LACie external HD no longer appears on desktop, can't remount it

Help-
I have a LACie external hard drive, connected to my PowerBook G4 by USB. The computer recognized it until today when the computer crashed. It now won't recognize the external hard drive. I have turned everything off/disconnected/waited/reconnected and it still doesn't work. The LACie also doesn't show up in the disk utility for remounting. It does show up under the system profiler, but there's nothing I can do with it there. The LACie is recognized when I plug it into other computers. Any suggestions as to how to get it to appear on my desktop again?
Thanks.

It might be a hard drive problem. Try booting from your Tiger DVD and running Disk Utility from there to check the hard drive. Disk Utility is a limited app, though; ideally you should be using DiskWarrior or Prosoft Drive Genius. I haven't tried Drive Genius, but did buy DiskWarrior a while back, and it has been worth every penny, saving my hide a number of times.

  • External Hardisk does not appear on desktop

My external disk no longer appears on the desk top when I reboot. I used Disk Utility to attempt to find and repair the disk. The Lacie disk appears in the list on the left. When I click Verify button, the following messages appear:
    "Verifying volume “disk1s6”

    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.

When I click the Repaair Disk button, I get:

The disk still does not appear on the desktop even after rebooting again.
I have searched the posts and found some similar complaints. Most responders recommend using a 3rd party application like Disk Warrior (~$90). I am reluctant to spend for a remedy that may not actually help. Does anyone know a solution using freeware or command line operations?

DiskWarrior uses a special proprietary technique. It usually works. Even when it does not work 100%, it may restore the disk to a point where it can be mounted in "preview" mode to copy off critical data. There are no freeware apps, or UNIX commands, that replicate what it does.
Maybe try this... See if you can make a disk image of the volume or volumes with critical data. It may not mount to the Desktop, but maybe you can use Disk Utility to make a disk image and save it to your internal drive. If that works and the disk image mounts, at least you can access your critical data. Then you can reformat that external drive and restore from the disk image.

  • Time Capsule Icon No Longer Appears on Desktop

Two weeks ago I had AT&T U-verse cable, internet, & phone installed. As part of that installation they installed an AT&T router/wireless combination. The ethernet cable that was previously connected to Time Capsule is now connected to the AT&T device. There is no longer any ethernet connection to Time Capsule. The Time Capsule icon still appeared on my desktop and I manually performed back-ups from my Windows applications to Time Capsule. Time Capsule went from displaying a constant green light to displaying a flashing yellow light. That worked for several days. After about a week of that there appeared on my screen a 'wizard' of some sort recognizing the status of Time Capsule. It said this 'wizard' would eliminate the flashing yellow light. I followed the steps through the 'wizard' and at one point the flashing yellow light turned to constant green. There were a few more steps in the 'wizard' and when it was finished the flashing yellow light reappeared. The next time I tried saving files from Windows I could not connect to my w: drive, and the Time Capsule icon no longer appeared on my Mac desktop. I went into Airport Utilities and there is a box checked that should display the icon properly. Any ideas what's happening? How do I restore Time Capsule so I can back-up my files. Thank you.

    Welcome to the discussions!
I don't have 10.6.1 yet, but have noticed this happens very occasionally on my MacBook Pro, but not on my iMac. Simply resetting Time Machine on my laptop has done the trick.
    Open System Preferences
    Click on Time Machine
Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
    Click Use for Backups
If that does not do it then delete the "com.apple.TimeMachine.plist" file. It's located as follows:
Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
    Restart your computer
Then perform the same steps as above to setup Time Machine again.
The resets will not affect any of your backups.

  • External HD doesn't appear on desktop sometimes

Sometimes my external HD doesn't appear on my desktop (connected with Firewire).
It spins up, and all I generally have to do is turn it off and turn it back on again for it to appear.
But obviously I wish it would just work the first time.
Using 10.6.1 on a Mac Pro, external drive is OWC Mercury.

Re: the link I think all the cables are fine, like I said all I have to do is turn the drive off and back on again and it will work.
    DU doesn't find any errors.
By reformat by you mean wiping the drive clean and reinstalling the system and then all my data? Sounds like a lot of work for what might just be a smaller problem (hopefully), I'd like to solve this but it's not worth it to me to do that much quite frankly (combined with the fact that I think 10.6.1 has some gremlins in it, so I'm not sure the problem wouldn't come back anyway).

