Lacie d2 external hard drive

connected lacie d2 external hard drive triple extreme to mini. Does not show on desktop. Does not show name in system profiler but recognizes a firewire attachment. Do not know what to do next.

Disconnect the drive, then reset the mini's PMU. Once done, reconnect the drive and switch it on.
If that doesn't work, check the connecting cable to make sure it's not damaged, and replace it if there is any doubt.
To reset the PMU:
- Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
- Let go of the power button.
- Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • LaCie 120Gb external hard drive no longer recognized

I've had a LaCie 120Gb external hard drive working independently off a firewire cable for a couple of months now. This morning it stopped being picked up as an external drive. It connects because you can feel it whirring, and stops when the computer is turned off (so the cables are working), but it no longer shows up in the finder or disk utility. I tried resetting the PRAM to no effect. Any ideas anyone???
    Dave Nicholls, Auckland.

it spins because it has power. maybe your firewire port is damaged? does the drive have a usb port that you can try? if not, you can remove the hard drive from it's enclosure and install it in a tower mac or pc if you have one and see if it shows up then.

  • LaCie 1TB external hard drive can not connect to E4200

I have my LaCie 1TB external hard drive plugged into the USB-port of the Linksys E4200 so I can access that drive wireless.
However, in my disk management (via Cisco Connect), it does not show under Storage > Disk.
How can I solve this so I can access this hard drive from any computer in the network?
The drive is formatted in NTFS.
    Thanks

Connect the hard drive directly to the computer and make sure that your computer can detect the hard drive.
If it is detected and working properly on your computer then connect the hard drive the USB port on the router.

  • LaCie FireWire External Hard Drive NOT working ...

I have a 250GB LaCie External Hard Drive plugged via FireWire into my Desktop and it is NOT working properly for the last 12-14 months. I have tried several things, including taking it to the store, and nothing seems to fix the problem. I even upgraded the RAM to 1.25 GB, but that did not solve this problem (I never thought this was the problem, but the guy at the Genius Bar suggested so). The most frustrating of all is that sometimes it works (20% of the time) and most of the time it is just not working. Also, when I use it with my MacBook, it works just fine, so this gives me a little bit of a clue that the problem is the desktop, not the Hard Drive, this is why I did not buy a new HDrive, and this is why I am asking help here. (By the way, when I try to eject the LaCie from my Desktop, it says it can't be done because the disk is in use -which I know is not)
Here is the thing as today. Last week I was able to drag some music from my iTunes to my HD using my MacBook. I connected my LaCie back to my desktop (which is where I need it to be) and I can NOT copy any file from my desktop to my LaCie Hardrive. It gives an error message like "The name is too long for the destination". Really weird! If I change the name it still says the same. So when I want to save a CD to my LaCie (which is the main purpose of me having an External Hard Drive, I just can't do it).
When I try to open files from the LaCie, it is fine as long as it is a jpeg or a .doc file. MP3 files won't open, and an error will show like this: Disk could not be read from or written to. I can drag files from LaCie to my dektop, but again, only .doc or .jpeg files.
In regards to the Time Machine, I completely gave that up. It would not back up, it would freeze the computer ... I really don't care about that, really. All I want is my External Hard Drive to be able to save my mp3 files safely, since I have thousands of files in mp3 format.
I tried to use Disk Utility to verify and/or repair de disk, but I was not successful with that either. When repairing, after not even a minute it says "Disk could not be unmounted". When trying to verify, it would say "Filesystem verify or repair failed".
I am DESPERATELY asking for help. I am just a regular guy with few computer knowledge. I just want my Apple to work, that is why I use Apple and not PC. But I need someone who could give me advice on how to fix this problem.
    Thank YOU very much!

My desktop has two FireWire ports. In the first one I had my webcam plugged in. In the second one, the External Hard Drive. I unplugged the camera and used the first port for my External HDrive and now it works! So it seems the problem is a hardware problem with the port.
I'd check to see if the problem returns when you plug the camera back into the second port, or if the drive works in the original port when the camera is not connected.
Edit: Maybe you unplugged the problem, when you unplugged the camera?

