Lacie Speakers and Mac Pro Firewire problem waking from sleep and loud feedback. I had a powermac before this with the speakers and it worked fine. But the mac pro is having these issues. Is it the firewire port or the speakers or (and most likely) just a firmware glitch with mac pro? Anyone else see these issues?

Here is my audio settings. For some reason I wish I could remember what I did. It was actually the Apple Store tech in the Unversity Village in Seattle that gave me the idea and I swear I had to change the settings in MIDI setup. Now that Leopard is out it seems the MIDI stuff has been redone. I included screenshots of my MIDI setup as it is currently to see if you see something different on your computers. Let me know!

My mac pro restarts when waking from sleep

Hello everyone pls help me.
I have a annoying problem and that is that my Mac Pro restarts after it has been to sleep.
Last week I updated the system with an update from Apple, safteyupdate 2013-003 version 1.0.
I have swedish OsX 10.6.8.
After this update my mac always restarts after waking from sleep.
So what may have gone wrong?
Pls help me in a simple way, and pls describe in easy steps if I have to do something.

One suggestion is to always have cloned your system ahead of time, that means before making changes or updates, early on when it is fresh and working.
And don't just restart. Use Safe Mode at least, better yet use Recovery Mode if on Lion (which I do recommend) and have a small OS Emergency drive for any maintenance - along with a clone working copy of your system.
Don't just reinstall over your system. Do a fresh install on another drive. Image it and set that for maintenance, then clone that to be a new working base for your system.
Setup Assistant does an amazing job.
Forced restarts can corrupt the filesystem and directory as the changes in memory or cache are not written out and drives are not unmounted properly and will come to bite in the rear.

Mac Pro restarts when waking from sleep

Hi everyone.
I just got a brand new Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz), and had Apple upgrade the RAM to 2GB (4 x 512MB). My first problem is that the computer always restarts when waking from sleep, which is annoying! I have reset the SMC by unplugging the machine for a minite, but the problem persists. I have also tried sleeping the computer with nothing plugged in except the monitor and keyboard/mouse, but I get the same problem. All software/firmware is fully up to date.
I have also just noticed that the System Profiler states that there is only 1GB RAM in the computer, even though I am sure that it recognised 2GB when I got the machine a fortnight ago (I even have a screen shot of 'about this mac' to prove it!). Can anybody help, or do I need to phone Apple support?

I have a similar problem - hard restart when closing the lid to put it to sleep. It looks like there is a bluetooth issue(?), but I'm not sure what to do with it. We don't have any blue tooth devices in our house. From the console log:

HELP: Mac Pro restarts when waking from sleep

the problem just started a few days ago. i hadn't made any mods or installed any new software. all firmware is current.
i've reset the NVRAM and SMC with no results.
any suggestions?

Mac Pro Failed to wake from sleep

Hello All,
I've had my Mac Pro since Aug. 2007. Never had any problems of any kind until this morning.
To wake from sleep (as I always do): depressed arrow key (10:43 AM). There was a delay - then the spinning beach ball for about 2 min. I did a hard shutdown, waited a bit, then restarted at 10:52 AM. Boot up was (as always) quick.
I logged into my (usual) non-admin account and observed:
When all start up items were loaded: Finder windows appeared approximately as follows:
1. A window showing the (not sure of proper term) "internal folders" of main boot up volume.
2. A window showing the internal folders stored on my mirrored RAID back up disk(s)
3. A window showing the internal folders of my bootable back up.
4. A window showing all 3 disk icons[ Main boot, Bootable backup and the RAID].
I closed all of these windows. [Didn't think too much about it but it's not normal to have these widows appear] SO -

Then I logged out and logged into my admin account to check the system log with console.
It showed an event from last night which I could not interpret but it did not appear to reveal serious problems (something about not being able to make network connection).
But - the second item on the System Log showed the "wake from sleep" sequence (at 10:43 AM).
I'm going to post the entire wake from sleep log below but first I'll state what was obvious to me:
Startup of CPU #1, #2 and #3 appear first - there is NO #4 CPU!
The log for the manual startup at 10:52 showed some apparent problems as I note below.
Next: Once logged in as admin - I launched Activity Monitor just to assure myself that all four CPUs were at least registering - and they were / are.
Hoping someone here can more thoroughly analyze this log report and give me an idea of the cause of the failure to waken.
Naturally, I won't want to put the Mac Pro to sleep again until I'm sure this isn't a "permanent" problem requiring further action (including service, of course).
Also noticed a statement about some app not having correct permissions (apparently at the System level) and something about removing several orphaned files. There's a warning about CarbonCopyCloner scheduled tasks as well. But there my understanding ends.

