LaCie d2 Quadra drives - anyone got one

Heya,
was wondering if anybody has a d2 Quadra drive (fanless) and could comment on it, namely regarding any problems and how loud the drive is.

I bought one about 2 and 1/2 years ago and within the first year it started making a high pitched sound. I called LaCie and they said it was probably the power adapter. They sent me a replacement and the high pitch sound stopped... for a year.
A year later, it started making the high pitched sound again along with some other strange sounds and they said "let's replace the drive." I received a replacement pretty quickly (after shipping my original) and it's been fine.
I must say even though the drive made strange sounds, it NEVER CRASHED and I never lost any data. LaCie was very helpful and responsive so I have no complaints with their customer service. Also, I use eSata and benchmark speeds comparable to my Raptor drives.
In terms of noise, it's not loud, but it's not silent.. you can tell it's on. It makes as much noise as my Quad G5 (which is respectably quiet).
Overall, I like the drive, but I try not to record in the same room with it.

I need some advice on this product:
It's called a "padprop" which allows you to apparently use the iPad more comfortably etc.
Anyone got one of these? What do you think of it - any good?
    TIA

Right, and isn't that the one where you don't even have an iPad and you're pimping this UK iPad product just because you thought we'd all appreciate knowing about it?
If it was pulled, as you say, then clearly I wasn't the only one thinking that it smelled perfectly like an ad.

  • Anyone got one to work with Leopard yet?

Posted this Rant at the end of another Topic, slightly OT so reposting here (with some additions):
I wish I could report that iTunes 7.6 broke my apple tv, because that would mean it had been working up until very recently. Sadly however, it hasn't been used since i put leopard on my media server (mac mini).
I bough one of the first batch of 40Gb ones before there were 160Gb ones, and have had to remove and re-add it to iTunes (streaming) every time i used it until leopard. now it will sometimes put in a fleeting appearance when removing a disk or plugging in an iPod.
Once it was even there long enough to tell it to sync one film. Since leopard my work around has been to remove and add it again but with syncing not streaming then sync the one film or tv show that is required. unfortunately this has only worked once.
What have I Tried To fix this i hear you cry well...
    Under Tiger:
complete os rebuild, disabling firewall, rebuilding mac subnet from ground up playing sequentially with advanced router properties (yes i do know what i am doing, I'm a paid IT Technician) calling in a friend with networking and IT communications degree to help, calling in father with 20 years corporate network design experience.
End result? nothing changed in the way my network was setup, as nothing was wrong with the way i had it set up to begin with (that said the initial setup of the router justifies a whole f*ing essay). during this time all mac's at all times had current software. i took all software updates hoping for a fix. in the mean time using the workaround described above.
    Under Leopard:
Are you Joking? even less functionality. after reading up and discovering you CAN'T DISABLE the leopard firewall yet, devised new work around (as above) worked once, gave up. too much to deal with with wifi connections under leopard dropping out continuously.
Result: useless piece of kit with truly wonderful and sleek looking software interface.
I think a large part of the problem is my laughable router which seems to flake out requiring a cold restart multiple times a day. (airport extreme 'n' 1st generation).
Both are just under a year old. I'll wait for 10.5.2 + Apple TV update + update to airport extreme base station (hopefully when time caplsule comes out).
If this doesn't resolve all my issues I'll just return ATV + AEBS, call it a day with apple networking and get a netgear n router, and one of those network HDD's with video playing capability and a tv output and hook both things up by my tv. no video conversion to itunes required. wireless n access to my media. half the cost, job done.
Don't get me wrong, mac's are still amazing but these two devices have shattered my faith in apple products, unless it's a mac or an iPod, I'll steer clear in future.
I would go back to Tiger but it is too much hassle now. They'll fix the WIFI and the firewall in 10.5.2 at which point there'll be nothing to stop me using my machines with leopard. updates for pro software continue to be released and nearly all of my applications worked with a clean install anyway.
Back to the topic, has anyone else got an ATV with leopard that does nothing at all? i want to be able to say to them that the product they sold me is not fit for purpose and return it under that premise.
Also if anyone has a fix (non voodoo please) I'd gladly eat my hat and just start using the bloody thing, albeit 10 months after purchase.

