Lack of detail in Preview vs. GIMP using same image file.

Originally posted at usenet group: comp.graphics.apps.gimp
I am in the process of working on an image using GIMP's propietary
format, XCF. The image in question is approx. 6200x3200 px in size, at
a resolution of 72x72 dpi, RGB, True Color, 24-bit. The problem is
that when I export it to a more portable format, the image loses
clarity. I've uploaded an image to Photobucket demonstrating this.
This image consists of three windows, each displaying the same portion
of the piece I'm trying to export. The window top-left indicates the
original XCF format image at 100%, displaying in GIMP; the top-right
image is the same image at 100% exported to TIFF format (with no
compression), displaying in GIMP; the centre image is the latter TIFF
image, displayed in Preview.app, zoomed as close as possible to the
same degree as the GIMP images above - though in reality just a touch
larger, more like 110%. As is clear, the centre image is far less
detailed. <edit: I made this image forgetting that you can use "Use Actual Size" to view it. Nevertheless, when viewed at actual size the image is substantially smaller and less detailed.>
Could this be partly/altogether because i configured/calibrated
GIMP's display preferences to more accurately reflect my LCD screen's
resolution? in GIMP->Display Preferences, I manually set my monitor
resolution to 106x106dpi. However, the monitor resolution reported by
the windowing system, according to GIMP Display Prefs, is 75x75dpi.
I have tried saving as PNG without the resolution data, but the result is identical.
Can someone please explain this to me? Or, at the very least, suggest
a work-around? Is this, in actual fact, a problem with Preview.app or
my Quartz Extreme rendering?
I hope someone can help with this.
Thanks,
SiR G.

>I wish the developers could give us a switch to defeat this. PS displays, or at least hints at, sharpening when zoomed out.
They are quite set against it so I doubt it. Photoshop is really lying to you in many different ways when you judge sharpness at zoomed out levels. Of course, the only reason you see it in Photoshop is that it is a pixel editor. If you have rendered 1:1 previews, in Lightroom, you always see the effect of sharpening in the Library module when zoomed out as it is rendered from the preview image. In fact what you see there is the same when in Photoshop at power of two zoom levels (25%, 50%, etc.). So it is there, they just don't show it in Develop when you are zoomed out, where it would not tell you anything anyway.

  • Using same image twice

I want to use the same image twice, one in colour, the other black and white. But when I use the monochrome mixer, both images in the book turn to b/w. Do I have to import two separate images?

Using the right click menu (or shortcut key) duplicate the version - using the top stack menu extract item from the stack, make it b+w, drag it to the book and viola.

  • PreView and RAW or ORF image files

Should Preview be able to display ORF (RAW) image files.
If so how does one set it up to do so. Preview displays PSD and JPEG files OK.
    Thanks for any clues.

I don't think Preview supports RAW formats. iPhoto 08 can, but this article likes Aperture much better for RAW formatting. http://www.oreillynet.com/digitalmedia/blog/2007/08/iphoto08_is_good_butaperture.html

  • Use same image column twice in a report

    Hello,
I have a question  which is, can I use a same image column (example column A) twice in a report? first occurrence (column A) will show the image thumbnail and the second occurrence (column A) will show  image download link which opens image in a new window. Is it possible?
    Thanks

    LA-APEX-DEv wrote:
Yes, it's possible. However, if you intent to have two different images, then I would suggest you use a javascript to link or download the blob.
What on Earth for? Why is JavaScript necessary to download two different images? Even if this were in any way true, the OP is clear that the displayed thumbnail and download link involve the same image.
To accomplish this task, you either use decode or create a union query.
No, all that should be necessary is to reference the image column twice in the report query projection, and apply a download format mask to one column and an image mask to the other. That the OP has apparently failed to do this probably indicates that they are unnecessarily complicating things.
    For example:
    select '<a href="javascript:downloadImg(' || image_id || ');"><img src="/i/download.gif"></a>' link_col
    from table
    where allow_view = 'Y'
    union all
    select '<img src="/i/folder.gif">' link_col
    from table
    where allow_view = 'N'
    or
    select decode(allow_view,'Y',
              '<a href="javascript:downloadImg(' || image_id || ');"><img src="/i/download.gif"></a>',
              '<img src="/i/folder.gif">') link_col
    from table
What is downloadImg? it is not a standard APEX JavaScript API. It is therefore highly unlikely that this is of any use to the OP.

