Lack of disk space using "Capture Now"
aright here's the situaton.. evry time i capture footage using "Capture Now" it captures it for a while and then just stops and a window pops up saying: capturing ended due to lack of disk space.
How can i fix this?
I'm thinking it might be closer to...
1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.
2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.68a85d17
3) Do not capture to your main system drive.
4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
Good luck,
CaptM

Allocating Disk Space using capture now.
FCE seems to freeze up with a messege that says "Allocating Disk Space" when using capture now.
If you have an anti-virus app running disable it.
Check FCE>System Settings>Scratch Discs. Make sure the Limit Capture Now has a value entered and the box is ticked. Default is 30 mins, it can be changed to suit the capture.
If you find a huge file with nothing in it this a probably a result of not having a value set. Delete it and start over.
When no value is set, FCE does not know how much drive space to allocate, so it grabs everything it can get it's hands on. That's why you can get that huge useless file.

Capture Ended Due to lack of disk space!?
It says that the capture ended due to lack of disk space, but the capture window says: 586.2GB Total Free Space and 2713.9 min Total free time??? (im using an external hard drive) It keeps telling me it ran out after 9:50mins of capture now?
I am trying to capture 40mins of film.Back up everything presently on the drive, then use Disk Utility to reformat to Mac OS Extended. If the only things on the drive at present are your captured video clips, you're probably better off simply reformatting and then recapturing. Proper format will eliminate the 2GB/9min limit.
You haven't said how the drive is connected. It needs to be via firewire. Apple doesn't support use of USB drives with video applications, though some folks have used USB drives successfully.

I am new to FCE and wish to use capture now to get a whole tape onto the system. I have set the time limit to 60 minutes. Then when I start Capture Now everything runs okay until I get a message stating. "Capture ended due to lack of disk space" on viewing the contents/data regarding the file it has copied 9.25 minutes of video at 2GB.
I have a 500Gb external hard drive nominated as a scratch disk.
I have tried altering system settings in FCE but still have the same problem.
I am using a canopus advc110 to transfer the video onto the system.you should reformat your external hard drive to os extended. copy everything on your external you want to keep, then reformat.

I have plenty of space on my hard drive (500GB), but when I plug in my iPhone there is a window stating the pone cannot be backed up because of lack of disk space. The same occurs with attempting to import CD's into iTunes. The hard disk was replaced recently in order to gain extra memory. Is there some sort of limit set up from the original hard drive causing this problem?
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is unable to complete the repair you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

Does iTunes offer a restore from other than current data on my pc? I've lost all my pictures because of lack of disk space on my pc.
Are you talking about restore of the iPhone from its backup, or something else? The first time you sync an iOS device on each calendar day iTunes will update the backup set for the device. If you remove data from the device and backup, then the backup of that data has gone. For this reason it actually makes sense to restore an iOS device periodically as, once used for a restore, the backup set is archived and a new one created.
Ideally you would have backed up these pictures somewhere. If you enabled it, you may find pictures in your Photo Stream.
In general you need to keep a backup copy of all your important files. iTunes will let you download most past purchases from the store but backing up other content is down to you. The user Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy suggests a way to do this for iTunes, but the same tool can be used to preserve other folders of data.

I was cleaning up my laptop to free up some disk space. I now can't get into my itunes ??? It's saying Itunes was not installed correctly error 7 (windows error 14003)
What do I need to re-install to get my itunes back?Is there also another message, Rob, citing a particular file? If so what is the name of the file? (Precise spelling, please.)
Are you running XP, Vista or 7? (I'm assuming 2000 must have just been a slip of the fingers.) -
How Can I Get the Amount of Free Disk Space using windows 7 please share example using GetDiskSpace i have already studied http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9958B8E473C4EF1786256BBC0053B64F
Reading your question a bit more in detail, I doubt whether you are using Win32 API GetDiskFreeSpace function (for which my previous post is the solution) of Programmer's Toolbox GetDiskSpace function.
With reference to the second one, it works even with disks larger than 2GB but you need to use the proper formatting code to display the returned value. I updated my example to show total free space in the debug output window and added a comparison with 3GB value using UInt64TypeCompareUInt from the Programmer's Toolbox. -
Twice as much disk space used on external HD for TM than internal HD
Disk Utility shows the amount of disk space used by TM as 86 GB whereas the HD only shows 45 GB used. Also, the number of files and folders have nearly doubled in size. This from only two days of using TM.

