Lacie mini HUB HD surge protector!??????

Hello,
I have a LaCie mini HUB external hard drive and it comes with it's own power supply but I was wondering if that serves as a protector from power surges. For instance if there was a power surge that blew out the power supply, would that also travel into the hard drive and destroy it?

Probably my ignorance rather than yours in that I might not have correctly described it!
A UPS is an 'Uninterruptible Power Supply' - it is like a power strip but with a battery inside, so when you plug devices into it, it can continue to power them for a few minutes even when the mains power is cut. That allows you to elegantly and safely power systems down rather than have sudden system failures which can cause serious problems to hardware - not least hard drives. The battery also allows for continued safe operation during brownouts where voltages can drop low enough to otherwise cause failures.
Some UPS devices (though not all) also contain surge protection, by which some or all of the power outlets on it are 'smoothed' removing voltage spikes from the supply.
Most users tend to buy surge protectors only, when in fact a UPS/surge protector combined is really a far better (safer) bet. APC (http://www.apc.com/) are one of the better and more common suppliers.

  • AirPort Disk doesn't work with LaCie Mini Hub & Hard Drive

I got my new La Cie Mini Hub and Hard Drive yesterday, backed up the PB and did a reinstall...no problems.
This morning, I hooked my LC into my AEBS went through the setup in AP Utility which saw the drive with no problems. But the AP Drive Utility doesn't see the drive. My AP firmware has been updated, and the software too. I even went through the setup in this posting:

Any ideas that I may have missed?

I am dealing with the same issue, jeppeo. I have a 320 GB Seagate external HD (with both USB and Firewire). The Airport Disk Utility does not recognize the drive. It does, however, recognize my Kingston 1GB USB stick. Thus, I know the system works, it just doesn't seem to be working with the Seagate. It may be that the Seagate, and the LaCie you are using, are simply incompatible with the AEBSN. If that is the case, the only option might be to purchase a drive that is known to be compatible with the AEBSN, or any other drive and simply try plugging it in. I am considering buying a Western Digital drive (as many of their models seem to be compatible) and then testing it out. If it doesn't work, I will return it.

  • My LaCie mini Hub External won't mount on my iMAC.

It has mounted many times just fine in the past until now. How do I force it to mount? I don't see it in the disk utility at all and the power light is showing on the LaCie. Do you have any idea why this is happening? Please help!

    Hi
If the drive is powering on, then it is most likely not an issue with the USB port etc.
You may want to check in System Profiler under USB to see if the drive is there (Apple -> About this Mac -> More Info -> USB)
Also, try resetting the SMC & PRAM as that could help

  • Lacie mini HD and Hub with Airport Disk

Has anyone tried a Lacie mini HD and Hub with the Airport Disk and can you confirm whether the full features of the disk are available - i.e. the hub?

I have a Lacie 250 drive/mini hub connected to airport. I also have a printer connected to the USB hub on the Lacie.
I have had no problem with the drive or the printer being recognized by the AEBS. I have also had no problem with networked mac computers recognizing or accessing either the drive or the printer.
I have NOT been able to get my one windows computer to connect to the drive. Also, the drive drops out inexplicably a lot of data is transferred, and it requires a restart of the AEBS to reconnect. On restart the macs have no problem seeing it again.
I am trying to use it as a backup drive for a couple of computers. It is OK as long as the backups are incremental (after doing a full backup with the drive connected to the computer). If the backup is large, it won't work (today it crashed at 8 Gigs. Based on threads I have read, others are having this problem.

  • Is necessary to connect the Mac Mini to a  Surge Supressor?

I have a brand new Mac Mini i5, and my question is: if I need to protect my mac connected to a Surge Supressor for protection??

EDIT: Multiple answers came in while I was typing. My recommendation was the same as them -- a UPS would be better.
A surge protector will protect against surges but not against power interruptions. A momentary power interruption might cause your Mac to shut down or lock up or might mess up a file operation or corrupt memory. A UPS takes over immediately when the house power shuts off and can power your Mac for a few minutes or longer (depending on the size of the UPS). For momentary interruptions it saves you from losing work. For longer interruptions it gives you time to shut everything down properly.

