Lacie d2 Drive + Airport Extreme issues

Hi
Just got the AE, trying to hook up a Lacie d2 via USB.
The AE see's the Lacie, and it's default boot login, but that's it. Air Disk can see it, but no volumes to mount. Lacie d2 has the volumn login, which requres a username and password to connect directly to my mbp.
Do i need to format the d2? The d2 drive also has built web admin/server, since it's NAS. I've restarted and reconnected numerous times.
Anyone using this setup?

Not sure about this.
Firstly are you sure the USB is not just an extender, (Does it work via USB with your mac)
If it works with your mac in USB mode, do you have to log on, if it does this may be your problem when you use it as an airdisk, i.e, where would the logon data come from.

  • Time Machine, Hard Drive, AirPort Extreme, and possible damage?

I plugged in an external HD to my AirPort Extreme (gigabit) base station today and started a Time Machine backup to it. After about 8 hours, I had transferred only 12 gigs of my 46 and ended up stopping it. I realize only the initial backup should take forever, but I am afraid that running the MacBook Pro hard drive constantly for hours could damage it. Are the portable hard drives capable of running for hours on end? What's the risk of damaging it?
I didn't notice any major heat issues with the Penryn MacBook Pro while doing this, but I didn't want the hard drive to break either. Plus, the wireless backup just takes way too long. I can't run an N only network because I have older AirPort expresses (WDS), older G clients in the house, and some iPhones that need to get online. I understand that 802.11g is slower than N, but it's way too slow for wireless backups.

Connecting a USB HDD to an Extreme can be used for Time Machine backups, but it is not officially supported by Apple. You will have to start a new TM backup if you are using the Extreme as TM backups to a NAS (vs. local disks) will backup as a sparsebundle (vs. your current folder format). The same goes for backup to a Time Capsule.

  • Time Machine disk and Airport Extreme issues

I have a portable USB drive I use as my Time Machine disk. It works great, but only when I manually mount the disk.
I recently got an Airport Extreme, which allows me to mount a disk off of it. So, I figure I'll mount my USB Time Machine disk there so Time Machine backs up hourly.
Well, the first issue I get is that Time Machine tells me the disk isn't properly formatted! Odd, since I've had it configured via the app for backups. I go into preferences to select a disk, and I choose my Time Machine disk. When I next tried to run a backup, it indicated I don't have enough room on the disk, requiring ~106 GB .... almost as if it thought it hadn't done any backups before and was going to run a full one.
I dismounted the drive from the Airport Extreme and hooked it back up locally, and I get the same results within Time Machine.
I also noticed a new file on the root of my Time Machine, with a .sparsebundle extension. Is this related in any way?
Anyway, what can I do, short of a full reset of my Time Machine disk, to get it working through my Airport Extreme?

    Me again ...
I hooked up my USB TM disk again to my Airport Extreme. I don't see it as a mounted drive in my Sidebar. However, I see it under the Devices on my sidebar, under "my" computer, then Time Machine Backups, then a backups.backupdb folder.
To start fresh with TM backups I'll need to erase the drive. From what I see, do I just delete the 'backups.backupdb' folder and its contents?

  • Odd Airport Extreme Issues

Hi I'm new to these discussion boards but I was wondering if someone could possibly help me with some airport issues I've been having. My roommate and I both share use an Extreme with Comcast and as far as internet goes everything is great. However outside of that it has issues with my different devices. My main complaint that I would want to be fixed the most is the issue of my PS3. When I hook up my Playstation to the base station it recognizes everything fine and goes through all the steps without an issue. When I go to test the connect though it fails when it tries to connect to the Playstation Network. I know this is an issue with the Airport cause I have the same setup at another house with a different router and have no problems. The reason I find it odd though is because it will randomly work at the most random of times. If someone could help me that would be wonderful since I've been having to live with this for almost 10 months now

+I typically do adjustments to the configuration file via wireless. Do you recommend that I only use a hard-wire connection to adjust the configuration file?+
My preference is to do any configuration changes this way and I advise users to use this method, but if wireless works reliably, there's no reason to change.
Have you checked the disk for errors using Disk Utility?
Are you using a powered USB hub with the drive? The USB port on the AirPort Extreme does not supply enough current for a number of hard drives.
FAT 32 can't handle single file sizes larger than 4 GB, so that may be something to check as well.
You are correct that Time Machine can't be used on the FAT 32 formatted disk.

