Lacie firewire drive wont boot

Hi there,
Since i got the Lacie 200G firewire from Lacie back last November, I have been using Silver Keeper 1.14 for back up my powerbook. Starting new year, the Lacie drive is acting strangly again. it allows me to back up(I am using back up sets), but everytime when i boot from the Lacie back up drive, the system just froze at the gray Apple Logo. i noticed a twitch that shifted the grey apple logo downwards a little bit, and the spinning wheel didn't even showed up. i tried to zero format for the partition, zero format the whole HD, and nothing worked. Everytime i want to start back up, there will be an error message from Silverkeeper, "Failed to Register "Lacie Back up Support" for Privileges. I don't remember i encountered such error message before til recently.
Oh, and when i try to repire permission on the back up partition, it seems that every files needs to be repire premission. The list of files is so long that i don't think it's a good idea to post it here...
Is my drive broke again? Sigh.................
Shan

I believe you need to download and install a firmaware update from LaCie. My extrnal drive would not consistently appear after installing 10.4, so I went to the support section of the LaCie website and downloaded the latest firmware. It now works fine.

  • 10.4 Installation on External Lacie Firewire Drive

    Hi -
I have a number of Macs running 10.4 and each has an external Lacie firewire drive attached, with a partition for an external startup drive. I recently bought a new Lacie 250 GB Porsche firewire drive to rplace a smaller Porsche model, but I cannot install OSX 10.4 on it because the install disk does not recognize the external drive as an installation source. I have upgraded the firmware on the drive but that has made no difference. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem might be and help me figure out how to install the operating software on the external drive? Thanks for your help.
    Shelly

Thanks for your reply. The drive is actually being used on a G4 tower that's about 6 years old. I partitioned the drive into two sections: about 7GB for the operating system and the remainder of the 250GB for backup purposes. Neither volume shows up on the Tiger insdtall disk as a source for the installation (by the way, I also tried it on my G3 iBook, with the same results).

  • Formatting LaCie firewire drive - Powerbook G4

Hi, I have a 40GB LaCie firewire drive that is doing something funny on Disk Utility. It only shows as having 18GB available, and I have tried to delete it using Disk Utility to no avail.
+Question: Can anyone suggest a way to again totally wipe and regain my 40GB?+
Also, any suggestions on how to expand my 1GHz PowerPC G4 12" Powerbook with 768 MB DDR SDRAM would be welcome, as I'd rather keep this machine going well at the moment and save up for a new 'book, love the black version!

    Hi Matt,
Thanks, I just did that, and it now shows:
    *The top level says:*
    Disc description: LaCie Group SA
    Connection: Firewire
    Total capactity: 18.6GB
    Write status: Read/Write
    SMART: Not suported
    Partition scheme: Apple Partition Map
    *Next level says:*
    Number of folders:4
    Capacity: 18.5GB
    Available: 18.5GB
    Used: 27.9MB
    Number of files: 7
Er, I definelty thought it was a 40GB. Could it be I was mistaken, and it's only a 20GB?!!

Can anybody help me, or suggest what I need to do? my GRaid 2tb external firewire drive wont turn on, it has all my work on it.  I am stuck!! tried another power suplly and still will not work.  Any help?
Not sure what to do now.  Data recovery have said £450 + vat.  Is there nothing else I can try.?
    Help!

This forum is for Mac hardware made before 1998, and gets very little traffic, so I doubt you'll find anyone here with experience with a newer drive made by a third party.
We don't know your Mac model or OS version but, if the G-Raid is a Thunderbolt drive, you can ask in the section for your computer model or the forum for your OS version. However, were it mine,  I would start here:
    http://www.g-technology.com/support/support.cfm
Please let us know what Mac model you have and we can ask the hosts to move your post to a forum where you are more like to get views and help.

  • Lacie firewire drives in series?

