LaCie 4big Quadra not showing

I bought a LaCie 4 big Quadra and a LaCie Sata II PCI express card.
Downloaded last driver for the card.
Put in the card, connected the Big Quadra.
But The Big Quadra does not show on the desktop.
When I check in Systemprofile, i can see the new sata ports in the sata section, but they seem to have no drive connected.
And when I check in the PCI section, there the Sata PCI E card doesn't show.
I am at a loss here...

I've been having an ongoing discussion with LaCie about this issue since August 2009. None of my LaCIe raid drives connected via eSata will mount with the computer is started. We have to manually hook the drives up with the esata cable AFTER the computer is started. AND DON'T FORGET TO DISCONNECT THE DRIVES before the computer goes to sleep, or they will crash finder and you do a forced power down on your machine. Fun, I know.

  • LaCie 4big Quadra & TC

I've just purchased a LaCie 4big Quadra 4TB Raid Array. It's setup for RAID 5 & connected to my TC via USB 2.0. The array is formatted HFS+, it is a hard RAID and shows up in the Airport Utility as a single drive.
When I try to change my time machine disk to the new disk, it is not displayed. Also, the drive does not show up on the Network.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated...
    Thanks,
    Marc

    Re-Formatted again and it worked.

  • Lacie 4big Quadra upgrade

I have a Lacie 4big Quadra 12TB external drive connected to a Macpro server as a backup drive connected via FW800 but I'm out of space.
Lacie now do the same drive but with a 16TB capacity but rather than buy a complete new unit I was wondering if anyone had replaced the drives in one of these units for larger drives, either Lacie drives or for instance 4TB seagate drives.
Ideally I would like the 20TB thunderbolt version but as I cant get a thunderbolt card for the MacPro that's out of the question.
Another option is a different manufacturer  but the drive needs 16TB minimum, raid 5, be swappable & connect via either USB 2 or Firewire 800 but not a NAS.
    Thanks

Why aren't you looking into SATA PCIe? Forget using USB2 definitely not and not for RAID5.
Maybe look to Mavericks which has improved its software RAID support (though it is nine-dot-zero so maybe not today).

  • Lacie 4Big Quadra | eSATA Card Needed for 2008 Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro (2008) and have just bought a Lacie 4Big Quadra. I need an eSATA card to take advantage of the faster transfer rates. I'll be using the drive in RAID 1 as part of a backup solution.
Can anyone recommend an affordable eSATA card which will work without succombing to the many warnings posted here and elsewhere?
Any help would be much appreciated. :)
    Kind regards, Richard

Well, you didn't define what is considered 'affordable' so here's my answer: OWC deals in reliable products that in my experience work well with Macs.

  • My Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive does not show connection speed

    *My Concern*
Hi I have a Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive, which although works fine is not showing its connection, shows up in the system profiler as 'Connection Speed Unknown'. -Should I be worried? I have other drives connected to my G5 Dual 2 gig machine and no problem their they all show their connection speeds.
*Other Firewire 'Unknown Speed connection' related Problem*
I had a DVD LaCie Dual layer portable Firewire drive which recently suffered from the same problem and I had to send it back. This was due to it slowly developing a fault of not being able to burn dual layer disks properly.
*What I have done to try and remedy the situation.*
I have been able to do the following but I am afraid with no change in the system Profiler;-
1 Trashed the whole system and rebuild
    2 repair my permissions
3 empty out all my caches with OnyX (third party app) version 1.8.5
4 Disconnected all drives and reconnected them one by one to see if there are any anomalies within the system
5 switched my G5 off removed the plug from the wall waited 30 sec for it to reset itself this was the 1st attempt. On my 2nd attempt I then cold booted the machine and reset Pram settings
6 used Tech Tools Pro 4 version 4.1.2
    7. Replaced Power supply of the offending unit (didn't have to but I wanted to be safe and eliminate this fronm the equation.
9.tried changing around the order in the chain to which the drives were connected to the G5but alas no joy!
    Summery
So my concern is if a device which is Firewire shows up in the system profiler as connection speed unknown should I begin to worry even though it appears to be functioning.
Thank you ahead of time for any help on this matter
    *Supporting evidence*
Please see below a shot of my System profiler so you can see what I mean:-
    *(Important Note)*
The Lacie Big disk has 800/400 Firewire connection speeds I have connected it straight to my G5s firewire 800 port then daisy chained the LaCie's via its other 800 port to the two other 800 Firewire Hard drives.
When the LaCie DVD DL drive was connected, I connected it straight to the 400 firewire port. As it needed direct access to the G5 for it to function optimally.

