LabVIEW license for terminal servers and thin clients (e.g. LTSP)

Does NI plan to provide a license agreement for terminal servers and thin
clients?
I've been told to purchase a multi-seat license. That doesn't make much
sense since the thin clients won't be accessing DAQ hardware. They're
just used for developing the LV source.
Comments/suggestions?

Yes, this is a very good point. Quite a unique situation when compared to
text based languages. Keep in mind I certainly don't mind paying for that
but I see no need to pay for much of the other features - like running it.
This is certainly one of the other features you pay for with LV. Since
we never plan to run the app on the thin client, why pay for that
feature?
What we do is crank out source code on the thin clients. We then send the
source code to this wireless mobile DAQ station running WindowsXP. From
there we can roll it up to our clients' target systems. That machine is
used for debugging then compilin
g so it has its own LV Prof Dev license
installed on it. Also, it can be operated locally or remotely via remote
desktop (one user at a time).
I know it may sound strange but it works great. And as the NI Software
License Agreement(NISLA) specifies, we have separate licenses on all
machines that load LV into local memory. The thin clients load nothing
into local memory, hence no need for a separate license.

Yes, this is understandable. Installing one license on multiple machines
is a big no-no. However, that is not what I'm trying to do. Take a peek
at the "Grant of License" and "Single Seat License" sections of the NISLA.
> You say "That doesn't make much sense since ..." One of my clients has a
Ha! How about this scenario: As wireless hardware (bluetooth, wifi)
becomes more common, perhaps NI will have a peer scanner on all PCs with
LV installed. That way if you get within 100 feet of a P
C with the same
LV serial number, you get locked out and it sends a small message to the
NI batcave.
Thanks for the response. I'm hoping NI chimes in soon.

  • Multiple servers and multiple clients on one machine

    Hi,
I was hoping someone could give me some direction as to how to go about creating multiple servers and muliple clients on the one computer using RMI and threads. I intend to have say 4 servents (able to perform both client and server methods) running on the one computer, with the clients being able to connect to each of the servers. (I'm doing this to emulate using 4 computers, which I don't have!). I know I have to use different ports to do this. How do I go about the following using RMI - start up a server (port number as argument from command line?), which starts a thread listening for connections from the other clients.. when a new connection is established between server and client, then start a new thread which 'handles' that connection.
The examples I've seen of RMI only deal with single server and single client... I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how to go about this problem!!

    Hi,
I suggest not to use the rmiregistry program at all
but to start the registry in a program of your own.
Then you can specify all you need (url, port, even
client and server socket) as command line argument.
    You need something like this:
    Registry registry = null;
    Remote server = null;
    try
{ // this succeeds if the registry already runs
      registry = LocateRegistry.getRegistry(yourRegistry);
      server = registry.rebind( yourServer );
    }catch( RemoteException )
{ // no registry reachable, create one
      registry = LocateRegistry.createRegistry(yourRegistry);
      server = registry.rebind( yourServer );
    }Have fun,

  • Monitoring Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs

    Hi all,
could anyone tell me if we can monitor Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs with only Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c, or shall we need to install Ops Center ?
    Thank you in advance.

I had the same issue. Upgrading Virtual box from 4.1.16 to 4.1.20 solved the problem.

  • Quicktime 7.04, Windows Terminal servers, and no sound

    Hi all,
I suspect this is related to all those posts I've already read here about sound problems with QT 7.04...
I look after a number of Windows 2003 terminal servers in schools. They used to have QuickTime 6.52 and played sound just fine. However, when I upgraded them to 7.04, the video played but no sound. Testing is easy; I just open up the SAMPLE.MOV in the QuickTime folder! On a terminal server with 6.52, it plays video AND audio just fine. But when I upgrade that same box to 7.04, the sound is then gone!
I suppose the quick solution is to revert back to 6.52. Our concern of course was all the talk about 6.52 having various security vulnerabilities--the fix was to upgrade to 7.04.
So now I have a secure version of QuickTime, but it doesn't play audio anymore. Not much of a solution!!!
Thoughts? Am I stuck waiting for a 7.05 fix? On the terminal servers, the safe mode (wave out only) was already the default option for QT 7.04, and I've tried making various adjustments to no avail.
    Thanks for any help,
    Sir Timbit

    Sir Timbit,
We are experiencing the exact same issue at our school. Most of our classrooms are thin client PCs connecting to a Win2003 terminal server. When we decided to go thin client, we tested all multimedia applications that we could think of. With the upgrade to QT 7, we now have stuttering audio. I certainly hope that Apple is woking on a fix for this as it is negatively impacting our instructors as well as creating a perception that Quicktime is not a good multi-media application.
So, while I don't have a solution... I hope that someone at Apple will address our needs.

  • Use of SQL*Loader and Thin Client

I have a java application that is currently using the thin client. For portability issues, I am unable to use an OCI driver. My application also uses SQL*Loader.
My big issue is that The Thin client requires the HOST and SID for a connection.
But, for SQL*Loader to work in a client/server environment it needs to use the SERVICE_NAME and net8. Is there any way to have SQL*Loader use similar information that the thin client is using?
I know the right solution is to use the OCI drivers, but right now that is not feasible.
Thanks for any help in advance

I assume you are using an ObjectInputStream. Without seeing your code or a snippet I can't be certain...
The JDBC spec says the following about ObjectInputStream :
"An ObjectInputStream deserializes primitive data and objects previously written using an ObjectOutputStream"
Since there was nothing written by ObjectOutputStream, ObjectInputStream has nothing to deserialize and this exception would be raised.

