LaCie external harddrive

A month ago I purchased a LaCie 200gb external hard drive and was using it with my powerbook G4. When I pressed the power switch to start the computer the hard drive automatically would power-up, and when I shut down the laptop. the hard drive would power-off.
A couple days ago I purchased a new iMac G5. I hooked-up the LaCie drive but it does NOT automatically power-up or down with the iMac.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks in advance.

I find that a feature, not a bug: the FireWire plugs remain "hot" meaning you can charge your iPod without turning your iMac on. Don't know how (if?) you can disable it - others?

  • How do I retrieve my imovies or idvds from the Lacie external harddrive.?

    Hi,
My Lacie External hard drives have been saving away for years, but only now that my computer has run out of space am I wondering how  to retrieve the files saved on the Lacie HDD.
I am unable to make any more imovies as I have no space, so I have started deleting imovies on  the macintosh HD but am very nervous about losing them.
How do I retrieve my home movies which I have made on imovie and idvd after they have been deleted from imovie but are saved to the Lacie external harddrive?
Some of the files saved to the Lacie HDD are .m4v files or DVDproj files.
Is it through itunes, imovie or by clicking on the file - Some open and I can view the movie and some don't?
When I click on some files it says "File not writable",
When I clicked on the  iDVDapp file, the message said "There is not enough room on Macintosh HD to copy all of the requested files. itunes will copy as many files as possible".
While viewing the files on the Lacie HDD, do they automatically save back onto the macintosh HD causing the macintosh HD to run out of space again?
When I open Lacie and go into imovie, the Lacie logo appears at the bottom of the project library but it does not display the saved movies and I can't click on it so what does this screen mean?
    Thanks.

Sorry I am unclear where the backup is located.. On a time capsule??
Recovery of iphoto library you need to use pondini.

  • LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
    I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
    Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains
    I wish you luck

  • I need Lacie external harddrive help

I've been using my Lacie Rugged external harddrive with my Macbook for a while. my macbook crashed for somereason and I'm trying to use the harddrive on the gateway computer in the house. The first time it was plugged in the computer said that a new thing was found and it was installed but now I can't find it on the computer to use it. theres a chance that it might not be working correctly because there is a dent on the fount of it, but its probably just that I'm not looking in the right place for it.

ok well for anybody elts that may need an answer to this ... go to the start menu, right click on my computer. click on the manage option. go into computer managment, storage, disk managment, your harddirve should show up on the bottom of the list (the list will be at the bottom of the window) and um, right click on it ... then I forget. If you need to you could probably figure it out. I found the instructions for this at the lacie website .... but i think formatting might erase stuff on it and then you can't get your mac stuff off of it onto a pc. thanx for your help though.

  • LaCie External Harddrive not sleeping

Since upgrading to Leopard my two LaCie harddrive's wont go to sleep like they used to under Tiger.
I have checked "put to sleep when not in use" in the system preferences but this doesn't work.
Is there a way to set a time?
    Thanks in advance.

I have the Porsche 500GB Mobile and it only spins down when I shut it off. It stays spinning on computer sleep and on eject. Do I need to have the "Put hard drive(s) to sleep" box checked in energy saver? I don't see why you would as that should control behavior only when the computer is awake ie. using energy that could be saved. Also, there is a firmware update on LaCie.com, but they say it hasn't been tested with leopard yet. Does anyone know if that update is safe/needed/resolves sleep issues?
    thanks

  • I am using a Mac Book Pro. Now I am trying to read a LaCie 1 TB external hard disk. The MacBook Pro hangs while reading the LaCie external hard disk.

I am using a MacBook Pro. I have my movies stored on a Lacie 1 TB external USB harddrive. (42 Movies in HD - 538 Gb in use). When I try to read the LaCie external drive, my MacBook Pro is "hanging". Only a "hard reboot" helps to get my MacBook Pro up and running again. The MacBook Pro starts to read the drive, but half way he "stucks". I can read the LaCie drive without any problem om my windows machines, so the LaCie drive is O.K. Anyone familiar with this problem?

The drive is formatted NFTS, otherwise the drive can not handle large files under Windows. And yes, I can see the drive in Disk Utility.
I can even see the files (partly) untill my system is hanging.

  • Need Help setting up a Fully-Accessible External Harddrive on Network.

