LaCie won't mount...

I have a LaCie 160GB external drive connected to my G5 dual 2.0GHz via FW800. It mounted and stayed mounted the first time I plugged it in (haven't done anything to it as far as plugging/unplugging anything goes), and was always on my desktop. That was a month ago.
Now, it is not mounted on my G5 at all. I pressed the power button on the front to turn it off then on again, but nothing. I restarted the G5, nothing. I searched with Spotlight for some of the files I knew were on there, nothing.
Is it a driver issue? Did I "eject" it without knowing?
I repaired permissions a couple days ago 1.) as a routine and 2.) because Reason 2.5 (MIDI sequencing program) was giving me trouble. The repaired permissions fixed the Reason 2.5 problem, and I remember being able to access the LaCie after the permission repair.
Thanks.

Not sure which drive you have - but the d2 drivers haven't changed for a while

An iSight has been known to affect firewire drives mounting.
You could try a firewire reset
from Mike Mihalik, LaCie
"Seems like the FireWire issue needs to be revisited quite often. Here is my often repeated suggestion which appears to clear up many FireWire issues: reset the FireWire ports. Panther has a Finder Preference to show mounted volumes on the Desktop. You must set this for mounted drives to be visible. Please follow these instructions to reset your FireWire port.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
Here is a summary:
* shut down and disconnect all external drives and peripherals ; make sure nothing is connected to the FireWire ports
* use Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal boot drive
* shut down and disconnect the AC power from the computer as well as the drives; if laptop, also remove battery
* let sit unpowered and unconnected for 15 minutes
* reconnect AC power to only the computer (battery too if laptop)
* restart computer
* verify that FireWire ports are visible within Apple System Profiler
* reconnect FireWire drive (only one); refresh window within Apple System Profiler to rescan the FireWire bus; confirm that drive is visible
* confirm drive is OK by using Apple Disk Utility and apply First Aid
* repeat for other drives, one at a time"

  • LaCie Won't Mount With Mavericks. Any New Leads For Remedy?

I know this question has been asked many times. I've tried the Lacie website, can not get an answer, and a lot of the answers to this question are dated. LaCie won't mount. What Can I Do? Any suggests for an external that is compatible with Maverick, and works???!!!!

The problem is that it won't mount after it has been unmounted. A friend of mine who's a Mac Repairman told me that it could be a number of things...
he told me to check if any smells were coming from the drive...
    nope. check.
If the fan had stopped working... nope. check.
If it's a problem being caused by the enclosure.... that i'm going to check on.
I called TekServe in Manhattan and when i get paid, i'm going to see if that's the case.
But they want 1200.00 for data retrieval in a worse case scenario... and i'm going to shop around for that one. I have a feeling that they corner the market in that area for Mac repair and they probably feel they can charge whatever they want and people will pay.
1200.00 is another computer. I'd rather do my research before shelling out that kind of dough.
I had unwittingly unmounted my first external 3 years ago .... it's a Wacom, and it mounted with no problem after literally a minute.
So i don't know why this LaCie is giving me problems.
So i'll try changing enclosures and check out reports for the companies with the best all-around reports on their externals before i buy.
It may not last forever, but i should get better than an external HD's "refusal" to mount once unmounted.
    It just doesn't make sense.
Besides, i have a feeling that my computer won't register it's existence if it doesn't mount to make itself known.
    Tell me if i'm off.
BUt i will consider the other programs that you guys have suggested.

  • My dumb external LaCie won't mount.....AAARRRGGHH!!!