  • Fat Client and Thin Client

    Hello, everyone
I am a newbie with websphere 5. I am wondering if anyone know fat clients(Swing GUI) work with websphere. I know thin clients(web-based interface) work with websphere. My scenario is like this and this is all experimental purposes:
I want to program a Swing GUI interface as the client that accesses the enterprise javabeans that is installed on websphere. So the Swing GUI is the client and Websphere is the server, which makes it a 2-tier Application. My question is basically, does websphere only work with web-based application or does it work with both desktop application clients and web-based application clients also?
    Any Ideas?

Thanks, that's the kinda of straight answer I am looking for. I have been researching for this answer to this question for a long time and even posted several similar questions on Java forum, but no one seemed to have a straight answer. What I was thinking of programming is:
    client/server program using websphere.
    Client:
GUI interface using Swing that is just like a regular desktop application and not a web browser (I notice the most common application using websphere are web based applications like portals).
    Server:
Using Websphere to accept connection when requested by the client and act as a bean container, which holds EJBs. The EJBs will connect to the database (mssql server) to pull data from.
Does this sound OK and can this be done using Websphere? I am using Websphere 5.
Thank you, I am just a newbie in j2ee, just trying to get started in this area of programming.

  • WSA S160 Support for Terminal Servers (How are terminal server connections handled?)

We have a terminal server environment with a mixture of computers and laptops. Currently we have multiple proxy servers and would like to considate down to one. Our current solution does not work well in a terminal server environment. We are looking for a way to integrate all equipment with one soluton and I was curious as to how the S160 handled users connecting via a terminal server.

Edadios thanks for the response. I was reading over this document (see attached), and it looks to me like the connection would be tracked via a cookie surrogate. My bigger concern is that we are looking to be able to track usage per user even though they are on a terminal server. Our current solution (Barracuda) is not able to perform this function. I am hoping to have a S160 on site this week to do some testing but was hoping to gather some intel in the forums prior to implementation.
The response helps clear up what protocols are in use but I am still wondering how terminal server connections are handled by the WSA and if they are truly handled and tracked per user instead of by the device they are connecing to.

  • Rich client and thin client

    Hello experts,
Rich contents are data manager, console, import manager and syndicator GUI clients
thin contents are portal way of looking mdm using iviews.
    is this true??
    Regards
    Eva M

    Hi Eva,
    Good Day !
    You are right .
A thing client (generally a software application/portal) depends primarily on a central server ( MDM server in this case) .It will drive communicating inputs from user to server and delivering back outputs from server to the user.Thin clients are independent of the machine you are using .
    Eg:Portal
A thick client passes on data from an MDM user to Server . Such clients are generally used for performing data storage and processing activities directly at server level.Thiick clients need dedicated installations of GUIs and are machine dependant.
Eg:data manager, console, import manager and syndicator GUI clients
    Hope this clarifies your query.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard - OS licensing for physical servers

    Hi,
With Windows Server 2012 Standard, I can install the OS on up to two virtual machines.
For physical machines, how many physical servers can I install the OS on if I don't use any VMs?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Just to add, each license covers up to two physical processors. If you have more than two physical processors in a server, you need to assign additional licenses for it.

  • Are LabView licenses for Windows transferrable to Mac OS X?

I can't seem to find any information on this subject on the National Instruments or in a search on this forum, so hopefully someone can answer these questions.
My lab has 3 licenses for the use of LabView 8.5 in our lab, although the instructions that I've been given to install LabView involve downloading the trial software from National Instruments' website, and then using the activation code to activate the software. Trouble is, the trial software is for Windows only, and I was hoping to be able to run LabView on the Mac in our lab.
Are the licenses for LabView transferrable across platforms, or does my lab need to specifically purchase a version of LabView for the Mac? If the licenses *are* transferrable, how do I request a CD for the Mac installers if we've already purchased LabView for Windows? Furthermore, if I'm able to use these licenses on a Mac, is it possible to install the Windows version on my Mac on my Boot Camp partition, and install the Mac version on my Mac OS X partition and only use up one license? I'm not sure if all of our hardware has drivers that will run under Mac OS X on an Intel Mac, and I don't want to be penalized for this by having to use up two licenses on the same machine.
Any answers to these questions would be much appreciated.

    Hi SimX,
The LabVIEW licenses are not transferrable directly, since LabVIEW for Windows and LabVIEW for Mac are entirely different products and have different installers.
In this case, you should contact your local sales representative to see what your options are. You can find the email contact information at http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/nicc.call_me?p_lang_id=us, or call in to 866-ASK-MYNI (866-275-6964).

  • Does Time Machine/Migration Assistant successfully transfer software licenses for Microsoft Office and Adobe?

I have a MacBook that I purchased in late 2007.  It's been very good to me over the years.  However, I'm been having various minor issues, and tonight I noticed that the screen goes to black at about 45° as I'm closing my laptop.  In other situations I'd try to fix this myself, but right now I'm a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural South America and have limited access to the right tools, much less replacement parts.  So instead I'm taking it as a sign that my trustworthy companion is about to give up the ghost and I should get a new computer now, instead of completely running this one into the ground and potentially losing important documents, photos, &c.
My question is simple:  Does Time Machine and/or Migration Assistant successfully transfer licenses for Microsoft Office 2011 and for Adobe software?
My software installation disks are in a box in a basement in the United States.  And since I'm not quite sure which box it is (last summer I did not see the need to label my own boxes), I'm not going to ask some unsuspecting friend or family member to dig through all my posessions to find an alphanumeric code or two, especially if I can just transfer/migrate the license without it.
    Many thanks.

Try the combo update on the old machine.
