Lacie Thunderbolt hub wont recognize esata RAID

Picked up the Lacie Thunderbolt-Estata Hub today.  Hooked it up, and it didn't recognize either of my Newer Technologies RAID external drives.
It also would not recognize a single bare drive that I connected with an estata cable.
I reset the PMU, and re-started my Macbook Pro.
It would then recognize one of the Newer Tech RAID enclosures, but not the other.
Tried resetting again... same issue.
Only then it got worse.  Grey screen at re-start and the spining wheel with no boot.
Unplugged the TB hub and it immediately booted fine.
Replugged in the Lacie hub and again, one enclousure showed up, and the other would not.
Anyone have any ideas with these enclousures specifically and the Lacie hub?  Why would one show up fine, but not the other?
Why the issues every re-boot if I leave the Thunderbolt plugged in?
Tried switching ports, cables, etc.  Always the same: only one external enclousure will show up.
Hooking up to 2011, 2.3ghz 2011 MPB
12gb ram
500 gb SSD Boot drive
Lion 10.7.4

No body has bumped into this yet?

  • Help with LaCie eSata Thunderbolt Hub

I have a couple of Icy Dock 4-bay drive enclosures.  At the moment one is set up with a JBOD configuration, and the other is set up as two mirrored RAID sets, each 3TB.
The Icy Dock enclosures support both USB and eSATA.  When LaCie came out with their eSata/Thunderbolt hub I thought, "Awesome.  I'll get one of those babies and connect the drives that way.  It will be faster than USB, etc."
So last Friday my LaCie eSata Thunderbolt hub was delivered and I proceeded to hook the two Icy Docks up via eSata.  I can't get things to work, though.  Both drives, which work just fine over USB, don't even seem to want to appear on my iMac.  On the occasions when they do, the iMac only "sees" one of the 4 JBOD drives, for instance...
What am I doing wrong here?  Is there something obvious I'm missing?  Do the drives need to be formatted in a particular way?  Is there a driver my iMac needs to work with them?
Really hoping you can help because I'd love to take full advantage of the eSata speeds...
    Thanks in advance!

Eurika!!!!! I switched the THUNDERBOLT ports in the iMac and BINGO! So it would appear that the Ports had to be HARD-RESET on the MAC after resetting the PRAM.

  • I'm booting from a new LaCie Thunderbolt SSD and it won't wake from sleep.

As my boot drive I have a new 1TB LaCie Thunderbolt SSD Disk. It's connected to a 27" 2.7 GHz Intel i5 iMac (mid 2011). I'm running OS X 10.8.2. Nothing else is connected on Thunderbolt.
Everything runs fine and very fast, with the one exception of not waking from sleep.
When I try to wake it up, the screen illuminates and the desktop is not completely frozen: I can drag windows around, but I can't open applications or do anything with the Finder. I get a spinning beachball if I move the cursor over the menu bar at the top. The only option is to restart.
I've contacted LaCie and they say their devices are "storage devices" and not "system drives". Yet I've been running my system from a 1TB LaCie D2 for at least a couple of years. I pointed out to LaCie support that nowhere on the box does it say their devices are for storage only.
    Any suggestions?

@Kappy - not the most useful of replies mate to be honest. After all, there is a strong possibility that this has everything to do with the way OS X and the thunderbolt interface handle wake from sleep states.
    @kbrine:
I am having exactly the same problem but with slightly different hardware:
    iMac 27 (mid-2011) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Booting from a Crucial M4 SSD in an OWC SATA enclosure connected to a Lacie eSata thunderbolt hub (which is connected to the iMac).
In normal use the drive is super fast and works really well.
But my problem is exactly as you describe, put the machine into sleep, and on wake everything appears to come back ok however you can't open apps from the dock and the spinning beachball appears. You can't do anything else and you have to reboot.
Now the interesting thing is that if I put the machine to sleep and then wake it up again within 1 minute everything works perfectly. After a longer period of time - and I'm presuming when the energy saving profile moves to a deeper sleep state (I don't know for sure so speculation from me here) - I get the problem we are having and I have to reboot.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Updated my SSD to the latest firmware.
No firmware updates available for the OWC enclosure nor the Lacie eSata hub (at least, not that I could find)
Turned off bluetooth (others on this forum had a problem with BT interfering with Thunderbolt displays coming back on after sleep)
Turned off 'Automatic Brightness Adjust' (again, based on Thunderbolt Display problems that others have reported)
I've tried out AutoEJECT and Jettison apps that unmount all external drives and re-mount them when waking from sleep. They've made absolutely no difference. Save yourself a few $$ and don't bother buying them from the App Store.
I've tried unplugging and re-inserting the Thunderbolt cable connecting my eSata hub to the iMac. No effect.
And that's as far as I've got. There are only two things left for me to try:: disable 'Power Nap' which - apparently - can also cause problems with Thunderbolt devices during sleep. But I'm not confident with that being the solution. Turn the power off to the Crucial M4 when the problem occurs and then re-power it in the hope that it causes some sort of refresh of the connection to happen. Again, not sure that's a good solution either as I don't want to be powering down my SSD every time I bring the iMac out of sleep!!!
So I too am open to ideas and opinions on what might be causing these wake-from-sleep problems arising when Mac OS is booted from an external thunderbolt drive.

  • New Mac Pro: Will I need to toss out my esata RAID systems?

Can't wait to buy the new MacPro.  However, I have 3 RAID systems, hooked up to ESATA RAID controllers.  Will I be able to use these with the new mac pro?  is there like a thunderbolt-estata raid converter?

There are several ThunderBolt to eSATA boxes avaiable:

This converts to ExpressCard34, then you add an eSATA expresscard to it:

  • Win XP wont recognize the 400GB USB external HDD

I just bought a external 400gb hdd from toshiba,
    usb 2.0
    no psu
says plug and play right on the box and windows xp wont recognize it.
The little blue led comes on, but nothing works at all.
The only thing that happened once, is I THINK xp recognized it as an MTP device.. which I got updates for, but still nothing.
I updated all my drivers, nothing seems to be working at all.
Please let me know how I can go about making this work.
    Thanks

    > The only thing that happened once is I THINK xp recognized it as an MTP device which I got updates for, but still nothing.
    What MTP means exactly?
Did you check if the external HDD needs an additional power supply?
Did you test it on different computers/notebooks?
Did you try to remove the HDD hubs and controllers from the device manager and rebooted the notebook in order to reinstall this devices??? If not -> do it

  • I am trying to connect my LaCie thunderbolt 2 5big drives to my new Mac Pro.  They will not mount.  If I unplug them and plug them into my MBP they mount immediately

I have 2 LaCie Thunderbolt 2 5Big drives.  I have been using them successfully with my mbp.  I just purchased a Mac Pro and plugged them in and they will not mount.  I am stumped as how to get the Mac Pro to recognize them

This is the Mac Pro black cylinder, late 2013 model?
Have you tried one at a time? Have you tried different ThunderBolt ports?
What display are you using and what port is it plugged into? You may want to be sure your drives and your displays are not on the same bus.

  • Lacie Thunderbolt drive able to be encrypted?

Hi, I have got a 2TB Lacie Thunderbolt drive (great little thing!) But since I use it for large documents that I need when on the road I usually do format the external drives encrypted, Since sensitive data is on there and in hotels always is a risk that something gets stolen.I used PGP before Lion and was happy when I was able to retire it with Lion. My question is: I don't see a possibility to encrypt the raid here, do I miss something?
    Thanks

Create a disc image file using a Format of "sparsebundle." This type of image file will expand as needed. For simpliciy you can even select the folder containing all your sensitive files and create a new disc image from the entire folder. Disk Utility will provide a range of options including the type of encryption desired.

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

When I plug in my Lacie (thunderbolt) External Drive it doesn't show up on the desktop. I need to move some stuff out of my hard drive to make room. I have very little room left on the hard drive and need to move an iPhoto library.

i have a lacie, and i encrypted it.  i had to wipe it, because it kept dropping off over and over and re-logging in.  so unencrypted i went.
at some point it wasn't recognized at all.  sometimes disk utility would open it, but then it got to the point that it wouldn't recognize it either.
i hadn't realized that the power supply was dysfunctional.  but i was able to recover it using disk warrior at the last deep breath it took.  the disk itself still works, but not in that housing.

I recently upgraded to the newest iTunes version and now my older Ipod is no longer recognized by my computer. iTunes doesnt open, it just gives me an error message in the bottom right corner saying Unknown Device. Ive tried looking for / updating drivers, reseting, everything and nothing works. I tried every USB port on my laptop as well. Running Win XP. Can anyone offer any other suggestions on how i can fix this???
    Thanks

Its been working perfectly for 4 years until last week. I have the USB/FireWire combo for hooking it up to my computer. It worked with all the older version of iTunes and now that 7.1.1 is on there, it wont recognize it at all. The computer is convinced there are no drivers for the "unknown device" and all searches performed for the missing drivers come up empty. The computer cannot see the iPod as an iPod, and none of this happened until I downloaded the most recent iTunes.
