LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini Gigabit/USB not recognized by Leopard

I have successfully setup the disk on USB using OS X Tiger 10.4.10 but I cannot get the Network Preferences Pane to recognise the disk as an ethernet device under OS X Leopard 10.5 during initial installation and configuration. Under Leopard the disk seems to appear as a modem device (telephone icon instead of ethernet <---> icon).
I am running a PowerBook G4 1.25Ghz with 2Gb RAM. Before I fully commit to Leopard I am running Tiger on the PowerBook's internal hard drive and I have Leopard running from a partition on a triple interface (Firewire 800/400USB2) 250Mb Lacie external drive (connected using FW800).
Under Leopard's System Profiler, the ethernet mini disk appears (under network>locations) with the following info:

I have updated the disk's driver to version 1.1.1 from http://www.lacie.com/uk/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10105 and have tried both the IP Configurator that came on the CD and the latest version from http://www.lacie.com/uk/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10096
Has anyone else managed to get a similar disk running ok under Leopard? I've opened a ticket with LaCie support but thought I'd throw this open to a wider audience. I'll post any feedback I get from LaCie that leads to a positive result.

OK, I'm getting desparate here, and the only way to start a new thread is to reply to a previous thread I have (Apple, please fix the forums! No searching currently either!)
I have a Lacie drive that died on me - not showing up on the network, and making odd clicking noises. As a last ditch attempt I bought an external USB drive enclosure and took the HD out of the Lacie enclosure. Miraculously, the drive spins up much better and without any noise. I see the drive and all it's partitions in Disk Utility however none would mount. From what I've read, Lacie has an embedded Linux OS, so the partitions are formatted that way.

So I tried installing ExtFSManager from sourceforge, and I now two of the partitions mount and I can see the data (YAY!) However (of course) the partition I really need is not one of the ones that mount.
Does anyone know what I could be missing, and how I can possibly get these other partitions mounted? From the listing below, it looks like the two that mounted OK are of type ext2
dk-kridan-consulting:~ dwayne$ mount
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local)
fdesc on /dev (fdesc, union)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, automounted)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted)
/dev/disk1s7 on /Volumes/UNTITLED (ext2, local, nodev, nosuid)
/dev/disk1s8 on /Volumes/UNTITLED 1 (ext2, local, nodev, nosuid)
http://idisk.mac.com/dwaynekking/ on /Volumes/dwaynekking (webdav, nodev, noexec, nosuid, mounted by dwayne)
I have tried something like:
dk-kridan-consulting:~ dwayne$ mount -t ext2 /dev/disk1s2 /tmp/dktest
/mount_ext2: device '/dev/disk1s2' appears not to contain a valid filesystem
mount_ext2: /dev/disk1s2 on /private/tmp/dktest: Invalid argument
Not sure why the others won't mount.
I would be SO grateful to anyone who can help me out.

  • LaCie Ethernet Disk mini Home Edition

I'm considering buying a "LaCie Ethernet Disk mini Home Edition" http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10994 . The specs for this device says that it has iTunes Server support.
Can I use this to stream content to my Apple TV without my computer being on. Thanks...

I have an Lacie Ethernet gigabit mini disk 500GB. Software 1.1.2.1 and Apple TV.
In apple Tv appears the itunes library shared EDmini (the lacie ethernet disk) but when a i try to connect it, apple tv tell me to introduce the passcode into the ITUNES....
And that it's the problem!!! It's not possible to introduce any code.
Do anybody know the answer for this problem?
It's possible to configure apple TV for not be necesary PASSCODE before connect to a itunes library?

  • Location Specific Automount SMB: LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini

    Hey all–
I recently purchased a LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini. I purchased it to use with .Mac backup at the house. I have an Airport network. I reformatted the drive to Mac OS X extended using Disk Utility and it seems to be working perfectly. I have been able to successfully back up via USB and Ethernet. In order to mount the drive I have to connect using command + k and then type in the assigned static ip address. It then mounts the drive on the desktop.
I then experimented with automounting the drive at login using an application called AutomountMaker. It writes a short executable script and then I added the script at login. This works also.
I would like to take this a little further and have the drive mounted only when I connect to a specific wireless network, and then dismount when not connected to that network. I am not sure how to do this. I have read numerous articles and googled the heck out of this topic with no avail. I came across the application NetInfo Manager, but I'm not sure if this is what I should be using or not. Above all, I don't know how to use Netinfo Manager.
Could someone please point me in the right direction or provide me with some suggestions? I do not know how to write applescripts nor do I know if applescripts are what I need. I am at a loss, but I would think that people have encountered this question before.
Thanks to any that can help.
    LM

I would love to know the exact same thing. I just received the same drive, and it seems wierd that you can't just add the Volume to the Login items and have it connect for you are log in, I would have expected to be able to do this.
Of course this is totally a fault with OS X not the lacie drive itself.

