LaCie External Harddrive not sleeping

Since upgrading to Leopard my two LaCie harddrive's wont go to sleep like they used to under Tiger.
I have checked "put to sleep when not in use" in the system preferences but this doesn't work.
Is there a way to set a time?

I have the Porsche 500GB Mobile and it only spins down when I shut it off. It stays spinning on computer sleep and on eject. Do I need to have the "Put hard drive(s) to sleep" box checked in energy saver? I don't see why you would as that should control behavior only when the computer is awake ie. using energy that could be saved. Also, there is a firmware update on LaCie.com, but they say it hasn't been tested with leopard yet. Does anyone know if that update is safe/needed/resolves sleep issues?

How do I retrieve my imovies or idvds from the Lacie external harddrive.?

Hi,
My Lacie External hard drives have been saving away for years, but only now that my computer has run out of space am I wondering how to retrieve the files saved on the Lacie HDD.
I am unable to make any more imovies as I have no space, so I have started deleting imovies on the macintosh HD but am very nervous about losing them.
How do I retrieve my home movies which I have made on imovie and idvd after they have been deleted from imovie but are saved to the Lacie external harddrive?
Some of the files saved to the Lacie HDD are .m4v files or DVDproj files.
Is it through itunes, imovie or by clicking on the file - Some open and I can view the movie and some don't?
When I click on some files it says "File not writable",
When I clicked on the iDVDapp file, the message said "There is not enough room on Macintosh HD to copy all of the requested files. itunes will copy as many files as possible".
While viewing the files on the Lacie HDD, do they automatically save back onto the macintosh HD causing the macintosh HD to run out of space again?
When I open Lacie and go into imovie, the Lacie logo appears at the bottom of the project library but it does not display the saved movies and I can't click on it so what does this screen mean?

LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains

I need Lacie external harddrive help

I've been using my Lacie Rugged external harddrive with my Macbook for a while. my macbook crashed for somereason and I'm trying to use the harddrive on the gateway computer in the house. The first time it was plugged in the computer said that a new thing was found and it was installed but now I can't find it on the computer to use it. theres a chance that it might not be working correctly because there is a dent on the fount of it, but its probably just that I'm not looking in the right place for it.

ok well for anybody elts that may need an answer to this ... go to the start menu, right click on my computer. click on the manage option. go into computer managment, storage, disk managment, your harddirve should show up on the bottom of the list (the list will be at the bottom of the window) and um, right click on it ... then I forget. If you need to you could probably figure it out. I found the instructions for this at the lacie website .... but i think formatting might erase stuff on it and then you can't get your mac stuff off of it onto a pc. thanx for your help though.

Can somebody please please help me! External harddrive not readable due to dumb mistake!

What is quite possibly one of the dumbest decisions i ever made in my life, I disconnected my external harddrive from my imac & plugged it into a laptop that has Windows 7 to trasfer footage from there to my imac more quicker. I clciked an option that allowed me to assign a letter to it to it can be read by the laptop (however, I would of needed to format the harddrive which I thankfully didn't). Please understand that erasing the entire harddrive is NOT an option! I am a filmmaker & I have so many years of work on there, including videos, music, & documents.
When the computer starts up I get hit with "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"! I tried Disk Utiity & even though it recognizes the drive's existence, I cannot repair or mount...nor can I access any of the files! I also tried Diskwarrior & got "directory cannot be rebuilt, the file system is unsupported".
If theres anything you guys can do to help me, please do so. My life was on that harddrive & losing it would be the most devistating thing I could ever experience. A movie I finished not too long ago...is also on that harddrive. I'll send you a full video completely thanking you for your help!

Call a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers. Their services are very expensive, but without backups, you have no choice but to pay whatever they ask.

Old Library on External Harddrive not recognised on new PC for iTunes

Hi, I've just bought a new pc after my old one gave up one me. I have my iTunes library saved to an external harddrive and I've changed the Library name to that of my harddrive location in Prefences>General>Library Name. I also changed The Preferences Advanced tab>iTunes Music folder location to point to the external harddrive location where my music files are and no music appears in my library. All I want is my library off my ipod to be replicated back into the itunes library as i've a lot of history here. Can it be done?