Alright Ladies and Gentlmen of the Apple Support Forums,
I'm fairly new to servers in general - but I thought I'd be able to figure this one out on my own...I guess I was wrong
I am the tech head of a video studio that needs to share a single 12 TB external 3.0 drive on the entire network. I want all to be able to read, write, and delete as easy as possible.
    Here's what I have:
    - 20mb/s UP and 20 mb/s DOWN coming from Northstate into my modem.
    - I have my modem connected to my new Airport Express.
    - I have connected my airport express to my Mac Mini server (new).
    - I also have it connected to a 24 port netgear switch.
    - My switch is connected to about 11 stations across the studio.
    - My LaCie 12TB drive is connected via USB 3.0 to the mac mini and is available to view in the "shared" finder window for all computers. In other words, everyone CAN see it.
    - I have set everyone up with their own username and password to connect to the server. I have set permissions through the server (file sharing) to allow all users to Read & Write to the external Harddrive.
    My problem:
It seems as though any file or folder created by one computer is not accessable by another computer - and vice versa. One user has NO permission to write or copy a file into a folder that another user has created on the external drive.
    My needs:
I really want this to work freely. I want all users to be able to write, read, and delete any file or folder on the External HDD through the network. I don't want to have to set every folder created on the external to sharing or have to manage permissions at all.
Ladies and Gentlemen! What am I doing wrong?!

Underlying the Mac OS is unix. By default when a file or folder is created, it is owned by that user. Other users don't have read/write permissions.
I suggest reading a bit about unix permissions work.
Unix assigns permissions for 3 categories for each file and folder. Self, group, and other (think of other like the permissions you would want a complete stranger to have).
If all your users are members of the same group, you can use unix permissions to allow anyone in the group to have r/w permissions. You'd first need to define a group, and then assign all the users to that group.
Lastly, you'd want to associate all the existing files you already have to that group.

  • Recently purchased a Lacie Rugged Harddrive yet im struggling to move data from my macpro to the harddrive anybody know where im going wrong?

After purchasing a lacie drive Im struggling to move data and drop it onto my rugged external harddrive........................infact it wont do it atall?? is there a way of formatting the drive on my mac so it works or is the external hardrive not so rugged afterall??

Heollo there, first of all plug the disk to a free working port on your Mac (I suppose it's USB2). Then, check if it mounts on the desktop. If not, launch Disk Utility: on the left, you should see the external drive along the startup disk.
Careful! There is a device tree for each disk! Top: device. Lower: formatted volume.
You select the top disk icon and select "Partition". Reformat the disk as GUID partition scheme. As a disk format, go for "Mac OS Extented (Journaled)". Let the Mac erase the drive and - at last - it should mount on the desktop.
If the Mac does not let you erase the disk, or should you not be able to even see the device, launch System Information and check that the disk is being seen by Mac OS X (under USB or FireWire, depending on how you plugged the disk).
Let us know how it goes.

  • Applying password to an external HardDrive - possible?

    Hi
I use a Lacie 250 external HardDrive to backup my files and such. Is there anyway I can apply a password to this drive so that when I plug it to a computer I have to enter a password before I can access the files?
I have turned off the auto log-on on my MacBook and would like to be able to protect my files on the external drive as well.
    Mikkel

    Hi Mikkel,
You could create a password protected disk image on your external hard drive. This would require you to enter a password before accessing the files. I believe there is another thread floating around telling you how to do this.
    Good luck,
    Jason

  • Seagate or Toshiba external harddrive?

I have a macbook pro that runs on mac os x 10.7.5. I recently bought a Seagate back up plus external harddrive thinking that it was a portable one as oppossed to the Toshiba Canvio Desktop. However, I just took it out of the box and turns out it also needs a AC power cord. My question now is if I should return it and buy the Toshiba one (considering that it has the same 2TB memory and is 20-30 dollars cheaper). Price wise, I should return it, but my plan is to use the drive as a back up for capture scratches and render files for Final Cut, so I was wondering which one would perform better in an editing situation? Or if should forget those brands and get the Western Digital Elements External Harddrive.
    These are the products, specificaly:

    http://www.staples.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Desktop-2TB-Desktop-USB-30-External-Hard-D rive-Black/product_982534#revs_content

All things considered, I like Seagate drives better than Toshiba and MUCH BETTER than Western Digital.
I've four Seagate drives in my LaCie 2big Thunderbolt drive caddies and haven't had a problem with them. In the past I've had nothing but trouble from Western Digital drives. My favorite drives are Hitachi but I only buy bare drives and I've no idea what they have in the way of externals (altough I do know that they are used in G-Technolgy drives).
I would stay with the Seagate were it me...