  • Airport Express and Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini Home Edition

    Hello -
I recently bought a Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini - Home Edition. I have it all set up on my home network when all of a sudden my Netgear router bites the big one.
I am looking into getting the Airport Express for its wireless streaming capabilities. My question is:
    - Can I hook my cable modem through the USB port on the Airport Express for internet use? If so, can I hook my Disk Mini into the Ethernet port on the Airport Extreme to access my drive? If not, I spose I can buy a regular linksys switch to split the lines?

    1. No, the USB port on the AirPort Express is solely for printer usage.
    2. With the latest AirPort Expresses you should be able to access your hard drive via ethernet, but since there is only one port you will have to have another wireless router to broadcast your internet. And you can't just have a router to split the port on the Express, it either runs in WAN mode (which is for a cable or dsl modem) or LAN mode (for accessing your hard drive). It can't run in both at the same time.
You could buy a cheap Linksys router but I can't guarantee how well the Express will work with extending the wireless network. It really sounds like you need to get the AirPort Extreme Base Station.

  • Networking 2 minis and a lacie ethernet disk mini

The very small newspaper I work for just recently upgraded their equipment. In the department I am in we received two dual core mac minis, and we are wanting to use a lacie ethernet disk mini as our "server". Basically we just need a place to store shared files so that we can both access them and they won't take up space on either one of our computers. Everything I've read said that it should work as a "dumping ground" of sorts, and we've even heard reports of other small newspapers using the same setup. We also received an Airport Extreme to use as well.
We can get the disk mini to work with either of the computers individually, but we can't get it to work through the router or the Airport so that we can both access it. So far we've tried plugging it directly into the router and using the Airport to send the signal, plugging it directly into the router and plugging our computers into the router as well, plugging it directly into the Airport, and plugging it directly into one of the computers then trying to remotely access it with the other one. We've been able to access the internet and our printer as well as each other's computer with each of these options, but it will not recognize the disk mini.
We've been working on this a lot longer than we should have, and we've run out of options. We are stuck using the old equipment (two really old Power Macs) until we figure out the problem. Any suggestions on what we might be doing wrong?

Hi. I don't have any experience with this LaCie product, but I see from their support pages there's specific software to configure the drive for network access.

  • LaCie Ethernet Disk mini compatibility

    Hello,
I have a couple of Macs in the family, and I recently bought a LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini to use a NAS drive for my house. I set it up on one of the PC's in my house, now when I try and connect to it from my iMac, MacBook and Mac Mini I get an error message saying that I don't have permission to access this drive.
Does anyone know how to solve this or have had the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
I had the same issue with ethernet mini. After contacting Lacie support they suggested a reset of the drive. This worked for a while but then would fail again. In the end I sold the drive!
Sorry that's not that helpful but Lacie didn't have any answers either

  • Lacie ethernet disk mini as a network backup

I am not a real techie. I have an airport extreme network with an airport express to extend the reception range in the house. I bought a Lacie ethernet disk mini drive. I hooked it up via ethernet cable to the airport express and use it as a wireless backup for the 3 laptops in our family. I put it in the startup for all the laptops so that it shows right up on the desktop when the computer boots. I have been using it about a year or so and it works well. It can be a little slow when I try and back up my sons 47 gigs of photos. I do not know if I even have it hooked up correctly or the best way. Any suggestions? Anyone with similar setups?