External harddrive not show correct files

i've not had this problem before. i have an external harddrive and lately some of the files have been incorrect. and now it's been happening to most of the files on the drive. for example if i click on a video file a different video will show. it's usually on of about 3 videos, so if i click on 30 different video files, the same wrong movie will show up about 25 times. other videos won't open at all. the same for a lot of pictures on the drive and other types of files.
the drive is probably suffering from some kind of corruption, but i'm not sure if the part of the drive that points to a file is corrupted and can be repaired maybe. i've ran disk utility and it says the drive is fine. has anyone else had this issue and come to a conclusion short of running a recovery program?

HI sorry thats what I ment. The disk utility(application) in the folder utilities. The strange thing is that Yesterday the hard drive did apear there. I thought maybe it has something to do with NTFS application. As before I had installed this I could only read but notwrite to files on the hard disks. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the software,,,,,now the hard disk does not appear anymore in disk utilities .....I'm getting futher away from an solution .... :-( what can this be ? ever heard of an problem like this ? I thank you in advance for taking your time to look into this problem.

Exporting to external harddrive "not enough disk space"

imac Mac OS X (10.3.9)
I'm having several problems while trying to export my entire iphoto library as a backup to an external harddrive...
The main on is I am getting a "not enough disk space error". There is 95 GB available on the harddrive and the library is approximately 20 GB.
I've been doing it in smaller increments b/c I thought it might be an issue of not enough space on my mac's harddrive as I only have like 6GB left (the reason I'm backing up and deletiing photos) but it gets to a certain point and then says no more.
I've been using the export function, but I've also tried just dragging and dropping them and get the same error.
I'm runnning iphoto 4.0.3.
Of course I've tried restarting to no avail...
Any suggestions would be welcome...
Another issue is the filenames. Of course many have the same names from the camera. Is there a way to get them to automatically put them in folders on the harddrive. I've been doing this manually and it's tiresome.
Finally, is there a way to get it keep the "date created" information. When I look on the harddrive it says they were all created 12/31/1903! That's going to make it very difficult to find something later should I need it...

If you have rotated, cropped, or edited any pictures in iPhoto, the originals are all kept inside the iPlibrary in case you want to "revert to the originals"... it's good to know it's there, but you are less likely to revert to an original, since there's a reason you edited the pics in the first place.
Anyway, those originals are taking "wasted space" in your iPlibrary.
If you want to reduce the size of the iPlibrary from 30GB to close to 20GB, (because the thumbnails will remains and must), then you should get rid of the superfluous duplicates! I did.
if you want to clean you iPlibrary and get rid of duplicates, you can use iPhoto diet. Free download.
My advice, is do a drop and copy the entire iPlibrary to the external, as suggested by eww, because imagine a day, when the internal HD iPLibrary crashes on you, and becomes not salvageable, you will have a mirror copy, to copy back to your internal drive, with all it's albums, names, favorites ,star ratings etc....... If you export to the external HD, and if your iP library crashes on you.... you are to re-import from scratch.... and you will go %#%^&$&@$$@#
I have been there myself... now I have 3 differents external HD that I back up to. 9 different iPlibraries, and 3 copies of each on 3 separate HD..... Photos are too important to me.....
Reading this discussion group, you see many people writting thing such as "my library is gone what do I do?"

Airport Express external harddrive not shown

I tried to connect my external harddrive to the apple airport express (Version 7.5.2). I already reformat the harddrive to FAT32. But still my Airport Utility programm doesn´t show it. It not even shows any drive in the pull-down menu.
Google couldn´t help me.
Any ideas how to connect to the harddrive?

The Airport Express only supports Printers... unless the apple website is telling porkys. I have got one of these on order (arriving soon, hopefully), having a external h/disk would be sweet for this product.

Transfering to external harddrive not completing

everytime i try to transfer a large file (15gb) to my external harddrive it has an error at like 14gb and won't complete. a few weeks ago i transfered a 20gb file w/ no problem but the past two weeks it hasn't worked. i've tried it w/ two different external hds an iomega and a western digital. any ideas what i can do? it says error code 1309 or something like that.