  • Do you know of a place in Delhi, India that sells adapter / surge protector

Last night in the hotel, first night in delhi and BOOM! All lights went out, surge protector smoked. Does anyone know what travel adapter and converter and surge procoter is needed and where in Delhi it would be available, a reliable source, brand new macbook and no power. please help lost in india.

Hey LostNindia and welcome to the discussions!
I was just traveling in Delhi and several other parts of India with my MacBook. I'm no expert in this area, but I'll let you know what I had that worked. I took with me a power converter and a two prong and three prong adaptor. I ended up never using the power converter, because the MacBook's power brick can handle up to 240 volts, which is the voltage in India. So, I don't believe you need a power convertor as I had no trouble with my American MacBook. I didn't bring a surge protector, and that may or may not have been wise. We had one power outage, but the MacBook was not plugged in at the time. So, I am unfortunately little help as to a suggestion for that, but I managed to make it without one. If you are looking for an adaptor, I'd suggest a three-prong adaptor. Two prong (the same as the UK) works, but not in all outlets. The prong outlets appeared to be located everywhere.
As for a place to purchase these items- I noticed adaptors in the airport, but that probably is not accessible to you. I saw numerous electronics boutiques throughout India, and bought a firewire cable in one location- little shops like these probably have adaptors (and for cheap, too). I don't know where you are staying, but your hotel desk can probably recommend a place for the adaptors. The surge protector may be harder to find, but was also something I did not use.
As a completely unrelated suggestion, I'd suggest turning off your wireless capabilities as there are few networks to access, and it nearly halves your battery life. I turned off mine and got over 5 hours of battery life while I was traveling the country.
Hope this helps (and thanks to Niel for showing me this topic),

  • Lacie mini HD's

Do the Lacie Mini HD's built to stack with the mac mini's fit the AEBS in a nice firm way? Do they stack well?
    thanks,
    Sean

    Or these ministacks:

Looking to know if they stack well with the AEBS and if the USB hub of the drive works so you can attach printers and more drives to the ministack/lacie.

  • Power requirements for surge protector?

I want to get a surge protector that will support the power requirements of a Macpro and a 30-inch cinema display. I would also like it for an Airport Extreme and an external FW drive, though those are not as important for being on the same outlet, they can be on a different one if necessary. What should I look for in terms of power ratings, etc.
    Thanks!

    Stanwelks,
I sit near a forest of cables and had that problem. The instruction books on the Display and the Macpro have information enabling you to work out the Amperage they use. One can derive amperage from a stated wattage knowing your voltage. I know mine I don't know yours. Here in UK most residential wall sockets take up to 13 Amps. Most plug blocks say they are good for 13 Amps. So in the train it is the smallest capacity of link, socket or plug block , that matters.
I had to put some devices (the display and MacPro were the worst 'offenders', on a separate wall socket linked to my 'lair' by a long cable. There was slight leeway to the 13Amps so a printer (seemingly of low amperage) is added.
The other things you mention are small amperage but check. It is a good idea to work out the amperage of each device you have if you can.

  • Does the power cord have a surge protector built in?

Does the "brick" at the end of the power cord have a surge protector built in? I'm wondering whether it's ok to keep my Macbook plugged in and charging during a thunderstorm or not.

    markrox7 wrote:
So I shouldn't leave my Macbook to charge during a thunderstorm if I don't have a surge strip/adapter?
    That is correct.
Get a surge protector for everyday use.
Unplug the charger during thunderstorms.  Surge protectors do not protect against the damage that a lightning strike causes - they just protect against electrical surges.

  • Brown out & power surge protector question

Hey everyone, I'm using a Mac Pro and was wondering an affordable brown out & surge protector that will protect my computer well without breaking the wallet. I'm not worried about the bells and whistles I just need something that will keep my computer safe from electrical issues. Thanks.

