Lacie Big Disk BIG ERROR (-9972)

Below is the definition for the issue I'm having on my G4. I've used disk Utility, Drive Genius and Disk Warrior. None of them could fix the issue. The solution below states that I should "back Up" the disk and start fresh. Here's the problem: How I access files on a drive won't allow me to see what's on it?
Any help will do.
Much Thanks.
~MF
Symptoms
In rare circumstances, Disk Utility may display the following message when you try to verify or repair a disk:
"The underlying task reported failure"
The Disk Utility log will also display a -9972 error code. This indicates that your disk volume has issues that Disk Utility cannot fix.
Products Affected
Disk Utility, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Illustrator CS2
Resolution
What can I do?
If you experience this rare occurrence, you should attempt to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Try using fsck in single user mode, or start up your computer from a different volume before verifying or repairing.
Back up as much of your important data and files as you can, then try using a third-party disk utility to repair the drive. Be sure that you use one that works with your version of Mac OS X.
Back up as much of your important data and files as you can, then perform an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X on the affected volume.
Important: This option completely erases the destination volume and then installs a new copy of Mac OS X. You should always backup important files on the target volume before performing an Erase and Install installation. You can then restore your backed up files afterwards.

If you have tried to do what you can using Disk Utility (while booted to a CD) and Disk Warrior, try using a data retrieval program to capture your data from the drive before re-initializing it, such as -
Data Rescue
Virtual Lab
Both of those have trial versions available for download; either may have restrictions re what versions of OSX they support.

  • Disk Utility error -9972 with new external hard disks

    My Powerbook 15" (1.67MHz, 1.5 GB RAM, 100GB drive) is partitioned into two volumes:
    - OS-X 10.3.9
    - OS-X 10.4.3
    Each volume has its own Disk Utility:
    - Disk Utility 10.4.4 v.145.7 (part of OS-X 10.3.9)
    - Disk Utility 10.5.3 v.198.5 (part of OS-X 10.4.3)
    In order to make backups I use an external hard disk enclosure:
    - Macally PHR-100AC, firewire + USB2
    Recently I bought two new 250 GB hard disks and built one of them into the external enclosure (jumper setting to master) and connected it with firewire and formatted the drive as Extended Journaled. After that I made Verify Disk and got bad error messages and could not repair the disk.
    Funny thing (reproduceable):
    Using Disk Utility in OS-X 10.3.9 and formatting as Extended without Journaled: NO errors
    Using Disk Utility in OS-X 10.3.9 and formatting as Extended Journaled: volume bitmap errors
    Using Disk Utility in OS-X 10.4.3 and formatting as Extended without Journaled: bad errors
    Using Disk Utility in OS-X 10.4.3 and formatting as Extended Journaled: bad errors
    Using Disk Utility in OS-X 10.4.3 and formatting as Extended without Journaled and verifying using OS-X 10.3.9: bad errors
    Bad error messages:
    - incorrect key length
    - the underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
    - stopped repairing ... volume could not be repaired
    I tried:
    - to build the second new hard disk into the enclosure: same errors
    - to install new firmware 4.73 into enclosure (compatible to 10.3.9): same errors
    - zeroing out all data: same errors
    - to use Techtool Pro 4.0.6 (compatible to 10.4): same errors
    - to restart the mac using both partitions: different errors as described above
    - to disconnect, shut down, restart the external enclosure: same errors
    - to use another firewire cable: same errors
    - to format the external disk again and again: same errors
    - to find any discussion or knowledge base or faq: nothing
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Your post on -9972 was very helpful. Thank you.
    In the meantime I bought another enclosure (Macally PHC-500BC) and installed the same firmware 4.73 and tried to use it.
    Surprise, surprise! Everything is ok with no errors. All my hard disks are working perfectly.
    I suppose my 100AC is a faulty enclosure and needs replacement.
    Thanks for your help.