  • Need external harddrive advice..

.. I need advice for a good external harddrive. One with firewire 800 would be a plus, 160-250gb is what i am after. I've had bad luck with external harddrives in the past so i'm hoping someone can reccommend somethign that will last and hold up. Lacie? Western Digital? I dont know which way to go..

I have used WD MyBook Pro (USB 2.0, FW 400 and 800 connectivity) 500 GB drives ..a pair for one year with zero problems and I just got a second pair. Set up was very easy.
I also use OWC (Other World Computing) 160 GB portable external (powered off the FW port). I use this to back up my internal drive of my C2D without difficulty. Also very easy to use, and thus far robust and fast! It does not run very often and using SuperDuper, the drive is bootable in case my internal drive fails...but not has fast as the internal but fast enough for crises mode.
    Good luck.

  • DON'T want to designate ENTIRE external harddrive to Time Machine

Hi I have a LaCie Porsche 250GB external harddrive for my MacBook Pro and it's in HFS+ format. I've already used up a lot of it and I have only like 73GB left on it.
    My questions are:
    1. Would 73GB be alright for Time Machine to use and;
    2. Would Time Machine format and overwrite my other stuff which are ALREADY on the harddrive? Because I do NOT wish this to happen.
    Thanks!

that really depends on the amount of data you want to back up. I would recommend to leave for TM at least 2-3 times more space than the total amount of data you are backing up.
I've heard other make that suggestion, and it's certainly appropriate for some users, but not all, maybe not even most.
The 'correct' size for a TM drive depends on a) the size of your drive, b) the rate at which your drive is being filled or changed and c) how far back you want your backups to go.
For example: I have a 160GB drive in my Macbook, that's mostly growing from email. I have an external 160GB drive for TM. My main drive is only about 60% full, and that's not increasing quickly. My TM drive has plenty of room to hold years of backups at the rate I'm going.
For users who are consuming disk space at a much faster rate, a larger TM drive makes sense. But I wouldn't depend on TM for long term storage of data which has been removed from your main drive, as it's not unheard of for TM to just stop working with an existing backup set, requiring it to start again from scratch.

  • Can't get ibook to boot from external harddrive when hitting option key

    Hello,
After owning a Pismo Powerbook that had it's hardrive replaced --twice--, i'm all about backing my shtuff up for my ibook.
I picked up a Lacie d2 external harddrive today, and used Disk Utility's Restore function to copy everything from the ibook to the drive. I can boot off the Lacie without a problem when I select it as the startup disk from sys preferences.
But I can't get it to boot from the Lacie when I depress the Option key while rebooting or starting.
    any suggestions?
    ibook g4 933   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Let's be sure  you are doing it correctly:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.  Select the desired boot drive (you will have to wait about 20 seconds before you can make the selection) then click on the large right arrow button.  If this is what you are doing and it does not work, then you may need to re-prep the external drive and re-clone.
    1.  Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the above re-clone as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination.  Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Problems capturing onto an external harddrive

I just got a new Lacie Brick external harddrive, and looking around these forums, it seems that was a bad choice. I have no problem capturing footage right onto my computer, but when I try to capture onto the Lacie then Finalcut freezes and won't shut down. Is there any way to fix this or should I just get a different harddrive?

    > However, it
can be used as a back up drive....
    And an excellent one too!
There's a lot of rubbish talked about LaCie external hard drives - my "Big Disk" 500 GB unit has worked hard, flawlessly for a year or so now.
Unfortunately (maybe because they're small) hard drives get moved around and abused during use. If they aren't fan cooled, they can overheat if there isn't free air space (and common sense) around them.
Moving an external HD while it's working is a pretty sure way to wreck it - and so is allowing it to get too hot.
Use your brick - it's a pity it isn't Firewire but it will still be a valuable asset to you for backup as X said.
