LaCie external drive plugged to airport base station?
Hi everyone!
Is it possible to do that? I have an LaCie external hard drive and I'm thinking that it would be very use full if i could plug it strait to the base station. So that way i could be anywhere in my house an would be able to access my storage all the time. Anyone as got an idea on that matter? I would use a USB connection for that because there is no FW port on the base station.

No you can't do that. The graphite and snow AirPort base station (ABS) only have Ethernet ports.
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express do have USB ports but that is only for a single compatible printer. (There are a few exceptions, see What kind of USB devices...?.)
The only way to connect a drive to a base station is if that drive is a network drive that is designed to connect to an Ethernet network.

Existing time machine backup wont work when my drive is attached to my airport base station
I did a full time machine backup to my external hard drive via usb (for speed) and then connected the drive to my airport base station. I can see the drive and the backup folder, but time machine wont continue using that backup and just wants to start a new one! Is there anyway I can make the existing backup usable without having to do the whole lot via wifi! I've looked throught communities but had no luck as of yet!
You can't switch from local to network backups. See the blue box in #E2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
And, I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up to a USB drive on an Airport Exteme is unreliable and not supported by Apple. See: Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk. -
I'm using Time Machine and a LaCie external drive to backup. I also have a 8 GB LaCie flash drive I want to use for small jobs. If I plug the LaCie flash drive in, is my Mac going to think it is the LaCie external drive and start trying to backup?

Bought new TimeCapsule March 2013. Worked fine. Now get "No configured AirPort base stations have been found." I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?
Make sure that you have AirPort Utility 6.3.1 installed on your Mac.
AirPort Utility 6.3.1 for Mac - Support - Apple
Then, power off the entire network...all devices...in any order that you want
Wait a minute, then start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the next device connected to the modem, which may be your Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time the same way until the entire network is back up
See if AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule now.
If yes, try another backup. If you encounter an error message, post back with the exact message. -

I'm trying to back up my macbook with time machine on the Lacie external driver I usualy use for this, but today my computer doesn't find the driver. I haven't done back up in 6 month.
Today, the Lacie driver is pluged and running, but the computer just does'nt find it.
what shall I do ?Some things to consider:
Is the drive mounted, i.e., visible via Finder and/or on the Desktop?
Is the drive still selected in System Preferences, Time Machine? If not, use the "Select Disk" button.
Is Time Machine still turned on (System Preferences, Time Machine)?
Can you see the drive (and mount it) using Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder)?

Problem mapping USB external drive connected to Airport Extreme on my PC
I am having a problem mapping my USB external drive in my PC running WIndows Vista. Here is what I have so far:
USB External Drive connected to my AirPort Extreme which is connected to my Century Link modem/router.
I have installed the USB drive using the Airport Utility. In the Disks section the Enable File Sharing is checked, Secure Shared Disks is set to With a Disk Password, I have entered the password in the next 2 rows, and finally AirPort Disks Gues Access is set to Not Allowed. The section below named These Settings Configure Windows File Sharing is empty. Am I supposed to put something here?
I was also told I need to map the drive in my PC, but when I go to do that via the Computer and the Map Network Drive, I get stuck where it asks me to enter a folder name. I read many of the posts which tell me I need to enter among other things the disk's ip address, but I am unable to find it anywhere. Where do I find what to put here?
Can someone please help this frustrated user?I had my USB drive on my APE working with Time Machine under 10.5.1 very reliably. A few days ago however, I needed to suspend a backup operation, and when I came back to restart it, time machine refused to mount the disk image on the drive. After several attempts to get it to connect with no luck I decided to delete the image (the sparce image file) and start over. Now TM refuses to create a new image.
BTW, on the Mac OSX hints site there have been suggestions to start a backup with the drive directly connected, then stop the backup, move the sparce image file to the root of the drive, reconnect the drive to the APE base station to get it working. I tried this again, but I think Apple has changed something in 10.5.2, because when directly connected TM no longer creates a sparce image file.
Anybody else seen this behavior after upgrading to 10.5.2? -
Airport Base Station Agent with AEX
Hi,
I bought an airport express last week and am happily listening to itunes on my home stereo. I noticed that the airport express installation loaded the "airport base station agent" that runs in the system tray. This seems to imply that it is possible to connect a USB drive to the AEX, to the contrary of the imformation provided by Apple. My question is, what is the base station agent for? And if it does not provide any functionality for an airport express alone, why did it install along with the airport utility?

The primary purpose of the AirPort Base Station Agent is to monitor any changes in the AirPort base station itself or (if enabled) to alert you that a new firmware version is available. It DOES NOT indicate that the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), either the 802.11g or 802.11n version, can support an external HDD attached to its USB port. Sorry! -
No configured Airport Base Stations Have Been found-but we are connected?

