LaCie ext RW drive reads but won't write

I want to burn something on the LaCie ext drive but it won't work. I've done it a ton of times before, but now any one of the multiple virgin CD discs that I put in (and am sure are correct and for writing) fail to show up on Toast. Also, on disc utility it says that the CD is for "read only" -- which ain't so! Think the drive just needs replaced?? (It's about 3-4 years old.) Thanks.

Dear Cine Alter,
If the two drives are appearing on your desktop that would suggest physical connections are OK. If you have not already done so, start up from you OSX CD and rebuild your directory. Then rebuild Permissions, Restart and see how you go. This process should clean up any directory corruptions which may be responsible for the problem. You should run both of these programs monthly to ensure corruptions do not creep into your system.
If the problem persists restart from OSX CD and try un-mounting and re-mounting each disk with Disk First Aid. Restart and see how you go.
Good Luck,
Tony

My DVD drive will read and play but won't write. Device Manager says it is a Matshita UJ-850S. I have upgraded to XP Pro sp3 from vista. I suspect that it is a driver issue but I have searched and can't find one that makes it work.
Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions

Not a driver issue, or it wouldn't even read.  You are missing the program required for disk writing that Toshiba suppiles with factory installs, but is lacking in commercial versions of Windows.  It is not available as a download, only as part of the factory image.  Since you changed to XP, You'll need to buy some disk writing software like Nero or Roxio.

    Hello Alfred
As far as I know the small control light appear just if the drive is in use. In your case it is on constantly and in my opinion there is some problem with the device. Like Ivan already said try to remove it from device manager and let the system detect it again.
I am pretty sure that warranty is still valid and you should contact service partner in your country. Let them check the unit.

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • Drives Burn, but won't read newly burned disk

I've got two sony super drives, they are burning seemingly ok, but when I eject the disk and put it back in the computer tells me I've inserted a blank disk.
I can see the data burned into the disk, so I know there's something on the disk, but what's going on with my drives? It's both drives, so that leads me to believe that it's a software issue, not a bad drive.

I have posted on another section, but here are my comments repeated.
My dual disk drive fails to read some of my backup DVDs, which is a irritating. I have used a DVD cleaner, by the way. They were burnt on the machine originally and have been read in the past by both drives. I fitted 2 drives for just this sort of eventuality – and to do 2 backups at the same time, so I don't believe it is drive failure. I can restart the machine and occasionally they will read, but often not. I reduced the speed of burn from x16 down to x12 to see if it made a difference, but that is fairly inconcusive. The disks are stored 2-up in individual crystal cases, so scratching from sleeves shouldn't be a problem.
The disks fortunately CAN be read on my wife's old iMac, so I can network the data across.
Interestingly, some of the DVDs used are unbranded (plain white for printing), but some are 'Imation' brand. I would note that 'Tesco' (supermarket brand) DVD+R disks appear to be satisfactory at recalling data, for the time being.
The conclusion I draw is that it is down to the quality of the disks that are used. Don't necessarily go for bargain spindles of unbranded disks for valuable backups, although I cannot definitely say that branded ('Imation' in my case) disks will guarantee your backup security.
Judging by the lack of input on this message board on this subject, this may not be a widespread problem, but I would be interested to know if there is a definitive fix out there or if anyone can comment.

eMac optical drive: reads fine but has ceased writing.  One day it's working fine, burning DVDs, then after repeated attempts stops copying and gives the following error message:  "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR".  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.  Is this a software issue or is the drive half dead?  Get the same result with either Popcorn or Toast 10.

Are you using Roxio Toast? That error seems to be discussed a lot in the Roxio forums. Scroll down this thread:

    First, don't cross-post:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=54&thread=440288&tstart=0&trange=15
Submit your question to the forum that best suits its contents. Don't try to increase your chances of getting a response by posting the same question here, there, and everywhere. It's considered rude.
Second, if you've written a Java app that runs fine on XP, then your Java is okay. That's a good start.
I think Windows 98 is the problem. It's rather old technology now. I would say that Windows 9x really isn't an application platform worth thinking about. You might be correct - the ODBC driver might be out of date.
Is the version of Access you're running the same on both machines?