  • ITunes and LaCie Big Ethernet Disk -- Media Server

    I have LaCie Big Ethernet Disk (1TB). The drive has a feature called Media Server, you setup a directory copy over your music, photos, and videos. The drive shares your music via UPaP, it shows up in iTunes as a shared music directory. The problem I'm having is I see the drive in iTunes under SHARED, but none of the music files are listed. My files are mixture of MP3, AAC and Apple Music Store Files. So far I've tried these things:
    - toggling the shared checkbox on and off - no luck.
    - Created a new iTunes Library - no luck.
    - Created a new share directory on the drive - no luck.
    I've contacted LaCie tech support which were not very helpful. They think its an iTunes problem. Does anyone have any suggestions, things to try, anything?
    Thanks - CH

    The protocol itunes uses for it's shared libraries is daap, I believe. Depending on how large your library is, it may take quite a while for the server to index the library you are trying to share. It also may choke on files with unconventional characters in their names or for other reasons. my best advice to you would be to try sharing a different folder containing a few music files and see if you can get that to work. Once you know it works correctly you can start checking to see if there are certain files that are causing it to fail, or if your just not waiting long enough for the server to index your music folder.

  • LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ Triple 2TB

    I am thinking of getting a LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ Triple 2TB for use with Final Cut Express. This drive is actually 2 1-TB disks. Is there any problem using such a drive in capturing video (or anything else having to do with video editing/production)? Thanks in advance.

    Do you use them for capturing and editing video?
    Yes I do.

  • Warning - itunes 7  and lacie Big Disk

    At poresent I am attempting to re build my Lacie 500Gb hard drive because itunes 7 has crashed it, please be careful if you have wav files on a lacie big disk
    Disk utility does not work to repair the drive, tech tools has recommended using file recovery, what a wonderful way to spend a Friday evening, not listening to music but finding it
    Oh and if anyone from the itunes team is reading this and I certainly hope there is, please be aware that if I lose my 500+ strong CD collection from my Big Disk, I will be asking them to send the person responsible for saying this product was safe for public consumption to come to Australia and sit in front of my mini and re rip every single CD one after another. Then they can rebuild the playiists that I so anally created, then they should be made to go and apologise to every single person in the world that their shoddy decision has effected
    What a fantastic start to the weekend, thanks itunes, next time wait until it's ready

    Mac Mini 1.25Ghz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1GB DDR SD DRAM, Migli Mini TV, Lacie Big Disk

    I have recently "upgraded" to iTunes 7 myself. I use my old PB 17" as a music server (since work bought me a new 15" MacBook Pro), and . . . uh oh . . . I have my iTunes library on a LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme.
    Perusing through the forums, it would seem that a lot of folks have trouble with the new iTunes and external drives, not just LaCie.
    iTunes 7 corrupted the directory of the LaCie disk to the point at which I couldn't even mount the disk, and Disk Utility couldn't help me. It was really strange. The first time I ran iTunes 7, it did that whole gapless-playback scan (whatever the heck that is) and then could find none of the songs (it asked me on each song if I'd like to locate the original?). Then, I quit iTunes and couldn't open the LaCie drive icon on the desktop. So, I rebooted, and the LaCie drive wouldn't even mount.
    The latest version of DiskWarrior (3.0.3), however, recognized the drive and rebuilt the directory and, I am happy to report, with the rebuilt directory ALL my music works and iTunes 7 seems to work like a charm.
    It's a little frustrating that Apple released such a problematic product, BUT, I guess they can't try every possible hardware combination. iTunes and an external hard drive, though, would seem to be pretty common.
    Talltexan, have you got the latest DiskWarrior?

  • Trouble with LaCie Big Disk?

    I saw on an archived topic that some others had problems with this 500g LaCie Big Disk. I was curious if there was anyone out there who was having the same problems I am.
    The Drive will just periodically shut off for no reason whatever. It's not in use, or anything, it's just sitting there being on, and I get the warning that I've disconnected the drive and don't ever do that, etc.
    I informed LaCie about this. I was out of warranty, and they just sent me a new one and it just did the same thing.
    Anyone else having problems like this???
    If so, was it resolved??

