Lacie disk mini won't mount

I just bought a intel core duo iMac and hooked up my lacie disk mini via USB to access my itunes library and other files only to get a message saying that no disk mini was found. Both Disk Utility and Norton see the external hard drive and scan it with positive results. I even connected the disk mini to my freinds PC and I could access the files just fine. Any ideas anybody?

Welcome to the discussions, Tommy!
According to LaCie's FAQs on this subject, they ask users to try -
- A different cable
- Repair permissions
- Shut down and unplug your Mac for 15 minutes to reset the FW/USB bus
I am not sure if this is an issue related to your iMac being a Core Duo model, but this is the forum for the G5 iMacs. You might want to post this question in the iMac (Early 2006) forums for your model. If it is specific to the Core Duos, the users there might have experienced the same problem and have a solution.

  • Lacie Hard Drives won't mount

My two Lacie hard drives won't mount on my G5 running Tiger. They were fine on my G4 iMac running Panther. I've tried using the Lacie Update Tool but the drives aren't recognised. I've tested the firewire cables on another drive that works and they're fine, so it's not cables.
Both drives power up okay and whir into action, but just aren't talking to the G5.

This happened to me with a LaCie external drive as well.
The problem is that LaCie formats the drives as PC-based
and not Mac Extended, so unless you reformatted the
drives to Mac when you started using them, your access
to them on any Mac may result in a failure to mount.
Once that happens retrieval of data is made more difficult
    because of this formatting incongruity.
There is no way you can get the data once your G4 quits
mounting them. If you can get the data off of the drives,
back it up and then reformat the drives using Mac's Disc
Utility. Then you can reload the data and I suspect all of
your Macs will then mount the drives via Firewire.
    Good Luck!

  • Disk Image Won't Mount - Reason: Device Not Recognized

As I've searched the discussion forums, I've seen plenty of postings for "Disk Image Won't Mount" and for "Device Not Recognized" but not the way I'm seeing it on my laptop.
After a backup and restore, my mac will no longer mount any... and I mean any images. I have downloaded several security or software updates from different vendors and each .dmg file will not mount. I still have the .dmg files in hopes that after I get this problem solved, I'll be able to install them, but...
It always gives the same reason for not mounting and I'm at a loss on what to do next. I've run Software Update hoping it will be a quick fix, but have had no success.
    Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem. Using FireWire disk mode, I put a disk image of my entire iBook onto my iMac as a back-up. (For an unrelated problem, Apple told me I needed to erase my iBook completely and do a clean install of the system.) Well, I screwed something up. I don't know what exactly--maybe I didn't "put away" the device correctly, but the next day when I flipped on my iMac, the disk image of my iBook was just gone, and not to be found anywhere. I finally succeeded in restoring the image using TechTool, which scanned the entire volume of the iMac for directory information. And it's all there, because the img file is more than 10GB. But when I double-click on it, I get the following error msg: "The following disk images failed to mount...reason--not recognized." I've checked the app it's supposed to open with, permissions, and run Disk Utility volume repair. No dice. Any ideas??? Did I mention that this is EVERYTHING I had on my iBook???

  • LaCie external drive won't mount on iMAC

    Hi,
My external LaCie external drive won't mount on my iMAC running 10.6.8 but will mount and show up on my PC as working fine, however I am not able to read the information on it as it was formatted for my iMAC. Therefore it leads me to believe this is a software issue.
I have reason to believe someone had changed the permissions and prevented the mounting of this external drive (which belongs to me)  so that the contents won't be found on my iMAC.
    How to resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cait

    Cait,
Please try a SMC reset, it may take 2-3 attempts for it to work. Look over the instructions below carefully.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Mac mini won't mount in Firewire target mode

I connect one non-booting Mac mini to one working Mac mini and tried to get the data off the non-booting one, but it won't mount.
When I try to repair the disk using the Disk Utility from the working mini, it says:
    Verify and Repair disk “disk1s3”

    Invalid node structure
    Invalid node structure
Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because
    of an error
How can I get my data off the computer. I can reinstall the OS, but I have data in Application Data folder that I want to save too. Also, does Archive install save the whole user directory including Application Data?
I also have some files made in GarageBand saved in the Music folder.
I hope that someone can help me!