You say you tried switching off the firewall i tried that too and your quite right it seems that it will not work with the firewall off. as turning it off does not turn it off.
sos10: "I did make sure however iTunes wasn't on the list in the Firewall settings."
The list your talking about (if you're talking about the leopard firewall) is the list of programs WITH access. so if you have it set to: "set access for specific services and applications"; iTunes would have to be in that list with "allow all incoming connections".
The only other setting is essential services only which doesn't work. As this doesn't include the port we need to get a connection.
out of the three the one that works the most is the: "set access for specific services and applications"
iTunes - "allow all incoming connections"
This i when i get the odd reminder vis the devices list that i have a useless £200 electrical device heating up my front room.
Maybe this wouldn't be such a problem if you could actually open a port in a firewall (shock horror). I know they'd have to hide the option away somewhere so as not to mess up the simplicity of the interface!

  • Firewire Expresscard problems... anyone got one that works?

I've got a toshiba laptop and I'm trying to hook up my first generation iPod with a startech.com expresscard reader (with two firewire ports). My third gen works fine, but the 1st gen can be read but not wrote to in windows explorer and iTunes (leading to all sorts of drama when I try sync). The iPod works fine in my other firewire computer. Does anyone know whats going wrong or know of an expresscard adapter that they use and works?
    Thanks for your time,
    Sean

Well, I have the one before that, the 2405, and I have them both connected via DVI. No problems.
Somethings wrong with the monitor...send it back.

  • IMAC doesn't recognize lacie external hard drive

    Friends,
I have an imac 2013 3TB fusion drive running Mavericks.  I have a lacie external quadra drive USB 3.0. When I turn on the drive, the computer does not recognize it.  However, if I restart the computer, it then will recognize the drive.  Why is this?  Is there a preference or something I can change?
    Thanks!

Your HD might be corrupted, try going to spotlight, look up "Disk Utility" select your external and verify disk, there might be some errors on the disk, if so, then click repair disk, try that and get back to us.

  • Has anyone got a quick start manual like this?

    Hi all,
I recently bought a refurb Macbook Air 11 (2013) from the australian apple store and I noticed that the quick start guide that I had was not on the apple store. Whats more, it says that my macbook air has a thunderbolt 2 port! Has anyone got one like this? Note the copyright 2014 on the right. Is this the actual quick start guide?

Thanks for reply Demo. What I mean by 'failed' is nothing happened when I hit the 'Verify Now' box on the email from Apple in my Inbox  I expected to move to another page to enter further details but that didn't happen and there was no message saying 'verification accepted' or similar. I spoke to Apple Support and after about an hour she advised me to speak to a friend. If my friend can solve this, Apple needs to give her a job. Thanks again.

Two external hard drive are not appearing on the desktop anymore on my 2008 24" iMac. One is a Lacie d2 Quadra and the other is a G Drive. Both are 1 Tb

Are they daisy chained? Have you tried them one at a time? Have you tried a different FireWire cable? Do they show up in either system profiler or Disk Utility? Have you reset the SMC? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

I'll stay in this chat ... I answered in the other one ... I have a Sony digital Handycam ... from years ago.  I just got the LaCie and I think I formatted it for only to be used on my Mac ... how should I go about reformatting it to be HFS Extended like you said?

  • Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if I upgrade to Lion and then restore from the external drive?

I ordered the disk to update to Snow Leopard.  Did that so I could get the App Store.  Did that so I could download Lion.   After I installed Lion my MacBook is super sluggish.  Takes like 6 seconds just to open a drop-down menu in Finder.
I have been backing up. Will LaCie D2 QUADRA with firewire restore my apps back onto my MacBook Pro if wipe my drive using the USB Lion OS stick (which I think I'll have to buy even though I downloaded the new OS online)?  I have been plugging my laptop into the Lacie drive set on "auto" and it's been working great.
One Genius said yes "you will get everything back" but my Mac buddy says "say goodbye to most of your apps".  Then a guy at the university I asked "do you have a disk image". And I said "what the **** is a disk image?".
Is the problem that I installed an OS on top of new OS without wiping the drive?  Or, is my MacBook Pro too old? Do I need to buy a new one?

    Any help?

