LaCie External Disk Suddenly not on Desktop

I've had a LaCie External Hard Drive (Firewire) connected to my iMac for about six months without any problems. I use it for backup, and use software (SuperDuper) to make it bootable.
Suddenly, today, it's not showing up on my desktop. The System Profiler sees it under Firewire as "Unknown Device." I've tried switching ports (I use both Firewire and USB) and testing my USB hub to no avail. I also powered down the computer for ten minutes and then rebooted.
I just read somewhere that LaCie drives have problems with the power supply, but I don't know how I would use this information.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
I've also contacted LaCie support via email (as they charge for phone support!)
Thanks,
Donna

Have you tried using Disk Utility's 'repair disk' function on the LaCie external drive
to see if some basic issue in the drive's software function could be repaired by it?
In some cases, where a bootable system in an external is involved, there may be
an issue similar to that of the internal hard disk's system, when a third-party disk
utility such as DiskWarrior, may be used to attempt to rebuild or replace a directory.
Not certain what path is best or most likely, but do know some LaCie issues include
a power surge from the computer on startup that could affect some models of LaCie
external drive via FireWire port; so if the external FW drive is not needed all the time
and the computer is attached, consider not plugging in the LaCie's FW cable if you
do not intend to use the drive. I leave one of my LaCie's in its box when not in use,
and a second one has both the power adapter and FW cable, not attached to anything.
The one issue some had, was a surge; that affected the circuitry in the enclosure. But
this is not likely to produce the issue you refer to in your inquiry. However, a replacement
power supply of similar spec to replace a suspect LaCie supplied one, is probably handy
to have as a backup to the original part. Even if from a different manufacturer.
Some of the LaCie forums have some information or ideas on what others have tried;
and when tracking down info on one model I was given (that has a mixed history) I
was curious as to what caused several of them to fail. One I bought to troubleshoot
a failed iMac G4 under AppleCare when the supposed expert authorized resellers in
my region were unable to find anything wrong, and I could reproduce the issue on
demand repeatedly, and my iMac would freeze solid. And my notes of experiences in
dealing with the computer were disregarded; so I took matters into my own hands.
The LaCie Porsche-design external FW HDD enclosure so far has been flawless; but
this other D2 or whatever (not thinking clear; getting an interruption at the moment) is
likely to fail first; starting with a noisy hard drive sound inside the case.
You may be able to try to fix the mount issue of that LaCie by using a third-party disk
utility; sometimes, issues result from improper mounting or re-mounting of a peripheral.
Can you get the external drive to mount correctly via your computer's Disk Utility? Not
sure if that is capable of fixing a mount issue, in that instance; but DiskWarrior may. A
correct version of Drive Genius may also have a tool capable of this job. I have not been
impressed with two versions of drive genius; and I was lucky to have full bootable clones.
Perhaps a more seasoned veteran of these battles can offer a more clear position to take.
Good luck & happy computing!

When I plug the Lacie external disk to my Macbook pro, my computer turns off. Whats wrong?

Something certainly is wrong.  Do not plug the external HHD in the MBP.  Male an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and bring the Lacie with you.

  • Lacie External Disk drives

Recently I bought a Lacie External Disk Drive to back up my songs made in Garageband. It's easy to just click and drag the document files to the disk drive but how do I store the contents of my address book? How do I store photos?

    Hi
I suggest you get two hard drives and run them as mirrors of each other. We had a tendancy to 'back-up' onto one drive then move - loose - edit - delete the originals so that the external HD became the single source back-up. If this fails then you'll be a very sad bunny
It's an experience I've had to deal with myself - it's no fun. It may seem like overkill to purchase two drives but believe me you'll never loose data that way.
We were fortunate to be running sporadic tape backups and recovered about 60% of the work from them - another 20% was sat on various drives - machines but the nightmare of trying to stitch together an effective backup was something I'd never want to experience again.