If Disk Utility cannot repair the drive then you may want to consider investing in a product like Alsoft's DiskWarrior…
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
Given your symptoms I doubt you'll be able to do anything at all, barring an erase and install, in the drive until you get the disk repaired.

  • Mac mini won't mount hard drive on start up

My mac mini was shut dow for a week while on vacation.  Upon return I tried to start up and hard drive won't mount.  I can hear it make repeated attempts but it won't engage.

Actually I think there may have been a power outage while I was gone, but the computer was shut down.  Could this be a factor?
I do not get any boot choices it just keeps cycling the initial disk start-up prior to the chime.  I'll try starting with the Option or alt key down.

  • G drive mini won't mount via firewire 800. usb ok

It hasnt been too long i bought myself a gdrive mini to benefit from the firewire 800 port. It seems that once my macbook gets warm the drive won't mount. It mounts just fine via usb. I've been to the genius bar twice and it worked both times, thats when i noticed it only happens when its warm. I was convinced its a software issue, but i dont know what to think anymore.
Has anyone encounter this issue? Any ideas of whats causing this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

WAIT WAIT EVERYONE....READ THIS....VERY SIMPLE FIX!
My G mini 750GB drive stopped mounting.....I tried a million methods to get the G mini drive to mount and searched a ton of forums but never found this VERY EASY FIX.  Try powering down your computer (imac in my case), then UNPLUG the power supply from the back of the computer....VERY IMPORTANT TO UNPLUG COMPUTER FROM ELECTRIC SOURCE. Nothing else worked for me.
Wait a minute, then plug back in and re-boot....MAGIC - freakin G mini showed up on desk top!
Good Lord why is this simple fix not all over the G mini site??????  It ought to be on the front of the box when you buy this thing!  Seems no one at G mini sites talk about this and people are sending drives all over for repair!
    Hope this helps!

  • Mini Won't mount

When I boot under OS 9.1, my iPod won't mount, why? What extension do I need to install?

"When I boot under OS 9.1, my iPod won't mount, why?"
Because the system requirements for the iPod mini are 10.2.8 or later.

  • External Backup Disk Suddenly Won't Mount...

Tried to shut down, restart and repair the disk with Disk Utility...but it won't mount. Any suggestions? It's a WD 500GB external backup disk...I use it for Time Machine.
    Thanks!

The only other thing that I can suggest at this point is to turn Time Machine off and try reseting the partition map scheme +(GUID Partition Table)+ and the format +(Mac OS Extended)+ again to see if it repairs the drive. Unfortunately that will erase all of your previous TM backups, but might get the drive working correctly again. Then if and when you get the drive working correctly go to the Time Machine Preference and reselect the drive to Use for Backup.

  • Another OS 10.4.11 update problem - disk images won't mount?

    Hi people,
Have never had to post on these boards as i've never suffered serious problems with my mac, until today.
Whilst installing/updating my powerbook to version 10.4.11 my mac seemed to crash so i rebooted my system. Probably not the best thing to do (i have little patience so was annoyed).
I'm guessing the update installed as my mac says it is now version 10.4.11 but when i go to mount any disk images it will not mount at all, but instead comes up with this message -
"The following disk image failed to mount
    Reason - error 0xe00002c9"
I've verified and repaired the permissions on the startup drive in disk utility, and also verified the volumed and it says everything is ok in those departments. Although the option to repair the disk is not available for selection.
I've downloaded applejack, but obviously can't mount the image file.
Please help as this is a big problem with regards to my work and play!
    Thanks for reading.

Hmm thank you for your time and effort on this problem BDAqua but unfortunately it still doesn't want to work! The 'DMG utility' program comes back with an error when trying to mount any of the disk images i have tried. I have been able to get up the script of what its doing in the 'console' application but that is ridiculously long, and i'd be lying if i said i have a single clue about what any of the script in it means!
So i'm guessing i'm gunna be archiving and re-installing. But this boads another question as i haven't a slightest clue about how to archive my files as i really don't want to lose any of it.
    sorry BDAqua

I have a suggestion -- call someone you know who has access to high speed internet and ask him/her to download the combo dmg file, put it on a CD, and mail it to you in an envelope. If you are not too far from an Apple Store, they might let you bring a CD in to do the same.
Otherwise, you'll need to re-do the download again because it no doubt was corrupted by the power failure. The starting over might have worked except for the reason for the interruption being a power failure, which is hard to recover from.