I'm really hoping someone can help me here. I was working on some illustrations and in Manga studio debut, i opened a window to post some work i created into my external harddrive. I mistakenly hit the "eject" symbol that unmounted my hard-drive from my computer. So i said to myself,"No biggie... i'll just shut the drive off, unplug it, wait awhile, replug it, shut it on and it'll mount again.
    nope.
I shut it off, unplug it, restart the computer. plug it and turn the external harddrive power on... nothing. i wait patiently thinking it'll eventually kick in.
    no kicking.
i'm a 40 year old man i'm contemplating crying now... because more than 200 gigs of important work is on my drive and i can't access it.
That and stupid Leopard can't even do the most basic commands.. like accessing my printer. Just get that dumb beachball. Even opening System preferences gives me problems. More beachball.
I'm looking for help here. Please help.
How can i shed my computer of the recent upgrade and go back to 10.5.2?
and Since nothing can be wrong with my LaCie by just unmounting it, what can i do to get it to mount? Just leave it plugged on and powered and pray that the OS recognizes it and hope it mounts?
I don't have that kind of time.
If i need to retrieve all that data onto another new external, how much will that cost me?
I know i'm asking a lot of questions, but i'm desperate here.

  • Help! My Lacie won't mount!

Help! Help anybody out there can help.
I have recently bought a LaCie 1TB Rikibi External HD. It has been great so far and I have filled it with approx. 700GB. I have two partitions, one with 10GB (Windows) and one with appr. 990GB
Then a couple of weeks ago I unplugged the cable without "de-mounting" it.
After this my HD showed that it had 989GB available, even if there were 700GB of files there. All the files worked perfectly, and I had no problems at all.
Then yesterday I was bored and tried to find a solution, and then I came to Disc Utility. I pressed the repair button and it started repairing. Then I got the Error message. (My OS is in norwegian, but I will translate to the best of my abilities).
"Disc Utility cannot repair this disc. Back-up as many of the files as possible, format the disc again and restore the back-up'ed files"
Now the partition with 990GB is not available, it has been renamed "disk1s2" and is "deactivated". Therefor I cannot access my files and take a backup of them. I tried DiscWarrior and before I could rebuild I checked the preview, and there was only a couple of files, around 40GB left, the rest was gone.
I would like to take a back-up of the files, so the around 700GB that is there. Then I can format everything, but I dont want to loose all thoose files.
Since I cannot access my files on it, how would it be possible to backup and restore everything?
I dont have a extra 1 TB HD myself, but I can borrow one, but I dont want to erase this one in a hopeless attempt to retrieve my files! I contacted Lacie, but they just sent me to a company that wanted €400 to "retrieve" things.
Anyone have an idea of what I can do? Thank you in advance for answers.

    "disk1s2" and is "deactivated
Sound like an error in the structure. If DiskWarrior can repair the volume, and you only see 40GB you can try an App like DataRescue (Also a demo availible where you see which files, could be restored. With the demo you could only restore 1 file less the 10MB in size)  which COULD maybe restore your files.
Otherwise you can't do anything but bringing it to a professional data rescue company.
SO LONG don't work on the drive!!! Don't copy file to the drive, or use it for backup or dupicating file on the drive! Every operation will be deleting more and more from you old files!

  • Hard drive won't mount - but only on one Macbook Pro

    Hi guys
So I have a brand new Macbook Pro 2.4 with retina and 8gb (like 2 days old). I'm on Mavericks. This question also concerns a Lacie Rugged USB3 1TB drive, it is bus power only.
My lacie won't mount on my new mac. An identical lacie will, as will a few older other lacie drives I use for archiving and occassional long term backups. I've checked this unmountable drive on 8 different macs (friends, work, mothers) everything from other imacs, to old G5 power pcs, and even my mums ancient ibook g4. They'll all mount it. My macbook pro wont.
    * It's nothing to do with ports (all ports work and power various devices) and cables (different cables also do not work, and they work with other drives).
    * It does not appear in disk utility
    * It does not appear in the system profiler/report even though the ports show up no trouble
    * the drive powers and spins up
    * i've even just formatted the drive on another computer in extended journal and it still does not appear yet will still mount on another machine
I'm tearing my hair out. Help me! Does anyone have any idea's what the **** is up with this thing?
    Thanks