  • Problem with lacie HD and airport extreme need help!!

Let me first off tell you what my set up is powerbook with the latest 10.4 os, airport extreme software up to date, a Lacie 500gb usb hard disk connected to the airport extreme, i've got an apple TV connected to the extreme via ethernet, I also have a macbook pro using the airport.
The problem i've got is the powerbook is the main hub between the external hard disk and the apple tv but it's started to not hold a connection to the lacie i keep having to tell the powerbook to connect then ok it with a password and as a result i have to keep re syncing things like movies and photos to the apple tv.
Is there a way to automatically connect the powerbook to the hard disk with out it needing a password if not can anyone come up with an explanation as to why the disk has started to unmount after being fine for weeks?
My macbook pro has no problems keeping a connection.
    Thanks in advance

I just found out something today which might help you Daniel, but that doesn't solve our problem in a "classic" way...
So I was very obsessed by the fact that Windows Vista could actually access the shared HD with Bonjour and with a lot of testing I found this : let's say my macbook pro was off, if I would access the HD with Vista and then open up the MacBook Pro, then there would be no problem.
Eventually I found out that the problem really came from the fact that my WD MyBook 1Tb external drive was putting itself on standby after a while (which is a good thing actualy). When I was trying to connect to the drive while it was on standby with Finder, it would try to connect forever... however, it would physically wake up the external drive (I could tell by the sound)... but too late for Finder, and no way to access it other than rebooting the Mac... OR crashing Finder (Apple Menu - Force to quit). Then the Finder restarts automatically and the drive works.
I really don't like this solution (having to crash finder) but it works.
PLEASE if someone has a better way, let me know !!!

  • AirPort Extreme Issues

I am having the hardest time getting my new Airport Extreme to work properly. Or at least me to work properly with it. It was working initially then I configured it the way I like it and started having issues. I reset it to default settings and my computers connect to it and through it. If I go through the Airport setup wizard (give it a network name, WPA2 Personal with key) then my computers can still connect to it, or so they say and so the Airport "Wireless Clients" list says, but they cannot connect to any other computers on the network nor can they connect to the Internet.
The logs are repeating this over and over:
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx (reserved 2).
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
I am going crazy. I am tired so lack of sleep is not helping. Can anyone help me so that I do not have to run my network in an unsecure default mode with my Airport Extreme?
Oh, when I plug into the Airport extreme via ethernet cable, I can access the Internet and other computers just fine. If I unplug the ethernet and just use wireless I can attach to the Airport but no throughput.
    Thanks

Have you tried it with WPA disabled?
Do you have access control enabled/disabled? Disable it if you have it enabled.
Is it configured for a closed network? If so, disable that option.

  • Airport Extreme issue with printer

I recently switched to an Airport Extreme to replace my linksys router.   Since then, I am no longer able to find my Epson Artisan 810 printer when I try to install it.  (I'd been printing with it for about a year prior). My PC has no problem with printing and all of my devices are able to find the wireless signal with no issues.   I also added OS X Lion at the same time.   Now  I am unable to print through my Macbook Pro.  Has anyone had similar issues and found a solution.  Thank you!!

I just spent several hours linking an Epson Workforce 600 printer to a new Airport Extreme network. On the printer, I reset the printer to its original settings. It was then recognized by the Epson setup software program.

  • ATV + USB 2.0 Drive + Airport Extreme Wireless-n + Intel iMac = BROKEN!!!