  • Lacie External Hard Drive Not Recognized After It Previously Was

I have a 1 Tb Lacie Big Disk External Hard Drive that I have used for a couple years now.  I have a Mac Pro, an iMac and a G5 computer that I have previously used with it.  After I transferred it between computers yesterday suddenly it will not show up on any of the computers.  I have tried different cables and inputs, computers, other hard drives with the same cables (they worked), restarting the computers, etc.  The hard drives powers on like normal and you can hear it running, the blue light comes on in the front, but it never gets the disk loaded on the computer.  There is a "auto/on/off" button on the back that I have tried switching between but nothing seems to work.  Please let me know if this is a common problem and any way to get it to work as I would prefer not to lose the information on the hard drive, especially when it seems to be functioning just fine aside from not appearing on the computer.

    Even backups need backups too.
And a 'good' case is one where you can pulll the drive out and pop it into your Mac pro drive bay.
power supply bricks are known issue.
Mac OS updates that affect those models.
LaCie almost by their own invented the term and idea "reset firewire bus" routine after all.
Years and you can assume not forever but eventually it could and will fail.
I'd pick up a "spare" or replacement unit, one with eSATA/FW800/USB3
    http://www.macsales.com/firewire
CallDigit 2 x SATA plus 2 x USB3 $139 - USB3 card and interface works better even on legacy (how long and old is USB2 now?) USB drives.

  • External drive suddenly not showing up?

    Hello--
I have one of those Book Drives (500GB) that had been working fine on my iMac. On Monday night, I installed and ran Norton AntiVirus on it. Everything worked fine. Would that be causing it to suddenly not appear on my desktop when I start up? There is power to the drive, since it's lit up green...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Disconnect it and reconnect it. If it doesn't reappear, launch disk utilities and see if it can see it. If it does, try to repair it and mount it.

  • LaCie external HD does not mount after lion 10.7.2 upgrade

After the upgrade to Lion 10.7.2, my external LaCie 2big Quadra (connected through FW 800 to a MacMini late 2009) was no more visible to the system.
This has not been the first issue with this disk since I have Lion: after the upgrade fron Snow Leopard to Lion, the "Ignore ownership" flag of the volume was resetted to "marked" (which was a mess because I had my whole home folder on it).
After the 10.7.2 upgrade, I had no chances to re-mount the volume with Disk Utility (dimmed button) but, using the terminal I was able to find it in the /Volumes mountpoint and to recover my home with the ditto command to the MacMini internal drive.
After this I reformatted the disk and now it seems to beave properly but I have seen on the web plenty of troubles regarding FW management under Lion and I am not sure if it is a good idea to trust it again.
Does anybody have suggestion or news?

My Lacie ethernet mini is not working after Lion upgrade.
Finally got an admission from Lacie that the login software won't work with 10.7 and they suggested going back to Snow Leopard . . .
Apparently the login software cannot be changed or overwritten so now Lacie drives are obsolete when using Lion.
I wish there was a way to wipe it clean and use it without the login software, but they couldn't suggest a way.
I note you may have had better luck but I don't know how to use terminal, so I may have to junk it, or possibly take out the drive and buy a caddy for it?

  • Just updated WD Drive Utilities - now all my WD external disks have vanished from desktop

I have just been using one of my 4TB My Book external disks on a MacBook AIR running 10.10.4All well and good. Only 1 installed at a time using the USB port. But the system told me there is a WD update so I installed it. Immediately after installing WD Drive Utilities and trying it out the WD disk on the desktop greyed out, then vanished completely. I pulled out the USB cable and put it back into the MacBook. The desktop icon for the WD drive reappeared, but greyed out, then vanished. So I thought it must be the new update so I uninstalled it using the WD Uninstall program. Same problem. I have an older (2014) WD Drive Utilities install-software on a MyPassport drive so I plugged in the USB for that drive, same problem, that is also greyed out and then vanishes from the desktop. So I tried the My Book again, using Disk Utilities in the MacBook. It sees the drive at first, but then it vanishes within 5 seconds. Disk Utilities says "Error: A disk with a mount point is required". I am very loathe to plug in my other 2 MyBook 3TB drives in case these also vanish or become unuseable for this same reason. I have a huge amount of data backed up on all of these disks. I think the disks are okay and maybe if I can get hold of older WD software from 2014 then I can backtrack and put it back the way it was. As a first step does anyone know where I can get hold of older WD software such as Drive Utilities (I think that was the one which did it). Or is there some files it has installed on the MacBook hidden away somewhere which I can delete?

