1 for Mac OS

When trying to run an executable I receive a message "Could not load LabView Runtime Shared Library: err = -2804, "Labview 6.1 Runtime". I did not see Run-time engine 6.1 for Mac OS 9 available for download. I only saw version 6.0.2. Does anyone know where I can download version 6.1??

    Hi majo008,
If you click on the 'Drivers and Updates' under 'Option 3' on the Technical Support page (www.ni.com/support), you can select 'All Software Versions' and choose 'LabVIEW >> Run-Time Engine'. This page will then have a link to the LabVIEW 6.1 Runtime Engine for Mac OS.