  • Time Machine won't back up to my ext hard drive - 'read only' error

My (two week old) external hard drive that is used for Time Machine has just given me this warning: Files can't be copied onto the backup disc because it appears to be 'read only'. It tells me to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. I have my doubts as this is the third EHD that has gone this way over the past month. I use an iMac, OS 10.6.8. Is this a Time Machine issue that I can fix via changing some settings - I can't realisticallly accept that two top end La Cies and one brand new G-Tech G-Drive have corrupted in one month due to their own faults. Can anyone shed any light on this? I'd be really grateful.

Please look over Time Machine FAQs & Time Machine Troubleshooting. If you don't have any luck finding your issue then please repost in the Snow Leopard forum, because TM is part of OS X and there is a TM section in the Snow Leopard forums that is where you are more likely to find someone that has the expertise you may need.

  • Optical drives reads but wont write after swap

hello everyone, I bought an iMac G3 450MHz that had had a 'superdrive' fitted. It both read and wrote CD's and DVDs. I tested it out and it worked just fine, I even made a back up copy of my Tiger DVD with it. I wanted to put the optical drive into my beloved Flower Power 600 iMac CD-RW so ,to make sure all the drive cables etc weren't disturbed, I just removed the whole caddy with the HDD plus the optical drive plus all the connecting cables, and popped it into my Flower Power. It booted up fine so I loaded (via carbon copy cloner) the contents of my original HDD. Now, when I look in system profiler, the optical drive shows up as a read/write but will only read discs. If I put in a blank disc the iMac's OS doesn't see the blank disc. Funnily enough my copy of Toast does see it and Toast launches itself. As I want to be able to burn disc images using Disk Utility this is a bit of a problem for me. I might just add, as it may be of some interest, that whoever fitted the superdrive had the HDD jumpers set to Slave but this was how it was when it worked perfectly in the 450MHz it came in so this was how I left them. The other little problem is the iMac won't sleep but I can live with that.

The reason your hard drive is set to slave is because it shares the IDE bus with the optical drive. With the stock optical drive, the optical drive is set to slave and the hard drive is set to master. However, that superdrive is probably hardwired to master, so the hard drive needs to be slave. As long as one drive is slave and the other drive is master, it should work fine.
Are you using the exact same system installation from the 450 on the 600? If not, there was probably some special driver installed to enable the all the superdrive features. Toast is a third-party app that is designed to work with many different optical drives, so such a driver would be built into the software, which would explain why it works (and Disk Utility does not).
What company sold (and installed) this superdrive?

  • Cd drive reads but doesn't burn

soo..another woe with my work emac...
so a couple weeks ago i noticed that my emac no longer will burn cds....the thing is, everything else about it is fine, it will read cds and let me import things off of them..it just won't let me burn...
when i insert a blank cd, that little window will pop up asking what i want to do with it...but when i click OK the cd doesn't show up on my desktop and doesn't show up in finder windows either...
i put in a blank cd this morning and opened up disk utility and clicked on info for the CD drive and this is what i got:

    Location : Internal

    Partition Number : 0
i'm guessing that in the two places where it says "locked" and "writable", that those should be the opposite of what they say now....
does anyone in emac world know how to change these
oh and yes i do have the latest firmware for the drive
and yes i did repair permissions...multiple times

If the CD-R discs show up in Disk Utility but not on the Desktop, start with the obvious: does the problem also occur in a different user account? it's helpful to have a troubleshooting-only account, left as unchanged as practiable from the default freshly-created settings, and use that to check and problems that crop up.
In your normal user account, check the appropriate boxes are checked to 'show these items on Desktop' in the Finder's Preferences. Try unchecking the boxes, save (close the Preferences window), then re-open and reset the show items settings. You can also use Preferential Treatment to check for dmaged user preferences files. Also check the System Preferences settings under CDs & DVDs.

  • Laptop reads but won't play dvds

I have a Toshiba Satellite C875-S7303. When I put a dvd in the drive, I can go into my computer it won't let me play it as a dvd. All I can do is look at the files on the dvd itself. It used to work then it suddenly stopped. Am I missing a driver or something?

Hi! I'm sorry but I'm not understanding what your problem is. Your saying your PC sees the DVD and reads it,but it won't play. What do you have on the DVD that your trying to play? Do you have other DVD's that you can try. Are you trying to play music or vidios on your player. If the problem is on all DVD's, then we can start from there. I'm not one to start changing drivers unless it's neccesarry. Have you tried any of the trouble shooting methods that are available and are on your operating system. W7 Or W8??. If you know when your problem started, can you restore to a earlier time when every thing was working??
PS If you want to see if you have the lastest drivers. Zip file made with PSR.

