Lacie mini HD and Hub with Airport Disk

Has anyone tried a Lacie mini HD and Hub with the Airport Disk and can you confirm whether the full features of the disk are available - i.e. the hub?

I have a Lacie 250 drive/mini hub connected to airport. I also have a printer connected to the USB hub on the Lacie.
I have had no problem with the drive or the printer being recognized by the AEBS. I have also had no problem with networked mac computers recognizing or accessing either the drive or the printer.
I have NOT been able to get my one windows computer to connect to the drive. Also, the drive drops out inexplicably a lot of data is transferred, and it requires a restart of the AEBS to reconnect. On restart the macs have no problem seeing it again.
I am trying to use it as a backup drive for a couple of computers. It is OK as long as the backups are incremental (after doing a full backup with the drive connected to the computer). If the backup is large, it won't work (today it crashed at 8 Gigs. Based on threads I have read, others are having this problem.

  • Time Machine will NOT work with Airport Disks!

It looks like Time Machine will not work with Airport Disks after all. All references to Airport have been removed from the Time Machine page:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/timemachine.html
It also specifically says: "You can designate just about any HFS+ formatted FireWire or USB drive connected to a Mac as a Time Machine backup drive. Time Machine can also back up to another Mac running Leopard with Personal File Sharing, Leopard Server, or Xsan storage devices."
Surely, they would have included the Airport Extreme Base Station in this list if it was supported.
I really hope there will be another firmware update for the AEBS which will bring compatibility with Time Machine, because Time Machine was the only reason for me to buy an AEBS. (I only use it as a small backup server, I don't even have wireless networking enabled. There were other solutions, e.g. from Synology, which are faster and more reliable than AEBS disk sharing, but Synology stated their network drives would not be compatible with Time Machine.)

Here's how you can potentially use your AirDisk with TimeMachine (beware that YMMV), but it should work as it works with every other "unsupported" device.
    1) Mount your AirDisk so it appears on your Mac
    2) Open Terminal.app
    3) change directories to the AirDisk's root folder located in "/Volumes"
    ie: cd "/Volumes/AirDisk Name"
    4) execute this command to "bless" the drive to be used with time machine:
    touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported
    5) Start TimeMachine and if all went well, it should recognize your AirDisk drive and use it for TM.
This should also work on NFS shares, SMB shares, AFP shares, basically anything. It has worked up until the last developer seed, so unless they yanked this at the last minute, it should still work.
Now, the reason why Apple removed this feature may be due to the unreliability of the AirDisk, so be cautious.

  • LaCie 6TB drive ejects when Air sleeps: I use two 6TB LaCie drives - home and office with my Air, which travels with me. Only have a problem with one. Is there a fix?

LaCie 6TB drive ejects when Air sleeps: I use two 6TB LaCie drives - home and office with my Air, which travels with me between the locations. Only have a problem with one that inappropriately ejects when the Air sleeps (and only sometimes). Is there a fix? I've read others who believe that the problem is with the operating system (I'm using 10.9.2). But my problem suggests that it's with one of the LaCie's. Any suggestions about how to fix?

Lacie doesnt make HD, thats a Seagate inside the box.
    Is there a fix?
Yes, get a 4TB max HD,    6TB drives are both new and have known issues,  ...in fact so do most all 4TB drives.
my problem suggests that it's with one of the LaCie's
    You mean Seagate
Large external hard drives are great! Large external hard drives are horrible
It is a common premise that people are overjoyed at the dropping prices per terabyte on external hard drives, and the first thing that enters most peoples minds is "great, I can put all my stuff on one drive,... all of it!" However considerations need to be made in creating a giant single choke point for not mere data loss, but seriously large data loss. If there is at the very least yet another redundant copy, this is fine, otherwise do not consider it whatsoever. Some 3TB and 4TB drives of all mfg. have, at the time of this writing, reliability concerns currently and best recommendation is staying at 2TB drives or less.
Advantages and disadvantages of larger 3TB and 4TB external drives must be weighed