  • External Lacie drive won't mount

I have a older Lacie 160GB LaCie P3 extrenal drive that I can't mount. There never has been an issue with mounting it before in the method described below.
    Here is what happened:
I turned the drive on but the firewire was not connected so I turned the Lacie drive off.
I connected the firewire and turned the Lacie on and the (partitioned) drive mounted on the desktop.
I was looking through the files when I got the error message that the drive was disconnected without being properly ejected which I didn't do.
I tried turning the Lacie drive off and on but it won't mount. I get the same flashing light on the Lacie drive that I had before connecting the firewire.
I tried Disk Utility but it can't see the drive.
I tried connecting to my laptop but it doesn't mount there either or show up in disk utility.
    Questions:
Any idea how I can get it to mount?
Is there any risk of damage to the data by turning it on and off in an effort to get it to mount. I can hear it running.
    Thank you

LIkely (very) your SATA card is fried inside the box for same.
External HD are very easy to diagnose. Bad USB cable (on commercial sold USB drives) almost doesn’t exist anymore.
External USB HD have 4 'parts' (not counting the HD  internals)
    1. USB cable (never an issue anymore, approaching 100%)
    2. HD enclosure.....a plastic or metal box which cannot ever be an issue.
    3. the HD itself
    4. ....and last but not least is the epicenter of 'weak links' ,.....a SATA card/bridge that is connected to the HD inside the HD box, the size of a stick of gum, with SATA female on one side, and female USB on the other side, containing circuitry for data transfer between the SATA on the HD and to USB on the other.
While these bridge cards are better than they used to be, theyre still insanely unreliable.
There are literally probably MORE than 100,000 perfect external hard drives out there thrown away every year because people assume the "hard drive is bad" when really they could crack open the HD enclosure, remove the HD and put the good HD into a new enclosure.
See this video of the SATA CARD, its at 8:55min. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pS_EDsP2KI
All conventional HD external are nearly 100% like the video above.
See pic below,..a (much larger) SATA card as found inside a typical HD enclosure ($20 ebay)
This is the nasty piece pictured below causing all the "crazy" activity seen on external HD, very odd behaviour, some have called it "haunted hard drive syndrome".  Random ejects, random strange vanishing of the HD , especially in mid transfer of data.
the card attached to the TOP of the HD plugs in, that the SATA bridge

  • Forgot to eject LaCie HD - won't mount now - can it be fixed?

Through my own stupidity, I forgot to eject my LaCie external HD before I powered off the LaCie (it was late and I was tired). Now it won't mount on my iMac G5. I tried to repair it using Tiger's disk utility but to no avail. I just get an "exit error" message. Does anyone know if repairing the LaCie thru Tiger's disk utility would fix it? I'm afraid to try. Or is the LaCie now a lost cause?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Eugene,
Did the same a while ago. My LaCie was dead.
Using Data Rescue X (from Prosoft I believe) was quite helpfull. You can retrieve data from your 'dead' LaCie and fix the drive once your valuable data is rescued...

  • New Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt External Drive won't mount on Macbook Pro 8,1

I've searched, and am coming up empty handed. Any help would be appreciated.
    So I own a late 2011 Macbook Pro 8,1. that's running version 10.9.5.
I bought a brand new Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt External HD that won't mount via Thunderbolt, though it works fine with the USB. Any ideas as to why the Thunderbolt connection isn't working?

Silly question, but - did the drive come with a Thunderbolt cable or did you purchase one with the drive?

  • Lacie Hard Drives won't mount

My two Lacie hard drives won't mount on my G5 running Tiger. They were fine on my G4 iMac running Panther. I've tried using the Lacie Update Tool but the drives aren't recognised. I've tested the firewire cables on another drive that works and they're fine, so it's not cables.
Both drives power up okay and whir into action, but just aren't talking to the G5.

This happened to me with a LaCie external drive as well.
The problem is that LaCie formats the drives as PC-based
and not Mac Extended, so unless you reformatted the
drives to Mac when you started using them, your access
to them on any Mac may result in a failure to mount.
Once that happens retrieval of data is made more difficult
    because of this formatting incongruity.
There is no way you can get the data once your G4 quits
mounting them. If you can get the data off of the drives,
back it up and then reformat the drives using Mac's Disc
Utility. Then you can reload the data and I suspect all of
your Macs will then mount the drives via Firewire.
    Good Luck!

