Lacie Mobile harddrive won't mount on my powerbook with usb 2

Hi, I bought a Lacie 80 GB mobile hardrive with usb 2 and for some reason it will only mount on one of the usb ports and only when I restart. Can anyone give any advice? Should I just take it back and get a firewire version?

Take it back and get the Firewire version.
The USB ports on the PowerBook are underpowered and as a result have difficulty powering USB hard drives.
The solution is either get a externally powered drive or get a Firewire drive.

My two Lacie hard drives won't mount on my G5 running Tiger. They were fine on my G4 iMac running Panther. I've tried using the Lacie Update Tool but the drives aren't recognised. I've tested the firewire cables on another drive that works and they're fine, so it's not cables.
Both drives power up okay and whir into action, but just aren't talking to the G5.

This happened to me with a LaCie external drive as well.
The problem is that LaCie formats the drives as PC-based
and not Mac Extended, so unless you reformatted the
drives to Mac when you started using them, your access
to them on any Mac may result in a failure to mount.
Once that happens retrieval of data is made more difficult
    because of this formatting incongruity.
There is no way you can get the data once your G4 quits
mounting them. If you can get the data off of the drives,
back it up and then reformat the drives using Mac's Disc
Utility. Then you can reload the data and I suspect all of
your Macs will then mount the drives via Firewire.
    Good Luck!

  • LaCie external drive won't mount on iMAC

    Hi,
My external LaCie external drive won't mount on my iMAC running 10.6.8 but will mount and show up on my PC as working fine, however I am not able to read the information on it as it was formatted for my iMAC. Therefore it leads me to believe this is a software issue.
I have reason to believe someone had changed the permissions and prevented the mounting of this external drive (which belongs to me)  so that the contents won't be found on my iMAC.
    How to resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cait

    Cait,
Please try a SMC reset, it may take 2-3 attempts for it to work. Look over the instructions below carefully.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Harddrive won't mount anymore

    Hello all,
One of my internal hard disks (Seagate Baracude 7200.11, 1 TB) of my Mac Pro won't mount anymore. The disk is spinning as normal, I don't hear a weird sound or anything. It just won't mount. Not in Finder, not in Disk Utility and not in Systemprofile.
I did try diskwarrior and some other utility apps, but nothing seems to work.
Is the disk just 'dead'? Or is there something wrong with the SATA connection?
    Thanks for helping me!
    Greetz,
    Maarten

Thank you for the answers. I went to the Seagate website and did a firmware upgrade for the same hard drive that is (still) working...
The other one is 'dead' but, according to Seagate, the files are still on the disk. I contacted them to help me out. There are people that claim that Seagate will recover for free because it's a firmware problem.
    Thankx!

  • ExFAT formated harddrive won't mount on Macbook Pro

My job recently gave me a 4tb G-Tech G-Drive to access video and audio files to edit. The drive works fines on my bosses Windows computer and the drive is formatted for exFAT but it won't mount on my Macbook Pro. My OSX is 10.8.4 and the drive appears in the disk ulities and when I try to repair, it says this:
    Verify and Repair volume “disk2s1”
    Checking file systemChecking volume.
    Checking main boot region.
Main boot region is invalid.  Trying alternate boot region.
    Checking alternate boot region.
    Alternate boot region is invalid.
The volume  could not be verified completely.
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
I don't have the option to reformat as this is a work external and I don't want to do anything that will erase the files and I also don't have access to the windows computer. Is there a way to access the files or fix this or will I have to go through the long process of giving the hard drive back to my boss and waiting for him to reformat the drive and giving it back? And if he does give it back and the same problem happens, how can I fix this? I read about cluster sizes above 1024 Mac OSX doesn't read it, is this true ? I really need to fix this.

Okay to get to the point plain and simple, Macs cannot read ex-fat or NTFS drives, they have to be fat32 to be compatiable, unfortunately the only solution is to get a pc and then re-format the drive as fat32 or deafult and do quick format. then and only then can you do cross-platform. hope it helps.
P.S. You could drag the files onto a PC and then reformat it and drag the files back. of course they would have to be under 4Gb

  • External Harddrive won't mount anymore

    Hi Guys,
I recently copied over a load of stuff from my harddrive to my iMac but today it seems not to be playing ball. I've looked up the drive on Drive Utility and it is recognised there except i can't repair, mount or verify the drive.
Has anybody experienced this before and if so do you know what i have to do to fix?
    Cheers
    Jim

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC and try Disk Utility again. If still no joy, try something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools.

