Lacie Thunderbolt drive able to be encrypted?

Hi, I have got a 2TB Lacie Thunderbolt drive (great little thing!) But since I use it for large documents that I need when on the road I usually do format the external drives encrypted, Since sensitive data is on there and in hotels always is a risk that something gets stolen.I used PGP before Lion and was happy when I was able to retire it with Lion. My question is: I don't see a possibility to encrypt the raid here, do I miss something?
Thanks

Create a disc image file using a Format of "sparsebundle." This type of image file will expand as needed. For simpliciy you can even select the folder containing all your sensitive files and create a new disc image from the entire folder. Disk Utility will provide a range of options including the type of encryption desired.

  • LR3 can't find files after copying my previous hard drive to a new Lacie Thunderbolt drive

I transferred my LR3 files from my WD hard drive to my new Lacie Thunderbolt drive and now I can only get the preview and it says the file is missing.  Is there a setting I need to change that I am not aware of?

You have moved your image files outside of Lr (via your OS) and now Lr has lost the connection to your images. This happens every time you move images outside of Lr. Lr stores in its catalog - among all the other things - also the location of your images, and if the location stored in the catalog is different than the situation onyour hard drive you get the "missing" file message. "Missing" means that Lr does not "know" where your images are.
You have to point Lr to the location of your image files to fix the broken link.
In the Grid View (left side) in the folders panel you should see question marks in front of the folder names. That is Lr's indication that the link to the folders is broken.
Go to the top-most folder in the hierarchy of the folders that show the question mark and right-click it (click with the right-hand button of you rmouse). Select <Find missing folder> in the fly-out menu, navigate to the coresponding folder on your LaCie and click on it. Lr will then also find the sub-folders under that folder on idt own - provided that you have not changed the folder names or the folder structure.
If you have done that you have to "point" Lr to each folder individually with the procedure described above.
BTW you will also get the "missing" message when you open Lr but your external drive is not switched on.

  • Aperture Library Very Slow Copy to LaCie Thunderbolt Drive

Just installed new LaCie Thunderbolt drive and copying various media files to it. Music and video files copied like a rocket. My Aperture folder is copying as slow as molasses. Right now it says 2 days to copy 211GB. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, I misread Mtn Ed's last note.  My USB2 was stalling out at 2-3 MB per second.  Quite a bit slower than the stated Thunderbolt rate to say the least.  There is a portion of the Aperture Library that copies at a very slow speed, but after an hour or so it kicks back up to normal file transfer rates.  Finder was originally estimating over 20 hours for the copy to complete.  Now the total elapsed time will be about 3 hours for 350GB.

  • New iMac 27" and cannot get it to mount a new LaCie thunderbolt drive. Any suggestions?

My new iMac 27" finally arrived and seemed to be working fine, until today when I received, from Apple Store, a LaCie d2, 3TB drive. Connected the Thunderbolt cables and powered it up. Rapidly flashing blue light on the drive but it does not mount on the desktop and does not show in the system report. Could be a bad drive or.........
    All help appreciated.

Can you see the drive in the System Report or Disk Utility?
One thing I read was that you need to do is to shut down, and unplug everything, your iMac, the Thunderbolt drive, everything. Then reconnect, and start up the iMac. Seems to cure everything.
If not, return the drive to the Apple store, and see if that fixes it. If that doesn't fix it, then return the iMac within the 14 day no questions asked return period and get a new one. You'll have to move fast.

  • Any experience with LaCie Thunderbolt drive?

LaCie's thunderbolt drive is getting reasonably good reviews on the Apple store -- http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/H7150ZM/A.
Good, save for the fan noise. It sounds like in some units, for some people, it's intolerable.
Anyone here have experience with it? I'm considering it as my primary video editing drive.

1 TB, 7200. Only have 3-weeks experience but no problems so far. Huge improvement in FCP X performance. Attributed most of my problems with lock-up, dropped frames, beachball, etc. to disk drives. FCP X simply won't work reliably with USB, FW400 on my system. FW800 (pure) is okay. TBolt is better choice. LaCie has 2 drives inside metal case - significantly more drive noise than my WD FW800. Not a major issue for me but could be problematic if you're trying to record naratives while editing.

  • Why will my Lacie Thunderbolt drive not mount?

Yesterday my laptop died during an export, with my hard drive plugged in. Upon restarting I noticed the drive would not mount or appear anywhere on my computer (disk utility, system profiler, finder etc) I at first assumed there may have been damage to the drive, so attempted to use it on another computer. However upon plugging it in, it mounted perfectly and worked great, but still can not be seen by my computer. All other drives mount fine, it is only with this drive, on my comptuer where there is an issue.
Anyone else ever expierence something like this?

very likely a bad SATA bridge card.
The data bridge between the USB /Thunderbolt cable and the actual HD accounts for about 90% of all such occurances.
If so it means your HD is fine, rather the enclosure and bridge need to be changed.
Is your a HD or a SSD by Lacie ? (these contain Seagate HD if its a conventional HD).

  • Lacie Thunderbolt Drives Unmounting From Lion?

I have a Macbook Pro (Core i7). I upgraded to Lion and now my two Laice drives unmont randomly. My setup is two drives and a Dell monitor connected via Thunderbolt.
Since the drive unmont regularly, I cannot get a full backup of my system now. APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS BUG ASAP.

This is not a bug. It was a problem with ESET security software. This took a lot of work to find.