I have just dumped a sh*tload of money into getting an Apple TV. I purchased:
    1. Airport Extreme @ $180 + tax
    2. Apple TV @ $300 + tax
    3. 2 - 500 GB hard drives @ $218 + tax
    4. 1 - dual drive enclosure to make drives 1 TB @ $80 + tax
My first problem is that I can't use the airport extreme with WEP. It just won't connect to the internet, I have to use it without security.
I plugged in my Apple TV connected to my iMac. I can stream video without any problems with this config. BUT I don't have ANY local hard drive space so I got the external drive.
I started noticing that there is a 15% white flicker on the screen, VERY ANNOYING.
I transferred my iTunes library to the external 1 TB drive, plugged it into my Airport Extreme, setup the drive to display on my desktop, pointed my iTunes library to it across the network. This works ok on the compter.
My ATV would not connect to my iMac anymore. I spent hours trying to get it to work. I finally hit RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS and was able to connect and stream. After about 20 minutes of streaming it stopped and ATV no longer was connected to my iMac. I spent another few hours trying to get it to connect again, but it won't.
I moved my 1 TB USB 2.0 drive and plugged it directly into the iMac, I re-pointed my iTunes library to get it from the local USB drive. The ATV now connects just fine.
I started streaming a movie to watch and I can only watch it in 30 second chunks! Every 30 seconds it spends another 30 seconds buffering. Then it starts playing again for 30 seconds and then buffers again. It does this for all video content, BUT when it was connected through the network it was streaming just fine.
So I said, "fine, just for tonight I will sync this movie so I can at least watch it since I have wasted hours upon hours struggling to get this to work." I synced the movie but it just spins and never transfers over.
How can something so expensive work sooooooo poorly????????????? Was an $800 investment not enough? Not to mention all the money I spend at the iTunes store.
    WHAAAAT THEEEEEEE F******************K IS WRONG!?!?!?!?!?!?

Network problems can be difficult to diagnose, but there are a couple of problem areas I can see with your set up.
Network drives are notoriously slow, moving your drive to a direct connection to your mac will speed up access to it between 15 and 70 times depending on the type of connection you use.
I note you have combined two drives in a single enclosure, RAID drives are not supported as airdisks although certain RAID levels have been seen to work but others haven't.
Loading the drive attached to your mac and moving it can be problematic. It is possible that you can load files with certain characters in their filename that are not acceptable when loaded over a network.
If you have a flicker on your video, my first thought would be a poor or damaged connection/lead.

  • My iMac and iPad keep loosing the wireless connection to Airport Extreme issue started after I installed Lion?

Since installing Lion, I have been loosing my connection to airport Extreme after I have put my IMac in sleep mode.  My Ipad is also loosing the connection.  This issue started since the installation of Lion, is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

  • New Airport Extreme Issues... Please Help

I just got my Air Port Extreme 802.11n base station. Whenever I update settings on it, it doesn't automatically restart, i have to manually power cycle it to get it to function again. Also I connect to the internet via an ethernet LAN (think dorm setup) when i get the station configured properly and the light to show green I cannot connect to the wireless network, when I try airport says that an error has occurred thats it, although I do get internet when I connect to the base station via an ethernet cable. Any ideas or suggestions to help these oddities?

use Airport Utility and check the information you are getting from the router. Does it show orange light or not; if yes then double click it and find out what it is telling you. From your information you need to examine your wireless settings.
You can go to Apple/support and type in Airport Extreme and review the pdf file for creating airport Extreme networks.

  • Airport Extreme issue connecting through usb to freeagent external hdd

I have a brand new 15"MacBook Pro and am using an Airport Extreme for wireless internet throughout my house. That part of the system seems to work fine. My problem is that I want to connect both my printer and FreeAgent hdd to be accesses through my wireless network. When I plug in a 4 port hub everything seems fine (green light). When I plug in the Free Agent hdd the light immediately turns to blinking amber. In airport utility the hdd does not show up but I get a message which says "disk needs repair". If I plug the hdd directly into my MacBook I can can see it, read from it and write to it fine. I can't find anything that indicates that the hdd wouldn't be compatible with the Airport Extreme. Help!

You can access the AirPort Disk via normal file-sharing connection options, such as selecting the server from any Finder window’s sidebar in the Shared section. AirPort Disk uses two standard methods: AFP (for Macs) and Samba (for Windows or Linux).
Leopard accesses AirPort Disks through the Finder, just like any other network volume. Open any Finder window, and look in the sidebar for a list of servers in the Shared section. You should find your AEBSn.
To mount an AirPort Disk volume, follow these steps:
    1. Select the AEBSn in the Sharing section of the sidebar.
    2. To connect as a Guest user, you need take no more steps; To use a named account, click the Connect As button in the upper right and enter your credentials.
    3. Double click a volume that’s shown to mount it on your system.
For both Windows XP and Vista, open the network browser by double-clicking Network on the Desktop. The base station name should appear in the Network browser.