    Thanks so much for the reply -- a good thought - the drive actually can be connected firewire 800, fw400, or usb, and I'm getting the same symptoms when connected with any of them

  • LaCie Big Disk Warning signs... Should I ditch?

    Hi all,
    First, want to quickly apologize for not doing a thorough read of all the posts regarding LaCie drives - the problem is that there are so many of them. People apparently are having all kinds of LaCie nightmares, and it would take me forever to read through everything. So here's my issue.
    I have 3 LaCie Big Disk Extremes (d2), in three flavors. One 500 G, one 600 G, and 1 TB, each daisy-chained via FW 800 to the FW800 port on my G5 (Dual 2.5 GHz). All three have - until now - been acting just fine, but I just captured a few full HDV tapes to the 1 TB and I have had playback issues that just don't seem to go away. I'll play a few seconds, even at random points of the video, and it will freeze with the spinning beach ball of death.
    At first I thought it was software issue, so I reinstalled QT, trashed preferences in FCP, but it all kept coming back to the same problem.
    Now, here's the weird thing - when I copy the same video from my 1 TB to one of my other LaCies (which are actually further down the daisychain), the video plays fine, with no stuttering or freezing.
    Now reading all of the LaCie posts is freaking me out a tad - is this some kind of warning sign that my 1 TB drive is heading down a dark path?
    Is there some way I can fix it by either wiping it or attempting to see about fixing hardware?
    And finally, is daisychaining all of these drives on the same FW 800 bus recommended, or is there a better solution (that won't break the bank)?
    Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks guys!
    Dan
    (P.S. Any suggestions on other drive brands? A client just bought a Western Digital MyBook 1 TB, and it seems to be working great, but I'm open to suggestions).

    Yes it is true that people report lods of problems with Lacie drives and there are many reasons for that.
    Even the power supply is considered dangerousely unreliable.
    Another thing is that drives can fail indeed at some point. If you can play the footage from some of your other drives then the 1TB might have some issues (power supply or other is difficult to say). Best would be backing up your media and if you can then run Disk Warrior http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    Good and not massively expensive drives, should you want new ones, are G-tech and Caldigit (links below). You could RAID a few drives (RAID 0 for example for quicker workflow), however, choice depends on several factors: what format you will be working on in the future, if you want to upgrade to eSATA at some stage, etc. Use the search tool of the forum or google for hints:

    Personally I would NOT go for WD. Not really designed for editing.

  • My Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive does not show connection speed

    *My Concern*
    Hi I have a Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive, which although works fine is not showing its connection, shows up in the system profiler as 'Connection Speed Unknown'. -Should I be worried? I have other drives connected to my G5 Dual 2 gig machine and no problem their they all show their connection speeds.
    *Other Firewire 'Unknown Speed connection' related Problem*
    I had a DVD LaCie Dual layer portable Firewire drive which recently suffered from the same problem and I had to send it back. This was due to it slowly developing a fault of not being able to burn dual layer disks properly.
    *What I have done to try and remedy the situation.*
    I have been able to do the following but I am afraid with no change in the system Profiler;-
    1 Trashed the whole system and rebuild
    2 repair my permissions
    3 empty out all my caches with OnyX (third party app) version 1.8.5
    4 Disconnected all drives and reconnected them one by one to see if there are any anomalies within the system
    5 switched my G5 off removed the plug from the wall waited 30 sec for it to reset itself this was the 1st attempt. On my 2nd attempt I then cold booted the machine and reset Pram settings
    6 used Tech Tools Pro 4 version 4.1.2
    7. Replaced Power supply of the offending unit (didn't have to but I wanted to be safe and eliminate this fronm the equation.
    9.tried changing around the order in the chain to which the drives were connected to the G5but alas no joy!
    Summery
    So my concern is if a device which is Firewire shows up in the system profiler as connection speed unknown should I begin to worry even though it appears to be functioning.
    Thank you ahead of time for any help on this matter
    *Supporting evidence*
    Please see below a shot of my System profiler so you can see what I mean:-
    *(Important Note)*
    The Lacie Big disk has 800/400 Firewire connection speeds I have connected it straight to my G5s firewire 800 port then daisy chained the LaCie's via its other 800 port to the two other 800 Firewire Hard drives.
    When the LaCie DVD DL drive was connected, I connected it straight to the 400 firewire port. As it needed direct access to the G5 for it to function optimally.