Here is an odd one...actiontec DSL Modem/Router with Airport Extreme. I applied the update, and was having problems with my external hard drive being recognized, so I reset everything-modem and airport. Now that I have, when I launch the Airport Utility, I get a message that no configured airport base stations have been found. Weird thing is I am connected, transfering files, etc. I just cant access my airport to set up my printer and time machine capsule...any suggestions?My Mac was working perfectly fine till about a week ago.It would not connect to the internet or anything.I swapped my computer out clean and still nothing so i gave up since I am new to the Mac. The next morning i turned it on and it worked perfectly fine. That night it started disconnecting me from the web every 5-10 mins but the funny thing was it kept saying i was connected to the internet. I have to keep turning off and back on my Wi-fi for it to work right & even doing that does not solve the problem. I went to my time machine to try to system restore my computer to an earlier date and it does not work.The airport utility comes up and says no configured airport base stations have been found.Airport utility will continue searching. I have no clue what Airport Utility even is when i got my computer furnished threw the college I was going threw at the time everything was already set up on it. The Wi-fi connected instantly. I have a MacBook Pro (OSX) with this software OS Lion. I don't have the money to get it professionally fixed so trying fix this issue on my own. Would a factory reset solve the problem?.

How do I share my DS4600 USB on Airport Base Station?
It's true I'm not the most Mac savvy, but everything I've read seems to indicates this is plug & play, but so far not for me.
I have a SmartStor DS4600 (by Promise Technologies). It's set for RAID 0, just recently formatted with "Journaled HFS+".
So, it's definitely an Apple partition.
I plug it into the USB port on the back of the Airport Base Station (2nd Generation)(running version 7.6.3).
According to documentation, I should just see the volume for the DAS show up in my Finder, but I don't. Only if I plug it in to a USB port on the actual computer. (MacBook Pro, OS 10.8.3)
I do see my Airport in Finder, and I do have a volume called "Data" that I can access... but no other disks. I also thought maybe the extra HD space would be added to the existing Airport Disk. It isn't.
Sort of at a loss, and I can't find any documentation that explains how to troubleshoot.
The ultimate goal is to use the DS4600 to hold my iTunes library. I doubt that information helps, but it couldn't hurt.That information helps. If you want to use one of the SmartStor's disks as a repository for sharing your iTunes Library, then do not configure that disk as a RAID. Format it with Disk Utility using the Erase tab. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the correct choice.
Connect it to your Time Capsule, then use AirPort Utility to configure access requirements for sharing it on your network. It should appear as a shared volume in the Finder, available to all your Macs as you thought it should.
I also thought maybe the extra HD space would be added to the existing Airport Disk. It isn't.
Correct. There is no way to do that. The only way to increase the capacity of a Time Capsule's hard disk is to replace the Time Capsule (or its disk, if you are amenable to disassembling it) with a larger capacity model.
If you also want to use the SmartStor as a RAID, that is another story, and you should probably attack that problem separately. -
External Drive connected to Airport Extreme, need Time Machine 3 Mac's Help
I own an Airport Extreme and just recently added two new Macs with the Time Machine feature to our household. I would like to use Time Machine to backup to my Airport Extreme that has a 500 GB hard drive connected. It seems Apple has this blocked since they have released the Time Capsule version of the router. Is there a work around this feature so I don't have to go out an purchase what I basically have already got? Please help. We would like to upgrade our older macs to Leopard and us the same system to back them up as well. Please advise. Thank you.

Airport Base Station No Longer Found in Network
Since applying the 10.5.2 upgrade yesterday my home network, routed via a cable modem and a formerly dependable original Airport Base Station, is no longer recognized by Airport Utility... and the Airport icon in the finder is continually scanning. I have found, however, that my network shows up as an available option in Network System Preferences...with a Connected status and an IP address (10.0.1.3).
I can connect to the internet and read email from my main iMac because I am also connected directly via ethernet, but my laptop can't find the Airport base station, either. I have reset, unplugged, restarted, check connections and cables, etc. Both Macs easily find my Airport Express, however. I'm concerned the new update no longer supports the original base station...
On another (unrelated?) note, my external backup HD (250GB Seagate), connected by Firewire, is now recognized as "Read Only," whereas it has always had read/write permission (confirmed in Get Info). So now my backup is failing, too. Sorry to introduce a new topic, but I'm frustrated!Firmware is uploaded onto the base station itself and is different from AirPort Utility. Although you probably cannot confirm it without connecting to the base station, I think it highly unlikely that you use a firmware version earlier than 6.1.1 (which came out in 2004). If newer firmware is contained in software on your computer, AirPort Admin Utility and/or AirPort Utility should have prompted you to upload it to the base station, whereas if it is not on your computer, Software Update (assuming you use it) should have prompted you to obtain it. Even if your firmware is older than version 6.1.1, the reset procedure is virtually the same--in that case, you won't see the AX's status LED flashing rapidly a few seconds after you start holding the reset button, and you will just need to hold the reset button for 10 full seconds.
Once you connect to the base station, you should be able to see the firmware version (e.g., "Base Station Vx.x" where x.x is the firmware version) on the opening screen of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow, when the base station is highlighted. I imagine that AirPort Utility shows similar information. I believe that in AirPort Utility, you can also check to see if newer firmware is available from Apple (choose "Check for Updates" in the AirPort Utility menu). To the best of my knowledge, the most current firmware version for AirPort Express is 6.3. -

