LaCie Drives crash Finder

I searched all over and could not find a similar situation. Suddenly today my Finder starts to crash. I was listening to iTunes - the songs reside on a LaCie 2bid RAID connected via Firewire 800. I turned off the drive and I get the device removal error and Finder suddenly pops up. I tried different ports first - 800, 400 and USB. Same thing. I have the MacBook Pro Intel version (Leopard 10.5.2) - I removed all USB and Firewire devices and rebooted. Same thing.
Of note, I could open the programs that are on the dock, and while the iTunes was running, I could still see the files on the drive.
Next I tried to remove the com.apple.finder.plst file - that did not work.
I have two other LaCies - a rugged and the old d2. Those behaved the same way - Finder crashing. The Console error says "Bus Error" and repeats every second when the drive is attached.
The last thing I tried was a Fujitsu drive in some external case I got from New Egg and that drive connected just fine. No crashing, and I can access files.
I downloaded and installed nothing in the past few days, and the LaCie was working fine. As I said, it just started to do this on its own.
Any ideas? If the LaCies are a problem, I need to find a way to get to my data!
Thanks.

Hmm. I wonder if the problem is related to the Knowledge Base article that Apple recently published (it is one of the strangest I have ever seen). See it here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307502
It does involve Finder crashes and external drives, but the drive name causing the problem discussed is the startup drive, as given in the Sharing Prefs. Worth a look I think.

  • External Lacie drive crashed, now I can't find a recent backup for LR3 catalog.

I have LR3 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8.  My catalog, cache and images were stored on an external Lacie 1TB drive (partitioned so it can be used by a pc and mac).  My catalog backup files were saved on another external drive MXTR as well as copies of all my images.  The Lacie had started self ejecting while running LR3 and I thought it was maybe a problem with the cable, as it would work fine after rebooting.  Yesterday it crashed LR3 and never remounted.  I used Disk Utility to try and repair the disk and it instructed me to erase the disk and start over.  I was not worried, since my catalog was backed up to another drive.  10 hours to erase the drive (the drive never quit during this time).  Another 2 hours to copy my images from the MXTR to the Lacie (again the drive never self ejected during this time either).  So now I go to find my most recent backup catalog.  The most recent one I could find was dated 2/09/2012.  I am baffled.  What happened all those times I was backing up?  I upgraded to LR3 in 2011, and I don't remember ever telling it to backup to another folder or drive.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

What happened all those times I was backing up?
We can't possibly know what happend or where your backups are. But you can indeed search all of your available hard disks and see if there are any files named *.LRCAT with recent dates.
By the way, I would be extremely wary of using that Lacie drive any more. If it was me, I'd replace it.

  • Server's network drive crashes Finder.

    Hi all,
Im having a problem where intermittently, trying to open a folder on a home server's networked (AFP) drive is crashing Finder and forcing me to do a hard reboot.  force quitting finder DOES NOT fix it.  I click on the server on the lefthand side in finder, and then on a folder ON the server, and it hangs and gives me the pinwheel.
Here is the Finder crash log- I hope someone can decipher it for me.

  • Alias to External Drive Crashes Finder

I have an alias in my ~/Movies folder that is linked to a folder on my external hard drive. The problem is that sometimes when I follow the alias the Finder quickly crashes and then relaunches. After it has done that it works fine when I try again. I have even tried deleting the alias and creating a symbolic link in zsh but that just gives the same problem.
The drive is 1TB, HFS+ Journaled, and I know it's not fragmented because it's a new drive. I just copied the files over a few days ago.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this annoying bug?

Disk Utility shows disk as being repaired or not needing repair suggests the disk structure is okay and using Disk Warrior to create a new directory suggests the problem isn't a directory. So that leaves...permissions? I wouldn't think that would cause a finder crash. A malformed icon maybe? a damaged .DS Store file? a damaged desktop directory? A funky external drive perhaps.
The obvious quick fix is to wipe the drive - I'd go so far as to partition it first. Of course if you have important files to remove that may not be an acceptable option, you'd want to move files first.
Here's a thought. There are several Finder replacements/adjuncts: Pathfinder and Forklift for example. Why not try downloading these programs and get one of them running before you plug in the drive. The Finder crashes, but will these programs play nice? If so, you should be able to take a look at what pops up when the disk is mounted - look at the desktop and any window(s) that open from that drive. If there are any custom icons on the files, remove them. Delete the .DS Store files, etc. See if that works. If nothing else, you can copy important files to another drive or burn a CD/DVD to save the important stuff before you format the drive.

  • LaCie drive crash

I've got a 2 TB LaCie Biggest F800 drive I've been using for the last few years and it locked up on me the other day while I was editing. It has slowed to the point that it is unusable. I ran DiskWarrior and it basically said that the files were okay, but something was mechanically wrong with the drive and it could not be repaired.
I have a new external drive that I want to transfer the files to, but the problem is the old drive is so slow it was going to take days to transfer one folder that, under normal circumstances, should take a half hour at most.
I've tried transferring the files using DiskWarrior in preview mode (per it's recommendation) and by using Data Rescue II. Now I know it's going to take some time to transfer 1.5 TB of data (transferring via FW800), but I think 2500 hours is a little ridiculous.
What I'm wondering is, is there anyway to extract the data any faster? Would I be better off removing each of the 4 drives and plugging each of them into the extra hard drive slot on my G5? Is that even an option?