I've been recording audio to a Lacie firewire drive. My internal Raptor drive is full with plug-ins. I need another drive for just plug ins. Has anyone had any success with 2 Lacie drives in series? One for audio recording and the other streaming samples. I was hoping I could put BFD2 on the 2nd firewire, and some of its sample libraries. Thanks

Sure external devices can cause issues with your Mac if it's causing some kind of hardware problem with the Firewire bus-- drawing too much power, over or under voltage etc.. Some iMacs just have problems with the FW ports themselves. Sometime resetting the SMC will fix it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US
I have two FW800 drives from OWC daisy chained and I have not had any issues at all. I would try and isolate the two drives if possible to see if the problem persists. Disconnect one of the drives for a few days and use just one drive. Then switch and connect only the other drive for a few days. Then maybe try one of them on FW800 and the other on USB. The FW400 and 800 share the same bus so it may not be any differnt testing one on each if it ends up being a power issue. I wouldn't think it's a power issue though because the external drives have their own power and should not be drawing any power from the computer. But you never know

  • Xserve won´t mount LaCie Firewire drives

I booted our Xserve with two Lacie´s 1 TB Firewire drives attached and after the boot xserve wouldn´t mount the drives. I tried FW800 and FW400 connections, re-attach drives one-by-one, 4 different cables and also with another Xserve but still no avail.
The drives mount perfectly well on a desktop PowerMac G5 but the both of the xserve´s seems to repel the drives.
Any suggestions? our backups are running on the drives so this is kind of a urgent issue:)

of course, how stupid of me and how clever of the machine:D After unlocking the Xserve the drives mount just fine.
    Thanks William, once again:)

  • External Lacie firewire drive slow access

Around 3 or 4 weeks ago, for seemingly no reason, the 250gb external firewire Lacie d2 drive attached to my PB started running slowly.
To give a bit more detail and example: I run iTunes off the drive and it runs fine. BUT, on most occasions, when I doubleclick the drive icon to open it, I get the beachball of doom spinning away for at least 30-40 seconds before it opens the window - the music playing then cuts out while it's accessing. Not what I expect from a firewire drive. I also hear the little beep from the drive quite often when it's trying to access.
It's getting silly. Although it will quite happily play music on shuffle for the entire evening without cutting, as soon as I try and use the drive like you would any drive (ie. navigating through files and folders), it does the beachball for 30-40 seconds thing every couple of windows. It's made it virtually unusable for everyday working (in the way that I'm going to throw it out the window if it carries on).
I can't remember if it started happening after the 10.4.7 update... I didn't do anything different to cause it, so am perplexed. Haven't tried Lacie forums yet either.
    Any ideas, people?

I've now read that adding external drives to the privacy window in spotlight is a bad move. Besides, I need to find stuff and shouldn't have to turn it off (I always thought that after the initial spotlight indexing at first installation, it would just update rather than re-index the whole drive, so it shouldn't be that slow anyways... right?)
So, I've run diskwarrior, and it's optimized. Still the problem persists. LaCie tell me I have to update the firmware, but I'm a bit worried at the risk this poses to the data on the drive (ie. a sh*tload of music among other stuff). I have nowhere to put the 100gb on the drive, as I'm running a PB with a 60gig internal.
    Risks?

  • Rebooted computer, now firewire drive's boot partition is gone...

    Here's the story.
First, I run a Mac Mini (1.25Ghz with 1GB of RAM, booting from a 160GB firewire drive). Everything was running stellar until last night.
Got home from work last night, noticed my computer wasn't seeing the internet, despite the fact that my home network was functioning. So, I decided to reboot. After hitting reboot once, Tiger tells me it cannot reboot because something had not quite (something loader, I think, I forget). I wait a second, and hit "reboot" again. This time, it goes to blue screen with spinning wheel (not the mouse spinning wheel), and the screen goes back.
Computer powers down and comes back up. On startup, I get the grey screen with the "I can't find your OS" flashing icon.
I reboot the computer again, get the same thing. Load in my Tiger disc, boot from the CD. From the startup screen, I go to Disk Utility, and it shows that Disk Utility sees my firewire drive (it tells me the enclosures connection hardware information, and my hard drive disk size), but it does not show my partition where all my data, especially my boot data, resides.
Disk Utility will not let me repair or verify the hardware I see (since there's no partition it can see). I have DiskWarrior here at work, so I connected my hard drive to the computer here, started the firewire, and got the error "Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. [Initialize] [Ignore] [Eject]".
I hit ignore, and ran DiskWarrior, and it cannot see the partition either, so it can't help me rebuild my directory structure.
So, what do I do now? I'm a Mac and PC guy, and an computer technician, so I know my way around, but I honestly get aggravated when just a simple reboot hoses my entire system. Kinda goofy, y'know? Anyway, any ideas would definitely be taken into account.

