LaCie DVD burner almost a waste of money?

Has anyone with OSX 10.3.9 got a LaCie 22x d2 DVD +/-RW Drive to write DVDs from the Finder?
I have an Apple iBook Power PC G4 with an  internal drive which writes only CDs.
I bought the LaCie d2 Drive [ Product code 301484EK ] so I could write DVDs.
It has the latest Firmware v1.20 ( Oct 4  2009 ).
I have used the supplied DVD-ROM to install the software and it showed a message
"Install LaCie DiscRecording Support
The software was successfully installed
Click Restart to finish installing the software."
I did a Restart as required.
It does write DVDs from Toast7 Basic, included on the DVD-ROM sent with the Drive, but it will not write DVDs from the Finder.
Finder/File/ does not show the expected option "New Burn Folder" which is what I expected from LaCie Support web site - as the following link claims:
http://www.lacie.com/us/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10113&article=1065
I have spent countless hours exchanging emails with LaCie Tech Support but they do not have a solution.
http://www.lacie.com/UK/mystuff/ticket/ticket.htm?id=101666718
At the request of LaCie Tech Support, the software has also been downloaded from
http://www.lacie.com/us/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10055
but no improvement.
The LaCie DVD Writer does appear in System Profiler, but Disc Burning is shown as "Not Supported".
I have used Firewire connections as LaCie recommended, but I get the same poor results using USB, DVDs, CDs.
I have tried to use Disk Utility to burn a disk image on a blank DVD on the LaCie drive, but that does not work either.
Although I can manage to write DVDs using Toast, so my main requirement has been met, it is unsatisfactory to have bought new equipment directly from the manufacturer only to find that the claimed features do not all work.
Have I just been wasting my time expecting this drive to work as LaCie claimed with OSX 10.3.9?
I see other users have had trouble with LaCie even with OSX more recent than 10.3.9.
See:

I recently purchased an LaCie DVD writer d2 DVD + / - 22.

LaCie DVD burner total waste of money
So I am still asking
"Has anyone with OSX 10.3.9 got LaCie 22x d2 DVD +/-RW Drive to write DVDs from the Finder?"

Thanks for helpful reply.
"If that fails, check with them if they can get you at least a Roxio Toast Lite version that works with it."
Not really necessary as I CAN already use TOAST as stated below, as in original post.
"It does write DVDs from Toast7 Basic, included on the DVD-ROM sent with the Drive, but it will not write DVDs from the Finder."
"Have you tried http://www.patchburn.de/"?
Not yet, but that looks good.
They even have a version which could work with our other Apple - G4 iMac on OSX 10.2.8 - which would be very convenient.
"http://www.macsales.com/ is much more reliable in terms of selling burners worldwide that work with any version of Mac OS X."
Perhaps.
But their web site includes the identical LaCie DVD Writer, with just the usual claims about OK for OSX 10.3.9.
No specialwarnings or restrictions mentioned.

  • Another LaCie DVD burner problem

Hi. I’m hoping one of you Mac geniuses out there can help me out. I received a LaCie DVD burner for Christmas, and so far, I can not get it to work with any Mac software. The drive will burn from Toast 7 Platinum (which was included with the drive), but that’s it. More details:
    1. LaCie’s DiscRecording would not install (this should have been my first clue!). So I wrote LaCie Tech Support, and they told me how to manually install the software. This involved creating a DiscRecording folder in the Library on my hard drive. Next I created a DeviceProfiles folder in the DiscRecording folder. Then I dragged the “lacie.drprofile” (from their software disc) to the DeviceProfiles folder, and restarted my computer, as per instructions. This should have fixed everything.
    2. I assembled a slide show in iDVD, and went to burn it on my new drive. It whirred for about 3 seconds, and spit out the disc. I received 2 error messages:
    #1. BURNING COMPLETE
    There were some errors:
    Recording engine: internal error occured
    #2. MULTIPLEXER ERROR
There was a problem during multiplexing/burning
    3. So I decided to try saving my slide show as a disk image, and burn it from Disk Utilities. I inserted a DVD+R disc into the drive, it whirred for a few seconds, then told me the blank DVD that I inserted didn’t have enough room to hold my slide show (the file size is 270mb). After reading of other people’s problems here on the forum, I decided to try again, this time with a DVD-R disc (still using Disk Utilities). I inserted the disc, the drive whirred, and....nothing. The burn box said “Waiting for the drive”, only the drive wasn’t doing anything!!! The little lamp signifying drive activity was dark. And the disc wouldn’t eject!
LaCie Tech Support says as long as the drive burns from their software (Toast), everything is OK. I’m stumped. Any ideas? I’m just about ready to take the drive back and get a different brand. Any recommendations? Thanks.