That is a strange problem.
But, since you have tried it with different drives, then there is some common factor here.
First, I would try repairing permissions Using Disk Utility.
Go to Hard Drive --> Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility
Then, select your hard drive on the left (your main hard drive), and then choose "repair permissions".
Second, try a restart. If you haven't rebooted your computer in a while, then this may clear out any weird bugs that have cropped-up.
Third, I would try a new cable. Make sure it is a good high-quality cable. And, perhaps even test it with another computer.
Fourth, I would go into the System Preferences ( menu, then System Preferences), and then the accounts section.
Set up a new user account, and try logging into that account and try it again. Perhaps something in your settings is corrupted.

Lacie External Drive not recognized

I just unpacked and turned on my new iMac Desktop. Then I plugged in my Lacie Desktop external drive (with all my files, iTunes and iPhoto data) to move all of my files. But the Lacie Drive doesn't show up anywhere on the iMac when plugged in.
I've tried turning both the drive and iMac off and on again
Disk Utility does not see the drive
i tried all USB ports just in case one was defective
the drive does show on older laptops, incl. one with Lion installed
I've contacted Lacie tech support but they aren't responding
What can it be? what can I do??

Why are you repeating yourself? That's unnecessary and disconcerting. As for your LaCie issue, return it and get one from a manufacturer that is responsive and makes things that work. FWIW, I never use USB HDs. They're slow when compared to FireWire ones. I roll my own and never have issues. These are the latest combos:

External Harddrive not detected after 10.4.10

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro with an external Maxtor harddrive. Up until yesterday I never had a problem connecting it, but after then update today I can't get it to connect. It connects via USB.
If someone can tell me where to look I can provide technical data so perhaps I can get this solved. Anyone?

As a practice I always remove external drives from my computer prior to software update and this particular drive that was causing me trouble was put away, so I know that's not the problem.
I spent about an hour on the phone with AppleCare and got all the way up to the senior most rep but we didn't have any success. The rep was very responsive and seemed truly interested in figuring out the cause of the problem. He made extensive notes and documented the problem and said that he was sending it off to the "engineering team" to investigate further and hopefully would have more information for me early next week.
If you have AppleCare I would STRONGLY encourage you to call as well and report your problem. If nothing else it will allow them to gain more documentation on the types of hard drives and systems impacted and the more people who call in will encourage them to release a patch or update.
As a side note, although it doesn't resolve the problem, I was able to mount my drive by physically removing the drive from the USB 2.0 case and putting it in a FireWire case instead. It's not a solution and I would like to get both drives and cases up and running, but it did allow me access to my data. Though I'm sure not everyone has the ability to swap out a drive case so it's not a practical solution for most.

External Harddrive not recognised on GX740

Hi,
Recently my External HD "wesern digital My Book Studio Edition II" does not come up in my GX740 notebook.
I have tried all usb connections.
As far as I understand the HD uses windows-drivers, (not from cd)
The Harddrive works fine on my other computer.
Does anyone have suggestions what I should do/try to fix?
Do you think it is a Hardware thing "maybe reinstall usb drivers"
or maybe a Windows issue??

Thank you for the answer.
Unfortunately the disk is not shown in "ctrl panel / Administrator tools / disk management" so I have nothing to partition, it cant find the disk.
Also the disk pop up directly when i plug it into my other notebook.
The computer does make that familiar sound when you plug in a new device in an USB port (on the MSI computer) but maybe that is just the computer recognising that something is plugged in to the usb-port.
Hopefully somebody can help

LaCie external harddrive

A month ago I purchased a LaCie 200gb external hard drive and was using it with my powerbook G4. When I pressed the power switch to start the computer the hard drive automatically would power-up, and when I shut down the laptop. the hard drive would power-off.
A couple days ago I purchased a new iMac G5. I hooked-up the LaCie drive but it does NOT automatically power-up or down with the iMac.
Is there a way to do this?

I find that a feature, not a bug: the FireWire plugs remain "hot" meaning you can charge your iPod without turning your iMac on. Don't know how (if?) you can disable it - others?

Lacie External superdrive not working

Hi I have an older Lacie Design by FA Porsche Superdrive connected to Mac Book Pro running OS 10.5.1 via Fire Wire 400. I am trying to burn a DVD using Toast 8 but I keep recieving Error message -50 'the connection is unstable' and the DVD won't even attempt to burn. This is odd because Toast recognizes the drive and can read from it, but will not write to it. I checked the Lacie website and found some firmware updates, but they didn't help. They said they were updates for OS 10.3 and later, but maybe 10.5 is too late? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am completely stuck. Thanks.