I may not be the expert but it seems to work. I manually connected to the drive by using the "GO" menu, "Connect to Server", hit the "Browse" button, select "Network", then select the drive, authenticate with password, etc. and it should show up on your desketop.
Next open system preferences, go to accounts, then Login items. Either drag the icon for the drive into the box, or hit the plus box, find the icon and select it. I have done this on the three laptops and 3 desk tops at our home. It works fine. When you start up the computer it automatically shows up on the desktop. I use it to back up files, mostly music and photos. It can be a very slow back up. I think that is more the problem of "backup". I find that I have to break the backup packages into lots of smaller packages, instead of one hugh folder like Home.
I am a little compulsive about backing these things up. I do not know what amount of data you have. I also use mediamax.com. THey give you 25 gigs of free backup space. It is slow and prone to errors but eventually I got most of my stuff on there also.
I am still looking if someone more techie than I knows if the way I am using my network drive it the best way...
    steve
That's exactly what I want to do. I don't like having
to manually connect to the server every time I
    startup the computer.
Can you tell me how to do it? What did you put in
"startup" and where is "startup"? Thanks!

  • LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini

I want to buy a NAS server to both back up my macs and share music and iphoto files. I have come accross the LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini. It got awfull reviews on CNet but ok reviews on Tom's hardware guide. Has aonyone on the forum got experience with setting it up? I would hook it to a switch which is connected to my aiport express so that all macs can access it remotely. thanks for any input.
    p

I have found the Ether Disk Mini to be reliable and quiet; I guess my only complaint is that the data transfer is slow. By default the disk is formated FAT32, which has some limitations if you are an all Mac network. It gets slightly better transfer rates when formated EXT3, which is an option.
Overall I would say its OK, or par with Tom's Hardware review.

  • LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini 250Gb

I have recently bought the above external hard drive but I am struggling to install it. Into my router, I have connected Airport, the external hard drive and a Windows Laptop. The external hard drive is not apperaing on either my mac or the windows laptop when I run the IP Configurator wizard. Can anyone let me know what the problem is?? Help PLEASE!!

Thats a nice idea Vic but from my experience the client will blame you or your system for being slow and not their drive . . . reading into this the guy is already in denial about the feedback he has been given by cjsett.
To be honest if the client won't budge you are sincerely better to show him the door, you say you are trying to build a resume one would assume this is a resume reflecting a professional service. Don't be harried into starting something that you will not feel comfortable working on, I turn people away all the time mostly cos they want a discount on rates which I just don't do.
Be fair what kind of reaction would you expect if you took a car to a mechanic and then told them how to fix it.

  • Lacie Ethernet Disk

    Hi
I've got a new LAcie Ethernet BIG disk. Im gonna use it to transfer some data from my MacPRO to Laptop via FTP server on it.
Im useing a big files (footage=big *avi files), and i've noticed it's very slow when i'm copying files from MAC > Lacie HDD (local network). Network should be 1000Mbit, but copying 300GB files took me about 24hrs, I think it's much to slow. Do u have any idea what could happend, or it's just like it is. Or Maybe u got some other ideas how to sort it out. (im not bothered about FTP site speed coz i know the limits of my connection.

    Hi maretsky :
Lacie Network disks are usually formated using FAT 32, (Older Windows format). This often can slow things down, especially with large files, although 24hrs for a 300GB seems excessive.
I have an older 100Mbit 400 GB lacie ethernet disk and I have experienced some very slow transfers especially with large files, in fact files larger than about 50GB refuse to transfer properly! I did some resarch and found that the FAT 32 was the problem.
If you just want to transfer the files then you can do this using firewire target disk mode on your macpro.
    FROM APPLE:
Transferring files between two computers using FireWire
You can use a FireWire cable to connect your computer to another Mac and have one of the computers appear as an external hard disk on the other computer. This is sometimes called Target Disk Mode.
    To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the other computer on.
Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer.
Transfer files by dragging them to and from the disk.
Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable.

  • Lacie Ethernet Drive Mini & AP-Extreme

My LACIE EDMini has been funxtioning fine connected to the Airport Extreme now for many months.
Suddenly The Macbook Pro is unable to connect to the drive through the Extreme, If I remove the EdMini from the Airport Extreme ethernet connection and connect the EdMini to the Macbook via USB, then all is well.
I have no 'additional" equipment with which to test the Airport's Ethernet connection.
Is there another way I can tell which item is at fault, the Airport Extreme or the Lacie Ethernet Drive Mini ??
    Thanks ...

solved by Lacie asndf returned to them .. Ethernet problem in the hard drive