  • Question about LaCie 500GB external hard drives

Are the LaCie external 500GB hard drives actually 2 hard drives inside the case or just 1? Are they good?
I read a review that the larger LaCie external hard drives often fail and are not as reliable as the samller ones (like 300GB). Is this true?

    Hi Tim,
I have an external LaCie Porsche Design 500Gb drive, and it is definately only one drive. LaCie's spin down when not in use, which some external drives don't. Spinning down extended the lifespan, so I doubt there will be problems because of it.

  • Backup iTunes playlists on Mac Power PC G4, OS 10.4.11to Lacie Starck external hard drive

I have a Mac Power PC G4, OS 10.4.11, and have recently bought my first external hard drive, a LaCie Starck.
I have my iTunes seperated into convenient playlists: is it just a matter of creating a script for each individual playlist in Intego Backup Assistant (I don't have Intego Backup Manager Pro); and If so, is it best to click on 'click to choose source' or 'drag a volume, a folder or a file' in the Backup Assistant window ? Or is there a better, or easier, way of doing it ?

  • LaCie 3TB external hard drive ejecting improperly

Anybody have experiences with a LaCie external hard drive ejecting improperly? Not able to run long enough to do proper back ups and file maintenace. Closes or ejects on its own.

I just replaced a 2TB LaCie with an 8TB model and encountered the same problem I would get a "disc improperly ejected" message and since my iTunes library is stored there the app would go into kernel panic and require a force quit. Very annoying.
I switched from the thunderbolt ports to the USB and have not had any issues since.
I never had any issue with my My older HD so I think maybe the Thunderbolt connector that came with the new drive was bad.

  • Lacie 250GB External Hard Drive NOT RECOGNIZED

HELP! My Lacie External HD that I've had for several years and holds a lot of my files is no longer being recognized on my MacBOok Pro. It used to recognize it instantly when I plugged the USB cable to the USB Port - now, nothing. The Lacie light is on, but my laptop isn't reading it at all. What's going on??? I did a disk utility - it's not showing up there at all either. Is it due to a software update? Don't get me started on losing out on using my entire Dreamweaver/Flash Studio MX 2004...
ALSO, I notice my iPhone is not being recognized in iPhoto anymore either. It is recognized in iTunes. And yes i've heard many folks say email photos should be removed, which i have done so and still nothing!
    HELP PLEASE!!!

Are other USB devices working normally, Eric?
If so, the most likely cause is that either the bridge or the drive itself in your external enclosure has failed (assuming you have tried a different cable)
No, it is most unlikely to be due to a software update. With an old external drive like yours the most likely explanation is that it has simply failed. If it is the bridge, rather than the hard drive itself, that has died you may be able to remove the HD from the LaCie enclosure, put it in a different enclosure, and recover your stuff. In some cases, too, a drive light will illuminate when the drive is connected to the computer, even if the power supply to the drive itself is faulty. You might want to contact LaCie to see if they have any advice to offer about such situations.
Have you tried the drive on another Mac or another drive on this Mac? THis would immediately narrow down the location of the problem, of course.
    Cheers

  • Lacie D2 External Hard Drive suddenly won't appear on desktop or profiler??

I started my Mac today- and my external firewire 500 gig LacieD2 did not appear on my desktop. I went to Disk Utilities, and it is not showing up. In the profiler- it is listed as Unknown Device? The blue light is continually flashing. I unplugged it- turned off my computer, waited, and reconnected it. Still nothing. Is this hard drive dead? I have essential information on it that I cannot loose.

I hear it spinning- I think?
That may not be so good because it suggests the power is getting to it and it is something else more critical to the functioning of the drive that is wrong. If it is the enclosure you could try moving it out of the enclosure into a different one, or into the computer.
I just used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory- no luck.
Ah, so did Diskwarrior see the drive? I didn't think you could see the drive in Disk Utility.
I also replaced the firewire Cable- no luck.
Good try but the flashing blue light suggested something else to me.
I'm now doing to bring it to a local Computer Store to try to retrieve the information.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
I wrote to Lacie- but they are so slow in responding- it will be days.