July 2015 Solution for Multiple Problems with a New ‘My Passport for Mac’ (Note: I am posting this same message in response to several topics in this Forum, since the symptoms sounded similar to mine and I suspect WD software is causing them.) Like many other Users here, I recently bought a new external WD drive. The irony here is that I already own 3 other WD external drives, and they have been running fine for several years on our two Mac computers for photo and backup uses. Not so with this new drive. Following the WD installation steps, I first installed their software WD Drive Utilities and WD Security. And then my confusion started, because I now got the message ‘Error in RAID configuration’, even though I don’t use RAID and had done nothing except plug in the new drive. I ran the WD Drive Utility, Status Check, and my laptop actually crashed! I also saw the new drive mount at first, then spontaneously dismount after a minute or so. I even dismounted the new disk, mounted one of my older disks I have used for several years, and now it reported ‘Error in RAID configuration’, something it had never done before, and when I ran the WD Drive Utility, Status Check, on my older Passport drive my laptop again crashed. Like others here, I wasted a lot of time trying to resolve this, but let me skip all that and get right to what I did to get this new disk (and my old ones) to work correctly again. Solution which worked for me: I uninstalled the WD Drive Utilities software (the entire folder) completely. So far I have not uninstalled the WD Security software, although I have not dared to use it yet and likely never will. To uninstall WD Drive utilities, I used the free app AppCleaner from freemacsoft.net (NOT the app in the Mac App store similarly named App Cleaner; it may work just as well, but I have never used it.) Now that the WD Drive Utility is off my computer, I can use the new WD Passport and all my older Passport drives. I have run Apple’s Disk Utility, Verify, numerous times on the new drive, and using Carbon Copy Cloner I have cloned up to 340 GB to the new Passport drive, followed by Verifying it, without errors or any of the symptoms listed above. WD versions for me were:  WD Drive Utilities 2.0.2.18, which folder contained WDDriveUtilityHelper 1.0.0.16. I hope this helps others on this Forum.

  • External disks suddenly frequently 'unreadable'

I have 2 external disks that in the past few days have been connecting unreliably to my MBP.
Sometimes I can plug them both in (via a FW hub) and both will mount immediately - as they have always done. But it's becoming just as likely that a red dialogue box will appear instead - saying (I think) 'The disk you have inserted is unreadable' (with options to erase or initialise).
Switching the disks on/off and reconnecting to the MBP works sometimes, but not always.
Rebooting the MBP, with disk still connected works sometimes, but not always.
Neither of them show up in Disk Utility when reported as 'unreadable'.
Once they mount, they stay mounted.
I have eliminated the hub (by plugging them in individually) and the 400/800 adaptor (by connecting directly to the MBP with a FW800 cable).
Since both disks started behaving in the same way at the same time (one of them is only a few months old, the other maybe 18 months old - both are Lacie d2 quadras) I wonder whether the fault may be with the MBP?
I have always been able to get the disks to mount- eventually, one way to another - so far, over the past week or so. But there is no clear course of action that works every time.
Any ideas what might be happening here, and how to fix it?

It could. It could also be that one of the supplies was weak and that drive tried to draw power from the bus and eventually caused the other one to go. As much as I like LaCie drives, though, the power supplies are sub-par.
That being said, if one of the drives is under warranty you may talk them into sending you a replacement supply at no charge to at least see if that is what is causing problems.