I often receive these insufficient USB power for devices messages a dozen times even when I do not have devices like camera, Ipad, Ipod, and Tascam digital audio recorder plugged in. Is there a way to troubleshoot these USB routers or should I consider that one of the routers may be defective and replace them?

Airport base station lets Mac print but stopped letting my PCs print, why?
The only thing I've done differently lately was download the new upgrade for OSX, which was yesterday. Up until now, my airport base station has been operating fine. I have it directly connected to my G4 and also use it for my Sony wireless laptop (new) and a Sony desktop (new). The desktop is located in another room and connects via Airport Express. The laptop is on my desk, next to my G4. The printer is by my G4 and laptop. And the Airport Extreme is on the wall above my monitor.
Anyway, yesterday, about halfway through an 11-page document, the printer stopped printing to my laptop. It will print, btw, if I unplug it from the Airport Extreme, reconfigure the port from an IP/TCP and plug it into my laptop. What would cause it to stop printing via Airport Extreme? My DSL Internet connection still works on all four computers.
My printer is an HP color laserjet 2550L. I called Hewlett Packard this morning and talked to customer support. I was informed that HP does not support network connections and could not help me because I was using a Mac product, the Airport Extreme. So I asked, what if I wasn't and directly connected the printer to my PC? So they explained how to configure the port for my printer, and it does print now, but it won't work on the Airport Extreme.
I also restored my PC to the way it was last month, just in case I had downloaded something that interfered, but that did not help the situation.
I also tried using emulation software that let me go to a Windows-based Web site through Citrex on my Mac, and I could access the Web site on my Mac, but I could not print. It prints otherwise from my Mac, though. This is just the weirdest thing.
Do you think my Airport Extreme is defective? It's pretty new. Maybe 2 or 3 months old and has worked fine up until now.

Also, you may want to consider installing Bonjour for windows on your windows machine and set up the printer via the Bonjour printer configuration.

AirPort Utility not detecting Airport Base Station nor Airport Express
Earlier today, we were listening to music on multiple speakers (computer and airtunes / airport express) as we always do. Nothing new here. Stereo speakers stopped and computer lost connection with Airport Express. Couldn't get it to reconnect. Unplugged airport express and plugged it back in - no dice. Hard restart.....AirPort Utility detected it once and I tried to reconfigure. Got an error message at the end of configuration.....
Now.....
Airport Utility doesn't even pick up the Airport Express. Not only that, it doesn't pick up the Airport base station, which we use for our internet connection (and I'm using right now). Both are old - Airport base station is the round small anthill looking one (probably about 6 or 7 years old) and airport express is about 5 years old. Never had a problem with either. Airport Utility is 5.4.2.
For now, Airport base station is working, but I don't have access to it via Airport Utility. Airport express just flashes amber......Welcome to the discussions!
Not sure what to suggest that you may have not already tried. I would recommend that you start with the base station first to see if you can access the settings in AirPort Utility.
Have you tried connecting an ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN ports on your base station to see if that will help? Power down your base station and computer before you hook up the ethernet cable. If no luck at first, leave the ethernet cable connected as sometimes the base station will simply "appear" after a few minutes.
If still no luck after several tries, your only alternative is to hard reset the router back to factory defaults and try to reconfigure it.
Once you get the base station back, you can use the same procedure on the Express to see if you can reconfigure it. -
I've had my Airport Base station for years. Now I'm trying to add a wireless printer, and I don't remember the original WEP password assigned to my base station. Is there a way to find it, or can it be reset somehow?

If you forget your base station, Time Capsule, or network password
If you forget the password for your base station, Time Capsule, or network, you can reset the device and select a new password.
While the device is plugged in, use the tip of a pen to press and hold down the reset button for a few seconds. The device and network passwords are temporarily reset to “public.”
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a Windows computer.
Select the device you’ve reset, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the password if necessary. The default password is “public.”
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Base Station.
Give the device a new password, and then click Update.
If you do not make your changes within five minutes after resetting, you must reset the device again.