Since TM keeps previous version of things you've changed or deleted, in addition to everything currently on your system, yes, it will use more space.
But to be twice the size in two days is clearly not right. Chris is probably correct, that TM has been backing-up the SuperDuper "clone" as well. If so, you can delete the backups of it -- see #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that's not the case, see #9 there for a way to find out what's taking up so much space. If you find things being backed-up that you don't recognize, post back with the name(s) and location(s); somebody here will likely know what they are. -
No audio after using capture now to log files
I'm trying to import some footage into final cut pro but having trouble getting the audio to work. I'm using my camera as a deck and I can hear the sound coming from the camera, I can also hear it when I'm logging/capturing and when i'm using capture now. someone had suggested that I turn off the audio in the sequence and canvas. I'm not sure how to turn it off in the canvas but i tried turning it off in the sequence and I still don't get audio after I capture the clips. Any ideas/suggestions?
thanksWas the source audio button checked to on in the Log & Capture > Clip Settings window?

FCP 4.0 issue - using capture now, freezes after 5 minutes
Capturing miniDV to FCP 4.0 using capture now on external drive. Never had any problems in the past, but now FCP freezes after a little more than 5 minutes of capturing. I have to force quit. When I find the file on my hard drive it's about 10 GB. Haven't used FCP in several months. Is it possible some settings got screwed up? No problem capturing via iMovie 4.0 so the problem doesn't seem to be with the drive.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Message was edited by: nlevitinJust to reiterate what Shane and David told you. Updating to QT 7.4 is probably not going to solve your issue. It might make things worse though. You need to do what they said and get your quicktime version they recommended. Now, if it works for you, fantastic, but there have been enough posts on this topic and chances are very slim to null that QT 7.4 will work for your version of Final Cut.
And please be prepared to do an erase and install if the archive and install does not work.
One more idea might be to use a program called Pacifist. (Search the forum for Quicktime and Pacifist) You may be able to use that. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here.

Disk space used much larger than actual files
I noticed this morning that Terminal was giving a warning about running out of swap space, which I thought was odd, as /var/vm was only at around ~10GB, but later when I tried to install some updates, I noticed that it said I only had 1.8MB free on my hard drive. I ran a df -h and it showed %iused at 100%. I immediately deleted some logs to free up a few megabytes of space and started hunting for what could have been hogging all my disk space, I seem to remember having 60GB free last time I checked. I was deleting a few small files, when I noticed this
bash-4.2# du -h -d 1
6.2M ./.DocumentRevisions-V100
584K ./.fseventsd
583M ./.Spotlight-V100
0B ./.Trashes
31G ./Applications
2.1M ./bin
20K ./cache
3.8G ./data
5.0K ./dev
34M ./Developer
1.3M ./EFI
1.0K ./home
8.9G ./Library
1.0K ./net
0B ./Network
185M ./opt
12G ./private
1.5M ./sbin
0B ./Shared Items
4.1G ./System
52G ./Users
4.9G ./usr
4.0K ./Volumes
117G
So apparently, according to du, I am only using 117GB of my hard drive. I immediately ran this
bash-4.2# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/disk1 297Gi 283Gi 14Gi 96% 74220526 3630455 95% /
devfs 200Ki 200Ki 0Bi 100% 692 0 100% /dev
map -hosts 0Bi 0Bi 0Bi 100% 0 0 100% /net
map auto_home 0Bi 0Bi 0Bi 100% 0 0 100% /home
So my question is how is it that all of my files combined are using 117GB, including swap, but according to df, Disk Utility and Finder I am using 283GB? I am using FileVault 2, if that helps
Here's some more data