  • LaCie Ext Firewire drive issues... Strange voodoo...

So this is kind of a mystery to me... and complicated... bear with me. I am running Mac OS 10.4.4 (Tiger) and I have a Bigger Disk LaCie Firewire 400/800 d2 drive. I ran a version of Tech Tool Pro that wasn't compatible with Tiger (I know - stupid). The result was a completely unrecognizable drive to the OS. Disk Utility wouldn't even initialize it at first. I had to start up from my Panther disc and run Disk utility there and zeroed the data on the drive after recovering the data.
Now everything seemed to be peachy however, every so often, usually when I am running an application that requires the drives attention whether it be Pro Tools, iTunes, Garageband - basically any app that needs to access the drive from time to time, forces the drive to not only freeze that application, but also freezes the Finder and makes it impossible for me to restart or do anything until I literally turn the drive off. The I get the usual device removal dialogue and everything returns to normal. Force Quit does not work in this case. I literally cannot get any application affected by the drives stalling to to Force Quit until I turn the thing off.
Then when I run Disk Utility or Disk Warrior (I wont let Tech Tool do anything now) it reports that there is nothing wrong with the drive. In addition, in the Disk Utility S.M.A.R.T. status it says that is "Not Supported" when I could have sworn that before I reinitialized the disc it would always say "Verified."
In order to perhaps help the problem I have diabled Hard Disk spindown as well as turned off Spotlight for that drive. I disabled spindown because it seemed that when the drive would go to spindown that it would freeze the Finder then too.
Could it be extreme fragmentation that is causing the problem? There are no weird clicks or mechanical sounds coming from the drive. The only thing that occurs is the blue light on the drive blinks continuously - when it does that and I get the beach ball of death I know I am screwed.
So sorry for the long post but if anyone could help me with this problem I figure they would have to have the whole story.
Unfortunately I am leaning towards the dying drive theory - it would be the third drive to die on me this year alone.
Any and all help is much appreciated.

    Hi Andrew
Firstly I don't believe the S.M.A.R.T. status will show anything other than "Not Supported" because FireWire drives are not supported - only internal drives.
Secondly your description makes me think there may be something wrong with the power supply (not exactly unheard of with LaCie drives). However I am not 100% sure - but it may still be worth checking out even if it is just to eliminate the possibility.

  • Read but won't boot from CD/DVD

This is blowing my mind! I need re-install system, it's to old (using Panther sisnce it was launched). However... the CD-ROM is dead, I'm using a external CD/DVD by USB. Course, I cannot install system from there becouse I got to boot from disc to perform Installation.
Buy another original CD-ROM is to expansive, even some 3th party. Cheap CD drives got 40 pin port, not the 50 pin of iMac. So I remove the CD-ROM from there, change the cable HD-CPU by a long flat cable with 3 connectors and put a LG CD/DVD as a slave at the ATA0. Both works fine, I can read CD and DVD media, but when I try to boot from CD, the drive is not recognized as a bootable device.
I try some install discs I got (a Jaguar and a 8.6, originals). If I force iMac by booting with my little fingher over the "C", a folder with a "?" keep flashing until I let it load the system from the HD.
XPosFacto says that is not a bootable device, invalid partition map.
    What is missing?

There is no way using less than 8MB of Tiger partitium
You DO have to make the startup volume the first partition and less than 8GB in size. It may work for a while if you created one partition that extends beyond 8GB, because all of your system components are initially located below the 8GB limit. It will work fine as long as all the files needed during startup stay below the 8GB limit. However, if a future software update or software installation places or moves a component needed during the startup sequence beyond the 8GB limit, your iMac will stall during startup or give you the grey screen, as documented here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22193
You CAN install Tiger into a volume that is under 8GB. Choose to customize during installation and deselect everything you do not need, such as languages and printer drives and bundled software. That will reduce the size of the installation by as much as one GB. Then, use aliases to link things that take up space in your user home folder, such as music and photo files, to folders in the second partition. Basically, store most of your user data, except of the Library folder, on the second partition. If you can keep at least 2GB of space free, it will run fine.
It's not ideal, but these old iMac were designed to run Mac OS 8 and 9. Mac OS X did not even exist at the time, except in development. And they were not meant to have hard drive larger than 6GB. It's actually amazing that Mac OS X Panther and Tiger work at all.