    Hi BDAqua - thanks a lot for replying - really appreciate your help. I was using Time machine to back up on the old lacie drives that I have - I just backed up on both lacies and they backed up faster for some reason but that might have been because they were very small back ups as I did full back ups on Tuesday night - this is the info under the USB section > hardware > about my mac - it didn't show the speed like the example you gave me though but it still backed none the less  :

    Dear Jayas
    Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is James.
    If the drive is working fine on one system but failing on another especially with the "clicking" sound this is an issue with the system not being able to supply enough power to power the device.
    These devices require power from the machine to make them operate if there isn't enough power supplied the drive will fail to work. This is why you are having no issues with one system but are on another.

    i am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??

    You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

  • Failure to access iPhoto after back up / LaCie Little Disk / Error : 10657

    Hello,
    I recently bought a 320GB LaCie Little Disk external HD. After backing up via TM I try and access iPhoto via HD and get the message "Error code: 10657. The operation couldn't be completed".
    Can anyone pls help me?

    Hi there,
    No, what I mean is when I connect up my external HD back up to MacBook, I cannot access any of my photos and none of my "applications".
    again, how are you accessing them? you are NOT supposed to access TM backups in ANY way directly. if you want to use something from a backup you need to restore it using TM interface to your main drive. then use the restored item on the main drive. to restore something from backup you click on TM in the dock, scroll back in time, select what you want to restore and hit "restore".
    I'm not sure how you are supposed to view one's backed up photos on external HD, but I've tried via:
    Latest backup/ applications/iPhoto
    and
    Latest backup / Library (and iPhoto doesn't even come up in Library)
    you are doing it wrong which is why you are getting the error.
    I've called Apple technical support but unfort they can't help as I bought MacBook over 90 days ago!
    Sorry to be a nuisance - do you think it could be something to do with the security settings?
    Thank you, GF

  • Disk Utility unable to verify disk (Error -9972)

    Please help! I downloaded the Security Update 2007-004 and my comp crashed! When I turn my computer on I get a folder icon in the middle of the screen and it won't start.
    I tried using Disk 1 to get to my harddrive. I got to Disk Utility and tried to verify disk. But I got the following message.
    Invalid B-tree node size.
    Volume check failed.
    Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. (-9972)
    So I can't verify and therefore can't repair my disk. I need my computer for my school assignment. Please please help.

    Welcome To Discussions jo*!
    Do you know what size the Hard Drive is, and how much space is available?
    Although that error is not exactly good news, it is not necessarily a death knell.
    DiskWarrior, does indeed, have a high success rate at rebuilding when Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume (Error -9972).
    In the above link it states;
    *Back up as much of your important data and files as you can, then try using a third-party disk utility to repair the drive. Be sure that you use one that works with your version of Mac OS X."
    DiskWarrior, also linked above, is just such a third-party utility.
    But just in case it is unsuccessful, and you need to perform an Erase & Install, I suggest that if possible, you back up the system, or at least any data that you cannot afford to lose.
    If you have access to another Mac that is Firewire enabled, you might be able to backup, or retrieve data, using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
    Good Luck!

