LaCie d2 DVD Burner Does Not Read Discs

Anyone experienced a similar problem or have a solution?
I've just bought a LaCie d2 16X DVD burner w/ Lightscribe and have it connected through firewire to my 1Ghz iBook G4 running OS 10.4.7
iTunes 6 and Toast Titanium 7 recognize the burner, but when I insert a blank CD or DVD the burner doesn't read it and I get a 'no disc' message in Toast.
Neither burner nor discs appear on the desktop.
I've tried installing the latest LaCie Update Tool firmware from their website, but I just get the following message when I run it: "LaCie DVD Update Tool found a DVD drive CD/DVDW SH-S162L but there is no update available. (The firmware is at vLC00)."
That doesn't sound right. I've tried with a USB 2 hook-up and it still doesn't work.
Anyone know of any way to get the burner to recognize blank media? (I've tried it with different brands, being very careful that the disc is positioned in the middle of the tray. Nothing works).
Thanks.

1. You wrote: "I've experimented with multiple media, all to no avail."Yes, but you did not respond to point 1 in my last post: what media is supported?
2. You wrote: "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)."You might want to take a look at the items concerning "burn support" on this XLR8YourMac page. In situations like this, sometimes one can burn from the iApps (iTunes, iDVD, etc.) but not from Finder or Disk Utility. I've not found specific documentation on that value, but I believe it means that the device can burn discs (Yes) but the method is not one supported in Mac OS X, i.e. it's not listed as a supported device in the DiscReording Framework.
Many folks have had luck getting their unsuported external optical drives to working with Patchburn. I've not used it, but it has helped innumerable folks.
3. You wrote: "I'm ready to send this lemon back."I don't blame you. However, you may first want to give LaCie Support a call. See this page for their phone number and hours.
Good luck!

my hp compaq 420 core2 duo dvd drive does not read the dvds but only reads the cds. How can i solve this problem, please help me with the correct answer.

It will likely require replacement of the drive. There is more than one laser in there: one for each function. One can go bad without the other going bad.

Above is the part number for the DVD burner drive. I could not find one on eBay.  Here is one online:
    http://www.mydvddrives.com/replacement-for-hp-compaq-608141-001-sata-cd-dvdrw-dvd-ram-drive-burner-l...
Replacement is easy. Remove a single screw on the bottom and slide the old drive out and replace with the new drive.

  • Tecra M5: DVD drive does not read these mini DVDs

I have canon dvd handycam, and mini dvd works on it. One month back i recorded movie and pictures on mini dvd using handycam and ran mini dvd on my tecra M5 dvd drive, it worked very fine.
Now after 1 month i have 5 mini dvds with movies and pictures which i took on 1 month vacation in diffierent countries, i tried my best but tecra dvd drive does not read these mini dvd, cd drive label appears instead dvd drive when i put mini dvd in it.
All other standard size dvds, cds working fine on it.Its complicated and as well as irritating.
    Any suggestions?
    Why its messedup?

Seems the lens cannot read this miniDVDs. Possibly the drive lens cannot calibrate and therefore the miniDVDs are nonreadable.
Try the solution from sascha. Maybe youre a lucky man and it works.
If not, try to remove the drive physically from the notebook. Reboot the notebook without the drive. The Windows and BIOS shouldnt recognize the drive.
Then shuts down again, put the drive into the notebook and boot up the unit.
The notebook should recognize the drive and should indicate the firmware again.
Im not sure if this will help you but its attemptable

  • DVD RW drive not reading discs

Hey guys, I have a G61-210CA (HP Laptop) and the DVD RW drive no longers reads discs.  I have tried running the Mr Fix it tool which could not repair the problem.  I have tried uninstalling device from device manager and reinstalling it.  I have removed the upper and lower limits in an effort to solve the problem.  I am still having the same issue.  When I put in a disc it does not recognize disc.  The light comes on and the drive spins, it is just unable to read it.  Any suggestions?

    Replace the defective drive.

  • CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions

    Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
    What can I do?
    Please help!

    Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore.

I grasp that your optical drive will not read disks but shows that it is working properly in Device Manager.  This may be due to it requiring a driver update?

  • Equium P200 - DVD drive does not read all discs

My DVD Drive has just started reading some discs and not others, also some of the discs are not read all the time, you can put a disc in click on the dvd drive and it'll open the drive and say insert a disk, device manager says device working properly and driver upto date.
Does anyone know what the problem is?

Yes, terentino is right. Would be helpful if you could tell us which discs exactly work and which not. Maybe that would give the answer.
Did you installed more than one burning application? Sometimes several installed burning applications could interfere with the other one since every application installs some kind of libraries with their own burning/driver engine to control the functions of your drive.