  • 10.4.5 Update Causing Error -36 with LaCie Firewire External Hard drives

I have two LaCie Firewire external drives, one for extra storage and one for backups. Since the 10.4.5 update, I've been unable to copy files consistently from my external drives to my hard drive or other external drives. The disks mount, and run like normal - I have my iTunes library on one drive, and all the tracks play normally. I am able to copy very small files, but anything over a couple mb gives me an error -36. I've run disk utilities etc on the external drives and they appear to be just fine. In order to see if it's an OS problem, I hooked the external drives (in a daisy chain) to my girlfriend's ibook. She's running Jaguar still, and had no problems. So it appears that it's an OS upgrade problem. One note, I didn't disconnect the drives when I ran the upgrade, but then, I never have for upgrades, only full OS installs. Is anyone else having this problem and know of any fixes?

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=752&start=0
First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you.

  • LaCie 250G External Hard Drive

I have just recieved a new LaCie external 250G hard drive which is supposed to be plug-and-play.
I plug it it and nothing happens.

Ive done that on all different ports with two cables - none of the other ports have any trouble with the other usb things plugged in.
Also, I tried the drive on my friends PC - it bing-bonged and realised there was a usb device there but couldnt access it.
And I tried it on my other friends G5 - does the same as on my mini, appears on the system profiler, but not on disc utility or desktop.
I think they've sent me a duff drive

  • Lacie 500GB External Hard Drive Fan speed / heat issues?

I have a 500gb Lacie Mini hard drive with the 1394/usb2.0 hub and for some reason when it is connected to my mac mini in the office, it works totally fine, doesnt spin really fast or anything. When I take it home and hook it up to my other mac mini, after 10-15 minutes the fan starts to blow at full speed on the Lacie. The mac mini at home is from March 2005 and its a 1.66 Core Duo, and the one at the office is from March 2007, and is also a 1.66 Core Duo, both with 2gb of ram.
I have noted at the bottom of my home mac mini is very warm to the touch after feeling between the drive and the computer, but it seems odd to me that both computers dont get just as hot considering they are virtually identical aside from the build date. Has anyone else experienced this problem with their Lacie mini drive? The fan spins so high on the drive that its annoying to even use it, and I'd like to take care of it if theres a remedy.
    Thanks!

I agree, the link you posted is strangely inaccurate. I have been trying to post the attempts on this link: http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=109630#109630 but as you can tell I have been frustrated with the whole process. The posts may be confusing because they are step by step. The lacie drive is loud under the mini but not when it is by itself.
As of now the test seem to be inconclusive. It is so strange that I would be convinced if someone told me the fan in the lacie has a temperature sensor inside. But the only thing I can come up with is that the mini gets hot on the bottom, while the lacie gets hot on top. Their combined heat seems to be too much for the lacie's fan to cool. I will also mention that I have fan control software installed on the mini, but this doesn't seem to have any effect as I am not changing the settings during my tests.
The fan having a temperature sensor is just crazy... I removed the fan from the lacie (fan still plugged in) and set up the stack. The lacie bottom was removed for this test. The lacie fan never turned on, and the drive increased in temperature that I felt was too hot. This is where sensing strips would assist in further data.
So here is my next step: Since the fan didn't turn on when the lacie bottom was removed, it seems that the open back and open bottom (the back and bottom is one piece) was enough to keep the sensor from turning on the fan. But as said before, I felt the drive was still too hot. So maybe the lacie case needs more ventilation. Two ways I have thought to do this:
----- cut the fan one large hole instead of a bunch of little ones, allowing more air out.
    - or -
----- cut the bottom vents out (maybe not all of them) to allow more air intake.
I think the first one would solve the problem, but I don't currently have the time to do it. I am going to cut the fan hole first, once I get the time.
I will tell you that the lacie drive is mounted closest to the top of the case. I have thought of purchasing some thermal sensing strips to determine what is hot and when; haven't yet.
AndyO, you said everything right except one part... the mini's air-intake is the vents on the bottom, and the air is obviously pushed out the back by the horizontal fan (there is a special plastic mold that the fan sits horizontally in). Which you would lead us to believe that the mini would heat up with the lacie underneath, but I haven't noticed any drastic changes in the mini fan speed or temperature. Instead the lacie drive gets hot or at least the fan goes crazy.
Hope this helps, I'll let you know when I get the scalpel (really sharp knife) out.