That price range will buy you an outlet strip with MOV surge protection, which is very minimal. It will filter spikes of a certain amplitude and duration, and nothing more. A Tripp Lite Isobar Ultra 8 will give you far better protection and noise isolation. It has both high and low frequency filtering as well as excellent spike suppression, and isolates the devices from each other. It's a great addition to a UPS, which will add brownout protection.
Even at $ 250 total it's well worth it to protect your Mac Pro investment.

  • Upgrade LaCie Mini Firewire drive...

I currently have a 160 GB LaCie mini firewire drive for my Mac Mini Core Duo. I recently saw an ad at a local Fry's that is selling Maxtor 500GB retail box had drive for $99 in either SATA or Ultra ATA versions. I would like to replace the 160GB drive in my LaCie with the 500GB drive but do not know which version to buy, SATA or Ultra ATA. Does anyone know which version is in the LaCie mini firewire drive? I looked at LaCie's support page but they do not show what type of drive is in the LaCie mini firewire. It shows 7,200 RPM, 8MB Cache, and 40MB/s transfer rate.
Has anyone taken a LaCie mini firewire drive apart? Any hints will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tony.

    Hi,
That is exactly what I did with my LaCie Mac Mini companion drive. Disk Utility will give you the information you need. For instance, select your Mini Drive and go to Info to find out the Media name which is the Media model number. In my case, a Seagate ST3160023A. This is a Ultra ATA 100 Hard Disk. The actual upgrade is very easy to perform. Remove the screws neatly hidden under the rubber pads of the drive. Open it up (be careful with the front LED assembly). Change the HD and re assemble. That is it! OSX will recognize the drive and ask whether it should be initialized. Answer yes and then go to disk utility to create a OSX partition. Done.

  • Wireless routers and surge protector with phone line ports

I cannot connect to the internet when I use my surge protector phone line ports.  I have the line from the wall in the in port and the other one in the out port but status light on modem doesn't light up and no connection to internet.  Is it my surege protector?  Do I need to do something else?

I assume the system works fine if you bypass the surge protector.   I will also assume that you are not plugging in your DSL phone line on the "in port" and then plugging in an ethernet wire on the "out port" of the surge protector.  Your surge protector cannot convert a DSL phone line signal into an ethernet signal.  This is the job of the DSL modem.
Assuming you are going through the surge protector phone line to phone line, or ethernet wire to ethernet wire, then it means that either the surge protector is broken or you have a bad wire.  Try a different wire.  If that doesn't work, return the surge protector.

  • HT2173 I turned off my desktop to plug it into a surger protector and now I'm not sure how to turn it back on

I turned off my computer so I could plug it into a surge protector. Not sure how to turn computer back on.

Making sure the surge protector is turned on, plug in the computer and press the power button on the right rear of the machine.

  • Should i plug my hp touchsmart 300 straight in to wall outlet or into surge protector?

should i plug my hp touchsmart 300 straight in to wall outlet or into surge protector?

It will work either way. The downside of the wall outlet is that if there is a strong enough spike your electronics may be damaged. I have always used a UPS which will not only protect against surges but also will power your computer during a power failure.
It really comes down to how much risk you feel comfortable with.

  • LaCie Mini not showing up as available for TM

I have been using a LaCie Mini 500 gb drive as my time machine drive for a 6 months. Now it does not detect the drive properly when I plug it into my computer. It was recognizing it yesterday, but it would become available during the backup. Today it is not recognizing it at all, meaning it does not show up in finder.
    Please help.

See if you can repair it, via #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If it doesn't appear in Disk Utility's sidebar, be sure all connections are tight and secure; try other ports and cables.
If it has it's own power supply, be sure it's plugged in to a known good outlet. While it's plugged-in, hold it to your ear. They've had a "run" of bad power supplies, and apparently the bad ones make some noise. One poster described it as a "squishing" noise, whatever that is. If so, contact LaCie.
If all else fails, the drive has probably failed but at 6 months old, it should be covered by warranty . Contact your retailer or LaCie.