The other Internal hard drive is the core storage physical volume, already mounted, mounted in the image. Recovery HD is the 650MB system recovery partition.
I rebooted to the recovery partition and used Disk Utility to verify the volume, it said everything checked out alright.
In disk utility, the top entry has this data
Name : Internal Hard Drive Capacity : 319.21 GB (319,213,174,784 Bytes)
Type : Logical Volume Group Available : 16.8 MB (16,777,216 Bytes)
Disk Status : Online Used : 319.2 GB (319,196,397,568 Bytes)
However the other entry, right below it has this
Mount Point : / Capacity : 318.88 GB (318,877,626,368 Bytes)
Format : Encrypted Logical Partition Available : 202.18 GB (202,175,160,320 Bytes)
Owners Enabled : Yes Used : 116.7 GB (116,702,466,048 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 241,519 Number of Files : 1,246,454
So I guess the reboot fixed my problem, df -h now shows 37% used, but the logical vomume group still shows only 16MB free. Anyways, things seem to be working now. -
Finding disk space used by FileVault
I have my home folder encrypted with FileVault but do not know how to find the total space used by files in the folder. Get Info just returns that it is a sparse image. Yet, I can do a get info on my backup copy of my home folder (done by a file by file copy to another disk) and see the total space used. Also, I can't drill down one level and then select all the folders together because when I do that I get an info window for every folder at that level. Incidentally, this particular behavior has always been a bugbear of mine - is there any way of changing it to just get one get info window, in the same way that you would with Explorer on a Windows system.
I have the exact same question.
Why is it copying all the files into another directory and then uploading to Photostream?
Can I just delete this directory and keep my Photostream OK?
It's sucking my SSD dry for no good reason. Why do I need several copies of my photos on my computer? What is the point of the cloud?
Someone chime in! I've been underwhelmed completely w iCloud, and now I'm thinking its worth that worthless, as it's needlessly duplicating stuff on my HD and taking up space.
Thanks! -
Zones - reducing disk space used
We're currently looking at zones to consolidate our license servers, since fault management tends to be easier/faster when the license server is running in its own zone.
However, as of right now the "sparse" root model configuration requires 578M of space - 495M taken by packages. Having several of zones using the same size like this would eat up disk space quickly.
Ideally, I'd like the zones to be exactly like the global zone with a few changes under /etc
Does anyone know a way to reduce or eliminate the number of packages needed to be installed, or other ways I might cut down disk usage further? We're trying to figure out how to speed up patching as well -- it seems silly how long it takes to effectively just update the /var/sadm structures for a sparse zone...
One note though: to reduce space consumed in /var/sadm in a very safe way, you can delete the "obsolete*" files -- these are the backout information from patches that have been superseded at least once, so the only risk is that you will only be able to back out a single "layer" of patching. You can remove the "undo" files as well, but then you cannot backout the related patches.
Infodoc 14295 has a nice overview of what the files in /var/sadm are for those interested. -
CSCul50066 - Upgrade fails due to lack of disk space in the /common partition
I noticed this has only 1 and 2 star ratings after bumping into this issue myself, so I figured I would help out the original poster and others who are experiencing this issue.
Presumably, the original poster is intending to advise that we read the CUCM 10.0(1) Upgrade Guide, and view the Pre-Upgrade Tasks therein. These (the bullet points below) seem to be the salient options contained in that section. I used the "Free Common Space COP file" option to resolve my disk space issue and allow my upgrade. I found the .cop file in the following download area on CCO:

and remove unnecessary log files. Cisco recommends that you adjust the low watermark value to 30,
and the high watermark value to 40. After the upgrade, you must restore the high and low watermarks
to their original values in order to avoid premature purging of traces. The default value for the high
watermark is 85. The default value for the low watermark is 80. For more information about using the