  • External disks will not mount on new OS install

    Hi,
I just had to reformat and reinstall all the OS and applications on a imac g5 for a friend of mine. I have updated all the os to 10.5.8 and have installed user software iWork, iLife, Microsoft office and Roxio's Toast 10 and a family history software called Reunion. That is all that has been done to this new install.
I went to transfer her personal files back and I can't get any external disks to mount. They will all show in disk utility but will not mount the desktop. I have tried 2 different drives formatted in Mac OS Exteded Journalled as well as MS-Dos Fat32. I have also tried flash drives formatted in each of these formats. All of these drives are readable on several other computers I have here, including a 2008 Macbook Pro running Lion, 2010 iMac running Snow Leopard as so on.
When inserted in the iMac G5 I can see all the drives in disk utiltiy and was able to even erase and reformat a drive to differnt format ( mac extended to Fat32) without issues to mount on the other computers.
    Cd's mount just fine.
Anyone have any clues as to what's going on? Any thoughts are most welcome.
    Thanks

What exactly shows in System Profiler>Hardware>USB for those drives?
Boot from the Install Disc & see if they show up, not grayed out in Disk Utility.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
We were thinking along the same lines. While at home I dug up a firewire enclosure and put a bootable GUID formatted drive in it (that I had in one of the usb enclosures) and started her computer holding down the option key and then chose to boot from the external firewire. All usb drives are now mounting upon connection. I asume that her drive has bad sectors on it (even though the SMART status says it's OK) and is not loading all the drivers properly for USB to mount. I was suspicious from the beginning that the OS was corrupt when she first had me look at it. It was at that point that I booted it in target mode, connected to my Macbook Pro, and then CCC'd to a usb drive that I had. I then had a couple of difficulties installing the new OS. Should have known......
I am now going to put a new drive in it for her and she'll be up and running.
Thanks so much for your help and thoughts that got me thinking as well.

  • LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
    I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
    Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains
    I wish you luck

  • LaCie external drives will not sleep

Why are my three LaCie external drives not going to sleep with the new OS X Mavericks?

The only problem I have, is I cannot even mount the drives to format them!
I have a feeling that the partition map is bad. Does the drive itself report to DU? If the drive does show up, you can select that, and click the Repair Disk button under the First Aid tab. If that doesn't fix it, with the drive selected, click the partition tab and re-partition the drive. After that, I would erase the newly created volumes with 1-pass/zero out option selected and restore the data that was on the external from TM.
If none of this works or if the drive itself (not the volumes) doesn't show up in DU, you either have a bad drive or bad controller in the external case. How old is the Ultramax? Just wondering if it might still be under manufacturer's warranty. I would check to see if you are still eligible from the manufacturer's warranty and get the whole external unit replaced. If you are out of warranty, I think it likely that you need to replace that external with a new one. I've had a drive go bad in an external case (this one I could still mount but the heads would 'freeze') and the controller on another external go bad (this one, the drive would not report to DU so I took the drive out of the enclosure, stuck the drive in another case and there was no problem with the drive.)

  • TM - External Disk Drive Not Detected in Recovery Mode

    Hello Apple Lovers,
I am using the My Passport for Mac 500GB disk drive with time machine on my MacBook Air to create data backups.
I checked the disk for any corruption using Disk Utility. No issues were found. I find the disk works excellantly in terms of creating backups and restoring them inside time machine.
I cannot detect my external disk for restoring entire images of the OSx in recovery mode. For some reason, TM will not detect my backup disk in the recovery mode. I use the WD Security software on my disk to lock it, however, never before has the security lock posed any problem to me. I used to see a prompt appear for me to unlock the drive in recovery mode on attempting to access the TM backups.
Please take your time in replying to my post. I recovered my entire system last week and restored all the data using TM's twlight view. No rush! I successfully created a backup of my fresh OSx Mavericks on the MacBook Air with all the data restored using TM. I only wanted to troubleshoot this issue in case something occurs in the future that may require me to restore data using TM in recovery mode.
I browsed extensively through many of the discussions covering Time Machine. None mentioned my particular dilemma. Any assistance would be a valuable controbution not only to me, but other Apple users who may purchase My Passport for Mac drives and encounter a similiar problem.