First - thank you very much for taking time to offer thorough and informed advice.
However - as indicated in my last post, I have performed the first (and very basic) "test" - I checked to see if Xgrid was included in my network prefs and found that it was. I unchecked it because I don't have the setup to make use of processor resources on the other Mac I have in my home network. (And that other Mac is an old G4 eMac - not much help anyway!)
More specifically: it's apparent that I was using Xgrid "inappropriately" so I think the System Log really indicates that no connection can be found -because there isn't one!
I too still wonder about the "missing CPU 4" but, overall, I see no other indications that there's a problem. Activity Monitor shows all four CPU cores and they're all showing activity. I have not seen (or noticed) this in prior System Log reports so, if I see this again - I'll renew efforts to find it's significance and take appropriate action.
I then put my Mac Pro to sleep, waited a bit, then depressed an arrow key: the machine woke from sleep normally. This "solves" the immediate problem of abnormal wakening - at least I'm satisfied that it does and will continue monitoring for any similar "misbehaviors."
Power Management: I have purposely avoided doing anything with Power Management once I had it set to my liking. That is, I set the screen to sleep in 1 hour, I set the hard drive to "never" (sleep) and only use the Sleep menu command to put the Mac Pro to sleep. My dictum is to "not fix what isn't proved to be broken." Again - if I continue to have problems or new problems crop up, I will then go ahead and start making changes such as those you mention. (Like deleting com.apple.PowerManagemetn.plist)
Next: I did already run permissions repair and may do so again anytime I see problems which could be connected to permissions. Since I have "taken Xgrid" out of the picture, I don't think this particular permissions issue is going to be a problem under my current set up.
CarbonCopyCloner: Here we have a bit of a conundrum. I need! to keep CCC "available" to run scheduled back up tasks. I was given (a very expensive) 1TB wireless backup drive for Xmas and - through long trial and error - found that CCC is the most appropriate back up application for that drive.
For now: I consider that the problem is a bug in CCC and will contact Mr. Bombich about this.
Again: I do appreciate your pointing out this and the other things. You have helped me think through what could have been a very complex process in trouble shooting.
I think that my issue turned out to be simple: I may have accidentally touched the wrong key or key combination when I moved to wake the Mac Pro from sleep. I think that Xgrid was a problem but that now seems to be eliminated. The Mac Pro is now waking normally - which was my original objective.
Oh, and just to be clear: I forgot to mention above that I did re-examine the System Log and there are now no signs of the items in the log I posted originally here.

Problems Waking from Sleep

Symptoms: For the past 2-3 months I have been having difficulties waking my 13in MacBook Pro (purchased May 2010) from sleep. The problem came on slowly, but then started to get worse and worse until every time I open my computer lid I have to manually restart (hold down button in upper right corner of keyboard). When I open the laptop, the fan always starts going, but the screen remains black. Sometimes when I manually restart, I get the hazy screen with the progression of vertical bars across it and then within 1 minute, my computer restores itself to what I was working on before entering sleep mode. However, now it mostly involves a complete manual restart.
Genius bar diagnosis and treatment: When I brought it in 2 weeks ago, it was presumed to be a software problem. My whole computer was erased and restored back to factory settings. The problem persisted, though it was not as frequent as before the system was reset. I brought in my computer again two days ago and this time they kept it overnight to run full diagnostics and look at the hardware. Nothing was found to be wrong. They say the next step is to send it off to look at the Main Logic Board, but I would like more opinions before I pay that hefty price.
Past history: in the 2 years since I have had the laptop, the link cable to the hard drive has needed to be replaced twice. Additionally, (probably unrelated, but who knows), my charger short circuited on me about 6 months ago.
Perhaps this indicates mishandling, but I am extremely careful with my computer. I transport it in a hard case shell along with a padded Incase. Being a college student, I need a personal computer and I treat my Mac very well with all necessary precautions. I am more than a little upset that having made such an investment for an Apple laptop that now Apple is not holding up their end of the deal.

Me three; I just got my pb, so I was worried that this was a hardware flaw. You've both had yours for some time, I take it, and this just started happening (presumably, right after an OS update)?
I always closed my G3-500 iBook lid and tossed it in my work bag with hardly a care, and it never disappointed me by failing to wake up in exactly the same state in which I'd left it -- until the day it bit the dust, almost a month ago. The PB has really been a disappointment so far in that regard. Seems like every other time I close it, when I open it up again it's mysteriously switched itself off.
I will try the old CmdOption+PR and see if this happens again afterward.