    Buhtwheat,
Thanks for replying. In response to your questions:
Toast will not burn my disk image, it says .img files
    are not supported.
Can you play the image file using Apple's DVD Player application?
This is a critical step - double-click on the image file to mount it on your desktop. Open the DVD Player application (in your Applications folder) - select File>Open DVD media and select the VIDEO_TS folder on the mounted image file. Does it play? If so, iDVD is working. I know you've already tried DU, but please try again -try to use Apple's Disk Utility (in your Applications>Utilities folder) to burn the disk image to writable media. See Burning a disk image file on a CD or DVD in Mac OS X at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006 Does Disk Utility see your burner? What errors do you see?
The Toast version usually shipped with burners is 'crippled' and can't do everything a full version does. What version of Toast do you have - 6 or 7?
Roxio changed the user interfacer in the different versions and the way you things can be very different in the different versions.
    iTunes recognizes the drive.
    I think that's a good sign.

  • Using LaCie dvd burner with fce hd

has anyone out there used a LaCie dvd burner with toast titanium 6.1.1 to burn fce hd project? the fce hd files(as a QT file ) contains 2 folders --the movie file along with an a-v 1 file(assuming this a media file) are boththese files to be dropped into the TOAST titanium drop window for burning? burning a dvd takes hours and i'm trying to save myself a lot of aggravation--thanks folks

This is not a Final Cut Express related topic. You're more likely to find LaCie DVD burner users on forums like iDVD and DVD Studio Pro.

  • LaCie DVD Burner not working since Snow Leopard update

Hi there, I'm searching the web for this one for some time now. Since I upgraded my MacBook to Snow Leopard (Currently I'm on 10.6.4) my LaCie DVD Burner doesn't work anymore.
The external DVD burner is connected trough USB to my MacBook and it was always working nicely. But since the upgrade to snow leopard the macbook doesn't even 'see' him anymore. I used to use Toast Titanium to burn my disks, but since the upgrade this tool doesn't recognize the DVD burner anymore.
Is this a known issue? In the mac info I can't see the LaCie burner.
Hope you guys can help me out on this one!
    Regards,
    Douwe Pieter van den Bos

I just noticed a problem with my Lacie dvd/cd superdrive also. I install any disk blank or formatted and the drive just hums and clicks and opens up the tray. I contacted Lacie and they don't even have the drive on the lists of products they sell. I wrote them an email and we cleared that up (took several days). It took me 8 days before I finally got fed up with dumb questions like "did you try another power supply?" Where am I going to get another one of those? How could the problem possibly be a power supply when the drive is recognized in Disk Utility, System Profiler etc. I can open and close the tray by pushing the tray button or open the tray from Disk Utility. They basically wanted a blank check for me to send them the drive to have it fixed.
My question is it possible I somehow affected the drive during my last upgrade? Or is it just a dirty laser? Is it worth getting a cleaning disk? Do they work even if Pioneer doesn't recommend using them? Maybe someone knows if I could at least use the chassis and get a newer better drive?
What really bothers me is that it cost well over 2 hundred when I got it and I've used it less than
    8 times to burn.

  • Lacie DVD burner - DVDs & CDs won't mount on the Desktop

    Hi -
I've had an external Lacie Porsche DVD burner for about 11 months now. Two months ago, both CDs & DVDs stopped mounting on the Desktop. I've aleady verified that CD & DVDV mounting on the Desktop is selected in Finder General Prefs. All CDs mount fine when inserted in the internal CD burner drive.
The DVD burner shows up in ASP, iTunes & Toast as Ac NEC, model #2510A, I believe.
The Lacie product (model) # is 300759A.
Thanks, in advance, for any feedback.

  • Backup iTunes library problem using LaCie DVD Burner error message - help!

    Hi!
I just purchased a LaCie D2 DVD +-RW DVD Burner for my Mac Mini running OS 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.2. I've installed the latest LaCie drivers and iTunes recognizes the burner so no problem there. When I try to back up my purchased playlist iTunes checks the media everythings fine but when it tries to start the burn process I get this error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (-8785)." It then ejects the DVD-R. The Burner works fine with Toast, so the issue is with iTunes. I've tried using both Apple DVD-R's and Sony brand just in case that was it. Any ideas? Please?
    Thank you,
    Sam

i recently got an error message while burning a dvd with lacie. i had been using the same cd's etc. found the solution on roxio boards (which don't allow just anybody to join obviously).
the problem is iSight. it can cause problems with the lacie while hooked up to the other firewire connection. unplugged the camera and viola!!! lacie works again.
    hope this helps you too!!!