  • How can I use same bookmarks file for both Firefox & Internet Explorer?

There are lots of questions and answers about how to import/export bookmarks/favorites to/from Internet Explorer, but they all seem to assume that afterward you're only going to use the one browser.
But like many other people, although I prefer to use Firefox, there are times I need to use IE for certain sites, or to see how a page I'm creating will display to IE users. This means that I regularly edit bookmarks/favorites in both browsers, and can't possibly keep up with importing/exporting back and forth. What I need to do is use the same set of bookmarks with both browsers, so that the next time I bookmark a page in IE it will be available when I re-open Firefox and vice versa.
I had things configured that way on my last computer, and it worked beautifully for years. Of course, it's long enough ago that I forgot how I did it, and a perfect memory wouldn't help anyway, since it was under Windows XP, and older versions of both browsers. Now I'm in the throes of learning Windows 7 on a new machine and haven't yet figured out how it thinks or wants me to think, so until I get my feet under me I'll need some pretty specific instructions. (Explanation would also be appreciated, as I do like to know the whys of things and it will help me become more proficient eventually; but at this moment my mental bandwidth is pretty low and my priority is just to get some basic things working.)

    Hi fastauntie,
This add-on may be able to help: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/plainoldfavorites PlainOldFavorites]. It allows you to access your Internet Explorer favourites from within firefox. There are some instructions here: [http://www.howtogeek.com/59050/from-the-tips-box-simple-ie-to-firefox-syncing-easy-windows-toolbars-and-identifying-usb-cables/]
Also you might be interested in [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ie-tab-2-ff-36 IE Tab v2]. It will allow you to use the Internet Explorer rendering engine from within firefox. It is useful if you want to see how a page would display in IE without leaving Firefox.
    I hope that helps,

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 Gen 2 VM failed to boot from SCSI DVD drive using ISO image file

    Hello:
I'm having a problem trying to install Windows 8.1 Professional on a new Gen 2 VM. I created a new Gen 2 VM using Hyper-V Manager running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and then told it to boot off DVD drive which pionts to the ISO file that I copied to the E:
drive.  The ISO file mounted in the virtual DVD drive is the Windows 8.1 Professional x64 VL ISO that I downloaded off of TechNet. When I start up the VM to install the OS, I receive this error:
"Synthetic SCSI Controller (Instance ID 7512B228-F7BC-4DD8-B4F4-72A5B042C2E9): Failed to Power on with Error 'The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.' (0x80070570). (Virtual machine ID 4195A398-3531-4A34-8588-D1FC3F3DD2D4)"
Basically the SCSI controller can't read the ISO file. However, the IDE controller on a Gen1 VM can read and boot from the ISO just fine. Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there a way to resolve this issue and allow me to boot the ISO from a SCSI
    controller?
Or is there a bug with the Hyper-V SCSI controller that makes it unable to boot from ISOs properly?
    -JP

    Hi JP,
In addition , please try  :
    1. copy the ISO to an not shared local folder or drive
    2. uncheck the   "enable secure boot" in VM settings .
If the issue still persists , maybe you can try to down load a new ISO file then try to boot again .
    Hope it helps

  • Update Library of a person using same music files but different login

I use iTunes with Windows. The songs are saved in "my files". I am using Windows XP Verion 5.1 My wife uses also iTunes on the same computer but with a different login. When I add files to iTunes my library is up to date but not hers. What can I do?
      Windows XP   Verion 5,1

Have a look at this article on sharing iTunes and see if it does what you are looking for. It was written for iTunes 4 but the version doesn't matter:"iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

  • ITunes in Multiple Windows Profiles using same library files.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with iTunes 7.1.1.5.
I have two windows users created on the machine and I have my iTunes library files installed to c:\iTunes both user accounts see the music just fine. The issue that I am having is when I attempt to purchase music from the iTunes store. iTunes in each windows profile will purchase music and download it, add it to the purchased playlist. The issue is that the other windows profile cannot see this purchased music. I have verified that the downloaded music was in the c:\itunes folder, but each windows profile seems to have a different purchased playlist.
Is there some secret to having two windows profiles on the same computer use the same iTunes library?
    Thanks
    ~Shane
      Other OS

Anything downloaded for the library of one profile must be added to the other profile by hand. iTunes does not support doing this automatically, no folder watching feature like other clients have.
iTunes library files are the itunes.itl and itunes.xml file within the iTunes folder for each user.
A good reason for this is podcast subscriptions. Each user can be subscribed to the same podcast. Downloads will be duplicated but this allows one user to delete episode without affecting the other user.