You will need to avoid using third party software if you hope to access the disk and data in recovery mode.
If the WD software encrypts your data recovery mode will need a way to decrypt it. Recovery mode is a 'reduced mode' that only runs Apple software (not third party software) so the WD drivers that decrypt the disk will not be installed & Disk Utility or Migration Assistant will not be able to open the data on the disk.
There have been long threads that make me steer clear of using ANY Western Digital drive software with 10.9.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=0&tstart=0
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6202 <- WD had to remove software from Macs because it ruined peoples data on 10.9.
There are other threads on WD disk tools causing errors on 10.9, external hard disks do not require the use of additional software on OS X - these apps & drivers are mostly junk that is not a good idea to install.
If you really want to protect your data with encryption the features are already built in to OS X, it's called Filevault. It will encrypt your internal HD & your Time Machine backups (when the OS is encrypted). It works with Apple tools & doesn't rely on any third party drivers.
You will need to disable the 'WD security lock' and make sure the disk works without the WD software if you hope to have any chance of reading it in recovery mode.

  • External disk ejected not properly during backup

    Hi,
I'm running OS X Yosemite in my Macbook pro. I have an external backup disk made by Seagate. I have been using this disk for backup for probably 2 years with no issue. Today, I inserted the disk and saw it got mounted, and then I started a backup. After a while, a message popped up: Disk not properly. But I didn't even touch anything (the macbook pro and the external disk.) And afterward, the macbook pro will no longer mount the disk. I tried rebooted the macbook pro a few times and to no avail. Any one know what's the cause and how to fix ti?
    Thanks

Either the enclosure has failed or the HD itself has failed.
If you have another enclosure swap it out and test.

  • An external disk was not ejected properly and now i cannot see it

I have a simpledrive external disk that I use for Time Machine.  It is connected via USB.  I believe my daughter unplugged the drive without properly ejecting it and now I can't see it.  When I plug it in to the USB port it powers up, but I cannot find it, even in the disk utility.  The Mac is not seeing it when it tries to run Time Machine.  I tried connecting it to my old PC as well just to see, but it is doing the same thing there.  Any ideas for how to get this cleared up?  Thanks!

Problem solved...I decided to unplug the power from the external disk, and afterwards it showed up again.  Don't ask me why, but it worked.

  • Migrating content from an encrypted Time Machine external disk (will not easily work)

I recently purchased an SSHD to upgrade my Mac. I preferred not to completely restore from Time Machine, but rather to install a new copy of Mavericks on the new disk and then migrate my TM content afterwards. At the end of installation, Mavericks proposed the option to migrate data from a TM backup, which I chose.
It turns out that the Migration Assistant did not recognize any disk, perhaps because it was encrypted, nor displayed any way to select the volume and unlock it by entering its password. Despite what Pondini says the Time Machine backups disk was not seen by the Mac: as workaround I had to create a fictitious user, log in, unlock the disk (that was immediately recognized by the system) and then run the Migration Assistant from there (by the way, after 4 hours I finally logged into my migrated account and found out that apps were not imported at all!)
I find all this quite not…applish! I could have preferred to unencrypt the TM disk rather than
Is there anyone facing this same experience? Hope that this, if it's a bug, will be fixed, otherwise I'll have to make a TM backup on a secondary disk (which I don't own so big).

Well a google search would appear that disk utility will show you the disk regardless if it's mounted or unmounted. you're best bet would be to unmount the disk in finder, shut down the computer completely, unplug it from a power source, and then unplug the firewire...
I think this is your safest bet but then again, I'm not that worried about ejecting my disks.
you get no error messages when you right click and eject the disk in in disk utilty? you said you have a my disk, do you mean My Book by western digital? I know that they load software onto the machine for encryption purposes. have you tried ejecting the disk from there? I uninstalled said software so I can't tell you if there is an option for that or not.
