LaCie External HD

LaCie Rugged USB3.0 / Thunderbolt won't show up on iMac or MacBook Pro.
iMac is early 2008 running OS X 10.3.x Yosemite.  MacBook Pro is mid-2010 running the same OS. Neither have thunderbolt or USB3.0, so I'm using the USB3.0 cable from LaCie and plugging it into the USB2.0 ports on both machines.
On both machines it powers up, and you can here the hard drive spinning, however it does not show up in Finder or in Disk Utility. I've downloaded the driver from LaCie and have installed it on both machines. Still no worky.
I had the Rugged plugged into my Time Capsule for about a year and it worked fine.  Before that I had used it on my MacBook pro and it worked fine.  However, now that I'm trying to use it on the MacBook and iMac it won't work on either.
I've poured through many forums and can't seem to find a fix, any thoughts?
Thank you,
Tony

I've had about two dozen LaCie drives I've used and deployed, the Ruggeds work on everything I put them on from Apple and we go back and forth between iMac here and PowerBooks at home. I've only had issue with power supplies going bad on the same series a few years back but I think you have a two year warranty on the drive.

    no.

  • Now that I saved everything to my LaCie external hard drive, do I need to erase my IMAC hard drive?  My computer is still slow. :(

My computer is still slow after uninstalling Macbook pro and buying a LaCie external hard drive and saving everything to it.  I repaired disk permissions.  Am I supposed to erase original hard drive?
    Thanks!

Not yet, get a second hard drive, or a second medium to backup your data.  You never want there to be less than two copies of your data at anytime.  If for some reason one fails, you'll always want a backup.  Clone with Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner.  Note, if you have an early 2008 Mac, it is not PPC, but rather Intel.  PPC indicates the chip is G3, G4, or G5.    You can double check this by going to Apple menu and selecting About This Mac. Once you verified your Mac, I can ask a moderator to move this thread, so you don't have to crosspost.

  • My Lacie external hard drive will not back up on Time Machine. Says there's not enough space. This has happened with every single external I've purchased. Thought TM was supposed to delete old backups??

My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

  • I am using a Mac Book Pro. Now I am trying to read a LaCie 1 TB external hard disk. The MacBook Pro hangs while reading the LaCie external hard disk.

I am using a MacBook Pro. I have my movies stored on a Lacie 1 TB external USB harddrive. (42 Movies in HD - 538 Gb in use). When I try to read the LaCie external drive, my MacBook Pro is "hanging". Only a "hard reboot" helps to get my MacBook Pro up and running again. The MacBook Pro starts to read the drive, but half way he "stucks". I can read the LaCie drive without any problem om my windows machines, so the LaCie drive is O.K. Anyone familiar with this problem?

The drive is formatted NFTS, otherwise the drive can not handle large files under Windows. And yes, I can see the drive in Disk Utility.
I can even see the files (partly) untill my system is hanging.

  • LACie external HD no longer appears on desktop, can't remount it

    Help-
I have a LACie external hard drive, connected to my PowerBook G4 by USB. The computer recognized it until today when the computer crashed. It now won't recognize the external hard drive. I have turned everything off/disconnected/waited/reconnected and it still doesn't work. The LACie also doesn't show up in the disk utility for remounting. It does show up under the system profiler, but there's nothing I can do with it there. The LACie is recognized when I plug it into other computers. Any suggestions as to how to get it to appear on my desktop again?
    Thanks.

It might be a hard drive problem. Try booting from your Tiger DVD and running Disk Utility from there to check the hard drive. Disk Utility is a limited app, though; ideally you should be using DiskWarrior or Prosoft Drive Genius. I haven't tried Drive Genius, but did buy DiskWarrior a while back, and it has been worth every penny, saving my hide a number of times.

  • LaCie external hard drive no longer readable after being connected to a PC

    Hi all,
First post here and I really worried.
I have a Lacie external drive which I normally connect to my Mac - no problems.
Tried to connect it to my Windows 7 pc to transfer some files and it wasn't recognised. It installs the drivers and says its ready to use, but doesn't appear as a drive. So I read about it and the advice was to go to Computer Management - Disk Managment and mark drive 1 / partition as active and then assign a drive letter. So I did that and then Windows tells me that I must format the drive to use it.
Obviously I don't want to as I can't loose my data - my wedding pictures are on the drive!
So I've plugged the Lacie back into my mac, and the drive is unusable and says I need to format too. Even the repair function doesn't work.
Now I've read the another post and downloaded Test Disk (I'm working off my mac though as I know the drive worked and all my files where added from the Mac).
Its currently Anaylsing the cylinder but its taking a long time. 24hours and still on 30% (1TB drive, firewire)
I've read the help guide but once this stage completes, having read the next few steps, I'm lost.
Any ideas on what might have happened and what I need to do next?
I'll report back once its finished its 'deeper search' and analysing.
Or do I abort the above process and do something else?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

  • Macbook no longer recognizes my lacie external drive

My macbook no longer recognizes my lacie external drive.