  • Lacie 2big thunderbolt drive won't stay asleep

I am connecting a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt drive to a 15" Macbook Pro late 2013. When the computer sleeps, the drive spins down and then immediately spins back up again, on and on. The drive will not stay asleep, but constantly powers down and then back up, down and then back up, on and on. Ejecting the disk first has no effect. In an odd twist, if I connect the disk through the thunderbolt port on a lacie esata/thunderbolt adapter that has an esata drive also connected and powered on, then the disks will power down and stay down when the computer sleeps. If, however, there is not a powered on esata disk connected to the hub, then the lacie thunderbolt drive will not stay asleep.
I contacted Lacie technical support and they replied "The automatic shut-off feature is based off the drive detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port. If your computer, even when powered off, keeps a little current running through, the drive may not know it is supposed to shut off or on. "
Has anybody else had this problem or connected this drive and had it work properly?

I have two of the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt devices (I hesitate to call them 'drives' because each device has two disk drives in the enclosure) and when I put my MBP to sleep (which is seldom) the drives 'sleep' (no spinning sounds).
I'm not sure why your device would be "detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port" - unless that's something new in the Retina machines (which I don't have!).
If I were you, I would work your way up the tech chain of command at LaCie - I've owned their drives for decades and have always had good luck with their technical support, even if I had to notch it up a bit to get satisfactory results.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Lacie Thunderbolt disconnecting and reconnecting spontaneously

My Lacie Thunderbolt drive is spontaneously disconnnecting (unmounting) and remounting about once a minute. I have tried shielding the cable ends with aluminum foil (found in another thread) but this doesn't help. Proximity to my iPhone 4S doesn't seem to make a difference. Switching to another firewire 800 cable next to the Thunderbolt cable doesn't make a difference.
    (late 2011 MacBook Pro 15)
    Any ideas?

Try restarting your phone and computer. Make sure itunes is up to date. Try different USB port.

  • Formatting a Thunderbolt drive

I'm trying to set up a Lacie Thunderbolt drive as my recording drive from a Macbook Pro. At present the 4TB drive is configured as Raid 0, Extended Journaled. But I see Apple advising that a recording drive should be Unjournaled. Yet when I try to select 'Unjournaled' from the file menu for this drive in Disk Utility, that option is greyed out.
Any views on where I should go?

Since I pretty much know.. that you know what you're talking about.. I won't press the point.
However, I agree that journaling is a good idea on a system drive and in fact it may help preserve disk integrity resulting from a system crash I maintain that it offers absolutely no benefit to a drive used exclusively for audio.
And, if you haven't tested it...  try recording 12 tracks (approx 7-10 minutes worth) to a journaled drive, next, try the same test to the same drive formatted with journaling off.

  • Ejecting thunderbolt drive crashes iMac

    Hello!
Hoping someone can help me with this issue. I use a LaCie thunderbolt drive (connected via thunderbolt) to keep video editing projects on, the drive functions just fine on startup and while its running, however, upon ejecting the drive my iMac crashes. When i connect the drive via USB3 the drive & my computer function normally & I can eject the drive. This is my only thunderbolt drive and the only computer I can test this on, but is something wrong with my thunderbolt I/O? Or is there a weird software issue that I'm not aware of?
    Thanks in advance.

Best case scenario is that you may just need to update a driver or firmware for the drive.
I had an old DVD player from Lacie that didn't work until I updated the firmware.
Check out their web site and download anything relevant.
Also, make sure you haven't got both Thunderbolt and USB3 cables plugged in at the
same time. The old Lacie drives only liked *ALL* Firewire or *ALL* USB serially
    connected devices.
Next you should probably eliminate hardware problems one by one. Try using a different
cable, a different port and a different drive if you can get hold of / borrow one.
If all that fails or you have taken it as far as you can, contact the re-seller to see if they
can test the drive at their facilities or Lacie.

When I plug in my Lacie (thunderbolt) External Drive it doesn't show up on the desktop. I need to move some stuff out of my hard drive to make room. I have very little room left on the hard drive and need to move an iPhoto library.

i have a lacie, and i encrypted it.  i had to wipe it, because it kept dropping off over and over and re-logging in.  so unencrypted i went.
at some point it wasn't recognized at all.  sometimes disk utility would open it, but then it got to the point that it wouldn't recognize it either.
i hadn't realized that the power supply was dysfunctional.  but i was able to recover it using disk warrior at the last deep breath it took.  the disk itself still works, but not in that housing.

Have you tried any of these soundcards designed for 2.0?
The 3.0 port is categorically designed to be comoatible with all 2.0 devices. The port itself will adapt to the usage parameters of the device.
But if you really want to downgrade, then simply plug any 2.0 hub into a MBA 3.0 port. The ports on the hub will be 2.0.

I am hoping if you can confirm if I can overcome this issue so I can use my thunderbolt drive on my new laptop. I have already tried downloading the driver from the Lacie support website but no luck? Any help or confirmation would be appreciated.

hmm. perhaps the drive was designed to work only on MacOS machines? Seems stupid to limit that, but it doesn't seem like a Lenovo limitation.
Hmm. seems to be a windows/device/BIOS thing.
EDIT: seems that there should be a setting somewhere to change the Thunderbolt firmware permissivity

  • Mountain Lion Time Machine Encryption Fails with External Thunderbolt Drive

I have a Buffalo 1TB MiniStation external Thunderbolt/USB3.0 Drive that I am trying to select from Time Machine with Encryption on. It fails. Further, when attempting to encrypt the drive from Disk Utility, it succeeds however when mounting the disk displays "Unusable Disk" after the password prompt and can only be mounted by re-formatting with encryprion turned off.
Selecting repair disk also does not work as the drive fails to mount.
This can be duplicated using the either connection (Thunderbolt or USB).
I called the manufacturer of the drive and they state it is "Apple's problem".
    Any help here?

Unlikely. If encryption works for other USB3/Thunderbolt drives, then it is definitely Buffalo's problem. At this time, there aren't many such drives so it is hard to say. Buffalo's Time Machine customers don't seem to be happy with Buffalo's support: http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/bd-p/0101
