Lack of audio in on a MBP

A processor failure has forced me to buy a new MBP. I make films and used my old MBP for editing and most importantly, capturing audio real time in stereo (live music) and mono for key interviews. Interviews often in remote places so I cannot cart the MBP around and use the built in mic - wind noise also a problem. New MBP cannot do this. Apple support suggest I spend $200 on Logic-Pro. any other solutions?

I've used the "audio in" to determine a fan's RPM, using a microphone. The problem I see with your application idea is the slow sample rate required. I believe choices are 11K, 22K or 44.1K samples per second for the audio input drivers - at least the version I've used. An example of an ocilloscope using the audio sound card drivers can be found at:

Perhaps you can modify this to suit.

  • I have three Blue Yeti USB Microphones, and when I try to create an aggregate device in Audio MIDI on my MBP it lets me select two microphones but not the third. I need all three for a podcast, any solutions?

I have three Blue Yeti USB Microphones, and when I try to create an aggregate device in Audio MIDI on my MBP it lets me select two microphones but not the third. At first I thought maybe the third microphone was just defected or something but I tested the mic individually and it works fine. It'll let me use two Blue Yeti's and another microphone but not three Yeti's at once.

  • Audio Input quality on MBP?

My wife's iBook is dying, so I am about to jump into a new MacBookPro which will now be "our" computer.
I currently have a US-122 that has always worked well on my iMac (G4) and the iBook. I understand that the drivers for the US-122 do not support the current 10.5 OS that I will get with the MBP.
So, how good is the audio input on the MBP? The "tech specs" just says it has one, not how many bits or anything. I suppose down the line I will get an interface/midi input, but for now I have plenty of pre-amp-like thingies (pre-amps and mixers) that I can use to get a signal into the thing.
    Any thoughts?

I'd recommend getting an interface, even a cheap one as a stopgap until you want to get something more robust. Cheap audio interfaces are so cheap, that one would only be a fraction of the cost of the MBP, but would be more than worth it.
I've done some work on a new MBP and the audio jacks are... well... they work, but I think you'd be well served to get even a modest USB interface and then plug all your preamps and mixer things into that.

  • IDVD lack of audio on 12 bit import

Lots of coasters, (looked at articles deleted encoded etc.) but no audio to iDVD. The forums and articles talk about sound synchro problems with 12 bit. To me, a complete lack of audio is not a "synch" issue. Is it a matter of semantics or will iDVD 6.01 simplly not encode 12 bit audio?

I don't think 12-bit audio would effect having no sound at all. As you said, it is a sync issue, so I suspect what you are experiencing is something else. But it brings up some questions...
    1) Is the missing audio only with 12-bit audio? Can you hear the audio fine if you import 16-bit audio?
    2) What are you importing from? Is this a DV format camcorder or are you by any chance trying to import MPEG files? Multiplexed audio can be an issue with iMovie.
    3) Did you check the audio settings of project? On the bottom you don't have volume set to 0 or something like that?

  • Audio USB crackles on MBP with Retina and Mountain Lion

I have a USB device connected to my MacBook Pro with Retina Display and the audio crackles no matter what I play.  I hardly have any processing working and there are no other USB devices.  I think that this was working under Lion but I think this is a problem under Mountain Lion.  Anyone else have this problem?  I am trying to determine whether the problem is in the MBP or the OS...  Thanks :-)

Could be it needs to be connected to both USB port by using a Y USB cable to supply enough power to it. And it won't show up unless there is a CD or DVD disc in it.

  • Why are the audio levels on a MBP so quiet?

I'm a musician and the MBP's low audio output has been problematic.
I've been using it as my main workstation at home in favor of my G5 desktop from 2003... and even as I'm running through my external audio hardware, my MBP's maximum volume is drastically lower than my G5. But in the studio, I can live with that; I don't need to blow my ear drums out anyway.
Performing live with my laptop is impossible though. My MPB gets nowhere near as loud as other laptops, even when I run through the same audio interfaces. Is there something I'm missing or this just a low quality soundcard that Apple ships with their new laptops? This is crazy. What kind of Pro laptop is this?

Open /Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup and select the output type, then alter the levels there and see how that helps ?

  • Audio volume levels on MBP

My week 22 MBP is awesome and has no crazy noises. I do notice that when set to maximum volume using only the MBP speakers the sound isn't all that loud. Not as loud as I would expect.I have no way of gaging this but I was wondering if anyone else shared the opinion.
    MacBook Pro 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Anything under 4 bars is inaudible.. This is valid for both 15"and 17"models. However the sound on 17" is louder and better due to two extra speakers. Hope this helps.

  • How do I fix lack of audio when transfer to DV tape from DVD through TV?

I learned that you can convert MPEG2 to .dv format by playing a DVD on your TV with your DV camera hooked up and recording the DVD as it plays on your TV. While I am able to record the video onto my DV casette, I get no audio. Does anyone know how to remedy this?

  • Nano lacks dual audio output?