I have been reading these forums for several days and trying everywhich way to mount my harddrive. I am using the airport extreme base station and I have usb connected with a Wd My Book hard drive and a hp printer connected to the hub. th printer works great. the drive is the problem
The drive is recognized in the airport utilty, but is not recognized in the finder or the airdisk utilty. I have tried the afp://ipaddress/name of drive and i am propmted with my password but the drive fails to mount.
i have tried several of the suggestions to no avail. is there word of a fix or does anyone have anyother recomendations?

    it's connected to my g5...
    That's what I thought.
You have posted in the wrong discussion area. This area is for discussing the 802.11b/g/n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and wireless networking.
This thread is discussing using a USB hard drive connected to the AEBS.
You should post your question in the G5 discussion area or the Mac OS X discussion area.

  • Lacie disk mini won't mount

I just bought a intel core duo iMac and hooked up my lacie disk mini via USB to access my itunes library and other files only to get a message saying that no disk mini was found. Both Disk Utility and Norton see the external hard drive and scan it with positive results. I even connected the disk mini to my freinds PC and I could access the files just fine. Any ideas anybody?

    Welcome to the discussions, Tommy!
According to LaCie's FAQs on this subject, they ask users to try -
    - A different cable
    - Repair permissions
    - Shut down and unplug your Mac for 15 minutes to reset the FW/USB bus
I am not sure if this is an issue related to your iMac being a Core Duo model, but this is the forum for the G5 iMacs. You might want to post this question in the iMac (Early 2006) forums for your model. If it is specific to the Core Duos, the users there might have experienced the same problem and have a solution.

  • After installing Leopard External Harddrives won't mount.

I have 5 EHD connected to my iMac. After I installed Leopard, none of the drive show up on the finder nor in Disk Utility. I tried resetting the PRAM but no go. I checked then drives on my iBook and they mount. I did disk repair but it said no repairs were necessary.
I check system profiler and it can't find anything in the Firewire ports. I have a firewire connected printer that is also not showing.

I can get the HDs to show up if I don't use the hub.

  • Kindle Fire won't mount on iMac 27"  with Mountain Lion

I purchased a kindle fire and I am trying to connect the Kindle Fire to iMac using the USB port.  I connect to the USB.  I have tried having the kindle fire powered down and then plug the unit to the USB.  The Kindle Fire automatically opens up and I unlock the Kindle Fire but does not Mount.  I have tried Restarting my iMac while the Kindle Fire is plugged in and does not work.  I have tried powering down the Kindle Fire while connected and then power back on and this still does not show up on my desktop.
Any ideas on how to get the drive to show up on my desktop?

I have the same problem mounting my new Kindle Paperwhite on a MacBookPro running 10.8 Mountain Lion.  The same symptoms as above.  However, there is an added wrinkle; yesterday when the only book on the Kindle was the Kindle Paperwhite Users Manual, it mounted fine and I was able successfully to transfer a book that had been previously been downloaded to my Mac.  So I thought that because that book was not obtained from Amazon, but was able to be loaded on our Kindle 2, maybe the ability to mount was that the Kindle Paperwhite was rebelling in some way.
But that thought was demolished when I connected the Kindle Paperwhite to my Mac Mini running MacOS 10.6 Snow Leopard.  It mounted fine and I was able to transfer several other books to it.
So it now seems that it is only Mac users whose Macs are running Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks who are reporing this problem, and the problem only happens with Kindle Paperwhites and newer.
To my debugger mind I would say that says something happened at the transition from MacOS Snow Leopard to MacOS Lion.  But I don't expect Apple to respond to this, since my experience is that when a bug is installed in MacOS X and isn't discovered immediately, the probability of it ever being fixed drops precipitously.
APPLE - THAT IS A CHALLENGE.

  • Filesystem from sdcard won't mount via fstab, will with rc.local

Since receiving my laptop back from RMA, I've installed my SSD and set up Arch.  I wanted to put /var on a separate reiserfs partition on my 8GB sdcard to prevent extra write activity from logs and pacman, however it wouldn't mount.  I tried using both label and dev (haven't tried uuid yet) and it always failed, causing me to enter admin mode.
I then set up a 1.5GB partition with reiserfs on the SSD for the time being, changing the pacman cache option to a directory on the sdcard in /media.  I set the command to mount in rc.local and it mounts fine there.  I can't get the other media partition to mount via fstab either.
Is there another hook I need to add to mkinitcpio.conf and rebuild the init ram image in order for this to work?  Any ideas?  I'm going to try adding usb to the hooks and rebuilding for now.
    Here is my setup:
    fstab:
    devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    LABEL=boot /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
    LABEL=home /home ext4 defaults,noatime,discard 0 1
    LABEL=root / ext4 defaults,noatime,discard 0 1
    LABEL=var /var reiserfs defaults,noatime 0 1
    #LABEL=sdcard /media/sdcard ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2
    none /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noatime,size=1000M,mode=1777 0 0
    rc.local
    mount /dev/disk/by-label/sdcard /media/sdcard
    mkinitcpio.conf hooks line:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
    EDIT:
I tried adding usb to the HOOKS array between sata and filesystem, rebuilt the image, uncommented my sdcard entry in fstab, and rebooted.  It didn't fix it.
I see someone made a hook in the AUR:

I'm a little confused, so maybe I'll learn something here.  It is my impression that /var is not, and need not be mounted while in using the initrd.  It will be mounted in init after the kernel has been loaded, / has been mounted/ and init started.  rc.local definitely is not executed until long after the initrd has been cast aside.
    Things to look at:
Does the mount point /media/sdcard exist at the time rc.local runs?  I'd wager not.
Look at the output of ls -l /dev/disk/by-label and recheck the disk labels.

  • Blank DVD-R's won't mount even though compatible with system

Trying to copy just a couple  photos onto disc for a resume. Blank DVD-R will not mount on screen. They are accepted then rejected. Old DVD-R with information WILL mount, as well as CD-R's (audio). Using a fairly new MacBook Pro. Have checked HELP sections and computer system is compatible w/ DVD-R. So the disc drive(?) works but something that has always been very simple to do is not working. Am I using the wrong DVD? Have used this in the past so I'm confused. Any suggestions much appreciated since I need to get this done & mailed off ASAP. Thank you!

Once in a while few blank dvds may go bad.
Try to clean them or try a different batch.

  • 10.4.9 and now USB Hard Drive(s) Won't Mount

After running the combo updater on my Intel Core Duo iMac 17" my LaCie BigDisk won't mount nor will my 60GB USB hard drive that I use to backup my MacBook (though this drive DOES mount on the MacBook without any problems). All other USB devices (and my 160GB Western Digital USB Hard Drive and 300GB Seagate FireWire hard drive mount and work fine on the iMac). My LaCie BigDisk wouldn't mount on my MacBook at first, but eventually mounted ONCE on the MacBook. I have tried repairing permissions, rebooting, using an older IOUSBFamily.kext (that was a nightmare and required some CLI experience to undo without having to find a firewire cable that long enough to reach around my desk to use the iMac via Target Mode on the MacBook good thing I saved the original).
At any rate here is the error output in Console.app:

  • USB 2 external hard drive won't mount on my G4 dual 450

I had a problem with my Intel iMac and had to take it for service. I tried to hook up the lacie usb 2 external drive that was my backup for the imac to my G4 but it won't mount (using the built in usb 1.1). I also have a usb 2 and firewire card in this machine and that won't work either.
It will mount on my G4 powerbook though, at usb1.1.
I don't see why the older G4 wount mount it too. Any ideas?

    Pat,
When connected, does it show up in Disk Utility? If so, it's failure to mount is probably due to restrictive permissions and differing ownership. In other words, you probably have permissions for the volume set such that only the "owner" can access it, and said ownership differs on your G4 tower.
In fact, the drive is probably mounting, but the mounted volume is inaccessible to you (on the tower).
If you find that the drive is, in fact, showing up in Disk Utility, and you wish to access it from the tower, let us know. There are steps you can take to correct the problem.