Yeah, that's my fault. For some reason I trusted the drive. Big mistake! I've since ordered several backup drives.
    LaCie. Need I say more.
I agree. I've been very disappointed with their product. I will never buy again. My new drive is a CalDigit. I've read good things about them.
And build your drives around native SATA enclosure(s) and controller.
You may need to buy a bare bones LaCie bridged case
I may give that a try.
    Thanks for the input!

  • Old hard drive crashed, cannot get iTunes to find files

    Hi,
Please help. Been working on this for weeks and can't get it right. Am at my wit's end:
Old hard drive crashed; had new one installed. Tech person was able to find my iTunes on old drive and saved to thumbdrive. Downloaded most recent software and synced iPod - it "read" some of what was on it but would not play anything. tried to consolidate libraries/import from thumbdrive, then could view my whole library, but when I try to play any song it says it cannot locate the original file - does not matter if i purchased it from iTunes or added from CD. This computer is authorized, I've tried all the other "tutorials," added files (didn't work), tried using my iPod to xfer music to new computer - didn't work. I have my old hard drive booted and ready to go, can see the files and have copied them direct from drive to drive, still didn't work (followed the directions to keep music folder organized, etc.) What am I doing wrong?? I can't use my iTunes at all - just downloaded three new songs and that's all I can play from it. iPod itself seems unaffected.
    Thanks!! - [email protected]

Hi, you said you still have access to your old hard drive.
Can you move the entire itunes folder from the old to the new?
Not just the 'itunes music' folder - you need the parent folder of that.
It has an important file named itunes library.itl that holds ratings, play counts and the paths to your music files.
Copy that entire itunes folder and all its subfolders over to the new PC.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes and choose the ITL file you just copied over.

    login_directory = /Users/yourname
If the Library folder is not shown in your login directory, then open a Finder window, and press command+J. This will open a Finder View Options panel. On it, there is a selectable entry to Show Library Folder. Once this is selected, the Library folder will appear. Now, follow the instructions in my May 6 post. You will have to right-click on com.apple.iWork.Pages and choose Show Package Contents, before continuing.
    Correction: login_directory/Library/Containers/com.apple.iWork.Pages/Data/Library/Applicatio n Support/User Templates/
The host software persists in changing the correct Application Support text above to Applicatio n Support, which does not exist.

  • My hard drive crashed and I can not find my Photoshop CS6's serial number. What do I do?

I originally had Photoshop CS5 (bought DVD), but decided to upgrade to Photoshop CS6. When I upgraded to Photoshop CS6, I purchased it online and did it through e-mail instead of DVD. The e-mail has disappeared, and my computer's hard drive crashed so I have no idea what my Photoshop CS6's serial number is. How would I be able to find it?

You cannot "connect" to it by using the serial number. The following has information from Apple regarding a lost or stolen device: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen

  • External Hard Drive crashed with all songs on it.  HELP!!!

Hello. My kids have used my work PC as their itunes playground for over the past year. I added a Lacie external hard drive to help them save thier music and had itunes on it, as well as my pc. The external hard drive crashed and won't communicate with the pc at all so when we bring up itunes on the pc it shows exclamation marks next to almost all of the songs and won't play them. I still have almost all of our music on my ipod, except about 170 songs that they purchased since I last plugged in my ipod, they have their own mini's. I want to know how to get the songs back to my computer. I am afraid if I connect the 60GB ipod to the pc all of our songs will be wiped out since my ipod is on autosync. Can anyone give me a reliable way to get everything back to normal? PLEASE!!!!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article:: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • LaCie Rugged Crashes Mac; then won't mount.

This is very strange, and I will do my best to describe this bizarre issue adequately.
Earlier this month I purchased a 500GB LaCie Rugged drive from Amazon. I plugged it in and started loading a few of my files onto the drive and about halfway through the process my mac froze. I restarted the computer and found that I couldn't find the drive, not even in disc utility. Even when I place my hand on the drive I cannot feel it buzz. So i figure that the drive is shot and I should return it.
I don't return it because now it is loaded with some of my personal files, so I hem and haw over what to do about the thing. Inevitably I sit on it and do nothing. Out of curiosity I plugged it back in last night and, low and behold, it WORKED! Thrilled, I left the bugger plugged in and walked away. A few hours later when I came back to the computer I found that it had froze and, upon rebooting it, the LaCie drive had vanished and stopped working.
Why? What is going on here? Why the heck would it suddenly start working again nearly 30 days later, and why is it crashing? Has anyone had an issue resembling this one, and if so does anyone recommend a solution?
    Many thanks,
    Josh.

Of course you don't, just be ready when it does, you may not get another chance.