  • External Hard Drive Not Appearing on desktop

My external HD has disappeared from my desktop. If I connect it via FW it does not appear in disk utilities or system profiler but if I connect it via usb it appears in both. I've switched out the cables, tried different ports and reset the PRAM and NVRAM. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to a fix?
    Thanks in advance

    Scott:
I take it from your explanation that even though it appears in all three of the utilities that my only remaining option is to use DataRescue II. Correct?
Let's say that it is the only one that occurs to me at this time of night
The demo version will at least show you that the data is still there. Another option might be to use SuperDuper to see if you can clone the User's Folder, or indeed the entire volume to an external firewire HDD, then using DU to reformat and erase the HDD (post for directions if needed) and clone back from external firewire HDD.
Yes, the drive does show up in sidebar in all three of the utilities I mentioned.
Is it possible to run Repair Disk in Disk Utility and see how it comes out? Or if you have done it already, what does it say?
While in Disk Utility, select the Manufacture ID of the external HDD and then look at the look at the icons at the very top. Is Mount dimmed or active? If active, click on it to mount the HDD.
Also, what happens if you try to Option boot?
If anything else occurs to me I will post back in the morning.
    Cheers

  • Thunderbolt external drive no longer appears

    Hello Souploops,
I would also be concerned if my external drive was not appearing after the software update.  I found two articles that have steps to help troubleshoot connection issues with Thunderbolt devices:
OS X Mountain Lion: If a Thunderbolt device isn’t working
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11408
OS X Mountain Lion: Check your device’s Thunderbolt connection

  • LaCie External Drive No Longer Recognized

My LaCie d2 Hard Drive (Extreme) suddenly is no longer recognized. This may or may not have anything to do with my copying several files to it just prior, with much memory still available on it. I rebooted my computer twice and it was still not there. Is this a crash? Should I kiss that drive goodbye? If not, any suggestions?

Bizarre. After some time it now appears, and apparently with all files on it. I thought the cable was already secure on both ends, but perhaps it appeared after tightening them just slightly. Do you think that was it?

  • External hard drives not appearing on Desktop

I have three external hard drives, none of which are showing up on my Desktop. All three drives are mounted, and I can navigate to them through the sidebar in Finder windows, and the contents of the drives are all fine and intact. In Finder preferences under "Show these items on the desktop", "External disks" is ticked. I've tried unmounting the drives using Disk Utility, then mounting them again, but they still don't appear. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Create a new admin user account, log into it, setup Finder's prefs to show all HDs, and see if the issue persists.

  • External drive icon not appearing on desktop

Hi - I have also posted this in the Time Machine forum as this is where my problem started. New iMac yesterday - replacement for faulty iMac which I had backed up using Time Machine. Reinstall from Time Machine effortless - no problem. Downloaded available software updates and 10.5.7 onto new iMac. No problem until I go to do another backup. Time Machine does not recognise external drive and I get "volume could not be found" message. At this point in time the external drive icon is showing on the desktop. Give up and go to bed thinking I will reformat external drive in the morning and start again
This morning, I boot up the machine but the external drive icon has disappeared from the desktop. Unplug external HD from usb and plug in again. No icon on desktop although it shows in Finder and Time Machine.
Anyway - I turned Time Machine off and then pointed it at the Ext. HD - went to back up now and magic - did complete backup and has done a second subsequently. Seems to have created a second backup folder separate from the one created by previous machine from which I reinstalled. Still no desktop icon! Switch iMac off and on again - still no desktop icon. So why - the Ext. drive is recognised and works so why isn't an icon for it appearing on the desktop?
Please help - I need answers to these weird happenings
    Thanks
    Ann
    .

Problem solved and it was so simple - just had to go to Finder, Preferences, General and tick the box that says external devices. Desktop icon has returned:-) Don't know why it became unticked but everything now is working absolutely fine (as far as I know lol) Hope this is the start of a good relationship between me and my new Mac!

  • LaCie external HDD no longer recognised.

I have a LaCie 500Gb d2 external HDD connected to my intel iMac via firewire 400. This has been working well until now. The HDD icon has disappeared off my desktop and while disk utility shows the disc present, it won't allow any communication with it. What has happened??? I have a lot of stuff on the external HDD that I would like to get back!!

    Hi
The first thing to try is to shut down your Mac and leave it off for at least half an hour. Disconnect the drive while the Mac is off. Start your Mac again and once running normally connect your drive and power it up. Hopefully, this will do the trick.