  • Airport Extreme Issues and Set up with Win PC

I have an airport extreme gigabit edition connected via ethernet cables to my 20inch imac and my wifes windows pc also connected via ethernet cable and she has gigabit connection on her system. However, her internet speeds are way slower than mine. I have run adware scanner and made sure it was free of anything that may slow it down that way.
When I set up the Airport Extreme I did nothing more than plug her system in. Is there something else I should have done? Also I can see her computer on the network from both of my macs, but I can't see my macs from her computer.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. She has a book keeping business and does some work from home and she is ready to kill me because of the internet speeds she is getting.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jamie

If the AirPort Extreme that you are asking about looks like the product in this Apple information sheet........
    http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/
Then please click the Tech Specs link in the upper right corner of the page and then look down to System Requirements to see what is required to set up and administer the AirPort Extreme.
Once you have the product set up by using a Mac or iPhone / iPad, a PC should be able to connect to the network.  Please note that we say "should", and not 'will" here, as the Windows FireWall and Microsoft Security Essentials will sometimes have a way of trying to block the PC from connecting.
As far as providing assistance on how to set up the AirPort Extreme, we would need to know what device you are planning to use for this and the make and model number of your modem.

  • Macbook hangs during login - airport extreme issue?

My new macbook hangs during startup. I have an airport extreme 802.11n version base station. My macbook is configured to talk to this base station.
If I power down the airport extreme, login works just fine. If I power on the airport, login hangs.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hi
It is connected through wireless. I have installed the 802.11n drivers on it as well, doesn't help.

  • Painfully Slow Airport Extreme Issues

So I replaced a 54G Belkin wireless router this weekend with a new Airport Extreme thinking I would like to be able to get N speed (N-capable MacBookPro and MacBook in the house) and the benefit of connecting a hard disk.
Unfortunately, both the speed and range of the new Airport Extreme are horrible. The Belkin router performed at better speed and range and I'm close to just reinstalling it.
I've read everything on this site related to slowness but no change in set up has successfully produced better results. Any ideas?
    Dragging in Chicago...

Well, the "speed" really depends on your ISP, it really does not matter if you have a G or N if your ISP has a cap on your connection G & N or even 1Gbps will have no impact on your speed.
It also depends if you are in a house or apartment. If you are in a rural area you will get better results than a heavy traffic downtown apartment building. Sometimes the AEBS will work best being in the top floor of the house, other times it will work best being in the basement of the house (mine is setup in the basement and it works just fantastic.)
Microwaves, wireless phone systems, and other wireless devices such as a cell phone tower will have a great impact in your wireless network.
Try moving the AEBS around the house you will find some spots to provide better coverage than others...
P.s.- have you tried to set the "N" to 5Ghz and to interference robustness??

  • MacBook Pro and new AirPort Extreme issue

    Hi All:
I just bought a new MacBook Pro and Airport. other computers and a wii in my house seem to keep the the connection, but with the MacBook Pro i need to set up the connection every time, as I have the SSID broadcast0 turned off. Has anyone seen this before?
I have attempted to reset my keychain and the MacBook Pro remembers the wireless router at work? what could I be doing wrong?

Yes, just do the downgrade to 7.4.1. The support article is the typical nondescript article that neither indicates if it is a bug or not. This is quite irritating since I've been using an Airdisk for TM since Leopard was released (almost 2 years now). Originally you had to do hacks with "defaults" and touching files to get it to work. Then last year one of the firmware updates no longer required any hacks. Now they bust it.
It's busted because otherwise they wouldn't let TM pick the drive. They'd either present an error dialog stating it's not supported, or the Airdisk wouldn't even show up. Instead, the drive keeps falling off the network. That's something crashing inside the router. I wouldn't be surprised if the drive falls off the network when placed under any load. Apple's QA sure let us down.