  • G-Drive Mini won't mount - can't see it in Disk Utility

Last night my g-drive mini was unplugged from the firewire port, didn't get ejected before unplugging. When I went to put it back in, the power light comes on, but I don't hear the HD spin, and it doesn't mount.
When I open disk utility, I still don't see the drive.... oh for the love of god please help... pretty much lifes work/backup on there.
    Noah

When i do, its only showing my big gdrive, a connected server, and my hd. But not the mini.
One other detail i should add, if it changes anything, is last night i tried hooking up the g-drive mini to my airport express just to see if it would work wirelessly (after soon finding out express doesnt support that). Having to use a USB cord, I needed to plug it into the wall with the ac-adapter.
Thats when I went to plug it back into my laptop and wouldn't mount from that moment forward.

  • Mini won't mount disk on the desktop

    I have two disks, a cd-r and a dvd-r. Both were burned
on a windows pc, but contain files that are in formats that I
    can use on my Mac.
The problem is, neither one of the disks will show up on the desktop.
It makes all sorts of noise, reading the disk when I insert it, but then just gets quiet, and no image on the desktop.
If I go to disk utility, the disk is there, but I know of no way to open it from disk utility. Is there a way to do this?
I have also heard of utilities you can download that supposedly will mount the disk on the desktop. Can someone please help?
    Thanks!

Hi! Thanks so much for trying to help. ^_^
Yes, I have cd's, dvd's and ipods checked.
I haven't had this happen with any other disks that I own.
I hadn't tried 'mount' from disk utility, but gave it a try.
When I went to Disk Utility, I could highlight the disk, but I can't click on
mount, as it is not highlighted, even after I click on the disk.
These files should be playable, I just can't make the disk show up.
Would there be any other way to get these disks to show up?

  • G-Drive Mini won't mount

    Hello all,
    A little back story:
I used a 160gb G-Drive Mini with my 15 Al Powerbook G4 (w/OSX 10.4.11) extensively for a couple years with a firewire 400 cable. One day the drive's firewire port crapped out, and since the machine doesnt have the power to run the drive on USB, I figured out that hooking up both USB and firewire cables worked for mounting the drive. (I assume the firewire port was powering the drive and USB was working for data transfer) Time went on, got used to using the drive like this, got fed up, one day decided to send it in for repair, got my drive back and it still wouldnt mount when using just a firewire cable, sent the drive back again and they sent me a brand new one which i just got today.
Drive still wont mount with just the firewire 400. The drive powers up just fine. I can hear it spin when plugged in, but never mounts. It's also not present in disk utility or system profiler. Tried different cables.
Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks.

Hi, roland, and welcome to AppleDiscussions. Sounds to me like insufficient power from the FireWire port alone. That's a rare problem with FireWire drives and Powerbooks, though it's much more the rule than the exception with USB drives and Powerbooks. If you choose to keep using this particular brand and model of drive, you'll probably have to use both the USB and FireWire ports to get enough power to it. It apparently requires considerably more power than most bus-powered FireWire drives do, and/or your Powerbook is putting out considerably less than most other Powerbooks.

  • Problem with Startup; Macintosh Hard Disk (internal) won't mount

Hi. I hope you can help me.
I was getting ready to install Leopard on my computer but was stupid enough not to make a backup first. During the installation process, Leopard warned me that for it to upgrade to Leopard from Tiger, it will have to completely erase my hard disk and reformat it. I don't know why that is. Perhaps because at that time, I only had 6GB left in my drive. So, I cancelled out of the installation process. Something happened however and now my PowerPC G5 won't restart. It completely blanks out and shuts down in the middle of the restart. So I restarted using my Tiger install DVD. I then started Disk Utility. From there, I can see that while it can see my Macintosh hard disk, it is greyed out and shown as not mounted. I clicked on the Mount button, but that didn't work. I repaired disk, and that encountered errors and didn't go all the way through. I realize my only option might be to competely erase the drive and install Leopard or Tiger again. Before doing that though, I'd really like to rescue some of the files in the hard disk. What can I do? I have the use of a macbook and an iomega external drive at my discretion.
    Thanks so much!

Diskwarrior has been known to find disks.  Or try Techtool Pro.