Having to wait for Trackpad and Keyboard to work when waking from sleep, any solutions?

I have a 2012 MBP 13" base model (OSX 10.8.2) and when I first brought it was really fast at waking from sleep (lid being closed) and the trackpad and keyboard would work instantly. Now I'm having to wait 20+ seconds before I can do anything with the trackpad or keyboard. It usually happens after the mac has been asleep more than an hour, any solutions to this problem?

I'm having exactly this issue. I have a 15" MacBook Pro SR as well. It's happened four or five times since I installed Leopard yesterday. The trackpad works but the keyboard is completely dead. Also, choosing "Restart..." from the Apple menu doesn't work, as other apps fail to quit and (if I quit them with the trackpad) I get an error that the finder has failed to quit. As with JGB5, this happens after the MBP wakes from sleep -- sometimes resleeping/reawakening it fixes it, but sometimes the keyboard dies a couple of minutes afterwards anyway, and a restart is required.

Macbook Pro restart after waking from sleep

Hi all,
Since I've installed Mountain Lion (10.8.2) on my 13" Late 2011 Macbook Pro I've been experiencing a quite annoying problem. The computer, which is connected to an external monitor through Thunderbolt to HDMI will restart (Sometimes to a gray screen with a progress bar) after waking from sleep. I've done some research and it would appear as though the problem is related to the display driver.
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this peculiar problem or if there's a quick solution.

Keyboard Viewer window opens up after waking from sleep and screensaver

I have the MacBook keyboard freezing problem since upgrading to Leopard. One time (at band camp), I opened the Keyboard viewer so I could enter some text prior to rebooting. Now, the keyboard viewer pops up after every wake from sleep, return from screensaver (both password protected), and sporadically when switching/quitting applications.
I have tried rechecking and unchecking the "keyboard viewer" and "show input menu in menu bar" in System Preferences->International->Input Menu. While not a serious problem, it is rather annoying. How do I get the keyboard viewer to stop opening?
On a related note, there must be a script or program that is run every time the computer wakes from sleep and password protected screensaver that prompts for a password. Anyone know where this is located?

Ok, I just tried that. I deleted com.apple.KeyboardViewerServer.plist. I then started my screensaver. When I came back in...the Keyboard Viewer was back and there was a new plist file that was created...so, something else must be controlling it.

Mac Pro Firewire Problems

I use an external Firewire 800 drive for Time Machine and a MOTU 828 mkII Audio Interface (Firewire 400) on my new (refurb) Mac Pro. Everytime I shutdown, restart or sleep the Mac Pro, I lose Firewire connection to either the drive, the audio interface or both. Unplugging and replugging the firewire cables usually doesn't work and I'll have to restart the Mac until it recognizes the firewire devices. Regardless of what start-up procedure I use (firewire plugged in before or after), it's hit or miss. Usually once it's recognized, it's stable. Oddly, the firewire devices show up in System Profiler even if they aren't recognized elsewhere - desktop for the drive or Audio Midi Setup for the audio interface. On my old G5 with Tiger, the same drive and audio interface worked perfectly and I could turn them on or off at anytime and have them be instantly recognized.
I have seen posts about similar problems both here and on other boards. Has anyone got to the bottom of this problem? Is it my Mac Pro or is it a Leopard bug? Just curious before I make the call to Apple.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my first post. I have the audio interface plugged into the rear firewire 400 port and the backup drive plugged into the rear firewire 800 port. No daisy-chaining involved and strictly just those two firewire devices. I'm going to do some testing with using the front ports and see if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Radeon X1900 and mac pro graphics problems

Hi all,
i've a mac pro with two xeon cpu's (2,66GHz) in it. 2GB main memory and a radeon X1900 graphics card. on this mac i use bootcamp beta 1.4, installed the newest driver for this version from the apple support side. also i have updated the graphics FW to the newest version. so all things are on up to date.
my problem is the following: if I play some very graphics intensiv games like STALKER or BIOSHOCK (yes i use my mac for works and sometimes to play), it seems that the graphics card will be to hot. I get a lot of pixel errors. horiz. lines and after a while windows xp is freezeing. so I must reboot the maschine. also VPU recovery comes up.
I've tried several settings (800x600/1024x768/until maximum). 2-3 minutes the game is running well. after that my fans spin up like a plane, get the errors on the pixel side and the game crashes or windows xp is freezing.
i don't know any solution yet. can anyone help me? have some others the same problem?

Hi There,
I was having the exact same problem playing command and conquer 3 in Win XP. I'd play for about 5 minutes or so with the fans spinning at full speed (sounding like the mac was about to 'takeoff'), and then it would just crash.
I followed the advice here, took the graphics card out, clean the dust out and hey presto, the problem was fixed! My MacPro is about 6 months and i was surprised how much dust had got clogged up in there!

X1900 and Mac Pro Fan problems

I just got my new system today.
I transferred all my data from my old G4 tower to my new system.. and all was good. I deleted the data from my old G4 as I am going to sell it soon.
Alas, when I go to try out my fancy smancy new grfx card... I fire up WoW... and futz around for a bit..
the fans are going nutso.. i don't know if it is the ATI card or the system fans... I can't forsee WoW pushing the ATI hardware that much to cause such a whine in the fans..
Anyways, I quit out of WoW.. and fired up the Quake 4 demo I had downloaded. Part way through the screen goes black, as if it went into sleep mode.
Can't do anything.. the fans are screaming so loudly.. so I hold the power button to shut down. She won't start up after this.. just ramps the fans up and the screen stays black.
I unplugged everything. Then plugged it all back in.. and as soon as I plug in my power cable.. the comp restarts itself...
what is going on here? I don't know if this is a power issue or a heat problem.. or what...
I dread the thought of having to put all 80 gigs of that data back onto my G4 and take this sucker back to the apple store..
But I don't want a computer that flips out and sens its fans speeding for certain death...
any thoughts?

Mac Pro 2008 always crash after sleep and after first start

Hello, new in the forum,
2 years ago, I replaced the main disk of a Mac Pro 2008 for a SSD Samsung 470 256 Go.
Until then, it always crashed 1 or 5 minutes after sleep mode (which I didn't used much), and not always 10 to 15 minutes after the first start of the day.
No matter if I was working on it or not… Suitcase installed or not (no font problem here). Rest of the day was fine (if no sleep !).
The difference of speed was so big and "good" that I dealed with it. I though that the Mac Pro was a little old for the SSD technology, and that Apple would fix it, with chance…
2 weeks ago, I installed Maverick :
I got crashs during the work flow too. I needed to re-start 3 times at least… Re-start without extension was ok (or not), re-start, crash, re-start without extension, restart ok. I used Onyx, did PRAM too. And sometimes, I needed to re-install Maverick or even to do a clean-install !
So I suspected the Samsung 470 for all (sleep and work crashs) and replaced it for a Samsung 840 Pro 512 Go.
And the Mac Pro returned to Mountain Lion.
Not really better : no crash one day (yeeeees!) and crash after the first start the next day (nooooo!). Every time I tested sleep mode, it crashed.
My system :
Mac Pro 3.1 - 2,8 GHz - Quad
Mountain Lion, 10 Go ram DDR2, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, 30' cinema display.
Adobe CS5 alone (minimal install) with Onyx to repair after each crash.
Could it be the video card, the mother board, the age of the boy ?

I said that Finder and apps were blocked after 10 seconds (without extension).
But it was to clic on Launchpad that blocked all, and 5 minutes later it works again.
I did clic again on Launchpad, it blocked and 2 minutes later it appeared full screen but with rainbow circle, and quit.
- Restarted with extensions. Kernel panic!
- Restarted the mac and the grey screen with Apple blocked, without any mouse this time. 15 minutes later, still blocked.

Mac Pro won't wake from sleep on SSD boot drive

MacPro is unresponsive awaking from sleep, regardless of what is running. I've put my system & apps on a 120G Mercury Extreme Pro 2.5", with my data residing on SATA. So far, I've reset PRAM, had logic board replaced thru Apple Care, archived & reinstalled, and am currently trying to resolve with a level 2 tech, although scheduling calls is becoming prohibitive & frustrating. Have been at it for 5 weeks. Installed system onto SSD using CarbonCopy Cloner from SATA. Mac is a mid 2010 Refurb 2.66. Any insight would be helpful.

I'm using a OWC 120GB SSD on my mac pro with no problems.
I recall that sometime back sometime after I got my SSD there was a report (like this one) that Sandforce-based SSD's (like OWC's) had some sleep-related problem associated with hibernate mode. There was supposed to be a firmware update but I don't know if it ever was released. If it was it was certainly after I got my SSD.
At any rate, type,
pmset -g
in the terminal and see if it says hibernatemode is 0. If it's non-zero change it to 0,
sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