SA will indeed transfer accounts, files and apps at first start. Can do so even faster if you clone the internal HDD onto the external (just split into a partition large enough to contain it) and then use it as the source. Probably faster than Time Machine too. The safest and quickest way to do a disk image or clone is using CarbonCopyCloner (free), and it will preserve the Lion Recovery Partition too.
Since you'll have to re--download the Lion installer again, note that you can concoct your very own Lion Installer USB Stick with it prior to reinstalling and not have to pay for the Apple-branded version. See Kappy's tutorial: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3786371?tstart=0
As for the sluggishness, I believe that a great part of the cause is that you only have 2GB RAM. Don't know if your Mac can take more but try at least to get to 4GB, if not 8GB. Should attempt this before  messing with the reinstall, as this may get you what you want.

  • Iomega Prestige or LaCie d2 Quadra 1TB external hard drive?

Good day. I am in need of more storage and am debating the Iomega Prestige or LaCie d2 Quadra 1 TB HD. I plan on using the HD to store my iTunes music files, DV camcorder tape files and overall time machine back-ups. I am leaning toward the Iomega with a USB port since it is priced under $100; however, the LaCie has firewire connectivity. Will I see that much more speed or improvement by utilizing the firewire and going with the LaCie? Is it worth an extra $50-$60?

It depends on how much $$$ you are willing to spend and if you already have a wireless router. Replacing an internal drive, unless you are able to do it yourself, will require paying a technician for installation. If you already have a WiFi setup, you probably don't need the router functions of a Time Capsule.
One option to consider is buying the largest capacity external HD you can afford. You can then create two partitions on it: one for Time Machine and one for everything else (a rule of thumb for Time Machine is to give it at least 1.5x to 2x the space used by the drive it is backing up). Or you could pick up two external drives--depending on the size you buy, the cost probably would be less than a new internal + Time Capsule setup)--and use one exclusively for Time Machine.

  • External Hard Drive - Lacie D2 Quadra, Iomega Mac Companion or MiniMax??

I'm looking for suggestions on a 2TB FW800 external hard drive for my iMac (Mid 2010).  I understand the quality/reputation of the Lacie products, but I am intrigued by the Iomega Mac Companion and Iomega Minimax.  The companion and minimax look almost identical.  Anyone have any thoughts on the difference between the two?  How about suggestions for best long-term quality? And value for the money...
I think the Lacie is the only one that powers up and powers down when the iMac wakes/sleeps.  Let me know good/bad please!  Thanks in advance...

I purchased a LaCie d2 1TB drive for Time Machine use and then a month later a second LaCie d2 1TB for my files.  I daisy-chained them and plan to get a third as an external bootable drive.  They stay on when the iMac sleeps, but that might just be a switch setting (and how could TM backup if the designated b/u drive is off?)  However, when I power down the drive power down simultaneously.  So far they work very well for me.

  • Finder no longer detects a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive

I have a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive that is connected with firewire 400 to my Macbook Pro. It will not show in Finder or the desktop.
It constantly in running because I can hear the clicking sound coming from it and it runs all the time. I cannot see it on my Mac.

Yes, you have to format it with Disk utility - that is what it is for. So it seems you did that correctly - check back to make sure that it is the GUID partition scheme.
Do you have any LaCie software installed? Your drive needs nothing on it to work. First, try to just restart your computer - that may work (after ejecting and unplugging the drive). If it doesn't, plug it back in and you might want to try to run through it again (use partition this time > one or more partitions).

  • G-Tech G-DRIVE Q 500GB Quad Interface Hard Drive or LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB?

    Hi,
Okay I was all set to get the Lacie d2 Quadra 500 GB drive for $296.00 Canadian as I'd heard from people on this site and others it was a good one to buy.
Then I was on apple.ca yesterday and saw the G-Tech G-DRIVE Q 500GB Quad Interface Hard Drive for $319.00 Canadian and I get Macworld and that is always on the Top Product list. Should I get the G-Tech one instead for only $23.00 more?
Thoughts? Does one have more features then the other? I see the Lacie has a one button backup option but not sure about G-Tech.

  • Any one using the Lacie d2 Quadra USB 3

I was wondering if anyone was using the Lacie d2 Quadra USB 3 Drive. If so, I was also wondering if the included management software can be deleted and just manage the drive via Disk Utility.
I just bought an OWC Mecury Elite Pro. I like it, except for the fan noise.

I have 4 of models with USB 2.0 which are almost identical. When you connect to the Mac for the first time the Lacie will sense it's connected to OS X and format correctly. After that simply forget about software or re-format the drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) in Disk Utility and that will wipe the drive clean.
Congrat's on getting the drive, I have had mine for 4.5 years with no issues at all.