  • Using PNG image files in Flash

Hi, I'm new to this forum, so I'm not sure whether my
question is appropriate to be raised in here or not Any guidance
    would be appreciated.
My Flash 8 document contains images files that are in PNG
format (created on Adobe Photoshop CS2) and these image files DO
NOT have background. As I launch the Flash Movie, I can vaguely see
a background, which is same dimension of the entire image file,
underneath the image and it kind of look akward. I have tried to
add an extra background with the colour same as my Flash document
background colour underneath the image but it woudn't solve the
problem. On the contrary, this additional background is even more
    apparent.
Any advice what I can do ?

Yeah, this forum is entirely appropriate for your question.
The problem is an old one with Flash. The reason you see the
    'ghosted'
background in the alpha channel of your PNG is that you have
    your colour
depth set to 16 bits. If you crank it up to 32 bits, the
    anomaly will
disappear. Unfortunately there's not a great deal you can do
    about it,
except to break apart the image and actually delete the parts
    you don;t want
    to be visible.

  • 2 computers, using same lib-files

    hi
I'm listening to my music on 2 different computers, the one for my work, and another one in the livingroom. I always changed my library on the work-computer and transferred the library files on the living-computer.
    This way I avoided:
    - having to run 2 computers at the same time for accessing my music
    - and editing my library twice
Since I have on my working place a new computer, an iMac in stead of a PC, and still a PC in the living-room, I can't transfer my libs anymore. I tried to copy the mac-version of my lib to the PC, and of course it doesn't work that way between 2 different platforms. Logic, but I wanted to try.
Does anybody have any suggestion to help me with that problem.
    - i do not want to edit the lib twice
    - and i do not want to run 2 computers at the same time, just to listen to music
i also want to specify that all my music is on my NAS; i Just transferred the library files.
    thanks in advance

This is how to move your library from a Mac to a PC on a one off basis.
    1. Copy entire iTunes folder (and all subfolders) from the Mac to the PC, either directly over a network or via an external harddrive.
    2. On the PC rename *...\iTunes\iTunes Library* as *...\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl*
    3. On the PC delete *...\iTunes\iTunes Library Genius.itdb*
    4. Launch iTunes and immediately press & hold down the Option key until a dialog opens asking you to Create or Choose a library. Navigate to the folder/drive you've copied from the Mac and open ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
    5. Job done.
So.... if you can sync the folders for all media files all you need to do is to either delete the *iTunes Library Genius.itdb* file when moved from the Mac to the PC, or vice-versa or simply exclude it from the sync. As I understand it the Mac & PC versions of this file are not cross-platform compatible. Ideally you ought to be able to get the PC version to open the *iTunes Library* file without the .itl extension or get the Mac to open the file with it so you don't have to rename it, otherwise it's not too hard to write a batch file to do the housekeeping.

    Hi,
I want to clone application server with using existing context file. can I do adcfgclone.pl with using existing context file?
    What is the syntax ?
is there any issue to use this?
    thanks

Actually I want to clone existing enviornment of R12.0.6 application to fix local inventory issue.
Problem: During r12.1.3 upgrade I noticed that local inventory has issue. R12.1.3 upgrade was done succssfully after clone of production. When I started upgrade on production I noticed issue during 10.1.3.4 upgrade. Thats why I thought if I clone existing production enviornment on same server by using same context file then 10.1.3.4 upgrade will run.
I know there is a way to fix inventory but I don't want to do to avaoid more issue. Please advice which path is good in such enviornment. Are you referring to global inventory? If yes, you can simply copy it from the source servers to the target ones.
If the PATHs are different then please refer to:
