Lack of FireWire in latest Macbooks
Does anyone know why the latest basic Macbooks no longer have FireWire?

Apple Discussions is a user-to-user discussion board and as such any response would be speculation or opinion. Removing FireWire from the MacBook is not new for Apple, they first toyed with the idea by removing it on the aluminum MacBook. Ironically only to bring it back and then remove it again.

In addition you can also call into Apple and inquiry, though it's unlikely that anyone in AppleCare knows exactly why the machine was designed with (or without) a certain feature.

What if ingesting from DV tape to FC X using the Macbook Pro Retina which lacks a firewire port
I have used it quite a bit for connecting to external drives, etc. with no problems. Have not done a tape ingest as we don't have tape based cameras to work with any more. It appears to emulate a FW800 port perfectly.

If the lack of firewire on the new macbooks saves me $5 off the purchase price then that removal has been worthwhile, additionally its one less ugly port on the side of my computer.

I've never used firewire in my life.I don't think people realize the situation that those of us who require firewire are faced with now...
I am a musician and need a firewire interface to handle multi-channel audio + MIDI. I have a LOT of money invested in this interface/architecture.
If I am looking to buy a Mac laptop for recording on the road, my options are now a 2 year old computer for 1K or a 2K+ MacBookPro. That is a pretty expensive FW port!!!
If you never use FW or never have, that is fine -- you aren't affected. However, driving users away from the Mac (i.e. the musician/producer communities - not to mention higher-end/pro-sumer video communities) only hurts the Mac community. Also, as people are 'forced' into cheaper PC alternatives, the makers of audio interfaces and other FW technologies will follow. Pretty soon we might be seeing PC laptops on stage and in studios where we used to see the familiar Apple logo.
The Mac has long been a platform known for creative people (musicians/artists/photographers/video artists). FW is a pretty essential tool to that audience. And, I don't think it is fair to assume that any creative person who requires these FW tools is a 'pro' and should spend the extra money to get that essential FW port!
Imagine a day when eSATA rules supreme for external drives and some new wireless/bluetooth standard eliminates the need for USB --- how will you feel when you have to replace all your USB items to get your job done?
Anyway, I expected some people to have the 'get over it' attitude. But, IMHO, we need to be supportive of each other as Mac users and advocates of the Mac platform so we can get other people to see what they've been missing all these years!

Can I use the new Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter to download video from a video camera by firewire to my Macbook Air ?
Yes, you can use the 85 watt adaptor. You cannot use the new adaptors because your computer is not equipped with the proper MagSafe connector. But you can use the older MBP adaptors as well as a 60 watt replacement adaptor. All can be found at Apple's Online Store.

I have just upgraded from a Macbook to a Macbook Air. I have been using a iomega external hard drive for Time Machine, which use a Firewire. However, Macbook Air's do not have a Firewire port and i cannot find an adaptor anywhere. Can anyone help?? Thanks
There has never been a reliable firewire ---> USB adapter suitable for external high speed storage. This was a major issue when the MacBooks lost the firewire port a number of years ago (Apple subsequently brought it back).
The only high speed port on the Air is the ThunderBolt port. There are external ThunderBolt drive options out there, but they're somewhat more expensive than traditional USB/FireWire options. -
Has anyone had any issues using Adobe CS or Pro Tools on the LATEST MacBook
I am about to purchase a new MacBook Pro and would like to know if there has been any issues with the latest MacBook Pro with programs such as Pro Tools, Adobe Creative Suite, or any programs that have anything to do with rendering. Please let me know what's up.
No problems with CS5, the only suggestion is that if you're going to do a lot of rendering get the i7 CPU, max out the RAM (not necessarily from Apple, OWC have very good quality and prices) and get the 7200rpm hard drive.

I could be *very* wrong but did not know you could output from HDMI into displayport consistently with no issues.
Try a mDP to DP cable like this (the mDP end will go directly into the thunderbolt port of your laptop)

How do I attach my camcorder or use target disc mode if there is no firewire on the new macbooks?
I am really upset about not being able to use my camcorder. This is a HUGE oversight. Any work arounds?This is covered in a lot of other threads here.
Briefly, if you need FIrewire, get a MacBook Pro or an older (just discontinued and now discounted) MacBook. -
I have just purchased the latest macbook pro 13 retina (late 2013). I want to connect to a Dell U2713H Monitor. As the new macbook doesn't have a cd slot, I am unable to install the monitor drivers etc. Where can I download the drivers?
Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm not sure how to connect to the monitor as the only ports available on this model mac are Thunderbolt. The mini display to display cable supplied doesn't seem to work out of the TB port. Do I need to use a Thunderbolt cable + an adaptor?

Please help!Forget Logic Pro 8 on your new macbook, it will not work. The "upgrade" to LPX will cost you around 200 bucks and can be acquired via the App Store.

I have the latest Macbook Pro retina and I have looked on line for ways to hook it up to Apple TV, but all ways have failed to do so. However, I can easily access Apple TV through my Iphone 4s.
~ When I turn on Apple TV and Airplay and connect only the Macbook Screen goes into the mirror tv format. Nothing shows up at all on the TV.Awesome, thanks everyone for your brilliant ideas in regards to trouble shooting this issue.

I am looking at a hard copy of Final Cut Pro X online that says it is version 10.0.8 I have the latest macbook Pro and I am wondering if that software is compatible with my laptop? Do Hard Copies of Pro X even exist? Is it stupid to try and buy this?
Online where exactly? Post a URL. The application is only legally available for purchase as a direct download from the App Store. Or are you talking about the trial version?

Blackberry Software Consistently Causes Latest MacBook Pro to Crash
I¹ve used the Mac Blackberry desktop software for a couple of months now and
would like it on the record that this software is very temperamental. While
it upgrades my Blackberry successfully, it causes numerous crashes when it
is left up for some time (probably more than 5 minutes). I have one of the
latest MacBook Pros and am constantly running programs such as Disk Warrior
to ensure that the machine is running smoothly. The Blackberry software is
unique in that it is one of the few pieces of software that causes my
computer to crash.
Please also note, that for users using MobileMe to update their calendars,
the MobileMe calendar file cannot be read by the Blackberry updater. Thus,
another file ³On My Mac² has to be created in order to update. Please note
that I am not currently using a data plan and that my Blackberry is updated
only by plugging it directly into the computer.
Since I am able to update my Blackberry data reasonably accurately with this
software, this is currently a workable situation for me. However, if the

more and more tempted to get rid of the Blackberry and go with something