  • CD/DVD-drive does not read/write properly

I can not write any dvds or cds because every time a message pops up with an error.
I tried different burning programs with different cd manufacturers and it still does not seem to be a problem on other computers having the same program and using same cds or dvds.
Another thing is that it can not read dvds all the time; same dvd can work once but not again and whenever i try to open a normal cd-r it says blank disc even when they work perfectly on other computers?
    can anyone plz help

hey ..ok im on a toshiba laptop SA50-543 usind windows XP home edition..the dvd/cd thing is built in and is a DVD rewritabl CD rewritable multiple recorder.
as for the programs i used for burning..i tried nero, sonic record now and the one im on now is roxio easy media creator
as for the error msg it says:
there was a problem writing to the disc.you can try again by clicking the retry button.you will need another blank disc ready.
    further info:
    Recording error
Recording errors can occur when a disc contains dirt, fingerprints, or scratches.
If you are getting recording errors:
    Try using a new disc.
Try using a different manufacturer??s disc.
Ensure the disc is clean before recording:
Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
Wipe the disc from the center to the edge.
    Dry the disc completely.
tried doing all of that and still not recording..and anyway if it was aproblem with the cds why would they work fine on other laptops?
i dont know which other info you need so let me know if theres anything else
Oh yeah, theres an advanced explanation for the recording error but its all in numbers do you need to know that?
    thx

  • DVD Burner does not burn DVD's

I have 1.66 Ghz intel core duo with a DVD burner. The burner will burn CD's but not DVD's. I used the lens cleaner to no avail. Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Any advice?

Your mini probably only came with a combo drive, which can read DVD's, but is unable to burn DVD's.

  • My LG40 DVD burner does not work with iMac. Pls advice

It is a portable DVD writer. According to LG system requirements are Windows 7 or Mac X v10.54 or higher. Can´t open files burnt on my old Mac and not possible to burn files from iMac.

Both Rudegar and Babowa are correct!
You need to supply your own burning software for your iMac to burn discs from your new external optical drive.
Since Apple doesn't integrate optical drives into many of their Mac models any longer, Apple doesn't supply any type of disc burning software any longer.
Older versions of the iLife suite of apps (iLife '09 or '11) have a compatible version of iDVD.
You would need to purchase either of these.
Another purchased CD/DVD burning software is Roxio Toast.
OR there is the free, open source optical disc burning software, Burn.

  • DVD drive does not read media

Hi. This is regarding my Satellite L750 laptop (1 year old), for the past two days the DVD drive refuses to read any media - CDs/DVDs. I've done extensive and exhaustive searches to find a solution to this problem but to no avail. One of the most common problems I have come across is a software conflict with iTunes (installed on my machine) and a solution which states deleting "LowerFilters" and "UpperFilters" from the registry. I have tried this out but have not been succcessful in solving the problem. Also, the drive is listed in the Device Manager.
Just for the record, I have not updated/added/deleted any CD recording software or any other software. I have not even updated iTunes for the past two months.
    I'm using Win 7 64-bit OEM.
Can someone shed some light on this issue? Will appreciate.

You may want to try this Microsoft Fix-It.
What can I do if my CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly?
You could also try using System Restore to restore a previous restore point from before this became an issue.
If that doesn't work, you could try a recovery. Recovering your laptop to its original, out-of-the-box state is a great way to eliminate software as a possible cause of the problem. Note that doing a system recovery will return the laptop to its default conditions, completely wiping your data. Information on how to perform a system recovery can be found in your user's guide. On most models you can hold '0' (zero) with the computer turned off. Then press the power button while continuing to hold '0' until the recovery utlity starts.

  • My MacBook Pro accepts the DVD but does not read it ( no icon too )- I cant eject it too!!

    Hi,
I have a MBP 8.2. My MBP accepted a DVD in but after some whirring noises, it does not show any DVD icon or read the DVD. I checked to see if i could see the icon in My diskUtility; but it isnt shown there. I opened iDVD and checked if i could open a new project,; it asks me to insert a DVD. So apparently it doesnt know there's a DVd in it.
I tried restarting while pressing the trackpad button, but it doesnt work . I think Ive tried almost all the tricks mentioned on every site. I dont want to do the Card trick as it would make my warranty void. I should also probably mention there is no emergency eject hole.
Please HELP! Is there any other way to get the CD out? . Also would upgrading to Lion help with this problem??

Have you tried to enter in Terminal (in the Utilities folder):
    drutil eject
and then press the 'return' key.
If that fails, position the MBP where gravity is your friend, shake it a bit with a vacuum cleaner engaged.
Last resort is the Apple store.
    Ciao.
Installing Lion will not solve this problem.