  • IDVD won't burn to LaCie DVD burner - Help

I need help on getting my iMac G5 to recognize the LaCie d2 burner I recently installed. I am using iDVD 4 and I can't seem to burn a DVD. I have created a nice slide show and it previews beautifully but when my Mac tries to burn nothing happens. My Mac has a combo drive NOT super drive. Also, what does it cost to upgrade to iDVD 5 and is it worth it? Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi srtri,
Did you install the driver provided by LaCie? see this LaCie's link: LaCie - External Storage: Hard Drives, CD-RW Drives, DVD-RW Drives, Tape, Monitors and choose the "DVD" product family.

  • LACIE DVD burner not working

I just bought a DVD burner and put in a DVD movie to watch and nothing happened. It is used so no software came with it and it did reconize the DVD, tell me i didn't buy a bad burner

    jerzee boy,
If you added the DVD to a Mac that iniatially came without one, you'll need to install software to actually play the movies on a DVD (e.g., DVD Player, VLC Player, or search VersionTracker). You may need to reinstall DVD-related software as described in Using Restore discs with computers that ship with Mac OS X 10.3.7 or later.
What model LaCie burner did you buy and from what source? All the LaCie's I've seen have come with a CD with software for use with the drive.

  • Lacie DVD Burner not working on my G5

I just got my first external DVD burner--LaCie 16x External FireWire and USB 2.0 Dual Layer DVD Burner in d2 Design (Mfr# 300978) selling for $140 in most places--and I’m having all kinds trouble. DVDs and CDs not mounting seems to be the biggest problem. I bought one last week and it worked erratically from the get-go—but it burned great discs.
So I exchanged it today for another of the same model. It worked well for an hour or so and then it began having problems mounting DVDs. Then I burned 4 DVDs on it and 2 were lemons. Also, it make a unhealthy-sounding squeaky noise when it was burning. And now it won’t mount any DVDs.
I’m I missing something here? I’m running 10.3.9. I have a 1.6 ghz single processor G5. Is there a make and model that’s now all the rage with you guys out there?
    Thanks!

    1. There is a LaCie DVD D2 updater at the LaCie support site.
    2. They are VERY media fussy - try Verbatim media, if that works the media you are using is being rejected - the LaCie's have a wealth of meaningless error messages when they are upset including "unstable firewire connection" and various "medium sense errors", and they all boil down to it hates the media you are using.
Only Verbatim DL DVD+R work so far - none of the others will, period. Ritek, Fuji, etc.

  • Problem with external LaCie dvd burner

This is not strictly a Mac question but I have a firewire LaCie cd/dvd burner that has stopped recognizing any cds. When you insert a cd it clicks and the light blinks forever. It has no problems with dvds. Could this just need to have the lens cleaned or is it on its way out? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I know that it would be better to talk to the manufacturer but it is extremely difficult to contact LaCie tech support now. One used to be able to just e-mail them a question but now it ain't that simple. Just thought I'd see if anyone else had a similar problem with a cd/dvd burner.

  • Trying to burn disk image onto LaCie DVD burner...

I have saved an imovie in iDVD and then saved the project as a disk image on my desktop. Using Disk Utility I added the image as a new image and chose burn. Everything seemed to be going fine, It said it was burning the image and when it finished a error window appeared that said device did not respond properly and was unable to burn project. Can anyone give a start to finish on how to burn an iDVD project to a DVD-+R on a LaCie burner??? Much help appreciated...

Use Toast which came with it - it burns the images fine. And try Verbatim media.

  • External Lacie DVD burner not being recognized

Maybe I'm doing things in the wrong order - I put a Sony DVD into the external burner and then click on the burn tab in DVD Studio Pro. But I get a message saying to put a burnable DVD into the optic drive. When I put the DVD into the internal drive, it's recognized. I never had a problem with the external burner. Am I doing something wrong?

I also have a Lacie burner and although they claim that one no longer needs to download their disc recording support with 10.4 or later, I had to install it because my system (10.5 at the time) wouldn't recognize it (if you recall, Mac OS did not recognize or support external burning in the old days, but is supposed to now - for whatever reason, it did not on mine without installing the Lacie software).
So, you might try first to see if your burner is listed in HD/Library/DiscRecording/Device Profiles. Mine has a file there: LaCie.drprofile from 2008. If you don't have a file there, try going to their support site and downloading the DiscRecording Support; it's an old file, but I've not had a problem with mine.