When I plug in my Nano into the Alpine iPod adapter of my car audio deck unit, I have to unplug the headphones to get the Alpine to receive an audio signal.
I'm pretty sure that the regular iPods were able to receive an audio signal through the dock connector with the headphones plugged in.
Is this the way the Nano is supposed to work?
This is annoying because I've found that the easiest way to wear out the connectors of the headphones and the connectors of the iPod is to plug in then and unplug the headphones on a regular basis.
Can this be corrected in software? Perhaps a dual audio output can be activated with the next firmware release? If not, it should be possible to direct the audio output to the dock connector instead of the headphone output when the dock connector is active. This can be done as an optional setting in the menu since I would assume that not everyone would prefer this setting all of the time.

Did you get your Nano to play? I have a 420i adapter for my Alpine HU. Plugged in the Nano, the unit recognized it. The Alpine splash displayed on the Nano but, no sound.... Had a mini before and everything worked fine.

More information is need about the properties of your source media, how you are importing your source media, and whether you are watching/listening to the rendered or unrendered Timeline content via the Edit area monitor.
In the cases where you have lost Timeline content audio, have you ever taken the Timeline to an export to determine if the audio is also lost in the end product?
Also, in the cases where you have lost Timeline content audio and you are working with the rendered Timeline content, have you found any resolution to the issue by moving the audio to an upper track and/or creating new track on which to place the video audio?
Please review and consider the above and then we can talk about what next based on your reply.

  • Lacking preferred audio device setting in SPA525G/G2

...according to page 28 in the user guide here http://cisco.biz/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/csbpipp/ip_phones/user/guide/spa300-500-uc320w/SPA300-500-UC320W_UG_78-19372.pdf it's not supposed to be there. For the rest of the 50x-series and 9xx-series it's there, but not for the 525G/G2. This is quite troublesome when used with autoanswer. The phone remembers your last choice of audio device as long as it's booted but it occasionally reboots and that seem to set the default device back to speaker. Quite troublesome in a callcenter environment where all pickups are done via auto answer from a desktop application. Is there any way of setting this in the 525G/G2 to always be headset?

I have an enhancement request (CSCun63070) which should be in place around November. We'll need to wait until then to have such options. Look for the next releases.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE - Lack of audio control via laptop's volume wheel.

This doesn't really bother me much, but I've been curious for a while, so I may as well just ask.
In a gnome-session I am able to control my master volume with a little scrolling wheel built into the front of my laptop. This same wheel has no effect in xfce/openbox/awesome or anything else I've tried. I had a look at gnome's startup applications and found the commands 'gnome-sound-applet' and 'start-pulseaudio-x11' in there. I can start both in xfce/openbox/awesome, the former allows me to control the volume with an icon in the corner, but there's still no use for the scroll wheel.
Again, I'm only asking because I'm curious, but does anyone know of a program I can install or possibly a setting I could edit to give XFCE this same (admittedly frivolous) feature?

  • No audio on windows 8.1 mid-2012 MBP

I was able to install windows 8.1 pro on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro with relative ease and everything works fine... except a complete lack of audio. I have read in several forums to uninstall various audio devices and drivers, and I've tried downloading multiple versions of the Boot Camp system support drivers, but no matter what I do, nothing changes.
I paid for Windows almost a month ago and I've been wrestling with these issues on Boot Camp and these things ever since, this program needs more attention from the developers.
    Any advice would be greatly

Hi, it seems that You install windows in EFI mode, this problem is EFI related.
If windows is the only system on Your macbook, You must insert 64bit win8 dvd or USB flash and boot with Alt pressed.
You will see Dvd /Windows/ and Dvd /EFI/.Choose Dvd /Windows/ and install as usual, then use correct bootcamp drivers /version 5.1/, and it will be ok.

  • Improve audio out from MBP

I'm using my MBP more and more as a source for my home stereo. I connect the two via AirTunes using an Airport Express.
Since I'm using a nice receiver and quality speakers I've become more conscious of the quality of the digital audio coming from my MBP.
Setting aside the quality of the files which I understand and can address, what can I do to improve the output of my audio?
Is the soundcard being used to stream data to Airport Express? Is the Express decoding the files? Is the Express a weak link or is degrading the Audio Quality? Sorry about the Airport questions.
How about could sound be improved with an external sound card? Should I stream to stereo speakers using a different number of bits or Hz?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

The first thing I would do in your situation, just by way of defining the issues, would be to make a TOSlink connection from the headphone port on the MBP directly to the digital audio-in port on the receiver, and compare the sound quality with what you've been getting by streaming the audio wirelessly. That will tell you how much of the MBP's built-in audio-quality capability you sacrifice by relying on wireless streaming. It may be a lot or a little; I have no idea, but in your shoes I'd certainly want to know. Yes, wireless streaming is certainly convenient, but if it's costing you a significant amount of listening enjoyment, you may want to consider wired alternatives, or even storing your music on a different device from your computer.