  • Problem with Airport Disk and Leopard

I connected an external drive (1tb MyBook) to my Airport Extreme base station. The transfer rate was a bit slow but otherwise the disk was working fine, shared between a MacBook Pro and a PC. Then I updated my system from 10.5.0 to 10.5.3 and haven't been able to access the disk since. The drive shows up in the left pane of the finder window but when I try to access it the wireless network goes down. I've restarted both the disk and the base station, checked for software updates, gone through the settings on the Airport Utility, all to no avail. Can't access the disk from the PC any more either.
In the previous system there was an Airport Disk utility (it had a little icon on the finder menu bar), but I can't find this in the new system version. Help!??

Since you are able to get it to run without an airport card, I would backup your data and erase and install. If after an erase and install without adding back any peripherals, airport doesn't work as expected, and you apply all the airport software updates, then I'd say the airport card is faulty. See my backup FAQ*:

See this page for airport software updates:

  • Hard drive and hub with Time Capsule

I want to add a hard drive to my Time Capsule 2TB. I've read the other posts here, but am still feeling uncertain about how to be successful. I have a printer connected, and want to keep it connected, so I know I need a hub. I have a USB-powered hard drive that I'd like to use, and I have a USB-powered hub that I could use.
    I think I understand:
    1. I cannot use a USB-powered hub with a USB-powered hard drive.
    2. I can use a USB-powered hub with an externally powered (desktop) hard drive.
    3. I can use an externally powered USB hub with a USB-powered hard drive, however, not all hubs will work in this configuration.
    Do I have this right?
And the next question, is anyone using an externally powered USB hub that they know works with the Time Capsule?

    Do I have this right?
    Yes.
And the next question, is anyone using an externally powered USB hub that they know works with the Time Capsule?
It is harder than you think to say.. brand x or brand y works.. because the companies that sell them buy from several sources and make the factories in China bid for their work.. one year they use this chip and the next year a different factory and a different chip.. but USB hubs are too cheap to get proper revisions.
So I read a belkin xyz works fine from one poster and another say that bought the same one and it failed.. both are right.. welcome to the bottom end of the market.
Buy the cheapest hub you can from whoever is nearest to you.. and check if they will swap if it does not work. The cheap generics often work fine.
I have been trying to help get a database of what is compatible.
USB drive compatibility with Airport Routers. Help make database.
This is looking particularly at USB disks. powered hubs are just too numerous.
If you want a good place to buy that is likely to stock stuff that works ring OWC (if you live in the US) for their recommended ones.. it will likely be a few dollars more but they would quickly find what is working in the stock and what doesn't.

  • LaCie Mini HD and Base Station

Is it possible to use the extra usb and firewire connections wirelessly? i have my Lacie hard drive set up with my base station and it works fine but if i plug a usb peripheral into the hard drive nothign happens. Does it have to be hard wires to work? Because on the Base Station description it says you can get a usb hub for it to allow more connections (airport itself) surely plugging the hard drive into the airport this should be the same thing?

Presumably, if I had a LaCie HD and Hub and an AirPort Extreme, I could connect the USB hub of the LaCie to the AirPort and then connect a USB printer and the HD on the LaCie to the USB hub to share both the HD and my printer wirelessly? It just couldn't support other USB devices wirelessly?
    Thanks in advance...

  • Setup wireless network for mac and pc with Airport Express?

    Mac Mini/OSX/10.8.2/Airport Express
    Question,
I have my AIrPort Express setup for my Mac Mini and I have dell computer that I want to share the wireless network. Is it possible to setup a wireless network with my mini and the pc using only the AirPort Express? Is the Airport Express a wireless router?
    Thanks,

If your Mac Mini is connecting to the Express using wireless, then this confirms that the device is working correctly.
The Express is a wireless router that can support up to 10 wireless connections, so your Dell computer should be able to connect assuming that its wireless card is working correctly, and the Dell indentifies the network and enters the correct wireless network password.
If you are having difficulty with the Dell PC connecting, this Windows troubleshooting document might help:

  • Mac Mini won't boot with install disk

tried booting with install disc in and pushing "c" on keyboard and doesn't work. Using a apple wireless keyboard. Also used the keyboard that came with Mac Pro but didn't work nor did a wired logitech.
    any ideas?
    Thanks!