  • Icon for zip drive no longer appears on desktop. How do I get it back?

I use 100 MB zip drive for backup on my Emac -OS 10.4.11.  It works fine for years. Zip drive started clicking a lot lately when used but would then setlle  down. I decided to disconnect it from power and USB port to give it a fresh start. When reconnected it doesnt mount. It does not appear in Disk Utility-it does appear in System Profiler. Ordinary CDs load properly except an eMac OS X install disc 1 also doesn't load. What can I do get my zip drive back on the desktop?
I note also that eject button on Zip doesnt work (I use a paper clip). Alsdo --although icon doesnt appear occasionaly lights on Zip flash briefly as I use the computer -

A couple of things about clicking ZIP 100s:
    1) One version of clicking indicates a failed drive. Iomega had a program a long time ago to handly this but I sure its expired by now.
    2) I've had a couple of times when I got the clicking but it turned out to be a bad disk, not a bad drive. Try different disks to see if anything gets better.

  • My external drives no longer appear in Finder, BUT they do appear in Disk Utility (and network drives appear also)

Hi folks, I hope someone can assist.  I have a Mac Mini 2011 running 10.8.5.  All has been well. Suddenly, when I plugged in an external flash drive (USB), nothing showed up in Finder.  Things I have done:
Confirmed SideBar and other Finder preferences are set to show/reveal external, network, and internal HDs
Tried multiple flash drives and hard drives, using drives formated in GUID/OSXExtended as well as FAT and NTSF. None show up.
Confirmed that the Hidden flag in terminal is not set.
Note:  I can see the drives in Disk Utility, but the partitions/volumes are gray and will not be mounted.
Note: Network drives and internal drives appear and work as expected
Note: My network Time Machine also appears and performs as expected.
The only suspect I can think of is a small, free app I installed this morning called Caffein (which manages the sleep mode).
Also, I loged out and switched to another user account on the same machine (that I use solely for the purpose of troubleshooting), and it was similarly affected.
    Thanks in advance!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    diskutil list | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • Camera no longer appears on desktop

I've been connecting my Canon IXUS 870 to my Intel iMac to download photos to iPhoto. It all worked fine until yesterday - I'd simply plug the camera in, it would appear on the desktop and I would launch iPhoto where it would appear and off I'd go. Yesterday, it didn't appear on the desktop, system profiler showed it connected to the keyboard USB but couldn't find it anywhere. iPhoto couldn't find it either. I had to install the Canon software to access the camera and download pics, which is a lot slower than iPhoto.
    What's happened??

    Look at
    USB and FireWire Quick Assist
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1151?viewlocale=en_US
Common fixes for USB device issues (unrecognized, etc.)

Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.

  • LaCie Little Disk - no longer supported? I can't open my backed up files

I plugged my LaCie Little Disk into my MacBook pro.  It comes up on my desktop but when I try to open any of the backed up files I get this message from Finder: "You can't opne the application iPhoto because power PC applications are no longer supported" OK is the oply option!
The files were backed up in 2011 from a Ibook G4.
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

What format is the external drive? - to use for the iphoto Library it MUST be Mac OS extended (journaled)
I am not sure of the external drive format.
Then look - select it in the finder and get info
The LaCie instructions say the LaCie Setup Assistant Software must be launched, and to click on the drive icon when it mounts on my computer - But it goes directly to my backed up files, which then won't open (and not just iPhoto).
I have no idea what you want to do here - if the drive is correctly formatted then you need no set up - if it is not then you have a problem because set up will erase it  --  what ever it is it iPhoto is not involved - if you need LaCie support you need to contact them

  • CD doesn't appear on desktop, can't eject from drive

    Hi All,
I just got my new iMac today, love it! But when I inserted a CD into the drive, it won't appear on the desktop, and I can't eject it. I've tried these things:
    -Restarting
-Restarting after pulling the power plug for 20 seconds
-Restart while holding down the mouse button
-Restart while pressing down the command-option-F-O keys
-Opening Disk Utility and selecting File > Eject (it's dimmed)
These are suggestions I found from other Discussion posts. Do you have any other suggestions? The last suggestion I read was to take it to the Apple store, I hope I don't have to do that.
From the number of posts I've seen on this problem, it seems to be common!
    Thanks,
    Lizzy