  • LaCie external drive won't mount on iMAC

    Hi,
My external LaCie external drive won't mount on my iMAC running 10.6.8 but will mount and show up on my PC as working fine, however I am not able to read the information on it as it was formatted for my iMAC. Therefore it leads me to believe this is a software issue.
I have reason to believe someone had changed the permissions and prevented the mounting of this external drive (which belongs to me)  so that the contents won't be found on my iMAC.
    How to resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cait

    Cait,
Please try a SMC reset, it may take 2-3 attempts for it to work. Look over the instructions below carefully.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
    I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
    Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains
    I wish you luck

Help! My back up Lacie suddenly won't mount. It shows up on my disk utility (but faded) and I tried to repair it with no benefit. I thought it might be a Lion problem, but my other Lacie is working fine. I tried using a different USB cable and unplugging everything, rebooting etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

There may be hardware problem with the drive. However you can try resetting the SMC. Don't be afraid to reset it 2-3x if the first time doesn't work.

  • Need help with Lacie Big Extreme that won't mount

    OK Guys,
My buddy's Lacie 1TB Big Extreme won't mount to any computer we try. The blue light is flashing. We have tried different cables on different computers. After a web search for similar problems we found out several people had success just plugging in a new power supply. So, we ordered one. Didn't work.
I can hear the drive spinning up. Oh, I guess I should mention this unit is out of warranty.
Here's my question. After some research, I found out this drive has 2 hard drives inside and set up as Raid 0. This is the way Lacie sets these up for use right out of the box. So if I take the Lacie enclosure apart and try to mount the drives separately in another generic enclosure what will I see in terms of the files written on a single drive (assuming it mounts) since I am dealing with an initial Raid 0 set-up? My intention is to save the files. Please help.

Same problem with an external LaCie Little Big Disk = does not mount, but shows up under FireWire in System Profiler. I assume it's a OS X issue, because I ran a software "Data Rescue II" and this software has recognized the disk.
Has probably something to do with one of the latest OS X updates, because I've used this disk with Time Machine now more than a year and never had a problem.
I recommend not to experiment with partitioning/reformatting (if you care about the data on the disk) and push Apple for a solution. It assume it's some kind of an access problem.

  • Ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2

ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2.
I updated to itunes 11.0.2 today, after delaying it for a looong time (I have it @ work and don't like the new layout).
Since then, none of my ipods will mount/show up/update. I've tried all USB ports, 3 ipods, 3 cords. Wondering if you know of any issues. I've restarted the mac about 15-20 times today since as soon as I hook up an ipod, itunes immediately spins the beach ball and won't let me click out of it.
I've restarted the ipods 10+ times each.
All of the ipods DO show up on my desktop though. Just not in itunes anywhere with 11.0.2.
One more thing: It's not the cables or the ipods: they both mount fine when connected to my laptop (running old *** 10.4.11 and itunes 9.)
Machine is a Mac Pro running 10.6.8.

Finding this Post took some time but I thought it was me talking when I read it. I was having the exact same issue. I have a G3 I've been upgrading like mad, including a Sonnet G4-500 CPU a Maxtor 60gb & 80gb HDs 1gb of RAM a new LaCie Firewire800 PCI card Graphics card etc. the latest was installing Panther 10.3.9 on the new 80gb HD and also swapping out the old CD-ROM and replacing with the (Apple standard) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D combo drive in it's place. got everything up and booted and poof! no burning. Toast worked read/write no problem. iTunes could read and import no problem, but wouldn't burn a CD.
Downloaded "PatchBurn 3.1.3" installed, re-booted and all is OK in burner land again :>)
I wanted to just post my additional thanks to the lead to Patchburner, and I'm going to donate to the cause. It's worth a $20 donation just for my joy of not throwing this computer out the window!!