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Booting from firewire drive

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Typically it is not a good idea to rely on an external drive for booting because you never know when cables or power to the external device might fail or the Firewire port might need resetting. Regardless, take a look at the hints at the beginning of my FAQ here:
    http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html
And if none work you may need Prosoft Data Rescue to recover information off the drive if the data is not backed up. Note, any writing you do to that drive prior to attempted recovery will lessen your chances of recovery of information.

  • 2 questions: iMac after power failure & Lacie firewire drive keeps spooling

OK, my power blinked the other day and my iMac was off, but to get it to power back up, I had to take power completely away from it for a few seconds before it would respond to the power button at all.
Next, my Lacie external drive keeps spooling for a split second and stops for no reason. As far as I can tell, no programs should be accessing it. It does this about every 10 to 15 seconds. I can still access it when I want and it seems to be working fine, but I know the continuos spooling and stopping cannot be good for it. Any help you guys can give would be appreciated.

    Hi John
You don't say or show in your profile, but for the Intel iMac's first reset the SMC (System Management Controller) exactly following all the instructions in the link below.

  • External 300G drive wont boot up...

I have an external 300G maxtor firewire drive that was working fine and all of a sudden it does not want to mount and show up on the desktop. a message comes up saying that mac osx can not read disk with the box to check to reinitialize. i have a lot of file files on this drive and this problem is killing me. I do not want to erase everything at the moment. I open disk utility and i see the drive in the list however when i go to check disk an error message comes up as well as when i go to repair disk. i have this drive on a G4 1.25 tower. if anyone has a suggestion as to how to get this drive to munt agin i would be so thankful.

  • Firewire drives wont mount since I went from Tiger to Leopard

I copied my original tiger drive to an SAT internal drive using Carbon Copy. Wiped the internal drive and did a clean install of Leopard to this drive. All went well, except my firewire drives will not mount. If I restart from the Tiger drive firewire drives mount no problem so I do not think it is the ports.
I have a Glyph 3 GT key bay that holds 3 glyph drives plugged into the firewire port on the back that mounts fine. Any other firewire drive does not mount, either from the front, daisy chained to the glyph or remove glyph and connect strat into the rear port.
    Please help anyone.
    Thanks

First step would be to reset the PRAM/NVRAM as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • Original Mac mini and LaCie firewire drive

    Hi all,
I've tried looking through previous posts but can't find anything that seems to relate to my problem.
I've bought a LaCie 250Gb external drive and a DVD burner - both firewire and tried hooking them up to my mini but I can't get either to work.
Tried them individually and swapped cables - also tried with a different cable but still no joy !
I know the port is ok because I connect a video camera and my iPod through it.
I'm guessing that the firewire is 400 and the devices are probably 800 - could this be causing the problem ? Do I need new/different cables ?
    Thanks for your time

  • After updating to 10.4.6, external firewire drives wont mount consistantly

I have a swappable external hard drive casing that has two slots. Since updating to 10.4.6, the drives will randomly dissapear from the desktop, then will not remount. It takes a lot of swapping firewire cables around, usually ending up with the same configuration and multiple reboots to get them back. Even then, I can't depend on them to stay mounted. I have had this problem infrequently in the past, though not recently. This last update seems to have resurrected the ailment. Any guesses?
    Thanks mac people.

I'd find out if the Firewire bridge needs a firmware update. I'd also try changing Firewire cables. See this FAQ:
