Lacie 160GB porsche drive won't take large files.

Slightly OT but...
I bought a 160GB lacie porsche drive for a client recently as he has a 90GB video project folder on my media drive, and i needed to free up space.
When i try to drag the folder from the media drive onto the external it gets to about 5GB's and packs up saying sorry you can't do this.
It cost me a hundred quid and i tried to take it back but they say its fine, i just need to use the supplied software. The Lacie manual specifically states i don't need the software installed but even with it installed i can't work out what's gong on.
They say i can return it but i'm only going to get 70% of it's value, having previously said, "just bring it back if you're not happy.
Naturally i'm not happy.
Any ideas how i get this thing to do what i bought it for?
All i want to do is drag a folder onto it FFS!
Thanks
Dom

Hi,
is your client using a Mac or a Windows PC ?
If Mac:
It sounds like the LaCie came preformated for use with Windows using the FAT32 file system (called MS-DOS in OSX Disk Utility).
FAT32 has a file size limitation for single files of 4GB.
Check with Disk Utility to see if I am assuming right.
If so, use Disk Utility to erase the LaCie HD and reformat it using 'Mac OS Extended (journaled)' as file system.
Be aware that doing this will erase everything that is on the LaCie right now !
If Windows PC:
Only choice for file system to go (no size limitation) is NTFS.
Sadly OSX can not write to NTFS volumes nor create them without third-party apps.
One solution is MacFuse http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/

  • Lacie external hard drive won't mount, seems dead. Caused by 10.5.6 update?

Hi all, a couple days after I updated Leopard to 10.5.6, my Lacie external drive no longer worked with TimeMachine. So I repaired permissions and ran Repair Disk from my original 10.3 Panther disk. Not sure if that was the cause, but afterward when the drive is connected by FireWire, it makes exciting new loud buzzing and grinding noises, and then I get an alert that reads "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Apple Disk Utility shows it as a Maxtor Calypso drive now with a capacity of 2TB, even though it's a 160GB (a FireWire only, Porsche model). I don't want to erase the disk and reformat it because I want the data.
Lacie customer support says the drive has suffered a "controller failure." Says Lacie, "The controller on the hard drive mechanism can not obtain the volume information on the hard drive and can not gain access. It is reading the control board information. You should be able to install a new hard drive mechanism in the enclosure and be ready to go again." Lacie CS continued to say DiskWarrior etc will not help.
Now I know that theoretically software updates shouldn't damage hardware, but I believe installing Leopard in the first place caused my lower RAM slot to fail. (That happened immediately after the upgrade.)
-So, does anyone think the 10.5.6 update could have caused this problem? Any fix ideas?
-If not, should I open the drive up and attempt to repair/replace this controller mechanism? If so, can anyone direct me to tutorials or instructions on how I could do that?
-Or, should I try putting it in the freezer overnight, as some online forums recommend as a last resort fix attempt for dead HDs?
I want the data, but not enough to pay for an expensive data recovery service.
    Thank you very, very much.
    scott

First off, software can not cause hardware to fail.
Lower RAM slot failure is a common issue not because of software issues, but rather because memory is unaware of bus slewing issues with energy saver power requirements. Secondly, the lower RAM slot of these machines was extremely hard to properly align the RAM right in the slot, making it easy to misplace the RAM during the installation process, thus short or damage teh slot. See my FAQ on bad RAM*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
You should be able to open the drive, and insert it inside another inexpensive hard drive case that is known to be compatible such as those by http://www.macsales.com/
Unfortunately, recently LaCie has had some hard drive interface converters which have not caught up with spec changes in the operating system, meaning their external drives sometimes need a firmware update. The only company that has been able to consistently avoid firmware updates is http://www.macsales.com/ This problem has plagued Firewire hard drives since the release of 10.3, and possibly earlier at as mentioned on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html
If inserting the drive in another case does not solve issues, Prosoft Data Rescue, Subrosasoft Filesalvage, or Boomerang's Boomerang and a second drive at least as large as the one to be recovered can sometimes extract information from a flakey hard drive. In event that doesn't work, then data recovery specialist is the only option.
In the future always backup your data and never let there be less than two copies of your data at anytime*:

  • Lacie 2Big Network Drive won't Accept a DHCP address from Time Capsule

    Good evening all.
I have 2 of these Lacie 2Big network drives. One accepts a DHCP address from my Time capsule and the other does not, giving itself a self assigned IP address instead. It does accept a manually assigned address though. The settings on both the Lacie drives are identical as far as I can tell and they both run the latest 2.0.6 software. I tried hard reset on the Time capsule, and swapping the ethernet cables over on the two Lacie drives but to no avail. The log on the drive that won't accept a DHCP address says it is timing out after 45 seconds and setting a self assigned address. The drive that won't accept DHCP is an older drive with software updated to 2.0.6, but it had the problem with the older software as well. Does anyone have a similar experience and / or solution ?
    regards
    Shaun

Also tried resetting PRAM, no luck.
What does work is if I use Manual DHCP mode and specify the router's address (192.168.0.1). Then everything works but not on Automatic, which worked for a long time.

  • Lacie 2big thunderbolt drive won't stay asleep

I am connecting a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt drive to a 15" Macbook Pro late 2013. When the computer sleeps, the drive spins down and then immediately spins back up again, on and on. The drive will not stay asleep, but constantly powers down and then back up, down and then back up, on and on. Ejecting the disk first has no effect. In an odd twist, if I connect the disk through the thunderbolt port on a lacie esata/thunderbolt adapter that has an esata drive also connected and powered on, then the disks will power down and stay down when the computer sleeps. If, however, there is not a powered on esata disk connected to the hub, then the lacie thunderbolt drive will not stay asleep.
I contacted Lacie technical support and they replied "The automatic shut-off feature is based off the drive detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port. If your computer, even when powered off, keeps a little current running through, the drive may not know it is supposed to shut off or on. "
Has anybody else had this problem or connected this drive and had it work properly?

I have two of the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt devices (I hesitate to call them 'drives' because each device has two disk drives in the enclosure) and when I put my MBP to sleep (which is seldom) the drives 'sleep' (no spinning sounds).
I'm not sure why your device would be "detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port" - unless that's something new in the Retina machines (which I don't have!).
If I were you, I would work your way up the tech chain of command at LaCie - I've owned their drives for decades and have always had good luck with their technical support, even if I had to notch it up a bit to get satisfactory results.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Network Drive Losing Connection During Large File Transfer...

    Hey, everyone.
Recently bought an Airport Extreme and LaCie USB HDD/Hub for my hybrid Windows/Mac home network. I formatted the drive with FAT32 as instructed, and hooked it up.
My first order of business was to back up all of my media on my Windows desktop machine, but it hasn't been working out so well. A short while after starting the 35+ gig transfer (a few minutes at most), I get an error message saying the the destination folder is no longer there. Sure enough, checking 'My Computer' shows that the drive is now a 'Disconnted Network Drive'.
Cycling power on everything and rebooting Windows restores the network drive, but the core problem remains.
Anyone else seen this and have any idea how to deal with it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi,
I'm having the same problem. Here's the relevant parts of my setup:
    Airport Extreme
HP printer and Western Digital "My Book" 500 G USB drive connected by 4/1 usb splitter
    MacBookPro connected via Gigabit
Windows XP PC connected via Gigabit
My media I loaded on the usb drive by directly connecting the usb to my PC, I've also loaded other iTunes media to the usb drive from the mac book. If I point iTunes on the PC at the usb drive I can play the media just fine. When I try to copy large files (700 MB) from my PC to the usb drive (via the airport) I'm told the destination folder isn't there. I've also noticed the windows tooltips telling me that it lost the internet connection, and if I have the airport utility open on my mac it also looses the airport for a few seconds. I am able to copy small files (largest that's worked so far is 1.6 MB) the usb drive via the airport.

  • External hard drive won't accept certain files from Itunes

I hooked up a Lacie External Hard drive, I am dragging songs from my Itunes onto my lacie external hard drive. I'm doing this for backup and storage purposes. Everything was going well until The external hard drive started to randomly not "see" some files. I would drag the file over the folder I had created on the Ex. hard Drive, and it recognizes it, but when I release the mouse button to drop it in the folder...It doesn't "land" in the folder. Is it a problem with my mac or the external hard drive? Is there a setting I don't know about?

some of the music from iTunes are protected files (.m4p), especially if they are ones you bought from Apple Music Store, there is in my experience DRM that basically says they cant be copied to other locations like to a CDR or external HD. Apple's way to protecting against music piracy.
A while back I decided to move my collection to my external and its worked great ever since.
thats the way I do it for my machine.
I have a 40GB external Fw400 HD with my mp3 collection on it.
I set up iTunes to see that drive as its home spot.

  • UTL_FILE.get_line won't read large files ?

I am trying to read a large fixed length flat file. If I cut the file down to really small it will read it but it reads it as a single line. If I try to read a larger file > 32k I get a READ_ERROR. I am pretty sure it has to do with the end of line marker but I saw nothing about that in the UTL_FILE documentation. This is on UNIX, new line character after each record in the file. Standard unix flat file.
Any ideas on what to do?

  • Compressor won't compress large files from QT X Screen cap

all of my large screen capture files give a "Quicktime error: -36" when I try to transcode them in Compressor. Small ones work fine. Trimming one large file into two smaller ones makes no difference; the second of the two still fails. Ideas please..?

    Need more info:
What compression settings are you using?

Probably a stupid newbie mistake, but can anyone tell me what it is?

  • Exchange account won't send large file, switches servers

When I try to send a large file through my company's Exchange account, it fails - a window pops up and says
"Cannot send message using the server XXX (Exchange)
The Exchange connection to server XXXXXX failed."
then it gives me other servers to try, including the exchange one.
Mail.app also seems to be trying to switch the outgoing mail from my Exchange account to my personal (Gmail) account - the Outbox entry is for "On My Mac", not for my "Work" account.
Mind you, I received this file from my someone else at my company, so they could send it fine - it's not an Exchange size limit issue.  Other smaller mail I send on the Exchange account works fine.
    Any suggestions?

    Try this:
    1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    2. In Network, select Built-In Ethernet, select Advanced and then on the Ethernet tab, configure the following settings
    Configure: Manually
    MTU: Custom, 1492
    3. Then try to send an email message that contains an attachment.

  • Optical Disc Drive won't take discs

I took my Macbook into the Apple Store last week, because the processor failed. I just got it back from being repaired yesterday, and all seemed fine when I wanted to play The Sims 3 this evening and my macbook wouldn't even take the disc when I tried to put it in. It just sits there about most of the way in, and when I try to push the rest it in, there's no noises and nothing grabbing it, just sort of a spring trying to push it back out to me.
Did someone forget to put something back when they repaired it? Because it was working just fine before. I've tried SMC and PRAM resets, nothing. Does this mean I have to make another trip to the Apple Store?

Try holding down the eject button while booting up the computer.
Once it has booted up fully try inserting a disc again.
If this doesn't resolve it, and you have tried an SMC reset, and the other steps outlined at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801 under the "drive doesn't accpet discs" sub-heading, then take it back to trhe dealer.
    Cheers

  • Disc Drive won't take any disc

I have a new MacBook Pro computer, its only a few months old. I have only used the disc drive once and it worked great! I tried using it again and it won't work at all now. It won't feed the disc into the computer. What can I do?

I'm not trying to sound condescending but have you tried pushing the disc in almost all the way? If so, try a reboot of the computer and give it another try. Still no luck? Try running the apple hardware test to see if it says there are any hardware issues.

  • Disc Drive won't take DVD+RW

I want to free up some of the space on my macbook, so I'm trying to put some of my photos on a DVD+RW. The Brand is Memorex. At the top it says "rewritable-4X-4.7GB-120min".
When I put the disc in the drive, it makes all the usual noises, and sounds as though it is acting quite normally, but then it spits the disc back out. There is no error message or warning or explanation of any kind. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Is it just that the macbook disc drive isn't compatible with DVD+RW discs?

This is what it says. I presume it means I can read them, but I can't write them? Is there any kind of upgrade I can do that would allow me to burn DVD+RWs?

    Hi Michael,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't advise trying to fix this yourself. If it is still in warranty especially. Let an Apple Tech work with it to see what the problem is. The CD drive has become more complex with the slot drive. I would hate for you to void your warranty because you tried to fix it.

  • LaCie 160GB USB drive

    Hi Guys
Just a quick question - I bought this at the store with my Mac as it was on offer (but didn't check whether it was firewire... oops!)
Wanted to ask whether I can back up from this the same way, and with the same ease as I would a FW drive? I ask as I want to upgrade the HD soon to whatever the largest available is, and I want to make sure that I can use SuperDuper to boot ok from this external drive and clone to the new drive.
I've been backing up without any issues.
Will this be ok for what I want it for?
    Cheers!

Thanks mate - just the reassurance I needed! Would hate to have been backing up religiously each week (and taking an hour each time as I'm yet to buy the full SuperDuper version!) only for it to be pointless when I upgrade drives.