Use a data recovery product such as the ones listed here, and then get a replacement drive.

  • I am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??

i am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??

You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

  • My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive

    Hello,
I need you help with this one. My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive. In the System Profiler (under FireWire) the drive is listed as:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Connection Speed: Unknown
Can anyone help me to correct this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!
    Nat

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!
    Thanks,
    Nat

  • My LaCie external  CD-DVD burner no longer reads DVDs

    Hello
Since the upd my iMac Intel to snowleopard (now 10.6.4) my LaCie external burner (d2) (DVD 16 x 56 x CD, DVD DL) will no longer play a DVD (blank, burned or commercial).
We hear some clicking then nothing ...
The problem also exists on the MacBook of my son.
The profile is well in the file "VendorSupport.drprofile" and it is well recognized in System Profiler and Disk Utility.
The burner box fitted to the LaCie is NEC 3520 A.
The power supply seems to work. The connector type is USB 2.0 or FW 400 in the selection and reading problem arises in both.
The CDs are well read and burned (CD-R and RW).
I confess to being a bit lost to this phenomenon ...
    Ideas?
    Thank you in advance
    Jacques

There are actually optical drive cleaning kits. Often just a spritz of air from one of those little cans of compressed air and into the disk slot will do the trick.

  • Is anyone else receiving "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when attempting to transfer files from laptop to LaCie external HD?

This issue has only developed since upgrading the OS to Mavericks. I've been unable to save files to my LaCie external hard drive. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've tried looking here for the code -.50, but nothing comes up.

I have the same problem. I am not able to write to my external drives when I wake my computer (I can read from them though). I get the same message as you do. My only solution is to force eject my drive and reconnect it. I am not sure if this is related to Mavericks but this did not happen before. Anybody else experiencing this or have a better solution?

  • HT201250 Backup using lacie external drive with time machine

Hi, I recently backed up my macbook with a lacie external hard drive using time machine.  However, when i try to open my photos, which says there is 11.67GB there, nothing happens.  It only opens an empty file.  After my backup i deleted the photos from my laptop, after all i was trying to clear disc space on my macbook.  Can i resolve this or can i open the file in a different way?  Help

One should always confirm copied stuff is where they think it is before deleting the original stuff. See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • IMAC doesn't recognize lacie external hard drive

    Friends,
I have an imac 2013 3TB fusion drive running Mavericks.  I have a lacie external quadra drive USB 3.0. When I turn on the drive, the computer does not recognize it.  However, if I restart the computer, it then will recognize the drive.  Why is this?  Is there a preference or something I can change?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Your HD might be corrupted, try going to spotlight, look up "Disk Utility" select your external and verify disk, there might be some errors on the disk, if so, then click repair disk, try that and get back to us.

  • I have a LaCie external hard disk. I do not know how to retrieve photos from iphoto that have disappeared. I do not know how to use Time Machine

I have a LaCie external hard drive. I also have Time Machine. I somehow have "lost" almost all my 5,000+ photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. I would appreciate someone giving me directions on how to retrieve the photos from the external hard drive or Time Machine.
The last thing that I did that is different from my normal routine was to trash duplicate music tunes from iTunes. I cannot figure out how that would have caused my photos to disappear.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I remember being cautioned to never do anything with the iPhoto Library. Should I have clicked on the iPhoto Library and then Restore?
I do not know "how" items are being placed in the LaCie external drive, just that it shows a backup running about every hour. I have taken a snapshot of the Time Machine Preferences I would you to see. Maybe that would answer this question.
In March 2011 I had to have hard drive on my iMac replaced. I had been using a Seagate external drive for backups. However I was not using Time Machine. When the Apple guru was helping me restore all my files etc on the new hard drive he was not familiar with Seagate and recommended I purchase this LaCie and use Time Machine. I never had any problem retrieving items from the Seagate backup. It was very straightforward. As I mentioned previously, I just don't have a clue with the LaCie and Time Machine.
I hope this is not TMI.
