  • TestStand Open SQL Statement does not support SQL's ORDER BY clause???

    TestStand 1.0.3
    Windows 2000 SP1
    SQL Server 2000 Personal
You've got to be kidding me...
It appears that the built-in TestStand Open SQL Step does NOT support the
"ORDER BY" clause in the SELECT statement, even though the documentation
says it does. Is this true?
I have an Open SQL Statement query:
"SELECT * FROM [MyTable] WHERE ([Batch ID]=1234)"
it works fine, returning a correct record count 120 records. If I change
the Open SQL Statement query simply by adding an ORDER BY clause, such as:
"SELECT * FROM [MyTable] WHERE ([Batch ID]=1234) ORDER BY [MyField] ASC"
it returns a record count of zero. I know that "MyField" exists in the
MyTable table and contains valid data. The
second query works fine in SQL
    Server Enterprise Manager.
Am I missing something? Is it true that the TestStand Open SQL Step does
NOT support the "ORDER BY" clause? If not, what &#$!ing good is it and why
does the manual state it is supported? Is there any other way using just
the TestStand steps to order a database recordset on one or more fields?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Grrrrr....

    > Bob -
    > The database step types do not do anything special to the SQL command

    >
    > It would be surprised if the step types are messing something up.
I've been doing some experimenting over the past couple of days. Simple,
one-table queries seem to handle the ORDER BY clause fine. Th
    ings seem to
get messed up when I try multi-table queries with ORDER BY clause with the
TestStand database steps. I get no errors but the returned record counts
are always 0 with the ORDER BY and positive without the ORDER BY. The exact
same queries work fine in Visual Basic/ADO and the SQL Server Query
    Analyzer.
    > Questions:
    > 1. Have you verified whether the data is actually returned even though
    > the record count is zero?
Hmmm... yes data IS getting returned (at least on the two instances I just
checked), but the record count is always zero. I was not proceeding with
processing if the record count was 0.
Still... I don't know how to loop through the recordset without knowing how
many records there are an not eventually generate an error by passing EOF.
Is there another way using the TestStand database steps to determine a) the
number of records in the recordset or b) when I'm at EOF?
    > 2. Are you using any advanced options on the Opend SQL Statement step
    > type, specifically
the cursor type set to forward only? Forward only
    > cursors do not allow for record counts.
Everything on the Advanced tab of the Open SQL Statement step is set to "Use
    Default".
    Bob.

  • Close a notepad window in labview after opening it with system exec

Is there a way to close a notepad window within Labview after opening the window using the System Exec function?
Also can Labview send characters to Notepad so they show up in its window?

You can send a quit message to another window by using one of the VIs in a collection of windows interaction VIs called winutil32 (or something similar), but you will have to know the window name. Try searching for it on this site.
You could probably also use the windows PostMessage function to send characters to another window, but that would require learning how to work with DLLs in LV, reading up on the function at the MSDN site and implementing it. Another, more simple but less secure, way is to use the windows Keybd_Event function to simulate keyboard clicks. If the notepad window has the focus, it will receive those clicks. Try searching this site or google for things like "Keybd_Event LabVIEW" or "simulate keyboard".
Try to take over the world!

  • LabView/TestStand Developers wanted in Dallas with Systems Integrator

VI Technology is currently looking for LabView/ TestStand developers for the Dallas Area. www.vi-technolgy.com  Please email [email protected] or call or dallas office at 972-233-1950 ext 201.

Thank you for your replies. We have found a suitable candidate.

  • Why a VI has a broken arrow when I open it when labview is open but becomes executable when it is opened by double clicking

I have a VI with some subVIs from a dynamic link library. When I open the VI using "open" or "open VI" in labVIEW, the VI is broken. In the error list,it saids one or all the subVIs from the dynamic link library are not executable. However, if I exit labview and open the same VI by double clicking it, it becomes executable without any change being made. Sometimes I can fix the broken arrow by configuring the "call library function node" in the subVI and saving it. But when I open the VI again, the same problem and error message appear. I am using labVIEW 6.1 for the top level VI and those subVIs from the dynamic link library could be developed in a different version of labVIEW. Is this the cause of the problem? Another possible reason I can think of is that somebody installed another application developed in labVIEW on the same computer. Is it possible that some settings were modified during the installation that cause this problem to occur? I am suspecting this because I first notice this problem after the installation of the other application.

Since the problem started ocurring after installing another application, I would suspect something with that last installation. Without knowing more about the installations, I would not be able to help much. Did the other installation perhaps install another DLL of the same name? Try uninstalling the last app to see if the problem goes away.

  • Read a file in labview already open in another program

    Hi,
I am using labview to read a text file, also there is one more software(not lab view) is writing to the same file which I am using to read.My problem is that ,is it possible to read a file which is already openned by another software ?
    Thanks,
    Sachin Kudari

    Hi Sachin,
that depends on that other software...
    - When writing to a file usually it is opened with exclusive access rights to the writing software. No other software can open the file simultanously.
    - The file may be opened with non-exclusive access by the writing software. Then LabVIEW may access the file too.
    - The file may be opened with exclusive access rights by the writing software for each write access and released when write access is finished. Then LabVIEW may open the file in parallel, but errors may occure for simultanous file access from both parties...
It's never a good idea to share one resource (your file) for several requests (your different executables). It may work (with several conditions), but it doesn't need to.

  • Does the LabVIEW TestStand UI button control support multi-line captions?

I would like the caption of a LabVIEW TestStand UI button control to wrap onto two lines (multi-line) instead of being confined to a single line.  For example, instead of the caption looking like:
    Loop On Selected Steps...
I would like it to appear like this:
    Loop On Selected
            Steps...
I have plenty of vertical space on my TestStand operator interface but my horizontal space is limited, so it would be preferrable to grow buttons vertically instead of horizontally.

Upon further investigation, it looks like this is a bug (or a "feature change") in TestStand 4.0.  The TestStand 3.5 UI button control automatically placed text on succesive lines if the width of the button decreased below the size required to accomodate all of the caption text on a single line.  However, this is no longer the case in TestStand 4.0.  TestStand 4.0 does not place text on successive lines when the button size decreases below the threshold.  I cannot figure out any way to place button captions on multiple lines using the 4.0 UI button control, including setting the caption programmatically with a carriage return inserted between successive text lines.

  • Labview: TCp Open Issue!

    Hi Everyone,
I'm working on a MODBUS routine for communication with one of our control modules. I'm using NI's Modbus library to initiate a connection, check the registers, etc then report the results back to a teststand seq for fruther analysis.
Problem? I made a few minor adjustments to the library (just the main routine) because i only need to read the registers for now. However, when I conenct with the TCP Open Connection, nothing happens. Well, not completely true.. I sinffed the connection with Ethereal and I get the following errors...
    1)
    SENDING:
    TCP: Src Port 2061, Dst Port: 502, Seq: 13, Ack: 10 , Len:12
Checksum: 02x282d [incorrect, should be 0xfd6b]
    2)
    RECEIVING:
    Modbus/TCP:
-Modbus: Function 4: Read input registers. Exception: Illegal data address
exception code: Illegal data address (2).
I understand the second one and believe it's related to the first but ....?
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I'd go into the TCP OPEN.vi if I could, but it wont let me, so...?
    Thanks Again,
    BK

    Hi BK576,
Does this still give you problems if you don't make your modifications
to the MODBUS libraries? What changes were made? Could you possibly
submit an NI-Spy capture taken while seeing this error?

  • Can TestStand open, read, write and close binary files?

From a TestStand sequence, I need to open, read, write and close binary files. Does TestStand support this capability?

    Christine -
In the past I have used the C/C++ Adapter to call directly into the CVI RTE functions. The CVI functions I have used are OpenFile, WriteFile and CloseFile. The functions are exported from the DLL as CVI_OpenFile, CVI_WriteFile, and CVI_CloseFile. I just had to make sure that on termination of the sequence, that the integer handle was properly released by calling the close function.
If you are using LabVIEW, you could call directly into the low level VIs to do a similar set of operations.