+What is the source of the idea that the mac aluminum keyboard won't work with the mini?+
Dozens of reports in this forum over the past year.
Keep in mind that by "not working" what was meant was that the startup keys wouldn't work. The Alu keyboard otherwise works fine with the Mini.
It has also been reported that the Alu Keyboard does work for startup keys if it is plugged into a hub with an external power supply.

  • Data corruption with Airport Disk file sharing

There is another long thread on the Airport Disk, and I am not sure if this is the same problem. My situation is that my file server died recently, and I am looking for its replacement. Airport Disk with my new base station appears ideal because I have a 300GB disk from my dead file server and a USB disk enclosure. I connected the disk to my iMac and formatted it to HFS. While still connected to my iMac, I copied over my iTunes library. This was the second time trying out the airport disk, so I created /Shared and /Users/username to work with file sharing with accounts. I then ejected the disk and connected to my airport base station (gigE, 7.2.1 firmware). My first test was to run a recursive diff between the two iTunes libraries. There were some files that differed, so I ran the diff again and a different set of files were identified as differing! I disconnected all users and moved the disk back to my iMac. I ran the diff again, and there were no differing files!
I haven't yet had time to investigate more, and I am wondering if others have seen similar symptoms.
    Dan

    I have the same issue.
Plus, in my case, two disks appear on my desktop, even though I have no partition. One is named the same as my disk, the other is named the same as the user account for the disk on the Airport Extreme.

  • Files/folders not showing up with Airport Disk but are there?

I've recently bought the Airport Extreme, I was all excited about Airport Disk but there is a weird, extremly annoying bug.
On my USB hard drive connected using Airport Disk, I have a folder called music. When I open this folder, OS X starts reading the directory and files/folders show up one by one, but then it just all disappears - and the folder shows nothing. In Windows, it shows nothing at all in the folder. However, when I reconnect the drive using USB to my MacBook Pro, all my music is there and I can see all the files.
I have a feeling this is something to do with this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305040
as I have German and Japanese music files imported by iTunes which are not named in English (ie the filenames are encoded in Japanese etc etc)
Another strange thing is, in Windows, if I type the direct path to a folder (which is inside the supposed empty folder) I will be able to access it.
    What's going on Apple?...
    Anyone else got this issue?...
    Thanks
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Everyone,
I was experiencing the same. on the XP box it just wouldnt show anything period and on the Mac, the finder would briefly display the contents of the drive before disappearing. Spoke to Tier 2 and they thought I should reformat the drive, since he thought it likely that due to severing the drives connection that the format was corrupt...
I did manage to fix it myself and I'll tell you how. First I hardwired the drive via USB to the Mac. noticed an item called FROM which had no size, no date modified and type was --. I deleted the RECYCLED folder (which results when you delete something from the drive thru XP)
then i hardwired it to the PC. deleted the "FROM" folder which in this case was a file folder, and 237MB approx in size. I also deleted the ".DSStore" and ".Trashes" files. .DSStore is basically the icon cache and .Trashes is when you delete something on the airdisk from the Mac. reconnected the drive and POOF! it worked Problem is now solved.
So to summate, i think in my case it was more the discrepancy between the FROM not showing up as anything on the Mac, versus it being a full fledged folder to windows xp. i just thought i would pass this along...

  • Fax and Scan with Airport Express

I have an Airport Express with my Mac and a Windows Vista PC running on my wireless network. I have a HP PSC printer, but I am unable to scan or fax from either computer. Any ideas if this is possible, and if so, how?

I have a HP PSC printer, but I am unable to scan or fax from either computer.
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
Any ideas if this is possible, and if so, how?
Yes, two that come to mind are:
o Connect the printer directly to the USB port on your Mac, or
o If the printer is Ethernet-enabled, you could connect it to the Ethernet port of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) if the AX is reconfigured to be a remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • Setting up bt home hub with airport extreme and timecapsule

Hi I am running BT Broadband direct into a BT Home Hub (Black version) then ethernet into an airport extreme.
Timecapsule then extending the apple network and an iMac ethernet into the timecapsule
Various other macbooks, iPhones,iPads, iPods and apple tv wirelessly linked in. (and an hp multifunction printer)
The network seems very slow and unstable - any suggestions on how to tune it?
    Thanks
    Nigel

Introducing wireless repeater or bridge causes double hopping wireless. It greatly reduces speed and efficiency of wireless. I am not 100% sure I understand your arrangement. But there are limited wireless channels and the result of many wireless devices fighting each other is bad.
    1. Do you have wireless turned off in the Home Hub? Please do unless it is providing important connections.
    2. What mode is the AEBS running in? Because with BT you must use the home hub as a router, you should have the AEBS bridged. Is that the case?
    3. Wireless extending networking adds issues as stated. Get rid of this. The best method is to link the TC and AEBS by alternative.. ie ethernet is the best by huge margin. If you cannot do this in your house then use EOP adapters. They are not foolproof but if they work, they keep working with reliability and stabilty and speed that wireless cannot match. You can then run the AEBS and TC as roaming WAP, by using different channels but same SSID (wireless name), and security settings and passwords.

  • Multiple Printers on USB Hub with Airport Express

I have been testing all day and I think my question is already answered. However, I would like to confirm with the gurus in here: Can AE be hooked up to a powered 4 port USB hub to which three printers are connected?
In the hardwired situation, there seems to be no problem. All three individual printers are recognized by Printer Setup Utility on the computer to which the USB hub is attached. When I attach the USB hub to the AE and restart the hub, only the first (closest to the USB out cable) is recognized, no matter which one I place in that first socket. And only that first one is seen over the wireless network.
I was looking for a way to allow other computers in the house to be able to utilize these three different speciality printers (labelmaker, DVD printer and LaserWriter), without having to have the connected computer always on as host.
Any suggestions would be appreciated-short of buying two more Airport Express units.

Can AE be hooked up to a powered 4 port USB hub to which three printers are connected?
Sorry, but no. The USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can only accept a single USB printer. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107857)

  • How do I network and connect with AirPort?

OK here is what is happening
through a Wired connection to my router i get to the internet fine
on ALL 5 of my computers

either the Linux Laptop or the Mac Mini or Both
I come to this forum to ask how to configure the MAC Mini
I tried turning AirPort on but the MAC only sees the internet when i conect the Cat 5 cable to the 10/100 Ethernet slot
I also want to SHARE the connection with other PCS
here is my list of PCS
    PC1--Mac Mini
    PC2--Fedora Core 5 Linux Laptop
    PC3--Fedora Core 5 Linux Desktop
    PC4--Madriva 2006 Linux Desktop
    PC 5--Windows ME Desktop
only PC 1 and PC 2 are capable of wireless
the Router is also wireless with 4 wired ports

i am on Verizon Fios @ 15g so there is no modem nec.

I tried turning AirPort on but the MAC only sees the internet when i conect the Cat 5 cable to the 10/100 Ethernet slot
Verify that AirPort is at the top of the connection list.
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
I also want to SHARE the connection with other PCS
here is my list of PCS
For the devices that don't have wireless capability, just plug them into the router's available LAN ports. Those with can all share the router's wireless feature.

  • Can't connect to router and network with Airport on G4

Just upgraded from a Belkin Wireless G router (c. 2004) to a Belkin Wireless N. Problem is that one of my old G4's can't get on. The security with the old router was WPA, and it worked. But the new router is WPA/WPA2-PSK, and the G4 with the Airport card running OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) only asks for WEP. How do I get on?

    Hi Odell,
Some old G4 Airport cards cannot do WPA2, but to see what choices you have...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed. See Security choices there.