  • Lacie @big raid sytem

    I installed a LAcie @big Raid with a pci express controller.
    When i copy files all goes well. But when I use the LAcie as an scratchdisk in final cut pro or adobe cs2 photoshop, the systems hangs and i have to restart the machine.
    Are the pci slots of the macpro different? Has there been changes to the pci express protocol?
    Who Knows?
    power mac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    You might start by saying which vendor make PCIe, and
    yes there are differences.
    The vendor of the chipset is silicon image but the drivers are probably modified by Lacie. But they dont now the answer to the problem.
    What are the differences then?

  • Code to big error

    I am writing a program and I receive a "code to large" error. What does this mean? My code for the program is only 20,000 lines I have other programs that are larger and before this I have never seen this error. It is only in one portion of my program in a class that extends a JPanel. When I eliminate the code I just added and add more code in another portion of the program I do not receive this error. Is there a code length maximum that is only allowed in one class and if there is how can I extend that length to a desired length. I am sure people write some extensive programs in Java and I find it hard to believe I have already reached a code to big error only after 20,000 lines of code. If there is anybody who can help me out that would be great. I need to add a section of code to my program to make it work but I can not due to the preceding error message.

    There are no hard and fast rules for the max size
    your file should reach. It depends a lot on what it's
    doing, how much you comment, etc.Not that it matters much, but there are some hard limits on the size of a .class
    file; I ripped this from the VM spec:4.1 The ClassFile Structure
    A class file consists of a single ClassFile structure:
        ClassFile {
             u4 magic;
             u2 minor_version;
             u2 major_version;
             u2 constant_pool_count;
             cp_info constant_pool[constant_pool_count-1];
             u2 access_flags;
             u2 this_class;
             u2 super_class;
             u2 interfaces_count;
             u2 interfaces[interfaces_count];
             u2 fields_count;
             field_info fields[fields_count];
             u2 methods_count;
             method_info methods[methods_count];
             u2 attributes_count;
             attribute_info attributes[attributes_count];
        }As you can see, no more than 64K different constants are allowed, no more than
    64K implemented interfaces, no more than 64K fields and no more than 64K
    methods per class. But even with 20,000 lines of code shudder, you won't
    meet this limits ;-)

    You are asking for 8*23000*20000 bytes /1024/1024 = 3509.52 megabytes = 3.43 gigabytes.
    You are declaring this much allocation locally via
    automatic array in your example. You'll have to define a stack this size (hardly practical).
    If you ask for this much memory with malloc() which is a much better idea, you'll still need to have enough swap.
    You can also do mmap(...,MAP_NORESERVE,...) in which case you may not even need the swap to support it.
    It all depends on what you are doing and why.

  • Lacie Ethernet Disk

    Hi
    I've got a new LAcie Ethernet BIG disk. Im gonna use it to transfer some data from my MacPRO to Laptop via FTP server on it.
    Im useing a big files (footage=big *avi files), and i've noticed it's very slow when i'm copying files from MAC > Lacie HDD (local network). Network should be 1000Mbit, but copying 300GB files took me about 24hrs, I think it's much to slow. Do u have any idea what could happend, or it's just like it is. Or Maybe u got some other ideas how to sort it out. (im not bothered about FTP site speed coz i know the limits of my connection.

    Hi maretsky :
    Lacie Network disks are usually formated using FAT 32, (Older Windows format). This often can slow things down, especially with large files, although 24hrs for a 300GB seems excessive.
    I have an older 100Mbit 400 GB lacie ethernet disk and I have experienced some very slow transfers especially with large files, in fact files larger than about 50GB refuse to transfer properly! I did some resarch and found that the FAT 32 was the problem.
    If you just want to transfer the files then you can do this using firewire target disk mode on your macpro.
    FROM APPLE:
    Transferring files between two computers using FireWire
    You can use a FireWire cable to connect your computer to another Mac and have one of the computers appear as an external hard disk on the other computer. This is sometimes called Target Disk Mode.
    To transfer files using FireWire:
    Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the other computer on.
    Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
    Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding down the T key.)
    A disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer.
    Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk.
    Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
    On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable.