Hi BDAqua - thanks a lot for replying - really appreciate your help. I was using Time machine to back up on the old lacie drives that I have - I just backed up on both lacies and they backed up faster for some reason but that might have been because they were very small back ups as I did full back ups on Tuesday night - this is the info under the USB section > hardware > about my mac - it didn't show the speed like the example you gave me though but it still backed none the less  :

I also got a reply back from WD on the hard drive and they said the following - exactly the same as you about it being a problem with the power supplied hence why the disk won't mount - so you were spot on - so I'm thinking I should go ahead and get the newertech 7 USB port 4 amps as you suggested - let me know what you think and then I'll just order it - and thank you - really do appreciate your help on this - thanks Jayas
    Dear Jayas
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is James.
If the drive is working fine on one system but failing on another especially with the "clicking" sound this is an issue with the system not being able to supply enough power to power the device.
These devices require power from the machine to make them operate if there isn't enough power supplied the drive will fail to work. This is why you are having no issues with one system but are on another.

Two external hard drive are not appearing on the desktop anymore on my 2008 24" iMac. One is a Lacie d2 Quadra and the other is a G Drive. Both are 1 Tb

Are they daisy chained? Have you tried them one at a time? Have you tried a different FireWire cable? Do they show up in either system profiler or Disk Utility? Have you reset the SMC? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • My Lacie hard drive back up is not showing up and light is  flickering

My back up hard drive is not showing up when i plug in the USB to my Macbook Air so won't back up. The light on the hard drive is flickering. CAn you please help?

A: does it show up in disk utility?
B: try a different USB port.
C: If no go, try a different Mac.
D: If still not recognized then its about 90% likely the SATA bridge card inside the USB enclosure is bad....NOT the Hard Drive itself, but the SATA bridge card attached to same.
Is your Lacie  a conventional HD or a SSD?      (LaCie does NOT make hard drives, internal conventional HD are Seagate inside a LaCie)
    If its a conventional HD
A replacement HD enclosure will solve same, ($15 ebay).   The Sata card removes from the HD very easily, like LEGOs attached together come apart.
Verify A thru D first before doing anything.
likely bad part pictured below, the SATA card,  ... as seen INSIDE a USB external HD

  • LaCie Mini not showing up as available for TM

I have been using a LaCie Mini 500 gb drive as my time machine drive for a 6 months. Now it does not detect the drive properly when I plug it into my computer. It was recognizing it yesterday, but it would become available during the backup. Today it is not recognizing it at all, meaning it does not show up in finder.
    Please help.

See if you can repair it, via #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If it doesn't appear in Disk Utility's sidebar, be sure all connections are tight and secure; try other ports and cables.
If it has it's own power supply, be sure it's plugged in to a known good outlet. While it's plugged-in, hold it to your ear. They've had a "run" of bad power supplies, and apparently the bad ones make some noise. One poster described it as a "squishing" noise, whatever that is. If so, contact LaCie.
If all else fails, the drive has probably failed but at 6 months old, it should be covered by warranty . Contact your retailer or LaCie.

  • Finder no longer detects a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive

I have a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive that is connected with firewire 400 to my Macbook Pro. It will not show in Finder or the desktop.
It constantly in running because I can hear the clicking sound coming from it and it runs all the time. I cannot see it on my Mac.

Yes, you have to format it with Disk utility - that is what it is for. So it seems you did that correctly - check back to make sure that it is the GUID partition scheme.
Do you have any LaCie software installed? Your drive needs nothing on it to work. First, try to just restart your computer - that may work (after ejecting and unplugging the drive). If it doesn't, plug it back in and you might want to try to run through it again (use partition this time > one or more partitions).

  • External HD (Lacie d2 Quadra 500GB) random disconnects

    Hi!
I have a problem with my external HD (Lacie d2 Quadra 500GB). The problem occurs since the 10.6 upgrade. My external HD is disconnected every few minutes. Sometimes I only see one partition, but most of the time both partitions (one of them is my Time Machine partition) are being disconnected by OSX. I read that some Western Digital drives get disconnected, too. But as far as I know my drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 HD.
    Any solutions?
I can plug it out of the USB2 port and back in again. It will appear for a few minutes and after that the next "Drive disconnected" message comes up (sometimes the message does not show, too!).
    I would appreciate any help!
    Thank you,
    Markus

I have the same problem with an external SimpleTech portable HD direct-wired via USB. My drive is strictly used to hold music and photo files. The problem has started since upgrade to Snow Leopard.
It disconnects every few minutes and has to be unplugged and plugged back in again to my MBP to get it to reconnect. Sometimes the "Drive disconnected" error message comes up, sometimes it doesn't. When I plug it back in sometimes it doesn't get recognized and I have to repeat the procedure. The time it takes to become recognized, when it is, is much slower than before upgrading to Snow Leopard.

  • D2 Quadra not mounting via FW 800

Just purchased a 500 GB La Cie Quadra, as I wanted the faster speed of the FW 800.
(it has FW 400,USB, ans ESATA as options as well). It does not show up on my desk-top. Nor in Disc Utility.
I tried restarting, powered on, off, restarting again, and nothing gets the drive to mount.
The only support that La Cie's website has is a "La Cie Update Toll from May 2007, that does not even reference Leopard, only 10.4.
I finally got it to mount by using the 400 cable.
    Anyone else have this problem?

LaCie Firewire - I appreciate your willingness to help, but I think that we've moved beyond the fixes initially proposed by lacie / apple. While I wish changing cables would have helped me, this was not the case for me, and I suspect that it is not for Chandlerjam either.
Mr. Mertes - I'm glad that you got your system working, although personally, reformatting the drive was unacceptable as the drive appeared fine to other computers and via other connections, and as such was unwilling to sacrifice the data stored on the drive.
Chandlerjam - the firmware password is not on by default. If you have turned it on (which I recently did, and turned off to get my firewire 800 back) and would like to turn it off, go to the firmware password utility located in the utilities folder (inside the applications folder) of the install disc that came with your computer. After a restart, the firmware password can be disabled. I am not sure why this caused a problem with my system, but after turning this password back off I have had no problems with this drive via FW800. It may have something to do with the format of my drive, but I did not want to reformat to try to get this working. If your drive is empty, it may be worth trying to reformat as GUID per Mr. Mertes' suggestion.
With respect to your question about fw800 / 400, for time machine, you might not notice a difference after the first backup. FW800 is technically twice as fast, but because time machine works in the background you might not notice the difference in speed. the first time you backup, you would certainly have a quicker backup via 800, but due to the incremental nature of time machine's backups you may not notice a difference later. If all else fails, this likely is not a bad solution, and it's entirely possible that future patches (ie, 10.5.1) might fix this problem.
    Best of luck! mike.

  • Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if I upgrade to Lion and then restore from the external drive?

I ordered the disk to update to Snow Leopard.  Did that so I could get the App Store.  Did that so I could download Lion.   After I installed Lion my MacBook is super sluggish.  Takes like 6 seconds just to open a drop-down menu in Finder.
I have been backing up. Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if wipe my drive using the USB Lion OS stick (which I think I'll have to buy even though I downloaded the new OS online)?  I have been plugging my laptop into the Lacie drive set on "auto" and it's been working great.
One Genius said yes "you will get everything back" but my Mac buddy says "say goodbye to most of your apps".  Then a guy at the university I asked "do you have a disk image". And I said "what the **** is a disk image?".
Is the problem that I installed an OS on top of new OS without wiping the drive?  Or, is my MacBook Pro too old? Do I need to buy a new one?

    Any help?

SA will indeed transfer accounts, files and apps at first start. Can do so even faster if you clone the internal HDD onto the external (just split into a partition large enough to contain it) and then use it as the source. Probably faster than Time Machine too. The safest and quickest way to do a disk image or clone is using CarbonCopyCloner (free), and it will preserve the Lion Recovery Partition too.
Since you'll have to re--download the Lion installer again, note that you can concoct your very own Lion Installer USB Stick with it prior to reinstalling and not have to pay for the Apple-branded version. See Kappy's tutorial: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3786371?tstart=0
As for the sluggishness, I believe that a great part of the cause is that you only have 2GB RAM. Don't know if your Mac can take more but try at least to get to 4GB, if not 8GB. Should attempt this before  messing with the reinstall, as this may get you what you want.

  • ATV not showing in iTunes devices

Just bought my friends ATV - was working ok with his sysytem - he has done a factory restore - to V1 - i have updated to V
When I select iTunes/Preferences/Devices the ATV is not shown.
I am connected by ethernet and have also setup to connect to my Airport extreme based network - the network is recognised and i can connect to my iTunes account and i can access movie trailers, podcasts etc.
I currently stream music to 2 Airport Express's with no problems.
The ATV showsup in the 'remote speakers dialogue in iTunes.
1 of my iTunes playlists shows up on the ATV with 0songs!
Whilst streaming from the iMac i have been able to get the current track playing displayed on my TV - i don't no how?
I have run a further factory restore and upgraded gain to v3
I have run the Diagnostic test - the ATV is working normal.
I have tried to access the ATV from my other iMac - G4800MHZ does not show up.
I am using Itunes 9.02 on an iMac IntelCore Duo 2.16ghz with 10.5.8 my iTunes library is held on a Lacie USB drive.
I have tried connecting the ATV direct to the iMac's ethernet port - still does not show-up in iTunes.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks for your response,
I can now understand that my ethernet cable is wrong - but why cannot i connect via the Airport Network - clearly the iMac can See the ATV - it shows up in 'Remote Speakers".
Regarding the ports, i see the article says...
These are well-known ports used by Apple products, like iTunes. If you can use all the features of iTunes, these ports are likely already open on your firewall or NAT router.
... everything else in iTunes works OK.
But how would i go about checking that each port is open etc
I am using a netgear router.
Incidently, i have also downloaded iTunes to a Win7 laptop and still iTunes does not show?

Why are you repeating yourself? That's unnecessary and disconcerting. As for your LaCie issue, return it and get one from a manufacturer that is responsive and makes things that work. FWIW, I never use USB HDs. They're slow when compared to FireWire ones. I roll my own and never have issues. These are the latest combos:
